What is a Long-term Care Ombudsman?

A person who addresses resident complaints and advocates for improvements in nursing homes and assisted living. The ombudsman is resident-centered and seeks to resolve issues and concerns of residents in long-term care to the resident’s satisfaction and with the resident’s consent. The ombudsman works for Anne Arundel County Department of Aging & Disabilities.

How can the ombudsman help?

Educate residents, their family, facility staff, and the public about resi-

dents’ rights, signs and indicators of elder abuse, and aspects of good care in a nursing home and assisted living setting; Advocate for changes to improve residents’ quality of life and care individually and as a group; Seek legal, administrative and other avenues to protect residents; Provide information to the public regarding long-term care facilities and services, legislative and policy issues.

Who can contact the Ombudsman Program? Residents of long-term care, families, staff of facilities, and any person who has a concern about a resident or would like information about nursing homes and assisted living.
