ourcity
ourcity What does Brighton & Hove sound like to you? Do you think of the waves breaking on the beach, chatter of crowds in the city centre on a weekend, or the drone and rumble of vehicles on our main roads? Sound in our environments has been a growing area for research around the world, especially in urban areas where residents tend to live, work and play in close quarters. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George
Sonorus Project We’re one of four cities involved in SONORUS, a European-funded project led by Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden to do some more work in this area. SONORUS brings together fourteen researchers and representatives from Brighton & Hove, Berlin, Antwerp, and Rome to look at the impact noise has on residents, and how the ‘soundscape’ can be improved. Also involved are the Noise Abatement Society, independent experts and an academic from Brighton University. Through this project we’ll be able to share information on how urban sounds can be controlled, areas protected and shielded, and how noise from developments such as new buildings, or increased road traffic, can be planned for. It will build on pilot projects we’ve already run in the city including on the busy nighttime experience on West Street. We know that noise nuisance can have significant impacts on people’s physical and mental health through stress, sleep 4
what’sonapril13
disturbance and changing how people behave in public spaces. During the pilot on West Street the Police reported needing far fewer officers as crowds behaved better when experiencing a different soundscape. At a time when we are improving a range of open and public spaces – such as Valley Gardens, Providence Place and The Level – we will be able to include ways to reduce noise nuisance for residents in the process. This kind of work helps to significantly improve residents’ quality of life in the city.

filmclub
filmclub It’s time to catch your breath before the onslaught of the summer blockbuster season begins in earnest next month. Before then why not catch up on a film that you may have missed first time round. An overlooked road movie from 1973, ‘Scarecrow’, gets a limited re-release in cinemas from the 26th. Al Pacino and Gene Hackman star as an ex-con drifter and a homeless ex-sailor heading through America together. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk
The Evil Dead 19th In Cinemas The original ‘Evil Dead’ trilogy are held in such high regard by the horror community that when this remake was first mooted it was met by derision by the fans until two of the original creative team stepped up. Director/writer Sam Raimi and original star Bruce Campbell gave their full endorsement to first time film maker Fede Alvarez, who was to take control of this impossible task, and the despair became anticipation. The faithful need not have worried as, where previous remakes of horror classics have just borrowed the main antagonist and thrown away the rest (‘Friday The 13th’’ I’m looking at you) this new film is a remake, not a reboot, and definitely feels like a proper ‘Evil Dead’ movie. This time round a group of friends gather in the creepy cabin in the woods as an intervention for heroin addict Mia (Jane Levy) but it’s not long before they discover an ancient book and all hell, literally, breaks loose. I was lucky enough to see the original when it first came out on VHS in the
20
what’sonapril13
early eighties and can still remember the impact its originality had on me. Thirty years on, audiences are more sophisticated but have become desensitised so this was going to have to hit hard and does it ever. The press screening I attended had everyone wincing and laughing in equal measure as various things were plunged in, pulled out or lopped off in graphic detail. The original had a feeling of creeping dread alongside a certain charm and humour which seems to be missing in this version but Deadites won’t leave disappointed as the cartoon violence is cranked up to eleven and some of Raimi’s trademark camera moves are faithfully recreated. Overall this is a lot of fun, will introduce the ‘Evil Dead’ experience to a whole new generation and I recommend seeing it on the big screen to maximise enjoyment but make sure you stick around until after the credits for the ultimate endorsement.

12th, In Cinemas In what looks like a role to rival his excellent performance in the also excellent ‘Drive’, Ryan Gosling plays a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks to provide for his lover and their newborn child. This brings him to the attention of a rookie cop (Bradley Cooper) struggling in a police force ruled over by a corrupt detective (Ray Liotta).
Oblivion 12th, In Cinemas I will hold my hands up and say that I am not a big fan of Tom Cruise but must say that this looks special. The internet is abuzz that the new trailer gives away too much plot so I won’t incur their wrath but suffice to say if you like your sci-fi post apocalyptic and with a smattering of aliens then this is for you.
The Look of Love 26th, In Cinemas Director Michael Winterbottom and Steve Coogan once again team up; this time for a biopic about Paul Raymond, the controversial entrepreneur who became Britain’s richest man through his porn industry in the seventies. Their last collaboration, ’24 Hour Party People’, was a classic so there are high hopes for this one and, once again, look out for the cream of Britain’s acting talent.
Iron Man 3 26th, In Cinemas The last time we saw Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) he was fighting alongside the mightiest of Marvel Comics’ roster in ‘Avengers Assemble’ but how will he adjust to his own life after this. Borrowing heavily from the ‘Extremis’ comic book arc and featuring Ben Kingsley as the villainous Mandarin this comes in 3D and promises to be bigger and better than its predecessors.

Don Broco Tues 16th, Concorde 2 If it’s tight, stylish alt-rock you’re after, then look no further than hip Bedford four-piece Don Broco. Ludovico Einaudi Thurs 25th, Dome Now here’s a man who knows his piano. I’ve seen the Italian genius in concert before and it really is an experience; Einaudi manages to create delicate compositions full of vigour and emotion which almost feel alive at times, sweeping you off your feet in a helpless mess of joy and blubbering. He looks like Larry David and he is pretty, pretty, pretty good. einaudiwebsite.com

clublife We are now well into Bank Holiday season so over the next few months there will be even more chances to check out our wonderful club scene. Why not take the opportunity to visit some of the nights that take place on a Sunday? Regular nights occur at Coalition and the Volks to name but two and there are a few more hidden gems out there so explore and enjoy. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk
Missing Cat Club Fri 12th, Komedia Missing Cat Club is a new night that aims to entertain. Playing music designed for the dancefloor, styled from the dancehalls of Jamaica to the bedsits of Brixton and the nightclubs of Berlin. Resident DJs General Panic (DF 118/Dreadzone DJ), Leon C (MCC), Andy Chick and Maxi Mcgoo (Fluid), plus regular guests and live artists are on hand to bring up the dance. komedia.co.uk/brighton
Ultimate Power Sat 13th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Ultimate Power is a communal appreciation of colossal musical compositions from the titans of Power Ballads; Messrs Collins, Loaf, Tyler and Jovi and many, many more besides. Every single song is a classic, known and loved by all, and every single song is never played at any other night except here. Bring your air instruments and leave inhibitions at the bar. ultimatepowerclub.com
Pop Not Pop Sat 13th, Green Door Store Still going strong and playing all their favourite pop gems both old and new, Pop Not Pop plays homage to the often misunderstood genre of pop. It’s best to arrive early to avoid the queues, cold air, seagulls and wolves as it’s normally packed to the rafters. See you on the wonky dancefloor for a night of musical surprises and singalongs. thegreendoorstore.co.uk 38
