Ami’s Review
I’m going to tell you about a beautiful novel... perhaps the most beautiful story I’ve ever read. It’s partly a coming of age story, partly a lesson in art and Vermeer, partly a window into upstairs/ downstairs life, and partly a love story. On the whole its amazing, and it’s called Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier.
The year is 1664, and sixteen year old Griet is called to work as a servant in the home of the painter Vermeer, and his wife Catharina. Griet is quickly assigned the task of cleaning her master’s art room because of her unusual eye for detail. Vermeer is particular about his room and his possessions, and she naturally understands the care and precision that’s required.
Vermeer and Griet rarely cross paths, but because she is often in his painting studio, her appreciation and insight into his work and artistic process grows. His skill, his vision, even his moods begin to intrigue and entice her. She is young, and he is aloof and talented. She longs to please him and seek his favour.
Then, during a party where Griet is serving, one of Vermeer’s drunk friends accosts her, his fingers grab-
bing her chin in the candlelight so he can examine her face. “You should paint her,” he says to Vermeer.
Griet is released from his grasp and scurries away, but the idea has been seeded with her master.
The next time Vermeer sees Griet, she is cleaning the windows in his studio, the light falling on her.
“Look over your shoulder at me again.”
And so begins the (fictional) story of how Vermeer came to paint one of his most famous paintings, and the girl who was his muse.
If you have read this book already, you’ll know, this story is a treasure. The writing is perfect, the history is vibrant, and the tension between sacrifice, attraction, and love is palpable as told through the voice of a girl on the cusp of womanhood.
Read this book! Then come talk to me about it.
It’s on the shelves now at Totally BOOK-ish.

The end of an era
byEllenNguyenOn September 4, 2001, the revolving door at the Clarke Theatre came to a close when Bronwen Sutherland took on the role of Theatre Manager. According to Martin Kelly, the biggest challenge for the new theatre manager would be"gettingtoknowthecommunity".
Looking back on the past 21 years, Bronwen has not only gotten to know the community, but she has been a large part of it. Under her management, Clarke Theatre has become the hub of entertainment, community events, ceremonies, and fundraisers. Many well-known musicians, comedians, actors and dancers have graced this stage through Bronwen's relationships with the Arts Club Theatre andRock.ItBoyEntertainment.

Know the Local Market When You Sell
Are you thinking of selling your home thisyear? If so, you might be paying extra attention to housing market news covered bytheregionalandnationalmedia.
While that news can be helpful information, it can sometimes say little about what’s happening in your particular neighbourhood. In fact, it’s possible for there to be a balancedmarket nationally or regionally, while at the same time, your street may be experiencing a hot seller’s market! That’s why it’s important to understand what’s happening in your local “micro” housing market when you’re sellingyourhome.
What do you need to know about your localrealestatescenehereinMission?
Hereareafewquestionstoaskyourself:
•Is our neighbourhood a seller’s, buyer’s, or balancedmarketrightnow?
•If we list our home this month, will there beany competing listings in our area? If so, howmany?
•How long is the average listing in our areatakingtosell?Aweek?Amonth?
•How much are properties like ours in theneighbourhoodsellingfor?
•How desirable is our neighbourhood? Howmanybuyersareactivelylookingtomove here? Are there currently buyers eager to purchase ahomelikeours?
•What are the demographics of buyers lookingtobuyinourneighbourhood?
•How important is it to fix up and stage myhomeifIdecidetosell?
Getting these local insights will be far more helpful than the national news when youput your property on the market. So, find out what’s happening right here, in your neighbourhood. How do youdothat?

English Tart’s PastieRecipe
Ingredients:
Pastry
1 lb (2 cups) flour
12 oz (1-1/2 cups) frozen butter
Ice cold water
Circular template (whatever size you wish but we use 6” guide)
Directions
Pastry
1.Grate frozen butter into flour. Chop this mixture with knife so it looks like large crumbs. Add just enough water to bring mixture together to form a dough.
2.Rest in fridge for one hour.
Filling
3. Preheat oven to 375ºF
4. Chop onion, potato and rutabaga into small chunks using a food processor. Combine the vegetables with the ground beef, stock, thyme and seasoning.
5. Roll pastry out to about 1/8 inch but doesn’t need to be exact. Cut out circles.
Filling
1lb (454 g) ground beef (finely cubed stewing steak can be used)
1 cup raw potato and rutabaga
1 onion
1/2 cup beef stock
Thyme
Salt and pepper
1 egg, beaten
6. Brush the outer edge of each circle with egg wash, then place meat and vegetable mixture onto each piece of pastry.
7. Bring each edge of the pastry circle together and press to form a ridge.
8. You can flute the edges of the pasties with your fingers or fold over to form a cord like seal.
9. Brush each pastie with egg wash and place on a lined baking sheet.
10. Bake at 375ºF for 45 mins until golden brown. Enjoy!
