Welcome to What’s On Oslo in July and August, when the heady days of the intense Nordic summer really hit their stride (hopefully!).
July and to a certain extent August are the main months of summer holidays for many people that live in Norway. July is fellesferien, which means “the common holiday”.
It is a time of trips to forest, mountain and seaside cabins called hytter, and the spread of sun and adventure hungry Norwegians across the globe.
If Oslo seems a bit empty, it is probably because the people are hanging out in their cabins or exploring beaches in Italy, or ruined Inca cities in Peru.
The capital offers both fantastic nature and city experiences, and July and August are perfect for exploring both.
From leafy parks and urban beaches to mighty forests and beautiful islands surrounded by black-blue water in the Oslo fjord, the possibilities are many. Oslo is also a major cultural hub, and in this issue, you will find the city’s official Museum Guide to all the exhibitions and events happening in July and August.
A hot tip is the National Museum, which last year finally reopened after several years, in a huge new purpose built building near the fjord in the city centre.
The Nordic region’s biggest National Museum boasts Norway’s largest collections of art, architecture and design. Just a few examples are works by famous artists like Edvard Munch (including The Scream) and Lousie Bourgeois, drawings from the time of Bruegel and Rubens, and a fine collection of Sámi art from the north.
There are lots of other exiting museums all over town, such as Fram - the Polar Exploration Museum, The Viking Planet, works and artefacts from the Royal Collections in the Queen Sonja Art Stable, Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, and the wonderful International Museum of Children’s Art in a cozy wooden house!
Near the end of the magazine, we have maps to help you find your way around town.
Enjoy! Team What’s On Oslo

A time capsule Ibsen's Apartment in Oslo
The Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen is one of the most influential and frequently staged dramatists in history.
In Oslo lies a physical space that holds great significance — the apartment where Ibsen resided for the final years of his life. This historical space, with a view to the Royal Palace, contains Ibsen's original interiors.
Upon entering Ibsen's apartment, visitors are transported back in time. The space reflects the style and aesthetics of the late 19th century.
A Home Filled with History
After several years of closure, the reopening of Ibsen Museum & Theatre this summer gives visitors the opportunity to explore and experience both his apartment and the new adjacent exhibition.
- We are tremendously pleased to re-open the Ibsen Museum for the general audience again. His flat has been newly conserved and there are several new objects in the exhibition, Museum Director Nina Refseth enthusiastically tells What’s On Oslo.
- We also have a new, smaller exhibition with information about and impressions from his works. Thus, we hope to attract new and interested visitors to the home of one of the world’s greatest playwrights, Refseth says.
Ibsen's apartment, nestled in Arbins gate 1, was a haven for the playwright during his final years from 1895 to 1906. Stepping into this preserved space is like entering a time capsule, with Ibsen's original furniture, original colours and décor and personal artifacts adorning the rooms.
When Ibsen’s wife Suzannah died in 1914 their home was dismantled, and their furniture scattered. His study and bedroom was deposited at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the library went to the Henrik Ibsen Museum in Skien and the dining room to The Ibsen Museum in Grimstad. The family retained possession of the remaining furniture.
In 1990 actor Knut Wigert took the fateful decision to rent the apartment, based on a wish to make it available to the public. Norwegian Museum of Cultural History took over responsibility for the museum in 1993.
The apartment was equipped with a gas stove and a bathtub, amenities that were considered modern luxuries during Ibsen’s time.
From the very spot where Ibsen sat and wrote, he had a view to The Royal Palace.
THE MUSEUM LIST
Oslo has dozens of museums covering all kinds of topics, including intriguing stories from the past, classic and contemporary art, scientific and literary achievements, human rights, and much, much more. Whatever you’re into, chances are high you’ll find it in one of the museums in these pages!

Technology which used to be available only to pilots and astronauts combines flight simulator movements with an “eye-view” movie to create a unique and realistic feel. Once inside the the Ski Simulator you will get the “ride of your life”, when the skiing starts. Up to 12 people can sit inside at the same time and the whole ride lasts about 5 minutes. “Amazing ride, amazing experience. It made me realize how crazy you have to be to go skiing at 130 km/h and how dangerous it is”
