ourcity Over 1.5 million Indian army soldiers served alongside British and other Commonwealth troops during World War I. The first Indian troops arrived in France in September 1914 to fight on the Western Front. Many were killed or wounded, and the casualties were so great in number that thousands of soldiers had to be sent back from France to towns on the south coast of England to be treated. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George
The Chattri Memorial Service Brighton was one of the towns that offered to help nurse Indian casualties. During the war about 12,000 wounded Indian soldiers were moved to makeshift hospitals around Brighton, famously including the Royal Pavilion, the Dome and the Corn Exchange. A fascinating exhibition in the Royal Pavilion shows how Indian soldiers were housed and nursed in the palace during the war. Remarkably of the thousands that came here only 72 Indian soldiers passed away, earning the city the nickname ‘Doctor Brighton’ back in India. Just outside the Pavilion at the entrance to the Gardens, the Pavilion Gateway stands as a gift from the people of India to the Brighton, as a thank you for caring for their soldiers so well. The ‘Chattri’ memorial stands on the Downs near Patcham, on the spot where 53 Hindu and Sikh soldiers were cremated after passing away in the city’s hospitals, in accordance with 4

their religious beliefs. It was built and unveiled in 1921 in memory of all Indian soldiers who died during World War I, and it overlooks the Downs and the city. Each year there is a wonderful memorial service organised by local community groups at the monument to commemorate them. The Chattri Memorial Service reminds us of a fascinating part of our multicultural history, and is an important way to remember the contributions made by Indian and other soldiers during World War I. food
food Not sure about you but there seems to be a better quality of food outlets in the city and businesses are upping their game which is great for us. I have another guilty pleasure and it’s Mexican. So if I am out and about it’s Carlito’s Mexican Street unit nicely positioned opposite The Prince Albert Pub on Trafalgar street or, for sit down, La Choza. Justin Williams: justin@whatsonguide.co.uk
La Choza
36 Gloucester Road, Brighton 01273 945926 / www.lachoza.co.uk You may already have discovered this treasure in the North Laines and if you have then you were probably lucky to get a seat. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in to find that there are no seats available and there’s a long waiting list. I first ate here on my birthday in April with a couple of mates on a lunch time mid-week – busy! The interior strikes you immediately and the friendly staff are always welcoming. That’s a good sign. We were shown to our table, promptly given menus and asked if we wanted a drink. Indeed we did - beers all round for my birthday! We ordered a sharing plate of Nachos which arrived quickly and tucked in to the freshly made salsa and guacamole on nachos. They have a system in place 1: decide on your base - a choice of burrito, quesadilla, tostadas or burrito bowl. I went for quesadilla. 16
what’sonjuly13
2: Choose the filling, from beef, chicken, pork, chorizo and vegetarian options. Slow cooked beef for me. 3: Choose a variety of salsa on offer. I went for the cooked chipotle salsa (medium). Ten minutes later it arrives presented in a basket and the moment I tasted it the flavours came through. Normally I find with spiced foods that the spices can be over bearing but these flavours seem to come through individually so no one spice annihilates the others. A second beer would be required and they have a good selection of Mexican ones and most important - super cold. No more room for a dessert. Just the bill and we were off. A great eaterie in the heart of the city. Go and discover, plus I know they have an outdoor catering unit taking their magic to the masses at outdoor events and festivals, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Having now released seven albums and having headlined the huge Benicassim Festival in Spain, this will be Hawley’s first ever UK festival headline slot – don’t miss it...

The anticipation of idyllic sun soaked Enid Blyton style days is tempered with the knowledge that two weeks in the dreaded word “bored” will be uttered by adults as well as kids. filmclub
filmclub This month brings a real mixed bag to the screen. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright wrap up their ‘Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy’ with ‘The Worlds End’ (19th), Sofia Coppola brings us ‘The Bling Ring’ (5th) and ‘Smurfs 2’ (31st) jumps out at us in 3D. Hitchcock’s classic ‘Dial M for Murder’ also bizarrely gets a 3D makeover (26th) and there’s a limited re release for ‘Akira’ (13th). Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk
Maniac 1st, On DVD Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, Halloween – all iconic horror films that inevitably would get the remake treatment but who would have thought that William Lustig’s 1980 video nasty would join their beastly ranks. Director Franck Khalfoun obviously thought it was a good idea as he now presents Elijah Wood as the scalp obsessed, mannequin restorer obsessed with a young, beautiful artist. Filmed (almost) totally from the serial killer’s point of view, ‘Maniac’ is an extremely dark and stylish remake that is faithful to the original but also carves out (sorry) its own niche. This is probably one of the bravest

roles of Mr Wood’s career and he handles the job admirably, delivering an understatedly unhinged performance. If you have a thing for his cuter than cute portrayal of Frodo Baggins then stay away as you may never be able to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy again. With a great score that is reminiscent of the best of John Carpenter and a curt nod to ‘Taxi Driver’ and David Lynch, this will appeal to fans of early Abel Ferrara flicks and 2011’s ‘Drive’. Extremely brutal, often disturbing and difficult viewing at times, this is a compelling film that doesn’t pull its punches.

livemusic It’s July, and you know what that means? Well, since we don’t have real summers any more – rather, a tingle of hope mixed with grey drudgery from the heavens – you don’t really. That was a lie. Though the sky may fall, I can promise it means more of the same in terms of a stellar musical line-up for this beautiful town, from hyped electro to furious folk and home grown legends. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
White Cliff Wed 3rd, Audio It’s fair to say that Liverpool’s a musical town (not a patch on Manchester, mind), but indie five-piece White Cliff look like another fine Liverpudlian product. If track ‘5 Minutes’ is anything to go by, you’ll be swooning and swaying whether you like it or not. Oh, and my band Artifacts are supporting, so, y’know, get down there early – or I won’t be happy. facebook.com/WeAreWhiteCliff
Ezio Thurs 4th, Komedia When I say folk, you may think of smug young men in tweed updating Instagram accounts, but Ezio are not of that ilk. Going strong since 1990, the four-piece have a genuine edge to their sound as heard on ‘Higher’ much-needed in an age where misery is the currency of the young. But fear not, as joy bursts like sunlight through a countryside cloud. zone.ezio.co.uk
Ms Mr Thurs 11th, The Haunt If you’re yet to release an album but can count Usher and Jay-Z among your fans, you’re doing something right. American duo Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow combine melodramatic strings, epic vocals and electro beats for something alien yet still homely pop at heart – check out the negative bubblegum pop video of ‘Hurricane’ and you’ll catch my drift. This will be a treat. msmrsounds.com 32
