ourcity I was delighted to open the gates the southern part of The Level a few weeks ago, following our major restoration of the park. When finished, The Level will have a new skatepark, children’s playground, dancing fountains, a sensory garden, tables for board games, ping pong and pétanque terrain. Early 1920s’ historic features have been restored, including the park pavilions, now to be used, to provide community rooms and exhibition spaces. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George
The Level Restoration Central to the ‘new’ Level will be an environmentally-friendly café run by a team of local entrepreneurs and with eco-friendly features such as a chalk grassland green roof. Extensive new planting and landscaping have also been carried out and additional seating provided. Our restoration project was supported by a £2.2m Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund grant. The skatepark also received £150,000 grant funding from Sports England. And an Aiming High Grant of £65,000 has also been awarded to help make the park more accessible for all. The playground has many pieces of equipment suitable for children with disabilities. New public toilets will include easy wheelchair access. Improvements in lighting, CCTV and the presence of a full-time park manager will also help to deter antisocial behaviour. A Sussex Police Community Hub will be stationed in the park for a three month trial. Members of the local Neighbourhood Policing 4

Team will be working from the building for part of the day. The park’s official Grand Opening Event – including the café and the rest of the north lawns – will take place in early October. However we decided to open some key recreational areas early so that they could be enjoyed by families during the summer holidays – and they’ve been incredibly popular. I hope that everyone is able to visit this revamped public space in the heart of our city, and join us for the official opening later this autumn

The August market has been crazy with plenty of new instructions and even more applicants, we are now in a position where demand is far outstripping supply and properties are being rented as far in advance as October due to the shortage. Rents have increased as a result so if you are a Landlord, or a vendor struggling to sell, this is a great time to market your property. If you are looking to rent then you will need to make quick decisions and also look further in advance to secure the ideal property. www.psandb.co.uk

Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit Sat 12th Oct, St. George’s Church Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit grew out of the same nu-folk scene which gave rise to Mumford and Sons and Noah and the Whale. While they may not have achieved the commercial success of their contemporaries, they are arguably more original and more inspiring. I can’t recommend this gig highly enough, especially in this intimate venue. ents24.com

Best known for their song ‘Heartbeats’, popularised by Jose Gonzales, veterans of their gigs often sport far-away looks as they recount how The Knife question the limit of what music, and even what performance, can be. food I should have been born Italian or French because of my passion for food. Eating, sharing, cooking – I love it all. When in Italy visiting a friend of mine living out there I find that food is a bonding thing for families and you all eat together at least once a day. Hence you prepare food with love meaning using good quality fresh ingredients. We should all live this way. Will Paton: will@whatsonguide.co.uk

sd2
sd2 Shakedown’s organisers are introducing a new festival for Brighton in 2013 – SD2. On Sunday 29th September, Stanmer Park will host some of the UK’s biggest pop acts. The Wanted, The Saturdays and Conor Maynard will play for the only time in Sussex this year, alongside rising stars The Vamps, A*M*E and Hobbie Stuart. That’s 6 big acts for 6 hours of the finest pop music for the whole family. editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk
The Wanted Since 2009, The Wanted have established themselves as one of the UK’s biggest boy bands, with success across the pond as well. With two top 5 albums, and nine top 10 singles, the boys will release their new album ‘Word of Mouth’ the week of SD2. With their only performance in Sussex in 2013, SD2 is the place for fans of The Wanted this summer.
The Saturdays Barely a day that goes by that Una, Rochelle, Mollie, Vanessa or Frankie don’t grace the tabloid pages. Their rise to becoming household names has been mirrored by their chart success. The past six years have seen pop anthems like ‘Up’, ‘All Fired Up’ and number 1 hit ‘What About Us’. With their fourth studio album expected this Autumn, The Saturdays are unquestionably the UK’s foremost girl group.
Conor Maynard Brighton born and bred, Conor Maynard may only be 20 years old but he already has millions of fans all over the world. His debut album ‘Contrast’, released last year, reached number 1 on the UK Album Chart, featuring his smash hits ‘Vegas Girl’, ‘Turn Around’ and ‘Animal.’ His fans – the self-proclaimed Mayniacs – are sure to flock to his only 2013 Brighton show at SD2 in September. 18

Vin Diesel returns for a third outing as everyone’s favourite optically enhanced bad ass in ‘Riddick’ (4th), Channing Tatum protects Jamie Foxx’s president in ‘White House Down’ (6th), Halle Berry stars in ‘The Call’ (20th), and Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal go toe to toe in ‘Prisoners’ (27th). Here Comes The Devil 16th, On DVD
This Spanish language Mexican horror centres on a married couple (Francisco Barreiro and Laura Caro) who lose their children whilst they are left alone to explore some mysterious caves. The children eventually return but it is apparent that they have been changed by some terrifying ordeal. This is my first exposure to the work of writer/ director Adrian Garcia Bogliano but after this I will definitely be catching up with his earlier work. He is obviously influenced by a host of classic filmmakers including Mario Bava and Roman Polanski in his linking of sex and horror but touches on some pretty disturbing themes without it feeling in any way an exercise in exploitation. This

is character driven horror at its best and there are some great performances from all concerned. The low budget feel of the film only acts to accentuate the air of unease that pervades throughout and brings to mind some of the great shockers of the seventies and early eighties, using sound to enormous effect. The plot slowly develops to keep you guessing at every turn which is a welcome relief from the sign posted fare that is usually served up in the genre. ‘Here Comes the Devil’ (‘Ahi va el Diablo’) comes highly recommended and demonstrates that Mexico can put the glossy CGI horror output of its geographical neighbour to shame.

Tues 3rd, Duke of York’s Recently released and remastered by the BFI this is a rare opportunity to catch the Hitchcock classic starring Ray Milland and Grace Kelly as it was originally intended to be seen – in 3D. The screening will be followed by a discussion with special guests including film historian Ian Christie about the pros and cons of 3D film making.
Don’t Look Now 40th Anniversary Screening Sunday 8th, Duke of York’s Nicolas Roeg’s controversial psychological thriller starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie gets a rare showing on the big screen. After the screening local filmmaker Ben Wheatley (‘Sightseers’, ‘Kill List’) will be interviewing Roeg about his career which encompasses some of the most iconic British films of all time including ‘Performance’, ‘Walkabout’ and ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’.
Rush 13th, In Cinemas Oscar winning director Ron Howard turns his attention to Formula One racing in this biopic about the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt. Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, seems a perfect choice for Hunt and it’s written by Peter Morgan who was responsible for ‘Frost/Nixon’ and ‘The Queen’. It looks like it will faithfully recreate the era of hard drinking womanisers with egos to match.
R.I.P.D 20th, In Cinemas Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds team up for this Dark Horse comic adaptation. Reynolds plays a recently murdered cop who joins a team of undead police officers, the Rest in Peace Department, to track down his killer’s identity. This has a strong whiff of ‘Men in Black’ about it but looks like a lot of fun and recently, Bridges has proved he is still immensely watchable.

barlife I may be biased seeing as I’m also a football journalist, but it’s finally time for that most divisive of sports to return to our stadiums and small screens once again. So crack out your favourite replica Albion shirt and find some of these top venues for a good sing-song and an inevitably glorious/sour evening as your team win/fail again. It is big, it’s not clever, but it is FOOTBALL… Tom Doyle: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk
World’s End 60-61 London Road, 01273 692311 With awesome BBQ food, drinks and a large projector and plasma TVs to watch games on, the World’s End takes some beating when it comes to watching sports. It’s a dream come true for most football fans, but for those that don’t like the beautiful game, there’s also table tennis to while your nearest and dearest shout to the skies in frustration. drinkinbrighton.co.uk
Beaufort 175 Queens Park Road, 01273 625429 A six-foot screen you say? Well, that swings it – what better way to watch your team collapse under no pressure at all? With Thai food the order of the day as well, you’re pretty much set for the weekend regardless of the result. There’s free Wi-Fi so you can immediately tweet angry diatribes to your heart’s content, so you have no excuses. drinkinbrighton.co.uk
Fiddler’s Elbow 11 Boyce’s Street, 01273 325850 What better way to combine watching live sports than by being wedged into a bustling Irish pub? I’ve been here a few times and it’s a great venue, and with a big screen to enjoy ‘the football’ and closing at 3am on a Saturday, you may well stay till the sun rises on Sunday. The DJ will see you through victory or defeat. drinkinbrighton.co.uk 26

livemusic I hope you’ve all enjoyed the actual, bonafide, real summer we’ve had – while the beach may end up a mess when the sun comes out, we’re also left with some great memories. All together now – awwww! This month I bring you the weird and the wonderful in spades. We’ve got a fantastic mix of seasoned veterans, new young upstarts, and … cricket-based folk-rock?!? I told you it’d be weird … Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
Crocodiles Mon 2nd, Sticky Mike’s This band has bite… got snappy rhythm… great timing… whatever lazy jokes I come up with won’t do justice to the San Diego duo’s effortless rock and/or roll. Song like ‘Endless Flowers’ are made for the end of the night when you’ve had too much and the dance floor’s calling your name when nobody else will. Support act Theo Verney is awesome too. See you later, alligators. killkillkillcrocodiles. blogspot.co.uk
Dawes Weds 4th, The Haunt The LA quartet recorded their debut album ‘North Hills’ live on analogue tape, which is perhaps why everybody that hears it immediately thinks of Crosby Stills & Nash. ‘From A Window Seat’ shows effortless class in terms of song writing, whereas ‘When My Time Comes’ sounds like the direction Kings Of Leon should’ve taken five years ago. Beautiful stuff and, quite literally, barnstorming fun. dawestheband.com
No Ceremony/// Tue 17th, The Hope If you like your dance floor electro with a little more heart and honesty than usual, you’ll love No Ceremony/// - even with a name to make pedantic punctuators among you annoyed. James, Kelly and Victoria (bass and singer) combine to get your feet moving and your heart aching – listen to ‘Feelsoslow’ and try not to choke back the tears while your toes tap. noceremony.com 32

The Duckworth Lewis Method

Fri 20th, St George’s Church If you’ve ever wondered why nobody has made it big with cricket-themed songs, then I can’t help you. But The Duckworth Lewis Method are set to change that. With the Ashes in full swing (geddit?), their unique brand of ‘crick-hop’ with songs like ‘It’s Just Not Cricket’ should go down a storm. The only thing that’s left to say is howzat?! myspace.com/dlmethod
Swim Deep Wed 25th, Concorde 2 The buzz surrounding these guys is bigger than a beehive in bar of drunkards, and for good reason. Having formed last year and toured with Two Door Cinema Club and Bastille, Swim Deep are set for big things. The West Midlands four-piece have an ear for a hook (King City is a highlight) and channel 1990s’ Manchester through their amps, so dive in. swim-deep.tumblr.com
Wire Wed 25th, Komedia They’ve been going from strength to strength since 1976, and chances are if you’ve played the guitar since that year then Wire have had an influence on you. Considered by many as integral to the birth of post-punk, Colin Newman & co. aren’t afraid to mess around with structure, synths and pedals in order to get you bouncing. Go and Dot Dash your heart out. pinkflag.com
CocoRosie Fri 27th, Brighton Dome Image is usually important in a band – so it helps when one half of the duo has posed for Italian Vogue. That said, music is the key thing, so it’s handy that sister act CocoRosie have talent in spades. It’s impossible to pin them the duo down to one genre, so fans of the likes of Bjork will go nuts for the electro/folk/soul mash. cocorosiemusic.com

shakedown Back for its third year, Shakedown is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. On Saturday 28th September 2013, 20,000 revelers will descend upon Stanmer Park for the city’s largest festival. With a new brand house music arena, open-sided tents and a line-up to rival the UK’s finest, Brighton’s homegrown event looks set to close the festival season in some style. www.shakedown.co.uk editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk
Rizzle Kicks It’s pretty apt that arguably Brighton’s most successful musical export in recent years will be headlining their hometown festival. And the timing couldn’t be better – hip hop duo Jordan and Harley are back this summer with brand new single ‘Lost Generation’, taken from their forthcoming new album Roaring 20s. It’s no coincidence that its released just weeks before Shakedown and going to be a very special moment indeed.
Labrinth The fact that Labrinth was Simon Cowell’s first non-talent show signing in 6 years says it all. In just one massive album ‘Electronic Earth’, Labrinth has already established himself as one of the most respected and popular artists in the UK, with artists queuing up to collaborate. Renowned for his live show, he’ll make one of very few summer appearances on the main stage of Shakedown in September.
Main Stage The rest of the main stage line-up is mightily impressive. Soul superstar Maverick Sabre will undoubtedly shine, as will Drum & Bass master DJ Fresh with his full live show. Mix in Delilah, Jaguar Skills, Mikill Pane, Jacob Plant, Eden Royals and local legendary DJ Mike Panteli - the best 10 hours of music money can buy. If you like your music more dance-focused, Shakedown’s also got it covered… 38

Supercharged Arena How to top last year’s ‘huge’ Supercharged Arena? Simple… bass overlords Nero will be joined by man of the moment Sub Focus, whose new album is out just days before. Zane Lowe returns and 2013 will also see a RAM Records takeover with Andy C, Loadstar, Wilkinson and Delta Heavy. Add in Krafty Kuts, A Skillz plus a huge change for this year – open-sided tents = no queues!
Audio Arena Brand new for 2013 – something for house music fans! The addition of another new tent brings in headliner and Queen of all things House… Annie Mac! Another legend of the genre, Kerri Chandler, joins the line-up alongside the likes of Toddla T sound, MK, Hot Since 82 and DEVolution. Local heroes Enzo Siffredi, Marlon Mahroyan, Neal Schtumm and Charles Green make the Audio Arena the place to be.
VIP Shakedown are stepping up the 2013 VIP area. Hosted by Brighton clubbing institution Inyaear, VIP will be a luxury haven to take a break from the raving! There’s a cocktail bar, draught beer, picnic benches & beds, a pamper lounge, masseurs and – of course – posh loos! Plus - going in a group or on a work do? You can reserve VIP tables complete with drinks. Email VIP@shakedown.co.uk
