ourcity Since 2008 the country has seen not just the financial crash, but the onset of austerity in public spending. That year was the last time the city developed an economic strategy – five years ago and in an incredibly different context. While we’ve weathered the economic crisis relatively well, we can’t be complacent. So last year the local Economic Partnership (made up of business representatives) and the council co-commissioned a new Economic Strategy. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

The Economic Strategy The Economic Strategy sets out key issues and priorities for our local economy until 2018 and that argues we should build on our city’s unique economic strengths and develop a more sustainable economy for the city that’s diverse, resilient and better-balanced. For example, we’re already internationallyknown for being a cultural and leisure tourist destination. So the new strategy proposes to make the most of this by prioritising investment in our city’s yearround conference venues, which will both improve the facilities and attract more visitors. We’ve already combined forces with colleagues in neighbouring councils on a variety of issues, ranging from accessing government funding to bidding for UN Biosphere status. So in the coming years we plan to continue working with colleagues to secure greater investment in infrastructure, development and training. Local creative, digital, IT and environmental businesses are booming, so we plan to support 4

a network of eco technology hubs so that these companies can network with, learn from and use each other. These would also be linked to research and development work done at the universities, making the most of the enormous resource there. Clearly we have some huge opportunities ahead, but with limited funding it’s crucial that we make the most of it. Having been developed in conjunction with local businesses, this strategy means that we’re won’t just carry on weathering the storm, but flourish despite it.

futureevents August is a great month, we have a bank holiday weekend to look forward to, Reading festival, the last of the decent weather… OK, so you might not think this the best time to be peering into the crystal ball which is the What’s On Guide Future section. But fear ye not! We’ve got all kinds of events to keep you interested; even if the sun doesn’t stick around… Gareth Becker: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Bestival Thurs 5th Sept - Sun 8th Sept, Robin Hill County Park, Isle of Wight Curated and organised by DJ Rob da Bank, Isle of Wight’s September festie is back with a huge line-up. Stewart Lee Thurs 19th - Fri 20th Sept, The Brighton Dome He’s been called the most exciting comic gigging today and, I can confirm, he is hilariously funny. He used to be on the radio, one half of Lee and Herring, oh and remember Jerry Springer The Opera? He co-wrote and co- directed it. His new stand up show is appearing soon as part of the Brighton Comedy Festival. brightondome.org

White Wizzard Fri 27th Sept, The Prince Albert These guys are all about their heavy metal. Hailing from LA (that’s California, not the south coast) they’ve released three full length albums since 2007. Although their line-up has been a little... turbulent over the past few years, the word is that they’re back with the strongest lineup to date. Their most recent album ‘The Devil’s Cut’ came out in June. whitewizzardofficial.com 6

July has continued to be busy and, looking to August, there is still a shortage of property so for Tenants consider that if you like a property someone else will too so it’s better to act quickly. If you are a Landlord why not take advantage of our current offer of a 6 month Rent and Legal Warranty for new instructions in August. Following recent media attention on agents fees the best advice I can offer is that you use an ARLA member agent to ensure a professional service. www.psandb.co.uk

beachscreen Years ago I was walking through a small village on a Greek island, and pinned to a battered building was a creased movie poster. Looking closer I saw that it was announcing an open air cinema. Seemed such a weird thing to stumble upon in that location. bestival

bestival Again voted Best UK Major Festival, the Isle of Wight’s biggest & best party Bestival celebrate their HMS Bestival themed 10th birthday at Newport’s Robin Hill Country Park (5th-9th September). Curated by Rob & Josie da Bank, Elton John, Snoop Dogg & Fatboy Slim headline a bill boasting 300+ acts playing across 20 stages – fantastic live music, DJs, comedy, theatre & cinema. Tickets: www.bestival.net / 0844 888 4410 Simon Blackmore: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Elton John In a festival exclusive, pop’s most outrageous son will headline Sunday night at Bestival. Expect a scintillating show filled with glitz and glamour - the perfect megastar to bring Bestival to a close. With 30+ albums and 60+ hit singles to his name, singalong good times are pretty much guaranteed. Get stockpiling those platform boots, feather boas and glitter. It’s going to be a proper party! Fatboy Slim Friday night headliner (Brighton’s own) Fatboy Slim says, “I first saw the glint in Rob’s eye to create his own festival at Glastonbury 2003 (where I closed his Sunday Best stage). Soon I was headlining the first Bestival - ten years on here I am again, throwing them the biggest birthday bash possible. It’s an absolute honour to return for this momentous occasion. You’ve come a long way, baby!” M.I.A. Another UK festival exclusive, M.I.A. (aka Mathangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasam) received huge critical acclaim for her first two albums ‘Arular’ (2005) and ‘Kala’ (2007), being named one of the defining artists of the decade by Rolling Stone. Born in London (and of Tamil descent), M.I.A. seamlessly works a palette of global culture-spanning reference points into her thrilling take on electronic music and will be a huge highlight at Bestival 2013. 18

Savages Savages’ stunning debut ‘Silence Yourself’ was released to huge critical acclaim in May 2013, smashing into the Top 20 Album Chart. Describing their sound as “like a punch in the face”, Savages are a veritable force of nature: visceral, brooding and articulate, with a focus and intelligence sadly AWOL in pop music this decade. Long may they shine, like a beacon in a sea of posho folk and waistcoats. Carl Cox Bestival 2013’s brand new dance arena, The Port, will play host to Richie Hawtin, Annie Mac, Seth Troxler, Julio Bashmore, Erol Alkan, Duke Dumont, Knife Party, and DJ EZ (amongst many others) across the four days, but perhaps the weekend’s most anticipated set sees Besti-favourite Carl Cox return to the Isle of Wight. As the legend himself said recently, “Bestival is always an amazing festival, with great people”. Chic (Feat Nile Rodgers) With his much-missed Chic songwriting partner Bernard Edwards, Nile Rodgers wrote ‘Le Freak, ‘Lost In Music’, ‘Everybody Dance’, ‘Spacer’, ‘Good Times’, ‘We Are Family’, ‘Upside Down’, ‘Saturday’, ‘I Want Your Love’, ‘My Old Piano’ and tonnes more gold-plated disco-pop classics. He also sprinkled his songwriting magic across David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’, Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ and Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ etc. ‘Nuff said - truly unmissable! Rudimental With two big No.1 hit singles, 2012’s ‘Feel The Love’ and this year’s ‘Waiting All Night’, plus a No.1 album already under their belts, East London four-piece Rudimental will get the party started at Bestival this year. Incorporating live instrumentation at every twist and turn (band member Amir Amor even played live spoons at one point during their recent Glastonbury live set), this promises to be one fascinating show.

filmclub

filmclub We may be nearing the end of blockbuster season but there’s still plenty to come in the months ahead with new instalments of ‘Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs’, ‘Paranormal Activity’, ‘Thor’, ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘The Hobbit’ on the horizon. There’s also Spike Lee’s remake of Korean shocker ‘Old Boy’, a new Cohen brothers offering, Harrison Ford in ‘Ender’s Game’, ‘Carrie’ and, most intriguingly, ‘The Harry Hill Movie’. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Passion 12th, On DVD Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace star in this erotic thriller from writer/ director Brian De Palma which explores the rivalry between a manipulative boss and her talented protégée as professional jealousy in an advertising agency quickly escalates to murder. There’s no denying that De Palma is an extremely talented filmmaker who has been behind many iconic moments in film history from ‘Carrie’ to ‘Scarface’, which makes it all the more disappointing to report that this latest offering is far from his finest hour. Although Rapace is immensely watchable that is not enough to save ‘Passion’ from a weak script and some terrible supporting performances. The

22

what’sonaug13

plot propels itself forward more times and faster than a cliff full of lemmings, as does the direction, which only highlights the weak characterisation and becomes incredibly jarring, serving only to remove you from the story. When the nonsensical twist arrives it is as ludicrous and confusing as the denouement. Don’t get me wrong, this is by no means a terrible film but when it comes with a name like Brian De Palma attached you expect more than an average experience, especially as it’s his first film in five years. I’d be inclined to save my money for his 1980 classic, ‘Dressed to Kill’, just out on Blu-Ray, and watch how he once had such a great handle on very similar material.

7th, In Cinemas It was only a matter of time before Steve Coogan’s Radio Norwich presenter got his shot at big screen stardom. Directed by Declan Lowney, who was behind the lens for the recent Partridge Sky Atlantic show and written by a top notch team including Peter (‘Borat’) Baynham and Armando (‘The Thick of It’) Iannucci, this could be a comedy classic in the making.

The Lone Ranger 9th, In Cinemas Director Gore Verbinski tries to replicate the magic of the golden goose that was the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ saga by once again teaming up with Johnny Depp for this Disney blockbuster. Arnie Hammer is the man in the mask but will the Tom and Jerry style action scenes elevate it above the dire Will Smith vehicle, ‘Wild Wild West’ which trod similar ground?

The Gatekeepers

12th, On DVD Nominated for an Academy Award, director Dror Moreh’s insight into Israel’s Secret Service, the Shin Bet, combines in-depth interviews with archival footage and computer animation to shed light on the Occupation after the Six Day War in 1967. Six former heads of the agency talk about their counter-terrorism campaigns, the on-going IsraeliPalestine conflict and the moral dilemmas they were faced with on a daily basis.

Elysium 21st, In Cinemas In ‘District 9’ writer/ director Neill Blomkamp delivered the most original science fiction film in recent memory so when this project was announced it was a relief that he was one hundred percent behind the vision. Matt Damon and Jodie Foster should guarantee a wider audience for this futuristic tale that, once again, looks rich in social commentary, stunning visuals and edge of the seat excitement.

Gadjo Fri 2nd, The Brunswick It’s fair to say that Gadjo are a law unto themselves. If his solo material playing violin with a loop pedal and his beguiling voice wasn’t enough, the Canadian has also worked with Arcade Fire, Beirut, Duran Duran, R.E.M. and The National – if you want string arrangements, Pallett is your guy. He’s a true artist in his own right, and a joy in the flesh. owenpalletteternal.com

Die! Die! Die! Fri16th, Sticky Mike’s The name may threaten your existence, but fear not – this New Zealand trio are merely after your ears, not your essence. With flashes of pop and punk thrown in to noiserock leanings, these guys are loud and have honed their live show after touring the big old world. Having supported the likes of Wolfmother and Franz Ferdinand, you’ll be in safe hands. diediedie.bandcamp.com

Martha Wainwright Thurs 22nd, Komedia She comes from talented stock, does Martha – sister to the one and only Rufus and born to folk folks through and through, the Canadian songstress has a rare gift in that her heartfelt tales seem, well, heartfelt in what can sometimes be a cynically melancholic genre. Wainwright lives up to the family name and is a genuine star performer, so expect a spine-tingling show. marthawainwright.com

The Wedding Present Sat 24th, Concorde 2 Few bands come across with as much wit, sincerity and sexy rock’n’roll as The Wedding Present. Formed in 1985, the Leeds four-piece blend love, desire and heartbreak in tight songs with melodies that burrow like troubled moles into your thoughts. Anybody who’s heard album SEAMONSTERS can attest to their brilliance, so do the right thing – do the only thing – and see them. scopitones.co.uk

summerfestivals

summerfestivals Another August another heap of festivals. Alongside the duality of Bestival and Camp Bestival for those with families, there is also a bunch of smaller festivals, such as the unique Boomtown or the Welsh naturesplosion that is the Green Man Festival; there is a massive amount to choose from. So find those missing tent poles and attempt to hide three crates of beer in a rucksack, it’s festival season again! Andrew Kilpatrick: festivals@whatsonguide.co.uk

Camp Bestival Thur 1st – Sun 4th, Lulworth Castle, Dorset The kid friendly sister festival of the behemothic Bestival is returning for another year of family friendly fun. Whilst aimed at a family setting, the festival’s line up still packs a punch, featuring appearances from Labrinth, Dj Fresh and The Proclaimers, alongside comedians and a plethora of theatre attractions. A great weekend out that will cater for absolutely all ages! campbestival.net

clublife

clublife It never fails to amaze me how many amazing club nights I stumble upon by accident. I’m keeping an eye out for them so it goes without saying that the casual punter is totally unaware of half of the things that go on in our fantastic city. Clubs and promoters sort it out, let your audience know what’s going on and don’t ignore this great resource that’s here to help. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Donky Pitch Fri 2nd, Green Door Store The Donky Pitch team return with another top notch line up of wonky bass and beats. Tonight sees one of LuckyMe‘s latest signings, DJ Paypal and newcomer DJ Booth who is part of Slugabed’s Activia Benz label team take centre stage. They will be joined by local heroes Ghost Mutt and Grinel who will keep your feet moving until the small hours. donkypitch.com

Nightowl With Nice7 Sat 10th, Coalition NiCe7 fly in from Italy for this rare Brighton show. Friends since 2005, the award winning duo of Nicola Daniele and Cesare Marocca have been devastating dance floors worldwide ever since with their unique blend of energetic deep Tech House. Their hard hitting productions and remixes are regularly released on huge labels such as Noir Music, Toolroom and Defected. Don’t miss this one. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/coalition

Sub Bop Fri 16th, The Green Door Store Sub Bop is a night for those who like their music a little bit darker, a little bit dirtier and a little bit more angry than most. DJs Annakey, Mother Love Drone, Danosaur Dewnior and the Rusty Daves deliver a selection of grunge, riot grrrl, alt nineties, punk and shoegaze. Expect anything from Stone Temple Pilots to the Sugarcubes and beyond. thegreendoorstore.co.uk 40

clublife

Sat 17th, Concorde 2 Devotion is celebrating not only a decade of raving but also, sadly, it’s last ever event with an all star line up of beaty goodness. There’s also a top line up of MCs including Skibadee and Fyakid. concorde2.co.uk

Warehouse With Simian Mobile Disco Sat 17th, Audio Warehouse continues to bring you the best that dance music has to offer, all for free before the witching hour. Acclaimed producers and remixers James Ford and James Shaw have been rocking dancefloors under their SMD alias since 2005. Their production CV includes the best in indie and dance acts and their DJ sets never fail to blow the roof off. audiobrighton.com

Tensnake Fri 23rd, Concorde 2 German producer Marco Niemerski has so many anthemic productions under his belt as Tensnake that this can’t fail to be a fantastic night. Best known for his 2010 track ‘Coma Cat’, which appeared on at least fifteen compilations that year he has since gone from strength to strength and recently signed a deal with Virgin Records. Local legend Neil Schtumm also spins some tunes. tensnake. tumblr.com

The Stick It On & Bust The Box 15th Birthday Sun 25th, King & Queen It’s been fifteen years since these two legendary nights first hit the scene and to celebrate they’ll be throwing one hell of a party.
