MERRY CHRISTMAS! Welcome to What’s On Oslo in December; for countless people the month of holidays, family, gifts, Christmas markets and non-stop coziness. Whether you celebrate Christmas as a Christian holiday, as simply a treasured tradition, or don’t celebrate at all, there is something special about December. It’s not just Christmas, which means holidays, and for many kids Santa Claus, packets under the Christmas tree, and general wonderment. This is also the final month of the year, round ed off in Oslo with a bang, or rather many bangs, as fireworks celebrate the coming year. But in Oslo there is one other tradition you can count on every December: This is the month when the world famous Nobel Peace Prize is handed out at a ceremony in Oslo City Hall. In our December issue you can read the fascinating story behind the prize and its creator Alfred Nobel, inventor

of dynamite, and discover some related activities you can get up to - from a big Nobel Concert to an exhibition and a torchlight march in honour of the laureates. Returning to Christmas, we also include a detailed guide to one of our favourite activities this time of year: Christmas markets! Not much can beat browsing stalls with traditional handicrafts while sipping on some mulled wine (Norwegian: gløgg), as a choir sings traditional Christmas songs in the background and the kids are kept occupied riding a horse and cart. Christmas is also a time for lots of great food, and in this issue you can learn more about these delicious dish es and where to find them, from full meals to Christmas desserts, snacks and drinks, and even what do to if you are on an alternative diet. Of course, December isn’t only about Christmas and peace prizes. When you just want to have a good meal, experience the city’s cultural life or go shopping, begin by browsing our guides to all these things and more! Enjoy! Team What’s On Oslo.

03.10.2015 – 17.01.2016 VIGELAND+MUNCH

For the first time a major dual exhibition will be devoted to two giants in the history of Norwegian art, Edvard Munch (18631944) and Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). They worked during the same period. One primarily as a painter and printmaker, the other as a sculptor. They were affiliated with the same circles and influenced by the same contemporary art movements. And for a period they both lived and worked – even in adjoining rooms – in Berlin. Many are of the opinion that the two were rivals. This exhi bition wishes to clarify the connections between them by presenting their artistic careers side by side, from the time they began study ing at The Royal College of Design in Kristiania, to the time they became well-es tablished artists at Ekely and Frogner respectively.

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Sev eral showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

The museum covers Norwegian military history, from the Viking era (ca. 900 - 1000), through the numerous Nordic wars under Danish rule (ca. 1400 - 1814) to the Napoleonic wars. New permanent exhibition about the union with Sweden. New exhibition about World War II campaign 1940. The houses in the open-air museum are decorated according to the traditions of the original inhabitants, showing how Christmas has been celebrated through the ages in both poor and rich Norwegian homes.

HAVE A TASTY CHRISTMAS Discover traditional, weird and wonderful Norwegian Christmas food and where to find it! - What is typical for Norwegian Christmas food is that we eat what’s been eaten for generations, restaurant keeper Kay Johnsen at Engebret Café, Oslo’s oldest restaurant and a bastion for traditional food, points out to What’s On Oslo. Engebret Café is a classic place for a Christmas meal in atmospheric surro undings, and they certainly know their traditional Christmas food. However, Christmas food traditions vary by region. Coastal traditions are different from those found inland, and the traditions of East Norway are different from those of North, South and West Norway.

52

Because of this, Engebret Café’s Johnsen is a little unsure what a typical Christmas dish consists of. - Norwegian Christmas food has strong and varied traditions. But I think most people either eat lutefisk (stockfish in lye), pinnekjøtt (salted lamb ribs) or ribbe (roasted pork belly). Many also eat rakfisk (fermented fish, usually trout) - and for those who really want to challenge themselves there is Smalahove (boiled lamb’s head), Johnsen says. All Norwegian Christmas food is also accompanied by lots of great side dishes. There is pease pudding, red cabbage, mashed swede, Christmas sausage, and more.

Ekebergrestauranten - a sure bet if you are looking for a traditional culinary Christmas experience topped off with a fantastic view of the city and fjord.

CHRISTMAS WITH A VIEW Another good bet if you are looking for traditional food is Ekebergrestauranten, a prestigious restaurant in an elegant 1920s classic functionalism building, magnificently perched on top of a hill overlooking the city and fjord. As well as offering an amazing view, Ekebergrestauranten opens its Christmas menu on November 11th and is a sure bet for those looking for a “traditional” culinary Christmas experience. - We mainly offer traditional food, such as lutefisk, pinnekjøtt and rakørret (fermented trout) for dinner, and a traditional lunch menu, but also

some slightly alternative dishes by Norwegian standards, such as hjort (red deer) and andebryst (duck breast), the restaurant’s cook Tore Aspås explains to What’s On Oslo. - For dessert in the banquet area we go for traditional multekrem (clud berries and whipped cream) and riskrem (rice porridge mixed with whipped cream served with red berries sauce), while in the restaurant we offer multe (cloud berries), he adds. Just a few of many other restaurants with popular Christmas menues are Frognerseteren, Dovrehallen, Lofoten fiskerestaurant, Tjuvholmen Sjømagasin, Cafe Christiania, Restaurant Havsmak, and Festningen.

THE CHRISTMAS TABLE

quet with a buffet, often arranged by the companies where people work.

And as with many Norwegian restau rants during the Christmas season, Ekebergrestauranten allows people and companies to arrange julebord (“Christmas Table”).

On Sunday the 6th and 13th of Decem ber Ekebergrestauranten even arrange special family julebord, complete with a visit by Santa Claus himself.

This is a tradition stemming from the Middle Ages and originally involved giving food to the poor and leaving food outside the house at night, as an offering to mythical creatures such as Trolls. In modern times it has evolved into a kind of Christmas feast or ban

54

Furthermore, at home there is the tradition of serving up a big Christ mas buffet for breakfast/lunch on Christmas day. The buffet contains a lot of Norwegian Christmas food, usually also including leftovers from Christmas Eve.

*

Ekebergrestauranten's butler recommends you try their delicious pinnekjøtt this Christmas.

SWEET CHRISTMAS Christmas is the sweet season too, with a mind boggling amount of desserts and candy consumed across the country. For dessert the two most traditional dishes are the aforementioned multek rem and riskrem. Norwegian tradition further dictates that seven different kinds of Christmas biscuits should feature on the table – all homemade. While far from everyo ne sticks closely to this, it’s definitely one of our favourite traditions! The specific kinds of biscuits vary by region and even family, but some of the most popular today are pepperkaker (gingerbreads), krumkaker (waffle cookies), sandkaker (sugar coo kies), sirupssnipper (syrup cookies), smultringer (Norwegian doughnuts), berlinerkranser (wreath-shaped cookies) and kransekaker (a series of cookies placed on top of each other to form a cone).

CHRISTMAS DRINKS One of the most common traditional drinks accompaniments to Christ mas food is Norway’s national drink, akevitt (Aquavit) – a potato based spirit flavored with herbs such as caraway seeds, anise, dill, fennel and coriander.

Many Norwegian breweries produce special beers for Christmas that are dark and often stronger than normal beers, called juleøl (“Christmas Beer”). In fact, Vinmonopolet, Norway’s chain of state controlled stores for alcohol stronger than 4.75 percent, stocks more than 100 different varieties of juleøl this season! There are also slightly less strong juleøl in grocery stores all over the country. Christmas drinks don’t only involve alcohol, though. For the kids (and quite a few adults!), the red soda julebrus (“Christmas Soda”) is popular this time of year. There are quite a lot of varie ties, and as with the juleøl, different julebrus are often compared in media taste tests. Then there is gløgg (mulled wine). The traditional kind contains red wine with sugar and spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and bitter orange. Many popular alcohol-free variants that replace the wine with fruit juices such as blackcurrant can also be found in stores. Have we tempted your taste buds enough? Enjoy your culinary Christmas journey! ■

Alfred’s Noble Idea

Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel was once condemned for becoming “rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before”. Why does the Nobel Peace Prize use his name, and how did it become the world’s most prestigious award? Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) was no Moth er Teresa, but neither is it clear that he was a war monger. Well-educated and one of Europe’s most wealthy men, he invented dyna mite and other explosives - including a rocket propellant still in use today - that went on to kill many in wars and conflicts. He was also central in turn ing a Swedish iron and steel producer into a weapon producer.

At heart Nobel was not only an industrial magnate, but an inventor. His invention dynamite had not been developed for use in war, even though it was fast adopted for this use as well. He

His father, industrialist and inventor Immanuel Nobel, founded a weapons factory and invented the first effective naval mine, used by Tsarist Russia in the Crimean war of the 1850s. And yet Alfred Nobel claimed that he worked for an end to war, was friends with a famous peace activist, and left behind a will that led to the founding of the Nobel Peace Prize.

NOBEL: CYNIC OR IDEALIST? Historians disagree about Alfred Nobel’s personal opinions on war.

registered more than 350 other patents for inventions, of which some, but by no means all, had clear military potential. At the same time his famous will established prizes for those who ‘shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind,’ including ‘the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.’ - We don’t know the reason for that, but many thought he was inspired and influenced by his close friend Bertha von Suttner, who was an author and peace activist and who herself received the prize in 1905, Executive Director Bente Erichsen at Oslo’s Nobel Peace Center tells What’s On Oslo.

WEAPONS AS DETERRENCE Austrian countess von Suttner and Alfred Nobel communicated for years. According to von Suttner, her friend had his own ideas about promoting peace. In 1891 Nobel told her: “Perhaps my factories will put an end to war sooner than your congresses: on the day that two army corps can mutually annihilate each other in a second, all civilized nations will surely recoil with horror and disband their troops.” Influenced by Bertha von Suttner he joined, and donated to, a peace association. Among other activities, he employed a former Turkish diplomat tasked with keeping him up to date on international peace work, including ideas about an international peace court.

cold, but a series of proxy wars fought around the world so that the nuclear armed United States and Soviet Union didn’t have to fight each other directly.

‘MERCHANT OF DEATH’

Furthermore, when his brother Ludvig died in 1888, several newspapers thought that it was Alfred that had died and wrote his obituary instead, eight years before his actual demise. A French newspaper wrote that ‘the merchant of death is dead,’ and that ‘Dr. Alfred Nobel … became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before’.

On the other hand, it can be argued that it was economically and morally convenient for Nobel to promote weap ons as deterrence against war. At best, he was wrong. As history since the death of Nobel has shown, powerful weapons haven’t led to the end of armies and vicious conflicts. Not even the Cold War with its nuclear deterrence was actually

58

Some say that this shocked him and made him determined to secure his legacy with his will.

RISE OF THE PEACE PRIZE Was Alfred Nobel a cynic who made excuses so that he could sell his deadly inventions and who established a will to make himself look better, or a repentant sinner, or a naive but dedicated proponent of world peace? Or maybe a little of all these things? It is hard to know. But one thing that is beyond dispute, is that Nobel’s ambitious will resulted in several world famous Nobel prizes for societal advances, including the Peace Prize. As well as the Peace Prize, his will established prizes in chemistry, literature, physics and physiology or medicine. These were first awarded in 1901. Although not mentioned in Nobel’s will, a sixth prize in economics was established in 1968. All of these are highly prestigious and are still awarded today.

Nobel was Swedish and the prizes are awarded in Sweden by Swedish institutions, except for the Nobel Peace Prize which is awarded in Norway by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. It was Nobel himself in his will who decided that Norway should award the Peace Prize, but he didn’t say why (although various theories have been put forward).

BEACON OF LIGHT IN A VIOLENT CENTURY The 20th century saw two world wars and the Cold War. During all these upheavals, the Nobel Peace Prize has continued to be awarded every year, with a few exceptions, such as during the Nazi occupation of Norway during World War II. Since the first peace prize in 1901, it has gone to individuals 103 times and 26 times to organizations. Recent ex amples are Iran’s Shirin Ebadi, China’s

Liu Xiaobo, the European Union, and Pakistan’s Malala Yousafai together with India’s Kailash Satyarthi. Until the 1970s, almost all the prizes went to laureates in Europe or North America. But as the world has shrunk, the prize’s reputation and reach has grown. In fact, since the 1970s more of the prizes have gone to other regions than those that have gone to “the West”. Contributing to its fame has been the numerous controversies surrounding some of the award decisions, which is not surprising given the highly political nature of the prize. Controversial laureates include America’s Henry Kissinger, Palestine’s Yasser Arafat together with Israel’s Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin, and US President Barack Obama.

WHAT WOULD ALFRED DO? In recent years some people have accused the Nobel Committee of not following the instructions in Nobel’s will. This was the case with the award that went to Kenya’s Wangari Maathai in 2004. She ran a Kenyan environmental organization focused on environmental conservation, the planting of trees and women’s rights. While the critics said that this had noth ing to do with peace work, the Nobel Committee and supporters point to the connection between human rights, environmental destruction and conflict. Some people argue that the Nobel Committee has increasingly awarded the prize for situations not covered by the will’s focus on ‘fraternity between nations’, ‘abolition or reduction of standing armies’ or ‘holding and promotion of peace congresses’. Has the Nobel Peace Prize lost direction? Bente Erichsen at the Nobel Peace Center thinks not:

21ST CENTURY NOBEL - It’s up to the Nobel Committee to interpret the testament and adapt the prize for today’s realities, and I think they are doing a great job. That the result is sometimes controversial just shows that the prize is important and engages many. It is evident that the prize has to develop along with society - and my personal opinion is that Alfred Nobel would think so too, Erichsen says.

- This year’s laureate, the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, was a good choice. The Nobel Committee has highlighted a country in a very tur bulent region, where civil society has succeeded in creating dialogue and good prerequisites for democracy. It’s important to highlight good examples, and maybe particularly in a part of the world where there are so few of them, she points out. - I hope this will contribute to inspiring other countries to find peaceful solu tions to their conflicts, she adds. ■

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-underground-butikk) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy second-hand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Family Store (Jernbanetorget 2 / uffnorge.org) with a more conventional second-hand selection. Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2 / fuglen.no) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the pla tes. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 56 / frokendianassalonger.no) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22 / trabantclothing. com) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.

They sell books related to the fields of the four institutions tied to the muse um: The National Gallery, The National Museum – Architecture, The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate.

DESIGN

Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. And if you have a sweet tooth, Freia Chocolate Shop (Karl Johans gate 31 / freia. no) offers tasty, high quality Norwegian chocolate.

Alternative

Christmas

Did you know that some Muslims celebrate Christmas? Or that that there is plenty of vegetarian Christmas food?

Funky Fresh Foods . Photo: Anine Desiré

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen Few things feel as traditional as Christmas and Christmas food, but there are increasing options for people in Oslo that want an alternative celebration.

way. Pak Mat, a company based in Oslo that is Norway’s biggest distributor of halal meat, sold more than 1.5 tonnes of the traditional Christmas dish pinnekjøtt (salted lamb ribs) last year.

As people with different nationalities, religious beliefs and dietary requirements have increased, new markets have opened for traditional Christmas food, while Christmas food itself has expanded to encompass new dishes.

As Pak Mat’s product and marketing director Shahid Hussain points out, you don’t have to be Christian to enjoy Christmas.

Quite a few Muslims, for instance, celebrate Christmas as a cozy social event. The only Christmas food Muslims need to avoid is that made from pork, and the animals to be eaten need to be slaughtered in the correct (halal)

68

- I’m not particularly religious, just like many other not particularly religious Norwegians that still celebrate Christmas as a nice family time. Besides, Jesus is considered to be a prophet in Islam, so from that perspective it’s not a problem either, Shahid tells What’s On Oslo.

- I think it’s cozy to celebrate Christ mas, quite simply. We have a Christ mas tree at home, the children love it - and you don’t turn into a Christian by having a Christmas tree, he says.

MEATLESS CHRISTMAS Increasing amounts of people dispense with the meat and fish parts of traditio nal Christmas food altogether. Vegetarians (no meat or fish) and ve gans (no meat, fish or dairy) can order from special veggie sections of menus at many restaurants, and a growing number of places have opened that exclusively focus on vegetarian and vegan food, including Christmas food.

This includes Funky Fresh Foods, a vegan eatery and shop. - We serve a Christmas plate with almost everything on it. We have a Christmas veggie nut roast inspired by a Jamie Oliver recipe, red cabbage with traditional additions like cinnamon, cloves and vinegar, turnip purée, cranberry jam, brussel sprouts pan fried with shallots, garlic, parsley and lemon juice, gluten-free and vegan gravy, cauliflower “meatballs”, vegan sausage, and potatoes au gratin with cashew cheese on top, Funky Fresh Foods’ chef Paulus Gasparavicius tells What’s On Oslo. They also serve Christmas dessert,

including vegan ‘riskrem’ (rice porrid ge normally mixed with whipped cream and served with red berries sauce) and a raw Christmas-inspired orange cake. At time of writing they were still working on the Christmas drinks, which Paulus thought could include something along the lines of a vegan Christmas milkshake or smoothie. Loving Hut is another eatery focusing exclusively on vegan food, and from December 9th they serve a special Christmas meal. - Firstly, our goal is to offer our vegan customers a traditional and delicious Christmas meal. Secondly, we want to convince non-vegan customers that being vegan, you can still enjoy a full tasty Christmas meal and dinner with friends and family, Loving Hut’s mana

ger Hannah Ng tells What’s On Oslo. Here you can enjoy a creamy mushroom soup as a starter, before gorging on a main meal consisting of a vegan Rustic Roast and farmhouse-styled vegan sausage, served with rosemary-roasted potatoes, pudding, steamed vegetables and gravy. For dessert they offer a vegan Christmas mince pie served with custard and ice cream. As if that isn’t enough, for the first time this year there will be a ‘Vegan Christmas Festival’ at Vulkan Arena on December 12th (www.julefestival.com). Here you can try food from different eateries and shops, browse stalls with vegan food and ethical products, take part in Christmas workshops, and more.

INTERNATIONAL CHRISTMAS It’s even possible to find traditional Christmas food from other countries. At the top of Holmenkollen, Voksenåsen Hotel enjoys an amazing view of town and its surroundings. Voksenåsen was Norway’s national gift to Sweden as thanks for help during and after World War Two and is owned by the Swedish Ministry of Culture. On three Sundays in December, the 6th, 13th and 20th, Voksenåsen serves a mix of traditional Swedish and Norwegian Christmas dishes at their family Christmas dinners. The specifi cally Swedish dishes include Swedish Christmas ham, prince-sausage (on request), honey-glazed pork ribs (on request) and more. If you are part of a group you can also pre-book Swedish and Norwegian Christmas food for other days in December. Similarly, Lysebu, also at the top of Holmenkollen and with fantastic views of its surroundings, is Norway’s gift to Denmark for help during World War Two. As with Voksenåsen, Lysebu has family Christmas dinners on the three December Sundays 6th, 13th and 20th, but this time the Norwegian Christmas food is mixed with Danish Christmas food. Specifically, the Danish head and sous chefs have concocted a modern Nordic mix of Danish and northern Norwegian dishes that draw inspirati on from classic variants. There is also food especially suited for children, a Christmas workshop for kids after the dinner - and Santa may drop by for a visit. And it’s possible to drop by the restaurant on other days and try different types of Danish-Nor wegian Christmas food. These menus change every week.

CHRISTMAS FOR ALL Christmas time is often a time for family and friends, but also a time for taking care of those that are less fortunate. Among those putting words into action in this regard are the diaconal foundation Kirkens bymisjon (Church City Mission), who run a Christmas campaign to raise awareness about people that don’t have the resources – and maybe not even a home – for the kind of Christmas that many take for granted. The campaign culminates with their annual Christmas Eve celebration in Oslo Cathedral (Oslo domkirke), from 5pm to 10:30pm (mass at 11pm). As well as being an important social meeting place for those that may feel lonely on Christmas - and for anyone else that wants to join - the evening fe atures a Christmas dinner, Christmas gifts, coffee and cakes. If you send an sms to 2490, you auto matically donate 80 Norwegian kroner that go towards the foundation’s activities, such as dinners on the night itself and many other occasions with fellowship and warm meals. Kirkens bymisjon expects about 300400 guests on the night. There will be both young and old, students, tourists and people living on the streets of Oslo. In other words, this is a great opportunity to really get in touch with the Christmas spirit and celebrate with people from many walks of life. - We call for warmth and inclusion in this city. We’re working for a warmer society where people receive empathy, respect and justice, says the foundati on’s General Secretary Adelheid Firing Hvambsal. ■

FROGNER & MAJORSTUA

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying.
