WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Hurts
With summer in full swing, this page has one thing to look forward to: autumn. As the leaves turn brown in the coming months, there are some stunning shows coming to Brighton. From glam-rock to goth-rock there’s plenty of music coming up, not to mention world-class opera, comedy and for the green fingered amongst you, Gardener’s Question Time. Just before autumn starts however, we also have summer’s closing party; Shakedown.
Wed 2nd Nov, Brighton Centre For a band with just one album under their belt, Hurts are enormously popular. Selling out arenas as big as Wembley across Europe, the Salford lads seem to have struck a chord in countries such as Germany and Greece where their album has gone multiplatinum. In November the band will play Brighton’s biggest venue and it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re playing Wembley soon. brightoncentre.co.uk
Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk
Shakedown Festival
The Darkness
Sat 17th Sept, Stanmer Park With the required consents now given, the festival’s new date in mid-September is serving as the Brighton’s summer closing party. With Razorlight headlining and shows from Example, Freemasons, New Young Pony Club, Kissy Sell Out and more, Shakedown looks set to be a fantastic end to the summer. Get your tickets at the early bird price for a limited time only now. shakedown.co.uk
Wed 16th Nov, Brighton Dome Glam-rock revivalists The Darkness took the world by storm in 2003 with ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love.’ But by 2005, the band had lost original guitarist Frankie Pouillan and in 2006 jumpsuit-wearing front-man, Justin Hawkins, left. The band was no more. Five years later Pouillan and Hawkins are back with the band, on the road and luckily, they’re playing Brighton. brightondome.org
Joe Wilkinson
Gardener’s Question Time Live
Wed 12th Oct, Komedia Star of the BBC3 sitcom Him & Her, Joe Wilkinson has had a busy year of TV appearances including appearances on shows from Have I Got News For You and Never Mind The Buzzcocks to The Rob Brydon Show. Before all that though, he was a critically acclaimed stand up comedian and this October he will be bringing his show to the Brighton. komedia.co.uk/Brighton
Sun 4th Dec, Theatre Royal Radio 4 has a habit of producing shows that inevitably become known as ‘British Institutions’ and Gardener’s Question Time is no exception. The panel show that answers questions on horticulture will be touring for the first time this year and Brighton will be host to the show in December. Get your hands on tickets now and have your questions ready! ambassadortickets.com/Brighton
The Horrors
Faust Live
Tues 25th Oct, Concorde2 The Horrors released their debut album, Strange House, in 2007 to an audience who seemed far more taken with their skinny jeans and Robert Smith-style hair than any one track on the record. Then, in 2009 with Primary Colours and this year’s Skying, their third LP, the band is finally gaining the recognition they deserve. Catch them play the legendary Concorde2 this Autumn. concorde2.co.uk
Sat 10th Dec, Duke of York’s Cinema Continuing their collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, this December the Duke of York’s Cinema will be showing Faust, transmitted live via satellite from the New York Met, in high definition on the big screen. Bringing world-class opera to Brighton is a real treat and continues to set it out as the best cinema in the city. picturehouses.co.uk/cinema/ Duke_Of_Yorks

Brighton Beach Fest, 2’s + 4’s
Looking at this month’s line up I couldn’t have dreamt up a more diverse list if I’d tried. From flying trapeze classes, for those with a head for heights, to more hands-off aeronautical displays, vintage fun for horror film aficionados and classic style fans plus a little music of course to round things off. How does a day of wild Rockabilly or time travel with a brass band grab you?
Sat 20th & Sun 21st, Yellowave Beach Sports Venue Yellowave is the UK’s only permanent beach venue of its kind, offering volleyball and beach sports facilities for all ages, with qualified coaches available and the lovely Barefoot Café serving up refreshments. If you’re a dab hand already then get some friends together and sign up for the doubles and mixed fours this weekend. yellowave.co.uk
Greg Furlong: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk
Aerial Circus School
RAFA Shoreham Airshow
Thu 4th & Fri 5th, Pavilion Theatre
Sat 20th & Sun 21st, Shoreham Airport For those who prefer their aerobatics to be of a more mechanical nature Shoreham Airshow never fails to disappoint. This year should be no different with 30 displays bringing in over 50 different aircraft, including the famous ‘Scramble’ featuring Spitfires, Hurricanes and Messerschmitts in a thrilling set piece. On the ground there will be stalls and classic cars too. shorehamairshow.co.uk
Learn the trapeze like a pro, climb the rope and show off moves such as the spider, bird’s nest and mermaid. It’s kind of like joining the circus, but only for a day, and you don’t have to run away to do it. No experience is necessary, just wear appropriate clothing … I’d suggest something in spandex and glitter. brightondome.org
Art Deco Fair Sun 14th, Hove Town Hall If you’re a fan of Art Deco or love all things vintage then forget the Sunday roast this weekend and head down to the Art Deco Fair. There are stalls aplenty, offering everything from furniture to jewellery, fashion and artwork, all from the 1920s through to the 1970s. It’s a Mecca for serious antique hunters and savvy style seekers alike. decofairs.co.uk 6

Music and Wine at St. Luke’s
The Horror Double Bill,
Fri 12th, St. Luke’s Church Join the award-winning Brassik Brass Ensemble for an evening of wonderfully light and varied music from around the world. During the evening they will transport you to the German royal court, renaissance Italy and Antwerp, before exploring some early American minimalism. Be warned, there has been mention of the possibility of dancing so go easy on the wine. stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk
Sun 21st, Komedia Remember those BBC horror double bills in the 70s and 80s? I’d surreptitiously clutch a cushion so hard my fingers ached, while nonchalantly telling my Dad I wasn’t scared just so I didn’t have to go to bed. Now the Classic Horror Campaign presents The Horror Double Bill. Two classic movies, free giveaways, terrifying trailers and creepy competitions … perfect for terror-junkies! komedia.co.uk/brighton

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Zippo’s Circus: Horsepower
We all know summer time in Brighton is very special indeed, long lazy days on the beach and even longer nights sipping drinks outside pubs or firing up the BBQ; it would be easy to entirely devote oneself to these hedonistic pursuits to the expense of trying new things. Don’t fall into this trap! Give any one of the treats below a spin this month and you won’t regret it.
Thurs 18th – Tues 30th, Hove Lawns In the show billed as Zippo’s Circus ‘crashing into the twenty-first century’, two kinds of horsepower, the equestrian and the motor, join forces to bring you a thrilling series of spectacles. This includes the terrifying 70mph motorcycle feat the ‘Wheel of Death’ and Yasmine Smart, granddaughter of legendary Billy, performing with her new Andalusian stallion and four tiny Palomino ponies. zippos.co.uk

Diamond Smile
Fitness First, Queens Rd, 07949 800886 For a couple of years I hadn’t been keen on the colour of my teeth. I’d toyed with the idea of tooth whitening and even tried a DIY kit which was a painful waste of thirty-odd quid. When I heard of laser teeth whitening I was intrigued. So a very wet Monday afternoon found me dripping all over the carpet of the Diamond Smile salon whilst being welcomed by the beaming smile of my practitioner Sade. Once settled in, together we determined which shade my tooth colour was presently then popped me on the couch to start the treatment.
A protective layer was applied to the edges of my gums and then the whitening solution was applied to my teeth. At this point the laser, actually an LED “light emitting diode”, was turned on, pointing directly onto my teeth. A moisturising lotion was slicked across my lips and then I just lay back and rested for 15 minutes. The only minor discomfort was keeping my mouth open for such a period. After that time the process was repeated and when my tooth colour was compared to that it was

Example
Freemasons
2011 has been a stellar year for London based rapper/singer Example who has monopolised the charts with his distinctive blend of dance, electronica, grime and dub-step. ‘Changed the Way you Kissed Me’, taken from the forthcoming album ‘Playing in the Shadows’, gave him his first UK number one single. From the pop edged ‘Kickstarts’ through to synth-heavy new track ‘Stay Awake’, Example knows how to work a crowd. trythisforexample.com
Internationally acclaimed DJs, the Freemasons are the UK’s most successful remixers, boasting six consecutive UK hit singles. Based in Brighton, (and named after the pub next to their studio) Russell Small and James Wiltshere have a worldwide following for their own productions and their collaborations with some of the hottest artists on the planet (Beyonce, Shakira, Kylie). Expect a blistering set as the Freemasons come home to play Shakedown. myspace.com/freemasons

Kovak
For almost two decades now the Dewaele brothers have worked to cement their status as a DJ act of truly international importance. Since 2004’s ‘E talking’ the brothers have shown they were here not only to break the rules but to rewrite them. Having remixed tracks from Kylie to Dizzee, Bowie to Tiga, the crowd can expect nothing except a mind-bending journey through all things music. 2manydjs.com
Electro-pop four-piece, Kovak are another Brighton act making waves on the international music scene. Their music has featured on film soundtracks and on the HBO channel in America, while Summer 2011 sees them playing gigs in North America and recording their second album with acclaimed dance producer Andy Gray. They will be breaking out their vintage synths for an energetic and danceable indie-disco set at Shakedown. kovak.co.uk or myspace.com/kovakuk

Super 8
Indiana Jones and James Bond side by side fighting creatures from outer space? Sounds like the best film ever doesn’t it? Well let’s hope so. On 17th August the man who brought us both Iron Man films, Jon Favreau, unleashes ‘Cowboys And Aliens’. Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig star alongside Olivia Wilde who was rumoured to be the new Bond girl when 007 returns to the screen in November 2012.
In Cinemas, 5th The secretive ‘Super 8’ is now among us and tells the story of a group of children who are filming their own movie when a train derails, releasing a dangerous presence into their town. Written and directed by Star Trek rebooter JJ Abrams and produced by the legendary Steven Spielberg expect ‘E.T’ meets ‘Cloverfield’ and a return to the feel good movies of the eighties.

Moby Dick On DVD In this retelling of Herman Melville’s 1851 classic tale of obsession and revenge the titular whale is hunted by a grizzly, robo-legged Captain Ahab. Wait a minute. Robotic legs? Ah yes, it’s our old friends The Asylum at the helm here. After Mega Piranha, Crocosaurus and a whole host of aquatic beasties it was only a matter of time before they turned their attention to the deep sea’s most famous monster. This time around Ahab’s ship, The Pequod, is a state-of-the-art nuclear submarine which takes on board a reluctant female marine biologist - pun ahoy! - Dr Michelle Herman. The random cult actor generator that Asylum seem to use to cast all of their films this time spits out Brad Majors from ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ (Barry Bostock) and Gabrielle from ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ (Renee O’Connor). Although their presence averts a total shipwreck this is still pretty nonsensical fare - the CGI

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes In Cinemas, 11th After Tim Burton’s ‘reimagining’ was given a universal thumbs down, Fox have decided to reboot the franchise. James Franco stars with Andy Serkis as the simian star Caesar, and shows how scientists get more than they bargain for when they develop intelligence in apes. If director Rupert Wyatt gets it right there’s no reason why this couldn’t outlive the original series.
Project Nim In Cinemas, 12th From the Oscar winning team behind ‘Man On Wire’, ‘Project Nim’ tells the story of a Chimpanzee that was raised by a family as one of their own children in the 1970s as part of a scientific experiment. With testaments from all involved, newly discovered footage from the time and dramatic imagery this is being hailed as the best documentary of the year so far.
is as shonky as ever, characterisation is a mere blip on the horizon and Moby Dick himself seems to have been modelled on Monty Python’s Spiny Norman. Not the ‘Jaws’ meets ‘The Hunt For Red October’ classic that they were obviously hoping for but get your friends round, some beers in and you’re in for a fun 87 minutes.
In A Better World In Cinemas, 19th 2011 Oscar & Golden Globe Winner for Best Foreign Language Film this is a gripping human drama about revenge and the power of forgiveness from director Susanne Bier. From the confines of a refugee camp in Africa, to the deceptively idyllic suburban life of two families in Denmark, Bier expertly paints a portrait of two fragile worlds inextricably linked by conflict and violence.

The waterfront is where things happen. I have covered the beach side bars many times in my career but this time I am offering something a little different. Here’s a look at the other pubs who are close enough to the pebbles to smell the salt but at a more genteel distance from the hoi polloi on the beach hurling booze down their gullets, wild eyed and glistening red in the sun.

As the heady days of July move into the (hopefully) long, lazy days of August, there’ll probably be a fair few warm evenings you’ll need to fill on your calendar. Which is just as well really, as there’s a veritable feast of weird and wonderful acts just itching for you to hear them (and hopefully buy their t-shirts): rap; Brazilian new rave; folk; sexy songwriting; it’s all here in August.
Sun 21st, Digital Although CSS’s full name – ‘Cansei de Ser Sexy’ – may translate as “tired of being sexy” in Portuguese; we’re pretty sure that you won’t be getting tired of these Brazilian new ravers. With infectious beats and unique English/ Portuguese vocals of lead singer Lovefoxxx, the fusion of English and Brazilian styles has created a band with an aggressive, groove-laden identity that’s like being punched on the dance floor. myspace.com/canseidesersexy

Fleet Foxes
Water Tower Bucket Boys
Tues 16th, Brighton Dome You haven’t heard of Fleet Foxes yet? Then you’ve either been living under a rock or, well, down a foxhole. A spellbinding Glastonbury performance and rave reviews for their latest album, Helplessness Blues, have ensured a feverish buzz hangs around the Seattle folk foursome. So if you like your folk with lush harmonies, then get on to the Dome to shake your tails. fleetfoxes.com
Sat 27th, The Haunt With album titles like ‘Catfish on the Line’ and ‘The Squid and the Fiddle’, you may be able to see what sort of music you’re letting yourself in for with the Water Tower Bucket Boys; their blues and sawgrass style has earned them high praise, and they have retained enough punk and soul to provide audiences with an intriguing live show. watertowerbucketboys.com
Crazy Arm Sat 20th, Prince Albert Crazy Arm are a band that are initially a little hard to place, but that’s no bad thing. The Devonshire band show influences of country and rock whilst being driven by punk’s fiery heart and, if the track ‘Still To Keep’ is anything to judge them by, then expect big vocal harmonies, shoelace-tight rhythm, and noise – a lot of it – within the Albert. myspace.com/crazyarm 30
