ourcity Residents, community groups and campaigners came together recently to celebrate the launch of the new Lewes Road scheme. Before the changes, the majority of those using the road were travelling by bus, bike or foot. However the road didn’t help these thousands of residents travel smoothly, and in many cases not very safely either. Many city businesses and organisations are on this vital route, including our football club and two universities. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Lewes Road Development Many of these organisations are growing. The only real way they can get growing numbers of staff, visitors, students and fans up and down the Lewes Road is by sustainable transport. So we’ve just finished part of a scheme to help the majority who travel on the Lewes Road by bus, bike or on foot get about quicker and more safely. The majority of the cost of the scheme was awarded to us from the government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, which is aimed at creating growth and reducing carbon emissions. While there will be some initial disruption, now that much of the scheme is in place, the

better reliability of buses and increased safety of other modes of transport will mean that more residents will be able to choose them to get to work, school or town rather than car. This will reduce congestion and improve air quality on the road. The scheme is similar to the one introduced on the A259 coastal road a few years ago, which has seen a reduction in general traffic of around 10%, and an increase in bus patronage of approximately 25%. The Lewes Road is one of the major schemes that will make our streets safer for everyone, and help our city continue to grow for years to come.

futureevents

futureevents It’s always a bit nerve-wracking being the new girl: hello, that’s me. I’ve been briefed with the task of looking into the future for no other purpose than to facilitate your entertainment needs. Lucky for me, all newcomers to What’s On get issued with a crystal ball. Trouble is, it turns out there’s so much happening; where to begin? For starters, how about these beauties to see you through winter… Plum Woodard: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Adrian Edmondson & The Bad Shepherds Sun 1st Dec, Concorde 2 While punk, folk and comedy might not be an obvious of mixture, The Bad Shepherds – nominees for Best Live Act, 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - make it work. Touring their third album, Mud, Blood & Beer, featuring covers of classic numbers such as ‘Our House’ and ‘Going Underground’, it’s a guaranteed howl of a night out. concorde2.co.uk

Dr. Phil Hammond Fri 13th Dec, Ropetackle Arts Centre Practising GP, Dr. Phil Hammond, brings his medically themed comedy to Shoreham. The show promises to leave audiences with new skills as well as perspectives (not to mention a few more laughter lines): how to sing your symptoms, diagnose your doctor, arm wrestle for drugs, get past the bearded receptionist and get out of the NHS alive. Imperative participation, we say. ropetacklecentre.co.uk

Peaches

Sat 14th Dec, Corn Exchange Since exploding onto the scene in 2000 and ripping up a few mainstream conventions and outmoded taboos, the queen of subversion and awesome spectacle, Peaches, continues to push boundaries with a double whammy performance this winter. Her directorial debut and semi-fictional biopic, Peaches Does Herself, is followed by an MC/DJ Extravaganza. You’ll need separate tickets for each event, but frankly, this will be amazing. brightondome.org 6

The Lettings market is beginning to slow as we near the end of the year, anyone progressing a Buy to Let purchase should either try and push to complete before December or delay until after mid-January to ensure it is available to let when there are decent levels of applicants. Any Landlords who register their own deposits should look up the Superstrike vs Rodrigues case as it has thrown up a lot of surprises for Tenancies that existed before registration was required in April 2007 and also Periodic Tenancies. You have been warned! www.psandb.co.uk

Kurt Vile Sun 17th Dec, Concorde 2 Is it fair to couch Vile’s album, Wakin On A Pretty Daze, as one of the soundtracks to 2013? It sure was a bit of a summer theme; melancholic, weighty but good and drunkenly dreamy too. Matador Records’ Philadelphian indie-rocker comes to Brighton mid-winter perhaps to inject a little bit of summer nostalgia back into fans. Tickets won’t hang about long - go! concorde2.co.uk

Bootleg Beatles Fri 20th Dec, Brighton Centre Love, love, love The Beatles? In absence of the real thing, what about the Bootleg Beatles, the longest running Beatles tribute band (if not the longest running tribute band period) as an alternative to panto? With a little help from their attendant orchestra, enjoy the hits and even songs The Beatles themselves never performed live. They’ll have the most cynical of musos converted. brightoncentre.co.uk

Pinocchio

Sun 28th Dec – 2nd Jan 2014, The Old Market Scamp Theatre and Indefinite Article grace Brighton with their magical rendition of Pinocchio. Previously performed at The National Theatre and Lyric Hammersmith, it’s a brilliant post-Christmas afternoon option for the kids and one all the family will enjoy. Puppetry and illusions all set to original music, this highly commended play will keep the seasonal magic stretching that lovely little bit longer. theoldmarket.com

The name? Luscome quotes Peter Cook in his best Derek & Clive voice: “You’re in that group, int ya? Custard, innit..?” Fabulous. concorde2.co.uk

Fight Club Sat 16th, Duke of Yorks Followed by a Q&A with Author Chuck Palahniuk When ‘Fight Club’ burst onto the scene back in 1999 who knew that Brad Pitt’s speech outlining the rules of the eponymous society would become one of the most iconic in the history of modern cinema and that David Fincher would become the much celebrated and award winning director that he is today. For those of you who haven’t seen it, ‘Fight Club’ tells the tale of an insomniac office worker (Edward Norton) who falls in with a devil-may-care soap maker (Pitt). Together they form an underground fight club that evolves into much more and features, debatably, the finest performances that Pitt and Norton have delivered in one of Fincher’s best films. For those who have seen it it’s worth checking out this presentation as it is being shown as it was meant to be seen – glorious 35mm film. The screening is followed by an hour and a half Q&A and reading with acclaimed author Chuck Palahniuk on a variety of topics including his

new novel ‘Doomed’. Palahniuk is one of America’s greatest contemporary writers, known for creating works of transgressive fiction with heavy doses of satire and self-destructive aggressiveness in the central characters. He is the author of twelve best-selling novels, including ‘Fight Club’, ‘Choke’, ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Damned.’ Both the film and book have gone on to become a modern cult favourite, further cementing Palahniuk’s reputation as one of the greatest writers of our time.

Milius

filmclub

1st, In Cinemas Legendary director and screenwriter John Milius has been involved with some of the greatest movie moments in history including ‘Jaws’, ‘Dirty Harry’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’. This documentary focuses on the big personality that lead to his obscurity and features contributions from a host of stars including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Oliver Stone, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert Zemeckis, Harrison Ford and Milius himself.

Gravity 8th, In Cinemas Alfonso Cuaron, who brought us ‘Children of Men’, directs and cowrites this drama about a medical engineer and an astronaut fighting to stay alive after they are accidentally set adrift in space. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock star alongside Ed Harris and, judging by the spectacular visuals in the nail biting trailers, it will have to be viewed on the big screen for the full impact.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire 21st, In Cinemas The first film only came out last year and was such a hit that the studio wasted no time in green lighting a sequel. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are back as the victorious competitors alongside Woody Harrelson and Stanley Tucci. This time they’re joined by Philip Seymour Hoffman but let’s hope the rushed production doesn’t make for an inferior film.

Carrie 29th, In Cinemas Brian De Palma’s 1976 take on the Stephen King novel is still heralded by critics as a classic in the horror genre so what can director Kimberly Pierce possibly bring to the table nearly forty years later? Hit-girl herself, Chloe Grace Moretz, stars as the telekinetic misfit and Julianne Moore is her bible bashing monster of a mother so this looks like it’s one to watch.

barlife We all know the feeling – you’ve been caught in whatever awfulness the sky can throw at you, your shoes are sodden, and you want to cry. Don’t worry, you can admit it – it’s happened to me. But before you hightail it home, why not grab a cosy chair, order a glass of something tasty to drink and settle down beside a roaring fire in one of the following fine establishments? Tom Doyle: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

Coach House 59 Middle Street, 01273 719000 This venue has a bit of everything – there’s a good restaurant for your typical Brighton food fodder, a great bar, and the flames well and truly lick any wounded spirits with the open fire during winter months. So if it’s food, fire, and fire in your belly you’re after, Coach House is a safe bet for your own winter wonderland. coachhousebrighton.com

Royal Sovereign 66 Preston Street, 01273 323289 With a fine food menu including in-house pizzas and fantastic roast dinners, there are definitely worse places to get stuck than the Royal Sovereign. The pub has recently closed for refurbishment, but fear not – the establishment should be back open in early November ready to toast your tired tootsies while the world rains down around you on another winters’ day in Brighton. theroyalsovereign.com

Fountain Head 102 North Road, 01273 628091 If I could turn back time… I’d make the majority of pubs like the Fountain Head. Lovely wooden floors, classic brickwork, chalkboards with specials and not just one, but two open fires to sit by while you sip along to tales gone by – that’s got to be the dream, hasn’t it? Whatever your professional situation or bank balance, there’s something for everybody here. drinkinbrighton.co.uk 22

11 Cranbourne Street, 01273 725656 After a heavy day of shopping/ window shopping/mooching about, what better way to relax than by nursing a drink in front of the fire in a prime central location? Perfect for a stop-off before more drinks in town or a treat before a quiet night in, the Western Front is the perfect prelude – either that or buckle up and settle in for the evening. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

Connaught Pub & Kitchen 48 Hove Street, 01273 206578 Describing themselves as a “proper pub”, the owners over at the Connaught Pub and Kitchen know what they’re doing. There’s plenty of seasonal produce and with a menu likely to vary from day-to-day, you’re never likely to get a predictable meal. With a roaring fire to spice things up, this could soon become your go-to winter hideaway. Enjoy responsibly and often. connaughtpub.co.uk

Open House 146 Springfield Road, 01273 880102 Only a short walk away from London Road Station, the Open House is a busy little establishment – and for good reason. A child-friendly pub during the day and with top music and comedy acts during the evening, you’ll want to settle yourself beside some glowing embers as you work your way through a day’s entertainment. Not to be missed at any rate. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

The Prestonville Arms 64 Hamilton Road, 01273 701007 The Prestonville Arms may feel like it’s another world, but it’s only a 10-minute walk from Brighton station for those of you of a wandering disposition. livemusic It’s said that this will be one of the coldest winters in living memory in the UK – and depending on how your day’s going, you’ll either be chortling in unseasonable heat or glumly nodding in agreement. But whatever the meteorological mirth, set yourself right with some top musical picks this month. There’s Glaswegian Texans, Tennessee heartbreakers, passionate poets, post-rock swells and ska classics – more than enough to keep you going. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Torres Thurs 14th, Green Door Store No, the £50 million Chelsea striker hasn’t decided to throw in the towel and become a rock star -Torres is the stage name of Mackenzie Scott, an absurdly talented singer-songwriter from the US of A. She’s got a power and control of her voice that few artists achieve live, and tracks to soon rival the best of the blues. Back of the net. torrestorrestorres.bandcamp.com

Hidden Orchestra Sat 16th, The Haunt Electronic jazz fusion, you say? Most people would shudder at these very words, but Hidden Orchestra create some of the freshest sounds you will be hearing anywhere – that’s a fact. The Edinburgh quartet mix in elements of rock, pop, hip-hop and whatever else springs to mind to create a truly eclectic sound that has to be seen to be believed. Don’t miss out. hiddenorchestra.com

Sigur Ros Wed 20th, Brighton Centre If you’ve ever seen a slo-mo montage of sporting excellence on the TV chances are you’ll have heard one or two Sigur Ros songs without even knowing it. That’s no dig at the Iceland giants of post-rock though – they make beautiful songs of pure escape that extract the tears from you mercilessly. Jonsi’s voice grabs you, the rest keeps you rapt in awe. sigur-ros.co.uk/kveikur 28

clublife It’s getting colder and the nights are drawing in but there’s plenty on this month to work you up into a sweat. There are plenty of people out and about so get out there and join them in exploring the fantastic club nights that only a city like Brighton can provide. I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed with what you will find and will return in the coming months. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Funkyfish Marine Parade The Funkyfish is the longest running nightclub in the city, where you will hear the hottest tunes from the 70s to the 00s with some ‘now’ thrown in. DJs play the best of Funk, Disco, Dance, Pop and Club Classics. Unlike other clubs Funkyfish concentrates on the 3 things you need for a good night out, 1. Great People 2. Great Music 3. Great Customer Service. funkyfishclub.co.uk

RUN BTN Mondays, Life RUN BTN’s speciality is a selection of 80s’ Oldskool, 90s’ Hip Hop, Classic Garage and Funky House, all finely mixed and chopped. This one’s definitely for those of you who like a hefty serving of bass to accompany your night out. With ridiculously low drink prices even those of you who have already spent the majority of your loans should be able to afford this. lifebrighton.com

Deviant Rocky Horror Halloween Sat 2nd, Belushi’s Below With Halloween falling midweek plenty of nights are adopting the theme this weekend. Deviant, the popular monthly rock and alternative night, are calling on all you sweet transvestites to get your glad rags on and join them to do the Time Warp. Dub Pistols Fri 15th, Concorde 2 The procession of guest vocalists who’ve joined the Dub Pistols in the intervening decade or so reads like a roll call of urban legends. New album ‘White Lines’ is more of a party album and also has its fair share of top-notch guests. Led by legendary party monster Barry Ashworth this is guaranteed to be a night you will not want to miss. dubpistolsmusic.co.uk
