ourcity Many readers will know of the Brighthelm Centre in the North Laine, and some will know about the changes that have been taking place over recent months. The Centre has been going through a major overhaul to modernise and revamp the community facilities there. The garden has been tidied by a team of volunteers, and now includes edible plants growing in raised beds and there will be further work next year. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Brighthelm Centre Refurbishment I recently saw the lovely refurbished café area, which has a new glass frontage and doors to welcome people in from North Road. The café serves reasonably-priced food and drink, including fair trade as well as local, seasonable and sustainable products. They have also taken on two apprenticeships in the café, working closely with the catering department at nearby City College. The outside of the building has been cleaned and repaired - including both the historic Hanoverian facade dating from 1825, and the modern side on North Road. The community rooms are going to be given a significant makeover too and universal free wifi and broadband are already available. And the Brighthelm pre-school has just been given a colourful overhaul, is expanding its hours of operation for local parents and can now take up to 30 children aged 2-5. Finally, Brighthelm plans to be a green hub for the city, and now hosts organisations such as Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Food Matters, Frack Off and Brighton & Hove Energy 4

Services Company. Like the council, they are also working towards ‘One Planet’ sustainability principles, and they’re retrofitting the building to reduce its carbon footprint and energy bills. Hundreds of organisations use the centre for everything from a community meeting space to exercise classes, and office space to church worship. It’s great to see Brighthelm continuing to work with local residents to develop a new range of brilliant community facilities for local people.

octfocus Don’t get me wrong – I’ve loved those balmy summer evenings which lasted long enough to get the dog up on the downs or to sit outside with a glass of something winding down along with the day. But October heralds autumn colours and shorter days means longer evenings and a great excuse to head inside for a plethora of great events. Here’s a few to tempt you to join me. Kairen Kemp: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk

culture&events Uh-oh! Did someone say Christmas? Halloween hasn’t even arrived and it’s already rearing its drunken, tinsel-clad head. So, to distract yourself from the oncoming onslaught of wrapping paper, bills and ‘snow’, October is here to occupy you! As well as the comedy festival, this month also sees some high profile musical events including Jake Bugg and Lawson. Don’t get those stockings out just yet (whatever the TV is telling you!). Andrew Kilpatrick: culture@whatsonguide.co.uk

Comedy Festival Fri 4th – Sun 20th, Various Venues This month Brighton is acting as a magnet for comedic talent, attracting the likes of Russell Kane, Lee Nelson, Alexei Sayle, Stewart Lee, Sean Lock, Jason Manford, Seann Walsh … well you get the picture. With a gala on the 4th hosted by Alan Carr and tons of acts throughout the event, it’s time to give that funny bone a workout! brightoncomedyfestival.com

Jimmy Carr Tue 8th, Brighton Dome Jimmy Carr’s one-liners have earned him a reputation and his pay-offs can be morally questionable. Rapidly becoming the toast of the nation, he earns his bread poking fun at those less fortunate; you might expect him to sprinkle the crumbs more liberally. That’s why we’re glad he’s sharing the wealth by touring again! So get a ticket! How taxing can it really be? brightondome.org

Mess Wed 9th, The Old Market Winner of the 2012 Stage Award for Best Ensemble and nominated for a 2013 Off West-End Theatre Award for Best New Play, this astonishing production based on anorexia has been critically revered. Presented as part of World Mental Health Day, this play, which has been described by Time Out to be “perilously close to genius”, should excite and enthral all who witness it. theoldmarket.com 10

food Having not been abroad for a while, I am going to Greece for an end of summer gastrothon. Preparing for this, I have been eating nothing but chicken and broccoli as I plan to indulge in as much of the local produce as my metabolism will allow. Greek food is simple, but delicious and a lot depends on the quality of the ingredients. Greco [Preston Street] serves some of the best Greek food in Brighton and is worth a visit. Whatever their age or ability it’s good for kids to have outside school interests. Don’t forget the tinies. filmclub Once again there’s loads of choice in the cinema no matter what age you are. Irvine Welch’s ‘Filth’ (4th) finally hits the screen starring James McAvoy, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (11th) gets yet another treatment, Johnny Knoxville and the boys are back in ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’ (23rd), there’s legendary soul in the documentary ‘Muscle Shoals’ and the machine cranks up again in ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’ (25th). Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Siberian Education 9th, On DVD

Based on the novel of the same name, a loose interpretation of Russian Nicolai Lillin’s biography, ‘Siberian Education’ tells the story of a group of friends growing up in a community of banished criminals in a forgotten corner of the Soviet Union. Whilst this is a harsh environment and danger lurks around every corner, Oscar winning Italian director Gabriele (‘Mediterraneo’) Salvatores instead chooses to focus on the relationship between the characters rather than lingering on the prevailing violence and creates a very engaging coming of age film that effectively flashes between 1985 and 1995. John Malkovich is the star draw here and seems right at home in his role of the head of the clan but the young cast members also acquit themselves admirably with Eleanor Tomlinson especially shining as Xenia, a child trapped in a woman’s body. Some performances leave a little to be desired and the location has

22

what’sonoct13

been criticised for being slightly stereotypical but the leads are all thoroughly convincing, which is all the more impressive as many of them are new to the screen. As a tale of honour amongst thieves and family values, ‘Siberian Education’ delivers a refreshing change from the American gangster films of the last few years, is surprisingly moving and well worth two hours of your time.

11th, In Cinemas When Robert Rodriguez turned his spoof Grindhouse trailer into a fully fledged movie in 2010 who would have thought that it would spawn a sequel? Danny Trejo returns as the murderous Mexican alongside Jessica Alba. Mel Gibson, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr and Charlie Sheen will ensure that this is just as much blood spattered, over the top fun as the first one.

Escape Plan 22nd, In Cinemas This is a film that will have you throwing your hat in the air or burying your head in your hands in despair as two heavyweights of the eighties, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzeneggar, team up for this prison break caper. Throw 50 Cent, Vinnie Jones, Jim Caviezal and Sam Neill into the mix and this looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Ender’s Game 25th, In Cinemas This adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Orson Scott Card (who also co writes the screenplay) sees Harrison Ford’s long awaited return to the stars. Asa (‘Hugo’) Butterfield plays Ender, an unusually gifted child who is sent to a military academy to prepare for a future alien invasion. Alongside Ford as Colonel Graff, Ben Kingsley appears as Ender’s trainer and former war hero, Mazer Rackham.

Thor: The Dark World 30th, In Cinemas Director Kenneth Branagh did such a great job in bringing Marvel’s God of Thunder to the screen that it’s a shame that he’s not returning but with Alan (‘Game of Thrones’) Taylor taking over I feel that we’re in safe hands. Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Stellan Skarsgard all return to do battle with Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith.

barlife It’s that time of year again – yes, fresh-faced idealists swan to the coast to become the world’s top something or others, and usually leave with a big debt and bags under their eyes; but that means they’ve probably enjoyed everything that’s on offer to them. Here’s a few of the best places for students to explore as the nights draw in and they make new friends and break new hearts. Tom Doyle: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

North Laine 27 Gloucester Place, 01273 683666 A venue that gets people talking is one you want to be at, and where better than North Laine? Get your lederhosen on as it’s the combination of the venue’s first birthday and Oktoberfest on the weekend of the 4th. Sausages, beer and live music – bliss! Your liver may be screaming at lectures on Monday, but don’t say we didn’t warn you. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/north-laine

Revolution Brighton 77 West Street, 01273 806090 Now West Street isn’t usually somewhere that students find themselves at weekends seeing as the masses swamp it, but Revolution Brighton is a sophisticated way to sample the nightlife of the town after a day of cramming. Chic Beat offers entry on Thursdays for £3 with an NUS before 12, so you can enjoy top drinks and afford the bus back home. revolution-bars.co.uk/brighton

Royal Sovereign 66 Preston Street, 01273 323289 A beer garden, dog-friendly, good drinks deals and lovely grub – what more could you possibly want when deciding where to spend your loan? An NUS card will take you places on a Tuesday night with a host of drinks for around £2, while you can fill that expanding void in your belly with stone-baked pizzas or other forms of fine bar food. theroyalsovereign.com 26

123 Lewes Road, 01273 620888 Located conveniently close to where many students end up living in their second years, ‘The Big Yellow Pub’ is the perfect place to meet for food, drink, music and general hilarity. There’s a great quiz night every Tuesday at 8:30, and with top student offers like £9.95 for a bottle of wine or £10 for four Jagerbombs, you know what to do. thegladstonebrighton.com

Fitzherberts 25-26 New Road, 01273 682401 Nestled snugly in a prime location close to the town centre and Pavilion Gardens (next to the Mash Tun), Fitzherberts gives you a taste of everything you need. Live music ensures it gets rowdy and the drinking area outside is perfect for people-watching, so if you’re feeling a little lonely in the early days of your course, make some new friends at your leisure.

Fiddlers Elbow 11 Boyce’s Street, 01273 325850 If a heaving Irish bar that is said to have the best Guinness in town is your kind of thing, then look no further than the Fiddler’s Elbow. This pub has a great feel to it, and you may not be leaving before closing at 3am on weekends. There’s good bands, sports on the TVs, and fine affordable food for tight budgets. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/fiddlers-elbow

Coalition 171-181 Kings Rd Arches, 01273 722385 Coalition is one of the perfect ways to be introduced to Brighton nightlife – it’s big enough for a proper night out, it’s by the sea, with the latest and greatest music on. Friday I’m In Love (named after nearly locals The Cure) is a great night with top DJs on (you’ve guessed it) Fridays, and students get in for £3 before 12:30. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/coalition

livemusic The nights are creeping in and it’s getting mighty cool on our fair shore in the evenings, so there’s only one thing for it – cosy up to your fellow music lovers in a cramped, sweaty venue and enjoy some of the best music autumn can throw at you. There’s feathered fiends, filthy young upstarts, ethereal Danes, and brutally honest British rap. So wrap up warm and enjoy at your leisure. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Drenge Wed 9th, Green Door Store Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you’ll have heard of Drenge this summer. The Loveless brothers have distilled rock’n’roll to its essence, and we’re left with a bathtub of moonshine & mayhem. No Age Mon 14th, Sticky Mike’s The reason why it’s so hard to pin down No Age is because they’re so bloody good at what they do. They’ve played on the Letterman show and played in basements – a true crossover band. noagela.org

Mon 21st, Coalition The indie-pop songstress has many strings to her bow – she writes, produces and also models, as well as throwing out great tracks – all before 30 years of age. L.O.V.E is the kind of infectious 60s’ track to get a room bouncing, but new song Samson is a little more intriguing, with pounding synths complement her fine, fraught vocals for something more akin to Florence. vvbrown.com

Jagwar Ma Tues 22nd, The Haunt Only formed last year the feline duo wowed everybody and their mother with brilliant laid-back single Come Save Me – it’s unsurprising that duo Gabriel Winterfield and Jono Ma hail from Sydney then, as it sounds like the surf grinding on Bondi Beach while an electro sun looks on approvingly. If you’re a fan of 1960s vibes with a modern twist, get on this. facebook: JagwarMa

Efterklang Mon 28th, The Old Market Dubbed by some as “the Danish Sigur Ros”, the trio’s beautiful songs carry shades of the Icelandic giants as well as Radiohead’s more introspective leanings. The name translates as ‘Rememberance’; once you’ve seen them live, there’s no way you’ll be forgetting them. efterklang.net/home

Erol Alkan Sat 5th, Audio The hugely popular Warehouse night is still going strong , bringing you the best DJs that dance music has to offer and all for free. This is, without doubt, one of the largest shows that they have ever put on as they welcome back the legend that is Erol Alkan. Early arrival is essential for this one as he always brings the house down. audiobrighton.com

Asian Dub Foundation Sat 5th, Concorde 2 The rebirth of Asian Dub Foundation started in March 2012, when the band was invited to do a live soundtrack for the screening of notorious French film La Haine. With a fantastic spirit around the events it seemed natural that this should be the start of creating new material and Dr Das, Rocky Singh and the band are still on classic form. asiandubfoundation.com 40
