CELEBRATING 5 YEARS IN MISSION! CELEBRATING 5 YEARS IN MISSION!
From Our Family t Y u !
How has it been 5 years already? We would not be hitting this milestone if it were not for the support of our community, customers, and friends. We are so thankful for all of you for letting us be Mission's Mexican restaurant! We are honoured to be trusted to host your special occasions - birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, and more. We give many thanks and put our trust in God to continue to bless our family, business, our customers and our beautiful community.
When we opened our restaurant, we knew no one in Mission. Fast forward 5 years and Mission has truly become home to us. In these 5 years, we learned 3 things to help us grow. First, always listen to our customers and what they want! There are always great ideas for us to develop and become better. Secondly, Mexican food is more popular than we anticipated, and it makes us so proud to share our culture! Social media have helped us share our food and taught us new trends in Mexican cuisine. Our popular Birria Tacos have become a hit after many people saw them on TikTok. Lastly, being involved in our community has not only been fun, but so fulfilling. We have been able to offer more services like hot lunch for schools, have taco stands at local festivals like Shine Bright, hand out free hot chocolate during the 4 x 4 Christmas parade, and participate in local fundraisers.
Our roots have grown deep in this community. We have met so many wonderful people, developed lifelong friendships, and worked alongside the many small businesses in. For your continued support, we thank you. Come by on June 17 and join us as we celebrate this milestone!
Sincerely, Autumn & Lupita CoronaApril 28 - May 14

Publisher’s Note
Soak up the sun!
When we think about the start of summer, May and June are usually busy with yearend recitals and concerts; playoffs and finals; and graduation ceremonies. With the winding down of our busy schedules, the beginning of summer also marks the opening of outdoor markets; days in the park; festivals and celebrations.
The Mission Raceway is abuzz with their season in full swing. May 28th will see the return of the Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association Spring Opener. The Farmers Market, Twilight Treasures Artisan Market and Deroche Farmers Markets all open their season this May. Be sure to support our local artisans, food producers and small businesses at these markets. Mark your calendars as there is a full line up of events coming to the Clarke Theatre and Heritage Park!
With the nicer weather, get outside and get moving. GoByBike Week is May 29-June 4. The ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge is back. Between June 1-30, track your personal physical activity minutes on the ParticipACTION app to help your community win $100,000!
June 3-9 is BC Seniors’ Week. There will be fun activities at Boswyk Senior Centre, the Legion, Cedarbrooke Chateau, Carrington House, and Lifetime Learning Centre to celebrate Mission seniors. Visit www.missionseniorscentre.com for their most up to date schedule.
This summer, explore and re-discover all that Mission has to offer. Stroll through the small businesses and stop by local restaurant patios and say hello. Get to know our local business owners, many of whom are our neighbours.
See you all out and about in Mission!
by Mission Artists Association, Mission Arts Centre. Opening reception: Sat, May 6, 1- 4pm. Passion – intense longing, compelling desire. Whatever our backgrounds, interests or styles, MAA members share a love of art. For some it’s exquisitely detailed animal portraits; for others, dramatic landscapes or the inventive use of colour and texture. All the artworks testify to our passion for the creative process. 604-826-0029 www.missionartscouncil.ca

Away Unwanted Energy
Spring is in the air! Let’s SMUDGE and get rid of some unwanted energy!
Another way to change your spaces energy for the better is to waft it with smoke (the good kind!). Using smoke from the embers of ancient medicinal herbs to “clear a space” is called smudging and the most popular plants to smudge with are sage, rosemary and other beautiful herbs.
When should I sage my space? Whenever you feel that it needs an ‘energetic cleanse’ or perhaps a Full or New Moon.
How to sage my space?
Set your intention. You need to be clear of the outcome that you want. Are you trying to cleanse a room of negative energy? Example: ‘I want this space to be filled with light, love and prosperity’.
Light your sage stick. Point the tip down and light the sage from the bottom so that the air draws it into the leaves and it burns evenly. If you burn the sage with the tip pointing up it may not light.
Sage yourself to make sure you are clear from any negative energies. Waft the sage towards you with your hand. Draw the smoke over all of these different areas: mind, ears, mouth, heart, back, hair, whole body and feet.
Open up all the windows in your house – this is a great time to let fresh air come in!
Start with the farthest room in the house (from the entrance) and walk around doing every corner, windowsill and doorways from the bottom up in each area. Windows and doorways are called ‘gateways’ and negative energy can easily enter the house through these. Carry a fire resistant dish around with you to catch any ash. (Remember, even though there is no flame, it’s still burning, so take care and watch out for any embers!)
Focus on high traffic areas, like the living room and kitchen. These are common areas that often hold energy from many different people.
Sage certain items in your house that you are constantly using or items that are people are handling a lot. These are susceptible to picking up negative energy.
At the end of your practice, sage the front door from the inside to the outside. Afterwards, take a bit of the ash and put it at the entrance. Place it on the inside of the door if you need to protect energies from going out, or on the outside if you have a lot of people coming in and you want to protect the energies that come through the door. Finally, clap your hands around the house dispel any lingering energies. Supposedly loud noises keep the energy out.
This is a wonderful cleansing ritual for you & your space. You’ll feel lighter… body, mind & soul!

FLORAL WEDDING TRENDS
by Lexi RichardsThe human desire to gather and celebrate love and marriage is stronger than ever, and flowers continue to be part of the big day. As with many cultures around the world, flowers play an important role at weddings. They provide beauty, enchantment, and a sense of time and place.
With unlimited ideas at our fingertips, it’s easier than ever to find inspiration to make celebrations meaningful.
The top wedding floral trends for 2023 include colour! Although the classic white and green will always be a mainstay, (and the feminine blush tones still look perfect); punches of fully saturated colours are appearing in our inspirational feeds. Juicy tangerine, true peacock blue, popping bubble-gum pink, and electric magenta are all shouting ‘fiesta!'
Next up we see the incorporation of botanical elements (that aren’t flowers) tucked into the decor including: grasses, ferns, fruit, mosses, and even mushrooms! For West Coast weddings, this is an easy concept to expand on: think enchanting woodland garden.
Bouquets remain a favourite, simply holding one makes you feel special. The whimsical garden-gathered bouquets of the past decade remain, each one as unique as the individual.
From big and billowy to petite or monochromatic; there’s a bouquet to match your style.
WowFactor. In contrast to our virtual-heavy world; flowers add a layer of multi-sensory immersion at an event. They provide a wow factor, and a subtle whisper to ‘stop and be present’. At the ceremony, this could look like a spectacular floral arbour or arch, a floral ‘ceremony’ nest, a couple of arresting floral urns, or even a floral mandala (an intricate tapestry of blooms). At the reception, it could look like a lavishly decorated head table, a floral wall or chandelier. Guaranteed the blooms will continue to wow as they frame the couples in their photos forever.
Eco-consciousflowers. The topics of sustainability, seasonality, and provenance are easier than ever to know. Ask your florist, and with imports, look for the seal of approval such as the Rainforest Alliance.
Theinfluenceofcultures from around the world creates a rich mashup of floral beauty. We’re familiar with some traditions, such as pinning on boutonnieres and corsages, but others such as selecting a particular flower for its meaning (floriography) is making a comeback. Marigold garlands or leis, flower crowns, and floral arbours all comfortably borrow from other traditions.
UniqueExpression. Flowers also make an appearance with the non-traditional, such as the media-viral hilarious flower boy.
It’s a great reminder that it’s all about the celebration, and flowers contribute regardless of religion, race, gender, or status. As a result, flowers help make a couple’s big day hold deeper meaning that transcends ‘just because they’re pretty’.

Ami’s Review
With flowers blooming all around us, and gardens starting to sprout, it seemed like a good time to review a book about flowers. The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh is a gorgeous, important story that will appeal to every flower-loving, flower-growing, flower-giving person or, of course, anyone who just loves an excellent read.
My love for this story goes beyond my love for flowers though. It is also a story about aging out of foster care. Having worked in social work and numerous group homes, I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggle these kids have and the love they continue to desire. As these kids get older and harder to place in forever homes, they’re often left alone and unprepared to face their futures. Many are still yearning for the love of a family even as they enter adulthood, just like the main character in The Language of Flowers.
But I digress, onto the story!
In the Victorian age, flowers were each given a meaning to convey expressions: white carnations symbolized purity, chrysanthemums meant you’re a wonderful friend, and daffodils meant chivalry and unrequited love. But over time, the language of flowers has become lost for more modern ways to express yourself.
For one girl though, communicating through flowers is the only way she knows how to express her feelings. Victoria Jones has spent her childhood in foster care,
and it has left its mark, leaving her unable to trust or get close to anyone else. Her antiquated knowledge of flowers and their meanings is the one way she feels connected to her world and able to communicate with others.
When she turns eighteen and is emancipated from the foster care system, she finds herself without a plan and with nowhere to go. A kind stranger recognizes Victoria’s unusual gift with flowers, and offers her a job in a flower shop. Here she learns that the flowers she picks for her customers, based on their needs and the floral meanings, start to have an impact. And one particular person seems extra eager to accept the flowers she chooses for him. Will Victoria’s language of flowers be enough to save her from her past, and open up the doors to a new, brighter future where she can finally learn to trust, and maybe even love?
This is such a wonderful story, and I hope that outside of being an enjoyable read, it will expand your knowledge and compassion for kids in the foster system, and how a little bit of kindness and support can go a long way in the lives of these precious, sometimes damaged, kids who still only want love.
The Language of Flowers is on the shelf now at Totally BOOK-ish
A portion of all sales of this book will go towards Cyrus Centre.

When Your Mind Races at Night When Your Mind Races at Night
Do you ever find yourself lying awake at night, with your mind racing and unable to shut off?
Maybe you're worrying about something that happened during the day, or maybe you're anxious about something that might happen in the future. Whatever the cause, a racing mind can be incredibly frustrating and exhausting. If you're experiencing this, you're not alone. Many people struggle with racing thoughts at night, and it can impact both your mental and physical health. In this blog post, we'll explore some strategies you can use to calm your mind and get a better night's sleep.
Practice Relaxation Techniques
Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help you calm your mind and body. These techniques can slow down your breathing and heart rate, which in turn can reduce your feelings of anxiety and stress. You can try incorporating these techniques into your bedtime routine to help you wind down before sleep.
Write Down Your Thoughts
One reason why your mind might be racing at night is because you have too many thoughts swirling around in your head. Writing down your thoughts can help you get them out of your head and onto paper. This can help you process your emotions and make sense of what you're feeling. It can also help you identify any patterns or triggers that might be contributing to your racing thoughts.
Practice Good Sleep Hygiene
Good sleep hygiene means creating a sleep-friendly environment and establishing healthy sleep habits. This includes things like keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed, and sticking to a regular sleep schedule. When you create an environment that promotes relaxation and sleep, you may find that your mind is less likely to race at night.
Seek Professional Help
If your racing thoughts are interfering with your daily life and preventing you from getting the sleep you need, it might be time to seek professional help. A counsellor can help you identify the underlying causes of your racing thoughts and provide you with strategies to manage them and get the rest you need.
If you're struggling with racing thoughts at night, know that there are strategies and resources available to help you. By practicing relaxation techniques, writing down your thoughts, practicing good sleep hygiene, and seeking professional help when necessary, you can calm your mind and get the rest you need to feel your best. Remember, a good night's sleep is essential for both your mental and physical health, so don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

HEALTHY EYES HEALTHY EYES
May is Vision Health Month, reminding us of the importance of eye health and the vital role regular eye tests play. So how can you look after your eyes?
5. Maintain A Healthy Weight
Excess body weight has also been linked to glaucoma. Exercising and eating healthily can help you reduce your Type 2 Diabetes risk and maintain a healthy weight.
6. Protect Your Eyes from UV Light
UV light can damage your eyes just as it can damage your skin and it’s a risk factor for cataracts. Never look at the sun directly and on bright days always wear sunglasses with UV 400 or 100% UV protection
1. Lower Alcohol Consumption
Heavy alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cataracts and early age-related macular degeneration. Both men and women should limit the number of drinks you have on a single occasion, and the amount of drinks you have per day and week over time.
2. Don’t Smoke
Aside from aging, smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing AMD, and smokers are far more likely to develop it than non-smokers. Smoking also increases your risk of developing cataracts.
3.
Eat An Eye-Friendly Diet
Diet plays a highly significant role in eye health. Important foods to include in your diet are orangecolour vegetables and fruits with Vitamin A, fruits and veggies rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, cold-water fish with omega-3 fatty acids, leafy green vegetables rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, beans and zinc.
4. Exercise Regularly
Lack of exercise contributes significantly to several eye conditions, particularly amongst the over-60s. Exercise may reduce the risk of sight loss caused by narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes.
7. Have regular eye tests – even if you think your think your eyesight and health are fine Sight tests are about more than checking if you need glasses. They can detect eye conditions you may be unaware of, catching them at an early stage when treatment may be easier and sight loss potentially avoidable. Sight tests can also detect other health conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes.
Come and visit us if you have any questions about your eye health.

LOCAL LOVING LOVING
Three
A Family Affair A Family Affair
This March at the BC Winter Games, Mission’s Kohen Ikeda earned a silver medal in artistic gymnastics for the men's floor and placed fourth in rings, fifth in high bars, and 10th in all-around competition. When asked what motivates him, he says he loves gymnastics because of "the challenge. It is a sport where you can see very clearly your strength and understanding of the skill grow and it results in a beautifully executed skill/routine. Trying to find new ways to improve and learn that new skill is a constant leveling up and learning/problem solving experience.”
Digging a little deeper, we have discovered that Kohen's gymnastics lineage can be traced back to his grandparents in Japan. Mitsugu and Chiyoko were both senior level gymnasts for the Chukyo University gymnastics team in Nagoya. They fell in love with the sport and each other. They graduated with their teaching degrees and immigrated to Canada in 1973 with just a suitcase and a $1,000 in their pocket.
All three of their children, Richard, Ken, and Julie, have carried on their parents’ passion for gymnastics. Both Richard and Ken Ikeda have competed nationally and
internationally - multiple times at Pan American Games, World University Games, Elite Canada, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships. Richard has competed at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta; Ken followed his brother 8 years later at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. While all the siblings have retired from competition, they, along with their parents, continue to coach at all levels at Twisters. Mitsugu, Richard, and Ken have coached and produced numerous national level athletes. Ken says “as far as coaching goes, it's rewarding to guide the athletes to be the best they can be. Not every athlete is going to be an Olympian, but we try to get them to be the best they can be while enjoying their time in the gym and creating lifelong friendships.”
For the Ikedas, gymnastics is truly a family affair. The next generation is carrying on the legacy. Richard’s children: Ethan was the 2023 Provincial Champion at the senior level; Alec was the 2023 Provincial Champion for the junior level; and Hannah was Level 3 Provincial Champion in 2019. Ken’s son Kohen just brought home a silver medal at the BC Winter Games. Keep an eye on these young Mission athletes as they follow in their parents' footsteps.

Gallery 7 Theatre will be wrapping up its 30 (+2) Birthday Season with the comedy, Jeeves Intervenes, running May 19 – 27, 2023 at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium in Abbotsford. Written by Margaret Raether and inspired by characters created by P.G. Wodehouse, the farce is described as ‘a cocktail of a show, as bright and engaging as a garden party in May” by the Chicago Tribune and “a comedy that’s funny every way you look at it” by the Third Coast Daily.
“What better way to end of a year of celebrating 30+ years of live theatre in the Fraser Valley than with this fun comedy,” exclaims Ken Hildebrandt, Gallery 7 Theatre’s Executive/Artistic Director. “We had to jump through several hoops to license this show and we’re thrilled the estate of P.G. Wodehouse gave us their blessing to include the play in our special season. I think audiences are in for a great time at the theatre, filled with amusement and laughter.”
The posh, high society London scene of the 1920s is thrown into chaos by hapless playboy, Bertie Wooster, and his old school chum, Eustace Bassington-Bassington. The
two hatch a brilliant plan to dupe their meddling relatives to save Bertie from an undesired marriage and Eustace from an unwanted job in India. But will the ever-faithful manservant, Jeeves, be able to rescue these bumbling fools from themselves? A delightful romp full of deception and disguise, the play is a perfect celebration of the arrival of summer.
Directed by Kerri Norris, the play will feature performers from across the Fraser Valley including Adriel Brandt, Koenraad Beugelink, Nigel Brooke, Beth Gasser, Emily Hamel and Stephen Elcheshen. Set design is by Andrew Potts, costume design is by Vicki Bolan, lighting design is by Nigel Brooke, sound design is by Gabe Kirkley and make-up & hair design is by Raelyn Schatz. The stage manager is Natalie Hoogstra and production photography is by Dianna Lewis.
Jeeves Intervenes will run May 19 & 20, 24 – 27, 2023 at 7:30 PM with matinees on May 20 & 27 at 2:00 PM at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford. For tickets and full details, please visit www.gallery7theatre.com or call 604-504-5940.
