ourcity A quarter of the UK’s Living Wage employers are in Brighton & Hove. Campaigners in Brighton & Hove have been arguing for the living wage for many years. The Living Wage is a rate of pay that means people are able to live where they work. The rate is set by the Living Wage Foundation, who examines the costs of living such as rent, energy and food. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George
The Living Wage We immediately introduced the living wage for council staff as soon as we were elected, and setting up a Living Wage Commission to look at how a living wage might be adopted across the city. The Chamber of Commerce has since led on the campaign on behalf of the council, and now over a hundred employers in the city have voluntarily signed up to pay their staff at least £7.45 an hour. These include businesses large and small as well as public and community organisations. This great success of the Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign is the only business-led one in the country, a real testament to our successful joint work with businesses in the city. The reality is that we all bear the costs of low wages, since the government effectively subsidises them through the welfare system.
Where people aren’t paid enough to live, benefits like housing benefit help them make ends meet. Recent research found that every worker who is paid the living wage saves the government an average of £232 in benefits and raises an extra £445 in income tax. But it’s good for business too, as staff members are more likely to stay at an organisation, work better, and morale is higher. By opting into paying a living wage, local employers are showing that it’s possible to tackle inequality despite difficult economic hardship. Together we are sending a clear message that everyone should earn enough to cover the cost of living. More information on the Brighton & Hove Living Wage campaign can be found here: livingwagebrighton.co.uk Photo: Simon Callaghan

Following an average October the market has really picked up in November, especially at the low end where properties are going within days and often for more than the asking price. Since the ‘Credit Crunch’ we have had two unusually busy Decembers so it is entirely possible we will have another one this year. 2014 looks like it will be a steady year for both Lettings and Sales as there are more mortgages available, especially for first time buyers. We are now on Zoopla, Primelocation and Rightmove which covers nearly 100% of the property portals and along with our Queens Road location the coverage your property will obtain is hard to beat. www.psandb.co.uk

filmclub As we say hello to another year there is plenty to look forward to at your local cinema. It looks like 2014 will be the year of the sequel as Captain America, X Men, Spider-Man, Planet of the Apes, Rio, Transformers, 300, the Muppets, Fast & Furious, the Inbetweeners, the Expendables, Sin City, the Hunger Games, Night at the Museum and How to Train Your Dragon all get further instalments. Big Bad Wolves Dec, In Cinemas If you’re looking for lashings of light Christmas fun or a New Year feel good film then you’ll probably want to steer well clear of this. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a pitch black comedy horror thriller with a dash of torture porn then this is the film for you. A series of brutal child murders bring together the father of the latest victim, a vigilante detective and the main suspect, a religious studies teacher, who was arrested and released because of a police blunder. Israeli writer/directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado released Israel’s very first horror film ‘Rabies’ as their debut in 2011 and have followed it up with a masterfully crafted piece that works on every level. This is a film that is funny, thrilling and horrific in equal measures and surprisingly, given the extremely unpleasant subject matter, manages to enthral and entertain for its full running time due to a brilliant script and intuitive casting. Undoubtedly

Hollywood will be eying this up for an English language remake which, in the wrong hands, could wind up being extremely tasteless and gratuitous but Quentin Tarantino has stated that ‘Big Bad Wolves’ is his favourite film of the year so here’s hoping he has this in his sights, as it has a lot in common with some of his greatest moments. I am also inclined to wholeheartedly agree with him and eagerly await Keshales and Papushado’s next offering.

13th Dec, In Cinemas Peter Jackson’s second instalment of the Tolkein classic is the big Christmas movie for young and old alike. Whilst I found the first episode sluggish and taking a while to get going this should hit the ground running. With the introduction of some characters from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy and Benedict Cumberbatch as the dragon, this should enthral.
The Wolf of Wall Street 17th Jan, In Cinemas Once again director Martin Scorsese teams up with Leonardo DiCaprio for this tale of greed and corruption based on the true story of stockbroker Jordan Belfort who was jailed for twenty months for defrauding investors in a scheme that involved widespread corruption on Wall Street and in the corporate banking world. The intriguing cast also includes Matthew McConaughey and Joanna Lumley.
I, Frankenstein 24th Jan, In Cinemas It’s quite refreshing to see a fantasy film that is not based on a comic so hats off to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ writer Stuart Beattie for helming this. Aaron Eckhart stars as the creature caught up in a centuries old war between two immortal clans. If you’ve seen the trailer you won’t be surprised that one of the writers was responsible for ‘Underworld’.
The Book Thief 31st Jan, In Cinemas This is based on the best-selling book of the same name and tells the story of a spirited young girl who is sent to live with a family in World War Two Germany. ‘Downton Abbey’ director Brian Percival brings this to the screen with a relative newcomer, Sophie Nelisse, as Liesel. The involvement of Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson guarantee a quality adaptation.

fun4kids We say that Christmas is all about the kids but it’s not all about presents. Take the children to see performances and exhibitions as well as, take part in a variety of events in the community. It is a magical time and I’m delighted to champion one organisation that provides adventures for those who don’t have a lot of magic in their lives. Let’s all ‘give back’ a little. Justin Williams: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk
Adventure Unlimited Our Choice Programme Various Locations AU are ‘giving back’ by running free activity events like archery and climbing inside and out. Designed by and for 10-18 year olds in care those not living with parents or those under local supervisory orders. This includes young people living with other relatives, friends, in foster or other local authority care, in hostel accommodation and homeless young people. aultd.org
Herlock Bones & The Case Of The Prized Christmas Pudding Sun 22nd Dec, The Brunswick Fabulous, fun filled, silly sing-along pantomime for the kids and grownups alike. To 4th Jan14, Emporium Theatre Emporium are bringing panto back to Brighton with this magical re-telling of the classic fairytale. With colourful characters, thrilling theatrical effects and sumptuous costumes it’s the perfect escape from the winter weather for all the family. Panto must have slapstick silliness, a damsel in distress rescued by her dashing Prince and a truly wicked, boo-able villainess, and Cinders has these by the glittery bucketful! emporiumbrighton.com 18

Burning The Clocks, Fri 21st Dec, Madeira Drive Billed as the antithesis of a commercial Christmas period, Burn the Clocks is an eccentric cry out to an imagined past culture, and a lot of fun. Revellers bring their homemade paper lanterns to burn on the communal pyre, bringing in the New Year and hailing the winter solstice, greeting the lengthening days. It also finishes with a big fireworks display! burningtheclocks.co.uk
The Nutcracker Sat 28 Dec, Brighton Dome I think that The Nutcracker is the ideal way to introduce children to the ballet. Heavenly and intensely magical it is taking a step alongside Clara into an enchanting adventure through the fantastical Land of Sweets. A festive treat for all ages includes the famous The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and The Waltz of the Snowflakes so take the whole family. brightondome.org
Who’s Been Sitting In My Chair? barlife It’s that time of year again – everybody’s rushing around wondering who’s going where and who’s kissing who at midnight. The festive season can be fraught with tension, but fear not – here are a few sure-fire hits to save you the bother of arguing with your friends and celebrating the new year and beyond in style. Just please don’t go out dressed like Borat or a stripper – you’ll catch your death. Tom Doyle: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk
The Mesmerist 1-3 Prince Albert Street, 01273 328542 A doff of the cap to all those who know of this wonderfully unconventional bar – for those that don’t, you’re in for a proper treat. Great music, late, late nights and a stylish clientele mean new friends and hazy memories. Brighton Blitz vs GI Jive on the big night promises 1940-50s classics to tap wartime toes to, so fall in line. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/mesmerist
Grand Central 29-30 Surrey Street, 01273 329086 Who doesn’t want to dress up as a kraken on New Years’ Eve? Raise your tentacles and say ‘Aargh’, as Grand Central are throwing in a pirate/ kraken party – and they’re offering tasty drink deals for anybody in fancy dress. So if rapscallions, beasties of the deep and spiced rum float your boat, walk off the plank into a new year with style. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/grand-central
Above Audio 10 Marine Parade, 01273 606906 Handily titled as it is indeed above Audio, this classy bar has a range of nights to suit your winter needs. The weekly Cotton Tail Club runs on New Years’ Eve with music from the 1920s-50s, while Schtumm offers two-for-one cocktails every Thursday in January to tide you over till payday. It’s got great wine, gorgeous food and, for a change, good music to go with it. OHSO Social 250 Kings Road Arches, 01273 746067 Fancy seeing in 2014 on Brighton beach? Of course you do. Two of Brighton’s top club nights – Sonic Safari and Tech-Noir – have gone all Batman and Superman on us by teaming up to throw the mother of all bashes. Earlybird tickets are £5, so nab them before you’re left with an awkward relative to pucker up to on the big night. ohsosocial.co.uk
The Old Market 11A Upper Market Street, 01273 201801 If the phrase ‘White Mink Electro Swing Speakeasy’ doesn’t ruffle your feathers then you have no business being involved on December 31st. With The Fat 45 and Coco Deville to see you into a new year of hopes and dreams, you can dance away in style while also expecting a few surprises – presumably of the electro swing speakeasy persuasion. theoldmarket.com
Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar 9-12 Middle Street, 01273 749465 It wouldn’t be a proper night at Sticky Mike’s without delving into the weird and wonderful now, would it? The Physics House Band will lead proceedings into strange places for the first moments of 2014, while there’s also the promise of psychedelic interactive art, which will make you feel like you’re tripping but without the dodgy day after. food Whatever the highlight of your festive feast is, some folk will be more concerned with what they are washing their dinner down with. I recommend putting Penderyn Madeira Single Malt on your gift list. It is a Welsh whiskey [yes, Welsh] aged in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Madeira casks. It is uniquely complex in a subtle way, and won the Best World Whiskey gold medal last year. Will Paton: will@whatsonguide.co.uk

livemusic With most people returning home to eat, get drunk, argue and fall asleep in all manner of chairs and sofas, the festive season can lead to a dearth of talent. But fear not, as the search is over – there are still top acts to be found over the next two months if you’re willing to brave the cold. Young to old, ethereal to emphatic, down that sherry and get merry. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
Palma Violets Wed 4th Dec, Concorde 2 It’s only natural to treat new bands promoted by NME with skepticism given the recent surplus of ‘landfill indie’, yet this London-based fourpiece have the songs to back up the hype. Hit ‘Best of Friends’ celebrates the confusion of love and friendship in youth with wit and warm, and there’s a classic ‘60s guitar vibe to their sound. Definitely worth your time. palmaviolets.co.uk
Wooden Shjips Mon 9th Dec, Audio If you like your garage rock with a little trance, oddness and dance thrown in, then look no further than this gloriously misspelt San Franciscan quartet. There’s wild hair and big bullish beards in tow and with buzz building around their distorted fuzz psychedelia, the lads are sure to get your legs jerking and the darkest reaches of your brain working. Highly recommended. woodenshjips.com
Fatboy Slim Sun 15th Dec, Digital Let’s face it – if you’re not familiar with Norman Cook’s dance floor alter ego, then you’re doing something wrong on this fair shoreline. With too many hits to list here and a worldwide following, the chance to see the legendary Brighton-based native in such an intimate setting for his ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat’ tour is simply unmissable – everybody do the Rockafeller Skank. fatboyslim.net 34

Mon 16th Dec, The Old Market There’s no better way to settle into the frosty nights than with a bewitching performance from the 30-year-old Londoner. With echoes of Bowie from his style and genre-hopping creativity, it’s worth seeing Wolf whatever he puts together. This time round he’ll be reworking current tracks with a seasonal twist and debuting those from his wanderings, so prepare for a festive feast. patrickwolf.com
Elkie Brooks Thurs 9th Jan, Theatre Royal Now for performer that needs no introduction, but here’s one anyway – as one of the UK’s top talents since the 1960s and with over 20 studio albums to her name, Elkie Brooks is a performer through and through. Beginning her musical days supporting The Beatles and achieving massive success in the 80s with album Pearls, go along and celebrate a 50-year career. elkiebrooks.com
Warpaint Thurs Jan 23rd, Brighton Dome With their second album ‘Warpaint’ due out in January, the LA all-girl fourpiece rockers are set for big things. Signed to Rough Trade and with fans including former Chili Pepper John Frusciante (who mixed their first EP), the band have been compared to the likes of the Cocteau Twins, and new single ‘Love Is To Die’ is a glorious grower of a song. warpaintwarpaint.com
Connan Mockasin Sat 25th Jan, The Haunt After turning down big-money deals at the start of his career, you get the sense Mockasin (or Connan Tant Hosford to his mum) does things his own way. The New Zealander recorded his new album ‘Caramel’ in a Tokyo hotel room, and wants to try everything from film scores to stand-up comedy – catch him before he shifts from psych-pop to pastures new. facebook: connanmockasin

clublife There’s a good chance that, whenever you happen to be reading this, you would have been to a club night that you’ve enjoyed over the last few weeks. It’s easy to forget that most of these nights are frequent events and without you supporting them they just cannot continue. So if you love a particular night make sure that you support it and drag friends along to the next one. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk
Donuts Every Tuesday, Green Door Store Hip Hop has long been a popular genre amongst Brighton clubbers but there hasn’t seemed to be a club night that celebrates the diversity with the celebration that it deserves. Donuts fix that with a weekly dose of classics alongside 90s’ pop hits and the odd banger thrown in for good measure. There are also free doughnuts occasionally so get yourselves down there. facebook: DonutsBrighton

Sat 23rd Dec, Concorde 2 For over thirty years David Rodigan has been top dog in the bass heavy atmosphere of Britain’s reggae dance-halls. The key to his success has been an unsinkable passion for reggae, which first took hold of him when he heard ska music in the early ’sixties. He developed an obsession with the music of Jamaica and has an encyclopedic knowledge of reggae. rodigan.com
Pump Up the Jam – NYE Tues 31st Dec, Coalition The fact that Pump up the Jam has been the first club night in Brighton on New Year’s Eve to sell out in advance for the last two years says a lot about the quality of the event. Expect a fun filled night of nineties dance, House, Garage, Jungle, Hip Hop and Pop with a few special treats thrown in. coalitionbrighton.com
The Garden House Party Tues 31st Dec, The Brunswick Croatia’s Garden Festival makes its annual jaunt across Europe to round off a brilliant 2013, celebrating New Year’s Eve once more in Brighton. Perennial house and disco Garden faves Crazy P headline and are joined by The Unabombers, curators of the outstanding odyssey Electric Elephant. The venue will be decorated like a house including sofas and ducks on the walls. thebrunswick.net
Whiskey Preachin’ Fri 10th Jan, Great Eastern DJs Shamblin Sexton and Senor Mick, evangelists of rock’n’roll saving Brighton’s soul one record at a time, crawl out of the swamp and crack open another crate of Whiskey Preachin’. They’ll be playing Gumbo Rock, Cosmic Boogie, Truck Stop Pop and some serious Blues in a bar which has one of the best selections of American bourbon and rye in the South. viewbrighton.co.uk
