The Atlin Whisper
“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.”
Margaret Mead
On October 3, 2024, Atlin School is hosting the 2nd Atlin School Cross-Country Run. Young runners have been invited from the Yukon and Northern BC. We are looking for adult volunteers to assist with various duties for the event. There is a Volunteer Meeting on September 12 at 7 PM in the high school classroom at Atlin School.
On October 3, volunteers meet at 845 AM to be debriefed and assisted to their position. The event is planned to be finished by 2 PM.
We are also looking for people who would like to bake cookies or other salable items to be part of the concession students will be running at the Pine Creek Campground. Any questions, please contact Rosie Mulder at 651-7525 or email rosie.mulder@sd87.bc.ca
A GUITAR PLAYER ON THE YUKON BORDER
By Paul Lucas
There are many reasons I packed up a ‘normal’ life to move North, and if you are one of those long suffering readers who has managed to reach this entry, you have been dragged through every single one of ‘em.
The Yukon border is like nowhere on the planet. It’s easy to wax eloquent on the subject.
‘Beautiful’ doesn’t begin to describe the physical geography, and Atlin ... well ... what can I say ... it’s hard to be the prettiest girl on the block and not strut your stuff. I apologize, along with my fellow Atlinites, for the endless shaking of the keester. It’s a tic of some sort, and something I should probably get looked at.
That being said, it’s the people who make this place what it is. From day one, the characters drawn here were the dreamers and the adventurers; the trail blazers and the independents - to quote Yukon artist Jim Robb - ‘The Colourful Five Percent.’ They are an unruly lot and they herd like cats, but they’re one hell of a lot of fun.
Still, people cut from different cloth have to find a way to connect in a small town. It is a matter of survival, and regardless of the differences, that job has to be done. Some of these connections spawn unlikely bedfellows, but what is gained is exponentially greater than what is lost in being only one.
Bridging the gap takes a little effort, but there are ways to get the job done. Tolerance, grace and kindness help, but the king of the heap tends to be humour. There is no outlook so different, no divide so great, that humour can’t defeat it. Stand up comics know this well. And small towns are built on it. Humour is the universal language. Once that divide is crossed, anything is possible. And humans at their best are unassailable.
The North is special. It’s a place you can build a cabin with your own two hands and live a life of independence; a place where people are just a little kinder to each other, where rules and regulations are subject to common sense, and the land is a major partner in every transaction. It’s a place where you get to touch down in a helicopter on the tip of a glacier - just to have lunch ... where you can end up sitting in the local cafe with a goldminer, a musician, an outfitter, a pilot, an artist, a carpenter and the local cop for coffee; a place where your reading
material can equally include ’Music of the 20th Century,’ and the Stihl chainsaw manual; a place where you can own a truck called the Red Dink and nobody thinks that’s peculiar.
It’s a place where your neighbours jump in and help you pour the footings for your cabin, sweep your crusty chimney while you’re gone, and run in to haul your burned out airtight through the front door to save the joint from burning to the ground ... where the local cop will climb on his skidoo and spend his morning tracking you down you so you can play that forgotten gig ... and where, when you’re missing down the lake, your pal comes to the rescue in her bush plane.
The North is a place where, no matter your location, you can always snap on the radio and catch a CBC weather report:
“This is CBC Yukon, I’m Leonard Linklater and this is Midday Cafe. Around the Yukon we’ve got Haines Junction at minus 32; Atlin, Teslin and Carcross, minus 28 with 5 degrees of windchill ...”
It’s a place where the fireweed sets the bush aflame in the summer and again in the fall, where brilliant autumn colours defeat the senses, and where lakes boom like cannon shot at freezup ... a place where you get to meet large mammals - right there on your front porch.
It’s a place where you get to fly Air North - an airline that still serves a meal, always manages to find a place for your guitar in the cabin, and gives you a big warm chocolate chip cookie before you land. Where you might catch Joe Sparling in the cockpit that day - the owner of the airlinea man who still likes to fly the aircraft every now and then ... just cuz.
The North is a place where music is still played around the kitchen table, and where people continue to tell tales and laugh ... and laugh ... and laugh.
•••
Musician and bush rat is an unlikely combination, and I often wondered whether I was just being cheeky in thinking there might be somewhere those two passions could coexist. As it turned out, the little town of Atlin B.C. was the perfect place at the perfect time. How I ended up in this privileged position is beyond me. Somebody though, I am guessing, has been driving the cosmic bus this whole time.
This has been, and continues to be, one hell of a journey, and one I wouldn’t change for the world. Still, none of it would have been possible without my family and a collection of extraordinary friends. My hat then, tatty little affair that it is, is off to you.

“Whispers”
When you rise in the morning and open a window to breathe fresh air will soon embrace you. You’ll welcome in a whisper of good tidings for the day.
After being out for the day you’ll be happy to be home when your companion is there to greet you with an embrace and a whisper to treasure.
When you put children to bed and calm them with a story and some talk about their day then give a loving embrace you’ll whisper words they cherish.
Every day around the world millions whisper their prayers to ease the burdens, they face or make a heaven on earth with the help of God’s grace.
