La Cage Aux Folles
Brighton is a city in which there is always something to do and the following months are no exception. With the man who first used the word ‘Reggay’ on record to the whisky soaked sounds of Bellowhead, music fans have plenty to look forward to. On top of that there’s zombie walks, Bill Bailey, and a world famous musical all coming to the city as well in an action packed 2011.
Tues 6th - Sat 10th Sept, Theatre Royal Harvey Fierstein’s touching story of one family’s struggle to stay together is a musical comedy masterpiece. This September ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ will be brought to life by the Brighton Theatre Group in a production that will be funny, fabulous and fantastic all at once. This is a show like no other and one not to be missed. ambassadortickets.com/ Theatre-Royal-Brighton

Brighton Beer Festival
Toots & The Maytals
Thurs 14th - Sun 17th July, Old Paddling Pool The Brighton Beer Festival has been designed to put the fun back into drinking beer. They’ve sourced over 250 top quality ales, lagers, ciders and stouts from around the world, organised a series of live bands including Dodgy and The Blockheads alongside games, competitions and more. This all fits into a stylish, pop-up venue on Brighton’s seafront. beerfestbrighton.co.uk
Thurs 8th Sept, Brighton Dome Toots Hibbert was the first man to use the word reggae on record. In 1968, along with The Maytals, he released a song titled ‘Do The Reggay’, and the rest, as they say, is history. Toots will be gracing the Dome’s stage this September in what is sure to be a phenomenal show so get in early to buy your tickets. brightondome.org
Shakedown Festival
Bill Bailey
Saturday 17th Sept, Stanmer Park Shakedown festival date has changed but is still in Stanmer Park. It’s now set to be Brighton’s Summer Closing Party. So far confirmed for the new date are: Razorlight, Example, 2 Many DJs, Freemasons, New Young Pony Club and many more, with further acts to be announced soon. All existing tickets can be used for the new date. More info on the website. shakedown.co.uk
Wed 9th Nov, Brighton Centre The bearded (and balding) comedian will be returning to Brighton later this year with his Dandelion Mind tour. Having sold out all his previous shows in the city it is best advised that you get in early to catch a spectacle that will include everything from unlikely anecdotes and rants about Michael Winner to Iranian hip-hop and internet love songs. Laughter guaranteed. brightoncentre.co.uk
Cannibal Corpse
Bellowhead
Frid 2nd Sept, The Hydrant Well know for their party hard lifestyle, Cannibal Corpse are the band for which there is always a drink in one hand and an instrument in the other. Though they seem to continually party this is a band for which the phrase ‘work hard, play hard’ was invented. Catch their brand of old school death metal this September, you won’t regret it. thehydrant.co.uk
Fri 11th Nov, Corn Exchange Watching Bellowhead live is an experience like no other. Their theatrical shows make you feel like you’re in some sort of swashbuckling pirate bar from a long gone era. The eleven piece band play a blend of folk music that takes in such a wide variety of influences there’s simply no room here to list them all. This will be, without a doubt, amazing. brightondome.org

Richard Herring
Time flies when you’re having fun, and June looks like being all about fun. So get organised and plan what you’re doing this month as it may just disappear before you know it. There are festivals galore, at least one carnival and a fair to explore, a whole lot of cycling going on and fifty fairytales up for auction. It would be a real shame to miss any of it.
Wed 8th, Caroline Of Brunswick Having sorted out religion (Christ on a Bike), politics (Hitler Moustache) and penises (Talking Cock), the star of the award-winning As It Occurs To Me and Radio 4’s Richard Herring Objects seeks to define and destroy love before love destroys him. Again. A familiar face to Fringe stalwarts and TV audiences, if you’ve not seen him live before then do it now. carolineofbrunswick.co.uk

The Fairytale Auction
Sat 4th, Kemp Town After an absence of three years the spirit of the Kemp Town Carnival has been revived. Great news, as St Georges Road will once again ring with the sound of revellers celebrating the spirit of this vibrant community. With street performances, art exhibitions and a parade to enjoy, it’s the perfect showcase for what makes the heart of Kemp Town so special. kemptowncarnival.com
Wed 8th, Pub du Vin 50 artists from Brighton and Hove have translated their favourite fairytales into one-off pieces of art to be auctioned off in a unique fundraising event for the Argus Appeal. Cinderella to Rumpelstiltskin, all will be revealed in an extravagantly themed exhibition at Jag Studios on June 4th before going under the hammer in the beautifully domed ballroom of Pub Du Vin. entertheclutter.com/ fairytaleauctionrytaleauction

Big Band at the Bandstand Sun 5th, Brighton Bandstand Nothing says bandstand like a big band, particularly when it’s The Brighton & Hove Youth Big Band. With a repertoire including Glen Miller, Charles Mingus and Chick Corea, they play some of the most exciting music written for the medium. They also featured on The Go! Team’s last album. So get along and grab a deckchair … knotted hanky optional. brightonbandstand.co.uk

Apparently us Brightonians eat out, on average 2-3 times a month. Furthermore, we are creatures of habit and sticklers for what has been tried, tested and most importantly enjoyed. We dine at the same 3-4 restaurants with our choices being determined by our company, appetite or the occasion. This June, I implore you to sample comfort food out of your comfort zone and try some of these delights that reside on our doorstep and a stone’s throw away from the sea.

It’s time to take a break from ‘cool cuisine’ for a night, stray away from the conservative miniature portions of late and enjoy a hearty and traditional dinner at Aberdeen. Visit www.aberdeen-steakhouse.co.uk to see the wide range of menus or make an instant online booking.

Old Ship Hotel, King’s Road, 01273 329001 Location 3 is unveiling an exciting new look for Summer 2011 with a new menu to boot. Their slow roast chicken, pistachio and tarragon terrine was extremely tasty as was the blini pancakes with smoked salmon, crème fraiche and laced with a rather naughty red onion, dill and vodka emulsion… phew! Classics such as Harvey’s Ale battered cod and chips and South Downs lamb are also on offer for the more traditional diner. 8

Classic Car Run
Sat 18th - Sat 25th, New Venture Theatre Wouldn’t it be nice to have a servant, eh? New oranges daily, your newspaper freshly squeezed and your pants ironed. But wait! The wealthy young wastrel in this play finds it’s not all breakfast in bed, oh no. His manservant appears somewhat Machiavellian, slowly turning the tables whilst blurring class and status lines. Think I’ll fetch me own slippers thanks ... newventure.org.uk
Sun 5th, Madeira Drive Broom broom! Enjoy the splendid spectacle of classic cars aplenty lining up along the seafront, having just finished their 23rd yearly run from the Mercedes-Benz World Museum in Weybridge to arrive at our fair shores. 20,000 spectators are expected so come early to gawk at hundreds of pre-1986 beauties. (The cars, not the people. I’m sure they will all look very modern). classicmotorshow.com
Danny Bhoy: Messenger (Please Do Not Shoot) Sat 18th, Dome The charming, easy going and jolly funny Danny Bhoy is often hailed as the new Billy Connolly, but I’m going to stick my neck out here and say that he is BETTER. This month we are featuring two fantastic treatments to help get that summer body. Cellulite is something both men and women cannot avoid. And with hot weather fast approaching, we all want to look our best on the beach. There are hundreds of methods out there claiming to help with cellulite, but here are two of what we think are the best unisex, anti cellulite treatments around. Donna Goatcher: lifestyle@whatsonguide.co.uk
LA Fitness,
North Road, 07955 921823 everybodytherapy.co.uk Everybody Therapy is situated in treatment rooms in LA Fitness and My Hotel. They specialise in sports and deep tissue massage. At LA Fitness I was greeted by Charlotte who carried out my cellulite busting treatment. Here I received an invigorating massage using detoxifying essential oils, which help reduce the appearance of cellulite. After a 45 minute treatment on my legs they were tingling with excitement; I could really feel the benefit of the massage and my skin felt amazing. To get the full benefit of this treatment a course is recommended and something I will definitely be going back for.

With summer months almost upon us what better way to enjoy living by the sea than stand up paddle boarding, or SUP as it is more commonly known. The modern water sport which originated from Hawaii in the early 1960s is becoming increasingly popular along the south coast, with schools popping up everywhere for mere amateurs like myself to go and experience, enjoy and of course have a good laugh. Donna Goatcher: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk
The Adrenaline Store 61 High Street, Shoreham by Sea, 01273 463642, theadrenalinestore.com At the end of the high street, in the increasingly popular town of Shoreham by Sea, is The Adrenaline Store - a hidden gem to all adventure sports lovers. The proof is in the name, The Adrenaline Store! I had heard about stand up paddle boarding from friends and really wanted to try it out for myself. Not only is it a great sport to get involved in, as we live by the sea, but it is also a fantastic workout, helping to tone your core muscles. To really enjoy paddle boarding and get the most out of your lesson, it is best to go when the tide is high and of course the sun is shining. After weeks of planning and looking at the forecast a

I had been advised to bring along my own wetsuit as it is something they do not hire out. Here I was shown to the lower ground where all the boards were kept and the lessons take place. The Stand up paddle boarding school at The Adrenaline store have a fantastic set up and you are made to feel really comfortable. After a high energy drink and a pep talk we were off. Stand up paddle boarding is for all ages and is something I definitely would recommend for everyone to do, either as a group
or one to one. Being a typical girl I didn’t want to go on my own, so I managed to rope a friend in to coming with me whom, much to my disappointment, had more experience at water sports than I. We spent two hours out on the water, including one hour with an instructor who was very patient and more than happy to share all his knowledge about the sport. He taught us everything he knew about stand up paddle boarding, how to do it safely but most of all how to have fun! After the first hour’s lesson and a couple of slip ups into the water, we were left to our own devices for a further hour. Feeling confident we set off together and had an amazing time.

Stand up paddle boarding is really easy to pick up and is something I would recommend to everyone to try at least once in their life. If you have not done it before, having a lesson really helps and is a great way to spend a morning. Prices start from £30 for 2 hours; 1 hour with an instructor and 1 hour on your own. Plus board hire for £7.50 for 1 hour or £15 for 3 hours.

The Beaver
One of the biggest selling zombie titles of the past decade, ‘The Zombie Diaries’ gets a DVD release (27th) for it’s highly anticipated sequel, ‘World of the Dead’. Three months have passed since a viral outbreak turned its victims into flesh-eating living dead. In the UK, a surviving band of soldiers and civilians have taken refuge at a rural military barracks. Hmmm, I wonder what happens next? Mmmm, brains.
17th, In Cinemas Jodie Foster directs and co-stars with Mel Gibson in this emotional story. Plagued by his own demons, Walter Black was once a successful toy executive and family man who now suffers from depression. No matter what he tries, Walter can’t seem to get himself back on track…until a

beaver hand puppet enters his life.
Rabbit Hole 22nd, On DVD Nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award, Rabbit Hole tells the story of Becca Corbett (Nicole Kidman) and her husband Howard (Aaron Eckhart), who are still struggling, eight months later, to come to terms with the death of their son. As they embark on separate journeys that threaten to pull them apart they also discover new meaning in their lives and have to decide whether these will bring them back together. Based on his own play, screenwriter David LindsayAbaire and director John Cameron Mitchell have crafted a film that is both honest and sensitive without being over sentimental
(which is no mean feat given the subject material). For a film about grief it is surprisingly light hearted in places but the whole piece would feel hollow without this tremendous ensemble that, without exception, delivers the emotional punch that the script deserves. I’ve always viewed Nicole Kidman as Hollywood’s version of the Emperors New Clothes but here she turns in an astonishing performance that has made me totally re-evaluate her as an actress. Not to take anything away from Eckhart who is also superb but it’s Kidman that makes Rabbit Hole a truly compelling piece of cinema.
Green Lantern
Sounds offbeat enough to finally get
17th, In Cinemas After Batman’s successful return to the silver screen, DC comics kick start a brand new franchise. Although not their most high profile character, the presence of Ryan Reynolds and director Martin Campbell should help catapult Green Lantern into the public eye. Footage released so far looks as if there will be enough spectacle and reverence to keep both the general public and the fans happy.

Summer drinks means afternoon drinks. Afternoon drinks mean that friends and their offspring can meet up and relax while they enjoy Brighton on a sunny day and having a much needed pint. However I have noticed that some pubs in town started to put up fearful looking “No Kids” signs. Thus, I felt it prudent to round up a list of boozers that openly welcome the little’uns one and all.
Pub With No Name

children. Serves Mexican food. Yay.
Another muesli mountain favourite. Keep an eye when you’re looking for it as it doesn’t have any signage, as its title would suggest. It’s in a three-way tie of best roast in Brighton along with the Yeoman and the Caxton. Has a poker night on Thursdays that I assume isn’t participated in by
The Walmer Castle
The Chimney House
95 Queens Park Road, 01273 682466 If there is one pub that embodies Hanover it is The Walmer. Chock full of muesli mountain types and their offspring seemingly in a perpetual state of carnival. Serves Thai food from Monday to Saturday 6 – 10 and a 12 – 4 lunch service on Saturdays. At weekends they have live bands and DJs. On Sundays they switch Thai to classic English breakfasts and roasts.
28 Upper Hamilton Road, 01273 556708 Since it changed hands and transformed from a slightly formidable place into a trendy gastro pub, it has become a resort for the yummy mummy brigade. Very upmarket with the cuisine and serves fine wines as well as the odd pint. A very extensive kid’s menu available featuring imaginative dishes. Has a fantastic function room available for private hire.
The Lord Nelson
Preston Park Tavern
36 Trafalgar Street, 01273 695872 One of Brighton’s most underrated pubs for my money. Looks and feels like a classic boozer but has a decidedly modern system of management and service. Serves the full range of Harvey’s ales as well as extremely good value food. For example the Nelson Burger with chips comes at only £5.95. Highly recommended for an afternoon drink and bite to eat.
88 Havelock Road, 01273 542271 Very modern, clean and stylish the Preston Park Tavern is widely considered one of the best places to eat in Brighton. Well lit and bright interior. Unsurprisingly it is another gastro pub so the emphasis here is the food rather than the drink. Having said that they serve no less than 22 distinctive wines you can wash your fancy grub down with.
Sussex Yeoman
The Park Crescent
7 Guildford Road, 01273 327985
39 Park Crescent Terrace, 01273 604993 A great pub just off the Level with a huge decked beer garden that’s great for kids to explore while the adults enjoy a pint. Serves beers which are brewed at Hall & Woodhouse’s Badger Brewery in Dorset, and the food from its own Thai Kitchen. Can get very raucous and very messy here, but that’s why I recommend it.
Really near the station and a great central meeting place if your group is coming from all over. The Yeoman is an extremely popular pub renowned for its food and laid back ambience. Put it this way, if you want to eat there: book. Absolutely compulsory. If you don’t you will be disappointed as I have been a good few times. 22

James Blake
After a couple of ridiculously warm months, it would only be fitting that June is a complete washout to temper your sun-kissed moods. But whatever the weather decides to do this month, you can count on a great line-up of gigs to ease you in to the summer holidays. From local acts looking to make it big to established stars dropping in; June’s gonna be a good one.
Mon 13th, Komedia The precocious young talent is heading to Brighton to play tracks from his critically acclaimed debut album, including the smash rehash “Limit ToYour Love”. Although massively hyped, Blake genuinely seems to be on the cusp of superstardom. With his intricate mix of dub lines and soul-piercing vocals, if he carries on in this prolific form, there’ll be no limits to what he can achieve. jamesblakemusic.com

Jetglo
We Are Scientists
Wed 1st , Latest Music Bar Jetglo have been described as “singa-longa-rock” in the past and the Brighton-based alt-rockers certainly know how to craft a perfectly formed ditty for your ears to fall in love with. With sharp hooks and melodic choruses from Brighton’s own, they’ll bring a smile to your face and a swing to your step - what could be better on a summer’s day on the coast? myspace.com/jetglomusic
Fri 17th, Concorde 2 Known nearly as much for their whimsical videos and sly humour, the fun-loving American indie heroes are back on our shores to provide you with love, laughs, and more than a hint of danceable rock and/or roll. With an impressive back catalogue and new songs to be thrown into the mix, don’t miss out on what promises to be a lively stage show. wearescientists.com
Matthew Morrison
Cyndi Lauper
Sat 11th, Brighton Centre If you like super smash-hit show Glee (you probably either love it or hate it), then chances are that you’ll want to get down to the seafront to see Matthew Morrison (aka heart-throb teacher Will Schuester) performing material from his solo album. Bring earplugs and tissues, as there most definitely will be screaming, tears and a lot of dancing. And maybe some showtunes. matthewmorrison.com
Tue 28th , Dome Concert Hall With over 30m record sales, everybody knows who Cyndi Lauper is and she’s heading down here with tracks old and new for your delighted faces. Her 2010 album ‘Memphis Blues’ was nominated for a Grammy, so Lauper most certainly still has the knack for a good tune. So, if you just want to have fun time after time (sorry), then Cyndi’s your girl. cyndilauper.com
Gregory Alan Isakov
The Duke Spirit
Fri 10th, Prince Albert The wonderfully-named Gregory Alan Isakov is an indie folk rock artist from Colorado in the States. Despite his demure appearance, he is known for his gigantic voice and expert guitar skills - big plus points. After touring with the likes of Rodrigo y Gabriela and gaining strong support from critics and fans alike, grab him while he’s still playing intimate venues like the Albert. gregoryalanisakov.com
Fri 3rd, Audio This talented London-based band have been creeping along steadily since 2003, and after a string of prestigious appearances on hit US shows such as David Letterman and Jay leno, this may be the year that they finally duke it out with the mainstream heavyweights. With the beguiling Liela Moss leading the way on vocals, try to catch them before they undoubtedly go big stateside. thedukespirit.com
