ourcity Thirty five local businesses have already pledged their support to the Brighton & Hove Living Wage campaign so far this year, with many more in the process of signing up. A ‘living wage’ is a level of pay enough for workers to provide for themselves and their families. In many places around the country, including Brighton & Hove, the national minimum wage just isn’t enough to match the cost of living. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Living Wage There are so many families struggling to make ends meet on low salaries. This problem is only going to increase as the government’s welfare changes bite. Since we launched a citywide Living Wage Commission in 2011, much has been done to explore the benefits, risks and opportunities of adopting a local living wage. The commission was overseen by the Chair of the Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce and other members included representatives from the city’s Hotel Association, Brighton & Hove Albion, and the national Living Wage Foundation. They agreed that a voluntary target of £7.20 an hour was right for Brighton & Hove, in line with the rest of the country outside of London. This figure has since been revised by the national Living Wage Foundation to £7.45 an hour. It’s well-documented that as well as lifting some employees out of poverty and reducing the welfare bill, a living wage 4

what’sonmay13

means staff members are more likely to stay in their jobs, have higher attendance and be more productive at work. Of course not all businesses are in a position to give their lowestpaid employees a pay rise. Yet if local residents have more cash in their pockets to spend locally, then more local businesses will prosper bringing the clear benefits of a living wage full circle. The Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign is being run by the local Chamber of Commerce and the Council. To find out more, go to www.livingwagebrighton.co.uk

filmclub With blockbuster season comes the inevitable invasion of the sequels. This month we are treated to both ‘Fast And Furious 6’ (17th) and ‘The Hangover Part III’ (24th). If you fancy something a bit more original then ‘Dead Man Down’ (3rd), from the director who brought us the original ‘ The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ and starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace looks like a decent high octane thriller. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Lore 27th On DVD & Blu Ray It is the end of World War Two and the Allied forces are sweeping across Germany, carving it up into variously controlled sectors. Lore (Saskia Rosendahl) is the daughter of an SS officer. When her father leaves and her mother turns herself over to the Americans, she is forced to take her younger siblings on a journey across a confused, war torn and lawless country in order to reach the safety of their relatives in Hamburg. Along the way they meet a mysterious refugee (Kai Malina) and have to depend on a person that they have always been taught to hate. This award winning AustralianGerman co-production was

the official Australian entry in the Best Foreign Film category of the 2013 Academy Awards and is a thought provoking and beautifully shot piece of cinema featuring some stunning performances, especially from the two leads. It realistically portrays the desperation of a broken country forced to accept some harsh truths about their former leaders and the things that everyday people are willing to do just to survive. Writer/ director Cate Shortland should be commended for making an extremely compelling and sensitive coming of age tale from a very unusual and rarely seen perspective.

Star Trek Into Darkness

9th In Cinemas Director JJ Abrams this time takes us where no Star Trek movie has gone before – into 3D. The perfectly cast regulars of the USS Enterprise return and find themselves face to face with terrorist Benedict ‘Sherlock’ Cumberbatch. There is much speculation about the identity of his character and whether it is Khan from the original TV series but Abrams is giving nothing away.

The Great Gatsby 16th In Cinemas In his first big screen outing since ‘Australia’, director Baz Luhrmann has set his sights on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel set in the roaring twenties. The 1974 Robert Redford vehicle is considered a classic so it will be interesting to see whether Leonardo DiCaprio can fill the great man’s shoes. The director’s stylish flourish, alongside a cast including Tobey Maguire should assuage any fears.

Epic 22nd In Cinemas From the studio that brought you ‘Ice Age’ and ‘Rio’ comes an animated tale of a teenager transported to a deep forest and caught in the middle of a battle between good and evil. The voice cast bizarrely mixes up Colin Farrell, Beyonce Knowles, Christoph Waltz and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler but Oscar winning director Chris Wedge has helmed enough by now to know what he’s doing.

Byzantium 30th In Cinemas This is director Neil Jordan’s first foray into fang banging since 1994’s ‘Interview With The Vampire’ so you can guarantee an unusual and very stylish take on a well worn genre. Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan play two mysterious women who seek shelter in a coastal town resort. Writer Moira Buffini also scripted the highly enjoyable ‘Tamara Drewe’ so looks like it’s definitely worth a watch.

Bastille Thurs 16th, Brighton Dome The London quartet are currently on a meteoric rise following everyone in the country with a throat and a mouth belting out the choral intro refrain to single ‘Pompeii’. An impressive piano player, Odell shows wide influences – from the introspective ‘Another Love’ to the Arcade Fire-esque melodic chaos of ‘Hold Me’, he’s got enough imagination to keep a diverse TGE audience excited. clublife In these days of economic doom and gloom it’s always a pleasure to still be writing about a club night four years later. Spellbound (Sat 11th, Komedia), the 80s night for people who hate 80s nights, has gone from strength to strength and retained everything that originally made it such a great night out. The music is excellent and the crowd is still a mixture of very friendly characters. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Electric Playboys All Dayer Sat 4th, The Hobgoblin After the success of their Featurecast and Slamboree club gigs, the Electric Playboys are back with their first bank holiday party of the year. With top burgers provided by the Trolls Pantry and a real ale festival, the Playboys will be playing the party sounds on two rigs provided by Subrunner. Entry’s free and there is a fancy dress theme too. hobgoblinbrighton.co.uk

Twisted Burlesque Sun 5th, Ouch Bar This is a night that will showcase of some of the most amazing burlesque talent and performance artists Brighton has to offer with a dark and sinister twist to spice things up. Expect to be shocked, hot under the collar and transported through the sultry world of Burlesque gone bad. DJs Tapes and Peter Von Sleaze will be providing dark and sexy tunes. ouchbar.com

Daddy G Sun 5th, Concorde 2 Grant Marshall aka Daddy G was one of the founding members of Bristol’s Wild Bunch Sound System from which emerged Massive Attack. There are DJs that get their kicks from playing obscure white labels and those who simply enjoy playing their favourite records. Daddy G is definitely in the latter camp. You can also expect an eclectic mix from Portishead DJ Andy Smith. concorde2.co.uk 44
