‘Morris Gang’ dancing Go along to Blists Hill Victorian Town on Wednesday 14 July and Sunday 18 August when you can watch and join in traditional Morris Gang dancing, in addition to all the usual summer activities. The Morris Gang will be entertaining families near the Ironworks in the lower part of the town at 11.15am, 2pm and 3pm. If the sun is shining they will also be roaming the town chatting to residents and visitors alike, while over lunchtime the musicians might be found performing in the New Inn Public House. Plenty of other activities will also be taking place across the Town. Try candle-dipping in the Goods Shed, then walk through the historic streets down to The Green where the Victorian fairground will be in full swing. There will also be horse and cart rides, while the bravest visitors can take part in a lesson in the Victorian schoolhouse at noon. For further information call 01952 433424 or visit ironbridge.org.uk.

Village goes quackers Chorley village will be holding their annual duck trail on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July. This fundraising event showcases hundreds of elaborately decorated wooden ducks which are created by residents, groups and the children at Stottesdon Primary School and Nursery. The ducks are displayed along a village trail in nesting sites. As well as the trail, there will be homemade tea and cake, plants, craft stalls and other fun activities. The trail starts at the Duck Inn at 11am both days or you can also join the trail at other locations during the day. Entrance is £3 and free to all children. Brrroseley’s bikers A festival which last year attracted around 200 motorcycles of varying ages and models is set to roar into action again this year. The Broseley Festival of Motorcycling will take place in locations around the town, with support from the Blood Bike Service and Broseley Community First Responders

Farm result Planners will have to go back to the drawing board after judges quashed proposals for a poultry farm near Bridgnorth. The proposed site, in Tasley, had been the subject of a campaign by locals who were opposed to it on the basis of health and environmental issues. The court ruled that the pre-planning consent assessment of the impact on residents caused by smell and dirt following the disposal of chicken manure on nearby fields was not properly considered by Shropshire Council when it approved the plans. The Council will now reconsider the plans.

A mammoth effort Tusker the mammoth is a well-loved favourite with all who visit Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre. He has been greeting visitors from the front of the centre for nearly 20 years and recently underwent a ‘refurr-b’ to freshen up his look after years of cuddles and pats on the head. As part of the larger summer project, local artist, Helen Worrell, has created a jaw-dropping mural of Tusker to brighten the walls of the Centre for future visitors to enjoy. Jade Marriott-Lodge, of the Centre says, “We are very proud of our Tusker portrait and we would like to thank Helen for kindly agreeing to paint him for us again. Helen is an avid supporter and volunteer of the Centre and it has been great to have her involved. We think she has captured Tusker’s character perfectly and we’re looking forward to the future projects that will fill the Centre’s walls with fun and colour.” Local artist, Helen Worrell, kindly gave her time to create the Tusker piece

And Shrewsbury Regional Transport will be joining in the fun at the British Ironwork Centre on Sunday 14 July 2019 in a nostalgic RMC red bus. Free trips will be available on a first come, first served basis throughout the day from the Ironworks to Whittington Castle and Oswestry Town Centre. Animal rescue The number of baby animals going to the experts at Shropshire’s Cuan Wildlife rescue centre is on the rise. Summer is a busy time for staff at the centre in Much Wenlock, with a constant stream of everything from foxes and hedgehogs to every variety of local bird. Fran Hill, manager at the centre, said they had already received about 80 more rescue animals than at this point last year. “The numbers are increasing every year,” she said. “There doesn't seem to be a particular species that is increasing, it's across the board.” Fran said the increasing number of baby animals being brought in may be down to the centre's increasing popularity on social media, “We have 10,000 followers on Facebook. I think people are more aware of animals around them, and hopefully we've made it very obtainable for people to call us so we can give advice.” If people find animals, they should contact the centre on 01952 728070 for advice 11

Help for Peru A Shropshire student scooped a sponsorship boost after impressing architectural design bosses during her work experience placement. Caitlin Morgan, 16, from Grinshill near Shrewsbury, a student at Wem’s Thomas Adams School, has her heart set on a career in architecture. She told Craig Marston, director of Ke-design about her plans to travel to Peru on a scheme aimed at improving living standards during her work experience with the company. Mr Marston said he was so impressed with Caitlin’s efforts, he immediately donated in sponsorship for her Peru trip, saying, “Her enthusiasm is infectious and her whole approach during her time with us was refreshing from one so young. This sort of attitude is deserving of praise and reward and I am delighted to be able to donate towards her Peru trip.” Caitlin will now be involved in a programme run by Camps International where she will help with environmental projects and installing amenities for some of the oldest civilisations on Earth.

Caitlin said, “I’m really looking forward to my trip and could be involved in building classrooms and community housing, supporting some of the oldest civilisations, the Quechua and Aymara people, with the aim of improving the standard of living. Caitlin Morgan with Craig Marston.

Star adds support Staff at The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust (SaTH) are being encouraged to sign up as ambassadors to Nursing Now, a national initiative that raises the profile and status of nurses worldwide and inspires the next generation by shining a light on the exciting breadth of careers available within the industry. Matron Clare Walsgrove said, “I have been a Matron at SaTH for nine years, and with a background across a number of clinical areas I’m passionate about inspiring the next generation of nurses.”

Full steam ahead Discover how the Victorians harnessed steam to power their engines and other machines on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August, when Blists Hill Victorian Town will be ‘in steam’. The weekend will provide a rare chance to get up close and personal with an eclectic collection of Victorian steam-powered machines, all of which will be in their full working splendour. The Town’s replica of Trevithick’s 1802 Coalbrookdale locomotive will be running; the original is believed to be the world’s first steam locomotive. Other museum engines in steam will include ‘Billy’, a fantastic 1903 Wallis & Steevens roadroller as well as a variety of special guest machines including rare ploughing engines. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke recently announced her support as a Nursing Now Ambassador, saying, “I believe strongly in the need to raise the profile and status of nursing to help improve health globally.” Nursing Now aims to enable nurses to work to their full potential and have an even greater impact on health. They will be empowered to play a greater role in prevention, promotion and health literacy and increase the provision of midwifery, child and adolescent services.

Curiosity key A Telford-based nursery chain has become the first business in Shropshire to win a national accreditation for the back to basics approach. The Curiosity Approach to pre-school education was adopted by bosses at ABC Day Nursery in Lightmoor a year ago and this week received the news, their hard work had paid off to be officially accredited. The nursery chain is the first in the county to achieve the national accreditation and one of only 14 nurseries nationwide.

Visitor numbers soar

Owner Penny Hustwick said, “The approach has really given a wonderful homely feel and atmosphere to Lightmoor. The children absolutely love playing with the real household items - nursery really has become a home away from home for them,” said Penny.

The RAF Museum has announced that its visitor figures enjoyed substantial growth on the back of a major redevelopment of its London site and a re-invigorated public events programme for the RAF Centenary at both its London and Cosford sites. The West Midlands site welcomed 444,965 visitors, a leap of 20%. RAF Cosford has a busy few months ahead, with Nimrod Tours, the popular Food Festival, and the Large Model Air Show all taking place in July and August. Commenting on this growth in visitor numbers, Maggie Appleton, CEO for the Museum said, “This growth is a fabulous response to the huge investment that the Museum made in the redevelopment of our London site in 2018 and a reflection on the public’s support for the RAF during the UK’s commemorations of the RAF Centenary. It also reflects how the Museum’s new vision of inspiring everyone with the RAF story – the people who shape it and its place in our lives – has struck a resonant chord with both our longstanding visitors and those new to the Museum. It is a very fitting tribute to the men and women who serve the RAF so valiantly today.” The Royal Air Force Museum is open daily from 10am. Admission is free at rafmuseum.org.uk.

Bridge closes A Bridgnorth advice service is closing its doors. Bridge Advice Service has been running for two years. Spokesperson Sally Everett said, “It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our service from June. There are many reasons for this closure and it was a very difficult decision to make. We’d like to thank the people of Bridgnorth for their support over these two years.”

Rifles steam on The Salop Steam Engine Society’s 2019 Rally takes place at Onslow Park Shrewsbury on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 August, and one of the highlights will be the involvement of 8 Rifles, a Light Role Infantry Reserve. Edward Goddard, chair of the County of Salop Steam Engine Society said, “We are delighted we have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. We are really excited that this will mean the local 8 Rifles Light Infantry Reserve will join us to provide an exhibitor stand and provide exciting and interesting activities for families.” This year there will be over 1,000 exhibits, including historic military vehicles, classic bikes, vintage tractors and vintage fairground organs. A fest for the imagination An unmissable new 14-day festival showcasing the amazing story of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge Gorge’s past, present and future is taking place this autumn. From trails, street entertainment, exhibitions, demonstrations and performances to workshops and expert panels, the World Heritage Festival of Imagination 2019 is set to engage, excite, challenge and entertain audiences from far and wide.

Funds for Mind Generous customers attending this year’s successful West Midlands Caravan, Motorhome and Destinations Show in Shrewsbury helped to raise more than £600 for mental health charity Shropshire Mind. Volunteers from Shropshire Mind provided teas, coffees and biscuits to customers over three successive weekends in return for receiving donations to the Shrewsburybased charity. Heather Ireland, manager of Shropshire Mind, which has been providing support and services to people affected by mental health issues since 1974, said the money raised would greatly help support the services they offer.

Taking place from Sunday 15 September, the festival will tell the story of the world-famous Gorge, its lasting impact on the world and the exciting possibilities for its future. Organised by Discover Shropshire & Telford and Telford & Wrekin Council, and funded by the Arts Council, the festival will see businesses, community groups, schools and residents come together to take part in the celebrations. For more information, visit imaginationfest.co.uk.

Shropshire Kids Festival 2019 enjoyed record figures, with 11,000 people attending the two-day event in Shrewsbury’s quarry in May. Beth Heath, Shropshire Festival’s founder, said, “Our fourth annual Kids Festival was a big success. We worked very hard to change the model this year, so all activities within the festival were free. We listened to the feedback from last year, and didn’t want parents to feel they needed to limit what their kids took part in. “Feedback from this year’s festival has been incredible, with many people commenting on the fantastic value for money with such a vast range of activities, which are suited to kids across a large age range of 0-14 and suited to a range of needs.” Parents were also impressed with the range of activities in the STEAM tent organised by students from University Centre Shrewsbury, which helped children engage with science, technology, engineering, art and maths in fun ways. Charged for features at the event raised funds for the festival’s chosen charity, the Harry Johnson Trust. The trust offers help and support to children and teenagers who receive care from the Oncology Team at The Princess Royal Hospital in Shropshire.

Simon Harris, Shropshire Council’s deputy cabinet member for transport, said, “The aim is to have easy access for all to charge their vehicles, helping people to make longer journeys and reduce the anxiety of potentially running out of power. There are around 25 charge points across the county, but these are all on private land. It’s great that there will soon be more, and at no cost to the council.” Keen to help improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions and save on costs, Shropshire Council is currently trialling a number of hybrid and fully electric vehicles within its own fleet.

Best in show! Combining all the razzmatazz of a summer festival with the rustic charm of a traditional agricultural show, the Burwarton Show, this year taking place on Thursday 1 August, is an exciting day out for the whole family. Shop for local crafts, jewellery, clothing and artworks, and visit the thriving conservation area, where you can learn the ancient art of scything, try your hand at stone masonry, learn how to fly cast around the Mill Pool or wood-turn an item to take home.

Animal magic The Livestock Field is always packed with spectators watching as exhibitors compete for the top prizes in cattle, sheep and pig breed classes. A special feature this year will be a display of the popular Valais Blacknose Sheep, as seen on television. Another popular feature is the Horse Field, where competitions for ridden and in-hand horses and ponies run throughout the day, with beautifully turned-out animals of all breeds taking part. The younger competitors in the Pony Club Inter-Club Games always appreciate the support of cheering onlookers, while the carriage driving is an impressive sight.

Fun for all The children’s play area sees the return of the Panic Family Circus while the Village Green will host a traditional Punch and Judy Show as well as welcoming Magic Russ and a range of live musicians and singers. In the main ring, the Atkinson Action Horses will have viewers on the edge of their seats with their daredevil stunts while Ray and Wendy Aliker again show off the ancient art of falconry with their elegant and powerful birds of prey. And the spectacular Aldabra Giant Tortoises, a huge hit last year, are back by popular demand again in 2019.

The Show opens at 8am at the Showground, Cleobury North WV16 6RP on the B4364 between Bridgnorth and Ludlow. Parking is free. Admission is £17 (£15 pre-book) for adults and £5 for children, with under 11s FREE. Visit burwartownshow.co.uk to buy discounted tickets online before the show. 21

Lend an ear… No-one has been saying ‘shhhh!’ to a group of Shropshire artists bringing live music and poetry to libraries across Shropshire. Bridgnorth-based acoustic trio Whalebone and poet Jean Atkin from Shrewsbury have created Understories, based on Shropshire folklore and specially written to be performed in libraries. Understories includes tales of grisly murders at Knowle Sands, a pig kept in Bridgnorth Railway Station, and rioting ironworkers near Horsehay. “It may seem strange to bring live music to a library, but it works really well and has proved popular,” says Whalebone guitarist Charlotte Watson. “Attendances have far exceeded expectations, including an audience of 95 in Bridgnorth Library.” Understories visits Church Stretton Library on Friday 12 July at 4pm, and the team are also seeking folk tales from Shropshire residents – get in touch via whalebone-music.com.

Mondays at the Edge Monday Night Cinema at Much Wenlock's Edge Arts Centre continues into July with two very different films. On 8 July, The Old Man and the Gun tells the story of an audacious prison escape by a criminal with a compelling personality, while the following week sees the visit of The Favourite, the bittersweet tale of the travails of Queen Anne, for which Olivia Coleman won her Best Actress Oscar. To find out more and to book tickets, visit edgeartscentre.com.

Musical Mr Stink David Walliams has teamed up with Sam Bradshaw Productions and Chickenshed to present a musical adaption of his bestselling book Mr Stink. This brilliantly staged musical version will be at Theatre Severn from Monday 29 to Wednesday 31 July and promises to make you laugh, cry and want to hold your nose! Jeremy Vine, tv presenter, broadcaster and journalist is joining the cast in a cameo role. Tickets can be booked at theatresevern.co.uk or call Box Office on 01743 281281. 25

If for you, summer means pumping Balearic beats and a non-stop party, you’ll love a new club-focused event landing at Weston Park this July. Classic Ibiza hits the county for the first time on Saturday 13 July, and this high-energy dance extravaganza sees scorching performances from Urban Soul Orchestra (USO), DJ Goldierocks and critically acclaimed live vocalists, as they perform some of dance music’s seminal tracks in the scenic grounds of Weston Park.

DANCE ANTHEMS Dance music A-listers USO have worked alongside the very best in the dance music industry, including Nightmares on Wax, Groove Armada, Octave One, Robert Miles and Spiller. Goldierocks is a true superstar of dance, knocking out pumping sets for A-listers such as Kate Moss, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Giorgio Armani and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY VIBES Classic Ibiza is a concert for all the family; car parking is free, and you can bring your own picnic and refreshments, or take advantage of the local street-food vendors and bars on site. The evening starts with a chill-out set so you can relax over a glass of bubbly, or dance along as the sun fades into the trees. The music gets ramped up in the second half and you’ll be transported to a magical alfresco celebration, with accompanying lasers and Balearic beats.

The set list includes the biggest and best dance anthems dating back to the 90s, including classics such as ‘Insomnia’ by Faithless, Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’ and Darude’s ‘Sandstorm’, plus a tribute to the Prodigy’s Keith Flint with a special performance of ‘Firestarter’.

Inspired performers Youth members of Brierley Hill Musical Theatre Company are ready to rock after meeting the cast of Rock of Ages at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, ahead of performing their own production of the show in July. Seven members of the company went backstage after the opening night and the cast, including Blue’s Antony Costa and Coronation Street’s Kevin Kennedy were on hand to pass on invaluable tips to the budding actors who will perform the very same roles from Thursday 18 to 20 July at Crestwood School Theatre, Kingswinford. Scott Bird of the Grand said, “The Grand Theatre strives to reach as many people as possible through the magic of theatre and any chance to involve and inspire young people is something we’re very proud to nurture and support.” Visit crestwood.co.uk for more information.

Seat for Joe! Wolverhampton Grand Theatre has honoured pop star and musical theatre favourite Joe McElderry with his own seat in its historic auditorium. Joe has returned to the Grand to star in 80’s themed musical Club Tropicana, his third time performing at the Grand, having appeared in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and the pantomime Aladdin, both in 2016. Joe said, “I’m really excited to be back in Wolverhampton. Whilst it’s my third time here, I spent the longest time when I was here for panto as Aladdin. I love the Grand and its staff, so to be recognised with my own seat is lovely and such an honour.”

Drawn of the Dead Drawn of the Dead is a new exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery which takes you on a journey through a collection of original works from The Walking Dead comic series. The blockbusting TV show, The Walking Dead, now in its ninth season, is a spin-off of the popular comic book series created by Robert Kirkman and Shropshire’s own Charlie Adlard. Charlie said, “I’m incredibly proud to have this exhibition in my home-town. And, not only is it here in Shrewsbury, but it’ll be the best exhibition of my works staged anywhere. It’s going to be a truly immersive experience.” Drawn of the Dead is open until Sunday 3 November. 31

Replica is a marvel Gerry West had been creating military scale models for years before he decided to take on his first building project, depicting what Bridgnorth Castle may have looked like during the English Civil War in 1646. Gerry explained, “No written records exist of what any of the castle looked like prior to its destruction at the end of the Civil War, so much of it is my own interpretation and from research.” Gerry used a plastic foam used for carving to make the sections of the castle, before adding detail, painting them and putting it all together. He added, “It was incredibly tricky and is the kind of thing you have to do little and often – it's been a slow process of spending hours carving stone walls with a toothpick but I'm very pleased with how it’s all turned out.” The replica is now on show at Bridgnorth Museum – visit bridgnorthmuseum.org.uk for more information. Legal Life Graham Fuller, Senior Associate at FBC Manby Bowdler

Planning ahead Discussing later-life planning is a sensitive subject for many as proved in a recent survey by consumer guide Which? This revealed that 71% of people have no plans in place for the eventualities that might occur at this stage of their life. According to the research, only 29% of people had done any planning at all. Graham Fuller, a Senior Associate in FBC Many Bowlder’s Wills, Probate and Lifetime Planning team, outlines the simple measures you can take to prepare… There are several things you can do to reduce the burden on your loved ones in later life and two key steps are making Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) and having the right type of will in place. Planning ahead ensures you and your loved ones can retain control of

later life decisions including those surrounding medical and social care if there ever becomes a point when you can’t express your own wishes.

for both or different as you wish. If you choose more than one attorney, you decide whether they can act together or separately.

If you don’t take action, decisions could be taken outside of the control of your loved ones and that are not in accordance with your wishes.

If you are concerned about care fees, having the right type of will in place is a priority. Without advance planning, your assets may be used to pay for your care instead of passing to your loved ones.

If you don’t take action, decisions could be taken outside of the control of your loved ones and that are not in accordance with your wishes...

Couples are in a unique position to protect their assets from care fees by making an asset protection will that could shelter half your assets from being used to fund health or social care.

One thing you can do is draw up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). If you don’t have an LPA, decisions about your finances would pass to the Court of Protection and social services or medical professionals would make medical and care decisions, leaving your family with no legal say. There are two different types of LPA – one for property and financial affairs and the other for health and welfare. Attorneys can be the same

Above all, there is one simple message to remember – taking advice from a legal professional will enable you to make informed decisions that will help you and your loved ones stay in control.

Graham deals with a broad range of matters including wills, powers of attorney, care fees, tax planning and probate. He is a full member of the Society of Estate Practitioners and Solicitors for the Elderly and is currently studying to become a member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate solicitors.

Sue Mitchell, a member of Exhibition 2019 said, “We are delighted to welcome Claire Carter, landscape photographer, as our guest artist this year. Claire is based in Shropshire but her passion for landscape photography has taken her far and wide including Norway, Iceland, Patagonia and Poland. Her display will include works from these diverse locations and the Shropshire Hills.” For more information contact Sue Mitchell at exhibition@strettonfestival.co.uk or 01694 722015 or 07763 985707.

Angel takes Pride Shropshire’s Knife Angel has once again attracted crowds – this time at Birmingham’s Pride parade, which took place over the May Bank Holiday. The sculpture, which was created at the British Ironwork Centre by sculptor Alfie Bradley to highlight the impact knife crime has on society, involved the collaboration of every police force, the Home Office, anti-violence groups, and families affected by knife crime. Government figures recently showed knife crime in the West Midlands rose by 17% between 2017 and 2018. Birmingham Pride parade saw over 100,000 people take part, and the Knife Angel was lit up in rainbow colours for the event. The 30-foot sculpture will now move on to Derby as part of its ongoing national tour.

Find your way… Join Ordnance Survey enthusiast Helen Wood for a humorous exploration of the much-loved, fold-out, paper map. This Edinburgh Fringe sell-out show takes a fascinating, laughter-filled, virtual ramble and celebrates the simple beauty of Britain’s inspiring national treasure. Helen introduces key characters from Ordnance Survey history, grapples with a selection of rambling gadgets and shares out the Kendal Mint Cake. She co-wrote and performed, as Levick and Wood, in the sell-out comedy, ‘The Usherettes’. This was followed in 2016 by Helen’s first solo comedy show, ‘What Kind of Fool am I?’ Helen said, “During the show I take the audience on a virtual ramble, along the ancient byways of the no. 168, 4cm to 1km, Explorer map. On our ‘walk’ together we meet colourful characters, hear amusing anecdotes and pause frequently to admire the view.” You can see Helen on Saturday 6 July at 7.30pm at Playhouse Cinema, Leominster. Inn crowd ‘Down the Pub’ with Luke Wright has been described as flamboyant, political and riotously funny. Part Essex wide boy, part dandy fop, Luke writes from the sidelines about small-town tragedies and national farce, then performs his work with snarl and spit. Luke has written and performed nine spoken word shows and two verse plays, touring them to top literary and arts festivals. He formed the poetry collective, Aisle16, with Ross Sutherland in 2000, which was commissioned by Candida Lycett Green to commemorate the centenary of her father, John Betjeman's birth which was later made into a film. Join Luke on Friday 12 July, 7.30pm at Clungunford Village Hall. Visit artsalive.co.uk for details.

Success in Cornwall Much Wenlock Male Voice Choir rounded off their 50th anniversary celebrations with a tour of Cornwall, taking part in the Cornwall International Male Choirs Festival. This event attracted more than 60 choirs from across Britain and beyond in what has become the largest celebration of male choir voices in the world. Much Wenlock were delighted to perform alongside choirs from Russia and Lithuania as well as from Scotland, Wales and other areas of England, in two evening concerts on the wonderful Cornish coast. Particularly memorable were the daytime concerts at Trebah Gardens and also the world-famous Eden Project where they were ably accompanied by the local bird population! A video of the choir singing at Eden can be found on their Facebook page. If you’d like to join the choir as they move into their 51st year, call 01952 728758 for further details.

Cathedral composition A former Abraham Darby pupil and Shropshire Music Service musician has gained national recognition for a choral composition she has created. Karen Kirkland, devised the choral piece ‘A Peace Blessing’ for the One Day One Choir project at Birmingham Symphony Hall. The composition is now being used for a massed choir performance at Belfast Cathedral. Belfast Cathedral’s musical outreach project with primary schools in areas of deprivation and division includes an annual Choir of the Year competition. This year, after the schools have completed their own choice of works, they will join together to sing Karen’s composition. “I’m very excited that they’ve chosen to perform my choral work to support such a fantastic project,” said Karen.

The Adventures of Maud West, Lady Detective By Susannah Stapleton (Pan Macmillan, £20 in hardback) In my 30 years of bookselling I’ve had two major bestsellers: The Morville Hours by Katherine Swift and, of course, Harry Potter. I’m pleased to say The Morville Hours outsold good old HP by several hundred copies; testament to the quality of Katherine’s writing and the excellent taste of my customers. Now, though, I recommend a book that may well outdo those success stories: make way for Maud West!

Exhibition returns The Bridgnorth and District Arts Society’s annual exhibition themed ‘Art Among the Pews’ opens at St Leonard’s Church this summer. Entry to the exhibition is free of charge, with many of the works available for purchase. Anyone interested in joining or exhibiting can check out the details via the bridgnorthartssociety Facebook page.

The Adventures of Maud West, Lady Detective: Secrets and Lies in the Golden Age of Crime is the first book by Susannah Stapleton, known to us as Susie, and yes, I do admit to bias as Susie worked in the shop with me for many years before penning this masterpiece. I’m not a huge fan of history, true crime, memoirs, or ‘cosy crime’... so reading the advance copy of Susie’s book was slightly daunting – would I like it? Would I ‘get’ it? Would I even care about Maud? The answer was a huge ‘YES’ as I quickly realised this book is actually in the most important genre of all – the genre of ‘amazingly skillful writing’ and of course, if a book falls into this genre, it really doesn’t matter what it’s about because reading it will always be a joy. Maud West was full of contradictions and inconsistencies, yet she nevertheless carved a life for herself that confounded expectations and pushed boundaries. Susie takes on the detective role herself as she investigates Maud’s very hidden life against a backdrop of social history both glamorous and seedy. Questioning every aspect of Maud’s life, Susie finds a woman who had ‘taken the hand she’d been dealt at birth and transformed it into a life that would be the envy of millions. She was bad-tempered and sharp and tender and kind… She was determined to have it all – and she almost succeeded...’ I hadn’t expected this to be a page-turner, but I read it in a couple of sittings, desperate to know what Susie was going to find out next – you will too! It’s on sale at Wenlock Books; just ask us if you’d like a signed copy.

Books

A popular Shropshire bookshop sold its final Penguin ahead of closing its doors in June. Wenlock Books, which has been on Much Wenlock High Street for over 30 years, has felt increasing pressure as customers turn to online sources for their books.

The cosy, atmospheric store has also hosted Anna’s annual Christmas Eve reading, a magical gathering of children to hear the classic poem ‘A Visit from St Nicholas’, or ‘The Night Before Christmas’. Anna will still be writing her popular book reviews for What’s What! – but the town and surrounding areas will surely be a poorer place without Wenlock Books. 44

Running the shop has been a blast”, says Anna. "I've drunk champagne with the Queen, I've hobnobbed with Laureates... I've been on Woman's Hour and on the telly... I've nurtured my staff... and built the most amazing relationships with so many of my customers...!

Owner Anna Dreda has run the shop since 2003, having previously worked there. She has been a huge part of the creative community of the town and county, hosting literary and musical events, and initiating the Wenlock Poetry Festival, which has attracted literary luminaries such as Andrew Motion and patron Carol Ann Duffy.

As a young writer moving to Shropshire, Anna Dreda and Wenlock Books were a beacon of creativity and a hub of support. Her enthusing of books, literature, readers and authors will be sorely missed. - Andrew Fusek Peters, photographer and author

It’s a rare thing, but Anna has a genuine calling. Her love of books, of language and poetry, of the soul-enhancing pleasure of reading, goes deep to her core. Already, with the bookshop closing, she is planning more readers’ retreats, poetry events, discussion groups, and who knows what else! She can’t help herself, and it’s that genuine passion – and her desire to share it – that has made Wenlock Books such a magical place over the years. - Susie Stapleton, author and former Wenlock Books bookseller

LOCAL ARTS

As a would-be local writer, I always aspired to having a novel on the shelves of Wenlock Books because Anna had created a place renowned for both creativity and quality. And Anna’s support provided not only encouragement, but also the kind of practical help that made all the difference to a new author trying to understand the book business. Without Wenlock Books, the Shropshire literary community would not have become so vibrant, far-reaching and diverse. The legacy is powerful! Thank you Anna!

Students raise vital funds A group of Y10 students from Wolverhampton Grammar School have run the famous Wainwright Coast2Coast route of 187 miles from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay as a tag team in just 23 hours and 6 minutes to raise vital funds for the charity Sparks. The school has run an annual Coast2Coast challenge for over 20 years. In preparation for their challenge, the students have undertaken 16 weeks of extreme training. Each year the event raises thousands of pounds for a charity, chosen by the students taking part. For 2019, the students decided to support Sparks: a charity funding groundbreaking research into a wide range of conditions affecting children. Dementia Friends Pupils at The Royal School have become Dementia Friends as part of a pilot scheme to raise awareness with children and young people in Wolverhampton. Wolverhampton Dementia Action Alliance launched the pilot program earlier this year and eventually hopes to enable schools and youth groups in the city to hold sessions of their own. Around 150 Y3 and 4 pupils became Dementia Friends, and Royal School primary head Mark Mitchell said, “Ensuring children grow up being able to relate to society as a whole is a key component to our educational provision. Many families at the school will have personal experience of dealing with dementia and so we need to resource the children to appreciate the difficulties that it brings, to be confident to speak about it and to remove the stigma that can be associated with it.” Karen said, “It was so heartening to see how insightful and kind the children are. We would love to deliver some more sessions especially in secondary schools so if you are interested, please call 01902 555344.” Anyone can become a Dementia Friend by visiting dementiafriends. org.uk. Royal School Dementia Friends Y4 pupils Sienna Chahal and Roman Dodd with Dementia Champion Karen Perry and Dementia Friend Ann Bickley

Marvellous Montana Y6 children from St Leonard’s CE Primary in Bridgnorth were among those who entered this year’s Shrewsbury Bookfest Creative Writing competition. Each entrant wrote a story following a visit from children’s author Jo Cotterill. From over 1,500 entries, eight winners were selected, and Dame Jacqueline Wilson led a prize-giving ceremony at a public event in Shrewsbury on Saturday 4 May. Montana Malin of St Leonards’ won third prize with her highly acclaimed story entitled Bully. Jane Payton – Trustee of Shrewsbury Bookfest and previously head teacher of St John’s Catholic Primary School, said, “The judging was not an easy task. Every child that entered showed tremendous creativity. The quality of writing and presentation of the entries was amazing. All the books were a pleasure to read.” Montana with Dame Jacqueline Wilson

Brown Clee buddies A Shropshire school has teamed up with their local care home. Each week four pupils from Brown Clee CE Primary School in Ditton Priors visit the home and share stories, sing songs, play games, do puzzles or just enjoy a chat with the residents. “The children have developed increased confidence and self-management skills and the residents experiencing an increase in social interaction and reduced isolation. It was wonderful to see all the smiles on the residents’ faces and hear them joining in with the songs. The children really enjoyed it too!” said headteacher, Sue Relph. 47

Centre stage for Arabella Tettenhall College student Arabella Yardley has been accepted into the National Youth Theatre. Earlier in the year Arabella auditioned for the British Music Theatre and was offered a place in one of their summer productions at the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth. It was following this achievement that Arabella was offered a place in the prestigious theatre which boasts such luminaries as Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Idris Elba, Colin Firth, Derek Jacobi, Ben Kingsley, Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet to name but a few. Arabella’s proud mum said, “This is not only a testament to her own efforts and determination, but a reflection upon the first rate facilities and education offered by the dedicated and first rate teachers at the school.”

Golden awards! A level students from Shrewsbury Colleges Group recently collected their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Buckingham Palace. Eight former students from SCG received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards from Paralympian and TV presenter, Sean Rose, after Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, heard many of the success stories. Henry Tay, Carl Evans, Jessica Clarkson, Thomas Gould, Ifan George, Gregor Barker, Robbie Jowett and Thomas Emery were the former SCG students that earned their trip to Buckingham Palace – one of the largest groups the college has had attend. Speaking of his DofE experience Gregor Baker said, “I decided to do the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award because it is a great achievement to put on your CV and helps you stand out to future employers – also my Dad completed his Gold DofE many years ago and I thought it would be fun to do the same.” L to R: Gregor Barker, Jessica Clarkson, Thomas Emery with Sean Rose

The school welcomed students from across the North West: Manchester High School, Denstone College Staffordshire, Loreto Grammar School Cheshire and Altrincham Grammar School, but Moreton’s home-grown talent prevailed with year 9 student Georgia Thomas being awarded first place. Georgia will now go on to act on a West End stage in London. Drama teacher Michael Jenkins said: “This competition provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their talents and their love of performing in front of a live audience. It's been thoroughly enjoyable preparing the students for their performances. They have developed in each coaching session and I’m extremely proud of Georgia.”

A cut above Hairdressing students of Shrewsbury Colleges Group revealed their formidable talents at the college’s Annual Hair Competition which took place in May.

Freya strikes gold Ellesmere College’s Freya Anderson struck gold at this year’s British Swimming Championships winning the Women’s 200m Freestyle in a thrilling first night of competition. Adding a Bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle on Day 3, she then went on to retain her 100m Freestyle title. With a time of 53.79 seconds – a fraction shy of her all-time best – Freya retained her 2018 title which made her a double British Champion in 2019. A remarkable performance from an 18-year old who has blossomed on the international sporting scene in the past 12 months. Commenting on Freya’s performance, Alan Bircher, director of swimming at Ellesmere College, said, “Freya did well in retaining her 100m Freestyle title and then adding the 200m Freestyle title. The 200 is something we’ve been working hard on.”

The competition was judged by industry professionals, including Tom Wheeler of haircare product manufacturer Affinage, who commented on the afternoon’s events in enthusiastic fashion saying, “It is great to see the kind of hairdressing talent that will shape the future generation.” Jess Smith, studying Level 3 Advanced Hairdressing, who won for her Bee concept said, “I never thought I’d win – I can’t stop smiling. I love the colour palette that you associate with bees.” The group is welcoming interested people to an open event on Friday 5 July. For information call 01743 342333 or visit scg.ac.uk.

RECIPE

Outdoor Cooking The River Cottage library of simple recipes that use the best of British produce, continues to expand, with the latest handbook, Outdoor Cooking, now available. In it, Gill Meller explains every aspect of cooking in the open, from building the perfect fire to making the most of your barbie. There are also pizza oven recipes – and even tips on spit-roasting meat over a live flame. With an introduction by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, this beautifully photographed book will spark new ideas for creative cooking in the wild. River Cottage Outdoor Cooking by Gill Meller (Bloomsbury Absolute, £26). Images courtesy of Kris Kirkham.

Fire-roast mackerel with aubergine and tomatoes

Ingredients (serves 4) • 4 good-sized, super-fresh mackerel, gutted and cleaned • 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 sprigs rosemary • 250g large, ripe tomatoes, halved • 2 medium aubergines • 2 garlic cloves, peeled, grated • 1 tbsp tahini (sesame seed paste) • pinch of dried chilli flakes • handful of basil leaves, chopped • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Mackerel skin crisps beautifully while underneath the oily flesh stays moist and tender. The fresher the mackerel, the more delicate and delicious its flavour will be, so select fish with nice bright eyes and vibrant, colourful skin. Method 1. Prepare your fire or barbecue. When the fire is hot, set a grill over it, making sure it’s clean so your fish is less likely to stick to the bars. You’ll know the temperature is right when you can hover your hand above the grill for a maximum of 3 seconds. 2. Lay fish on a board and, using a sharp knife, cut several shallow slash marks on both sides. Trickle over 1 tbsp olive oil, and rub in salt and pepper, getting right into the slash marks. Place rosemary in each fish cavity. Set fish on grill. Season tomatoes. Place, cut side up, next to fish. Place aubergines (uncut) on grill. 68

3. Turn aubergines every few minutes, to ensure they cook evenly. The fish will take 6–8 minutes on each side, depending on size. Don’t worry if the skin tears. Once mackerel are cooked, remove and keep warm. Turn tomatoes after 10–15 minutes and keep cooking until they are soft and caramelized. Remove them to a plate. 4. When aubergines are soft (this will take about 20 minutes), slit open and scoop the soft flesh out into a bowl. Add the garlic, tahini, chilli flakes, basil, extra virgin olive oil and some salt and pepper. Mix and mash the aubergine with the seasonings. 5. Divide aubergine purée between four plates. Add tomatoes and fish. Serve.

RECIPE

Baked peaches with vanilla, butter, thyme and brown sugar

Ingredients (serves 4) • 4 ripe peaches, halved, stoned • 50g unsalted butter, softened • 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways • 2 tbsp soft brown sugar • grated zest of ½ lemon • 4 sprigs thyme • Cream, to serve (optional)

This wonderful late-summer dessert is easy to assemble and incredibly delicious. It’s the perfect thing to cook as the flames die back and you are left with a nice bed of chunky embers. Apples or plums are equally good.

Method 1. Prepare your fire or barbecue and let it die back a bit. You want a nice bed of moderately hot embers – a little flaming wood and smoke is fine. 2. Lay peach halves, cut side up, on a double layer of foil, large enough to encase them in a parcel. 3. Put butter in a bowl. Scrape vanilla seeds from the pod and add, along with sugar and zest; mix well. Dot a little butter on each peach half. Top with thyme and throw in pod for good measure. Fold foil over peaches to create a sealed parcel.

4. Set parcel carefully down in embers. The peaches need to be cooked in a gentle, glowing heat, so don’t let them come into contact with any super-hot embers. Bake for 20–25 minutes, rotating parcel occasionally to ensure peaches cook evenly. 5. Remove parcel, open it and check if tender by prodding it with a knife. If not quite ready, rewrap and return to fire for a little longer. Once tender, serve hot, with all the buttery sweet juices, and cream, if desired.

Barbecued courgettes

with dill, goat’s cheese, mint and yoghurt Courgettes cook beautifully over fire. The heat chars their surfaces and the smoke gives them a wonderful savoury depth.

Method 1. Prepare your fire or barbecue. You want a glowing bed of embers with no real flames to speak of. Set a grill over the fire; it will have reached the right temperature when you can hover your hand above it for no more than 3 seconds. 2. Top and tail courgettes and slice lengthways into strips, 3–4mm thick. Place in a large bowl and season. Add 2 tbsp olive oil along with zest, chilli and fennel seeds. Tumble together. 3. Lay courgettes across the grill. Cook 8–12 minutes on each side, or until lightly and evenly charred, with some caramelisation. 4. Meanwhile, combine remaining 2 tbsp olive oil with yoghurt and crumble in goat’s cheese. Add garlic and half dill and mint. Season and mix well to combine. 5. Arrange grilled courgettes over a large platter. Squeeze over lemon juice. Spoon on goat’s cheese dressing. Scatter remaining herbs to serve.

Ingredients (serves 4 as a starter) • 4–6 medium courgettes • 4 tbsp olive oil • grated zest and juice of 1 lemon • ½ tsp dried chilli flakes • 2 tsp fennel seeds, toasted and crushed • 3 tbsp natural yoghurt • 150g soft goat’s or ewe’s cheese • ½ small garlic clove, peeled and grated • small bunch of chives, thinly sliced • 6–8 sprigs of dill, chopped, plus extra to garnish • 2 tbsp chopped mint, plus whole leaves to garnish 69

Cup winners A ground-breaking deposit coffee cup scheme has already led to a 50 per cent reduction in single-use plastic cups being used in participating cafes in Shrewsbury and more retailers are joining the scheme, including Marks & Spencer. Organisers behind the Shrewsbury Cup say they are delighted the national retailer has agreed to join the campaign. Customers paying a £1 deposit to use a Shrewsbury Cup instead of a disposable can then return it and reclaim their deposit. Independent cafes have reported a positive response since the launch at the start of April with some seeing a reduction of more than 50% of single use plastic cups. Alison Thomas, of the Shrewsbury Cup CIC said, “We’ve been really pleased with the take-up, both from businesses and their customers. About 150,000 single-use cups are thrown away every year in Shrewsbury, and we want to cut that number drastically”. For more information visit shrewsburycup.co.uk.

Cooking it up at Newport The top chefs lined up for this year’s Newport Show have said how excited they are to thrill the crowds with culinary delights at the event this summer. The show, at Chetwynd Deer Park, on Saturday 13 July, promises to be a real gourmet occasion with demonstrations from regular television favourite Cyrus Todiwala and Shropshire-based celebrity chefs James Sherwin and Stuart Collins. All three exceptional chefs are appearing at the show for the first time. James Sherwin, a former MasterChef contestant who has also appeared on Channel 4 programme The Taste, owns Wild Shropshire, a terroir-based restaurant at Tern Hill near Market Drayton. He said, “I have been eager to appear at the show for the last couple of years as it’s such a popular show with a great reputation.” Tickets can be bought online at newportshow.co.uk

Food waste recycling Residents in Telford and Wrekin will soon be able to recycle their leftovers and kitchen waste with the introduction of a new weekly food waste kerbside collection service. The free service starts in September and means that householders across the borough will have a service dedicated to food waste for the first time. Waste that is collected will be converted into energy and fertiliser. Each household will be given a kitchen caddy for their food waste, which comes with a supply of free biodegradable liners, as well as a larger outdoor caddy which can be presented at the kerbside every week. Similar food services across the country have proved popular and have led to increases in recycling rates. Householders can expect to have their new food caddies delivered from the middle of August onwards. For more info visit telford.gov.uk/recyclefood 71

If you like street food, live music and a cocktail or two, you’ll love the Cosford Food Festival. Hitting RAF Museum Cosford on Saturday 20-21 July, the event will be packed with more artisan food and drink than ever before from some of the region’s award-winning producers. This year’s line-up includes Canoodle serving Pan Asian cuisine, and Sticky Beaks, who specialise in slow-roasted meats; the hugely popular Street Souvlaki will be back with their Greek barbecue along with Baked in Brick serving their chicken tikka wraps cooked on the bonnet of a red mini. You can wash your lunch down with a glass of fizz from the Proseccart, a little tipple from the Gin Jamboree or perhaps one of Beetle Juice’s summer cocktails, as you sit back and enjoy the festival entertainment. There are also demo stages and kids’ cookery classes. Find details and buy tickets at rafmuseum.org/cosford or follow on Facebook @CosfordFoodFestival

Wood’s Brewery have produced Wood White, a cloudy Belgian white beer, to support the butterfly of the same name, which has declined by 88% in the UK since the 1970s. The Wood White butterfly can be found at just 50 sites across the country, with nearly half of these in the West Midlands, and sales from the new beer will help fund future conservation work for the species across the region. Co-owner at Wood’s Stephen O’Neill said, “We are proud to be part of such an important local conservation project. Preserving our region’s environment and working with our local community is integral to what we stand for.” 73

GARDENING TIPS

Good Gardening Tips for July & August

The (veg) plot thickens… With the weather as much of a mystery as ever, Ann Winwood suggests some ways to get the best from your garden – with regular watering a key factor.

Hopefully as we progress through the warmer months the weather will settle down. After being warm, then cold then warm again during May, plants could do with a settled period of sunshine – hopefully with some rain at night, too. As we move into July and August, there’s still time to plant larger pots of geraniums, fuchsias, cosmos and dahlias to fill in any gaps in borders. Water to get established and feed on a weekly basis. Dead-head regularly and you’ll have colour through to the first autumn frosts… which hopefully will be late starting.

Feeding frenzy Hanging baskets need liquid feeding weekly – even with slow-release fertilizers added to composts, you’ll see the extra benefits from liquid feed. Baskets soon dry out, especially when they’re sheltered from rain at the side of a house, so watering morning and night in very warm weather is a must. Tomatoes and cucumbers need water regularly during hot weather – preferably in the 78

morning; this keeps the atmosphere humid and prevents plants staying damp overnight which can cause problems with powdery mildew or botrytis – this is especially true for cucumbers as they can be very susceptible to mildew. Remove any badly infected leaves. Good growing conditions will help to prevent the spread – good light levels, low humidity particularly at night and the use of resistant varieties. There are no chemical controls for diseases on fruit and veg available so good husbandry is very important.

Salad days Keep sowing or planting salad crops such as lettuce, spinach, spring onions and radish in the veg plot to get a continuous harvest. Use very fine netting to cover cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other particularly susceptible vegetables against flies, pigeons and butterflies. Harvest peas and runner beans regularly while they are young and tender; freeze any spares for home-grown vegetables during the winter months. Keep beans and peas moist, and spray over foliage to encourage pods to set.

GARDENING TIPS There’s plenty of choice in the herbaceous sections at the moment; as well as the ever-popular Lupins – especially the newer West Country range – there’s the salvias, Hot Lips being a good one, delphiniums and the butterfly-loving verbena bonanariensis. Hostas are good for a shady spot with their coloured foliage; watch out for slugs though, especially if the ground is damp.

Keep sowing or planting salad crops such as lettuce, spinach, spring onions and radish in the veg patch to get a continuous harvest… Keep roses in good condition by spraying every 10 days with Roseclear or Multirose; this will keep any aphids under control as well as dealing with powdery mildew and black spot. Woolly aphid is a pest of fruit trees that is getting more and more common. It appears as fluffy white cotton wool like patches on fruit tree stems and ornamental trees. The insect is hidden under the fluff and sucks the sap from stems. Use Provado Ultimate Fruit and Vegetable

Bug Killer as a control, but follow the directions as there is a minimum harvest interval.

Perky pools Now’s a good time to add plants to your pond. There’s a good selection of marginal and deep-water plants available. Keep marginals on a ledge at the edges of the pool and not too deep – iris, caltha, primulas and bulrushes are all good examples. For the middle/deeper parts of your pool, water lilies are good and can give protection to any fish you have. Most plants come ready-planted in aquatic pots so just need placing straight into the pool. Don’t forget marginals need not be planted in the pool – iris, primulas and lobelias will all grow happily in a boggy area. There’s still time to treat moss on lawns with MO Bacter if the weather is not too dry. For moss and weed control, use Evergreen Complete. For smaller areas of moss try the new Bio Press from the same supplier, which can be watered onto the lawn.

For new potatoes in October, or at Christmas, plant seed potatoes in tubs in July and August. Growth will finish in October; leave the tubers in their pots until required for cooking. Remember they’ll need frost protection once the winter frosts appear in November and December. To complete another gardening cycle – or start a new one depending on how you look at it! – the spring-flowering bulbs will be appearing in garden centres from the end of August. If you want hyacinths in flower for Christmas, they must be planted and put into a dark cool place in September. Most varieties require an 8-10 week cool period followed by two or three weeks of warmer conditions to bring them into flower. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet. Happy gardening!

Installation for David The life of David Austin was remembered by the Royal Horticultural Society at Chelsea this year. Set around the central monument within the Great Pavilion and adjacent to this year’s Secret Garden themed main exhibit, a floral display reflected Mr Austin’s contribution to the world of horticulture and his lifelong passion for roses. This is the first year the Albrighton-based company took part in the show without its founder, who was affectionately known as ‘Mr A’. He was credited with developing what is now known as the English Rose and bred more than 240 different varieties during his 75-year career. Last year the company won its 24th gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show. Mr Austin died at his home in Albrighton in December last year, at the age of 92

Garden trail This year’s Much Wenlock garden trail, in aid of Shropshire Historic Churches Trust (SHCT) and Holy Trinity Church, will be on Sunday 7 July from 11am to 5pm. The well-known town trail of hidden garden gems, large and small, formal, cottage and modern is always eagerly awaited. A good deal of hard work goes into preparing the gardens and everyone gets a lot of pleasure visiting them and getting new ideas.

Blooming good year for bluebells The blankets of bluebells at National Trust’s Dudmaston near Bridgnorth have thrived this year thanks to a programme of sensitive woodland management. National Trust Area Ranger Mike Annis said, “Wide sunny pathways in the woodland, known as rides, are perfect habitats for butterflies, bees and wildflowers, including the bluebell. Our programme of woodland maintenance is improving biodiversity in the dingle by allowing more natural light to reach the woodland floor.”

Refreshments will be available at Willow House and the church. For details contact Richard or Sally Bifield on 01952 727286.

WILDLIFE DIARY

Here be dragons! In this issue, Ed Andrews gets to grip with a special species of dragonfly.

The biggest insect that ever existed was called a griffin fly. They existed around 300 million years ago and had a wingspan of over 2.5 feet. They bore a close resemblance to dragonflies, to which they were related. Both have sharp mouthparts and are formidable air-borne predators. Griffin flies are, of course, now extinct, but the dramatic aerial antics of their dragonfly ancestors can be seen along our riverbanks throughout the summer months. Dragonflies have four wings, each capable of independent movement. This allows them to hover, swoop forwards and backwards and even fly straight up or down. In this issue I’m celebrating a very special species of dragonfly.

The rare club-tailed dragonfly

The source of the Severn is high in the Welsh hills. Up here the river tumbles down steep hillsides. Like a great serpent, it begins to swallow smaller streams and rivers, and the Severn grows. By the time it reaches Shropshire, the river has started to meander. An aerial photograph taken over Severn Valley Country Park highlights the curving shape of the river. The flow of water on the inside of a meander bend is slower than on the outside. This means that silt is deposited. The larvae of club-tailed dragonfly require silty rivers in which to live.

The club-tailed dragonfly has yellow and black markings and a swollen tip to the abdomen. It is found on fewer than 10 rivers in the UK. The stretch of river that flows through Severn Valley Country Park is one of the best places to see this rare insect, whose flight period is between May and July.

Comfrey colours One of the most common plant species on the river bank is comfrey. On sunny days I watch bees lazily drinking from the chalk-blue, bell-shaped flowers as the Severn drifts past. Dissolved in the water is fine soil that has been washed from fields and ditches. The shades of colour reflected in the water surface indicate the silt loading it carries. The silt only becomes truly visible when it coats the hairy comfrey leaves during times of high water. At the start of summer, the comfrey leaves are still adorned with this fine covering of silt. The earthy smell of silt hangs in the warm air. 86

Landscape changes The Severn valley between Bewdley and Bridgnorth was once a vast rambling wild wood. Most of the trees have now been cleared and the wild wood exists only as broken fragments. The adult club-tailed dragonfly tends to spend time hunting amongst the canopy of riverside woodland. Once mating has taken place, the female insect returns to the river to lay her eggs in the water. The species therefore needs woodland cover in close proximity to a deep and silty stretch of river. I follow a tributary of the Severn as it flows between alder trees and widens into rush-fringed pools. I don my wellies and begin exploring the underwater habitat. Plunging my net into the water, I find freshwater shrimps, mayfly larvae and caddisfly larvae. I spot an olive green damselfly larvae and eventually manage to find a dragonfly larvae amongst the marginal plants. They have a short body and large eyes.

Membrane mystery Just as I’m about to head home, I spot something in my net. It is a clear membrane with fleshy appendages. For a minute I’m perplexed, but then I realise I have found a cast skin of a creature that has emerged from the water. Rivers and ponds are not just breeding grounds for dragonflies; all manner of other insects also have aquatic larvae. When fully developed, dragonfly larvae crawl from the water and cling to a leaf. Their skin splits and the adult dragonfly emerges. The skin I’m holding is the ghost of a creature that was. I’ve found that the best time to see club-tailed dragonflies is during their peak emergence period in May. When the weather is warm and still, the dragonflies can appear in significant numbers. I’m not sure what it is that draws dragonfly enthusiasts from all over the UK to Severn Valley Country Park each year to try and photograph the club-tailed dragonfly. It could be the fact that they are one of the first species of dragonfly to emerge in the

summer, so can be considered a harbinger of the season, or it could be that their beauty is amplified by their rarity. It could, of course, be that it is their incredible lifecycle that makes them such a beguiling insect. This is a creature that is born in the silty depths of the river and ends up soaring elusively through the tree tops.

Do one thing for wildlife… Because Shropshire is such a stronghold for the club-tailed dragonfly, why not help to monitor the population of this beautiful insect? Each year, the British Dragonfly Survey ask volunteers to walk sections of riverbank and look for club-tailed dragonflies. For more information, visit british-dragonflies.org.uk

In each issue, WW! nature expert and Shropshire Council’s Parks and Greenspace Officer Edward Andrews looks at the changing seasons.

ANIMAL CARE

Happy Tails Q: How can I get my puppy used to people? So you’ve got a new puppy – what next? As well as basic training, socialisation is a very important step and should not be rushed or ignored.

Scratch that itch! Has your dog been scratching, head-shaking, or rubbing parts of the body on the floor or furniture recently? If so, they’re not alone. We’re now at the height of allergy season and consequently we vets are seeing a lot of itchy dogs.

Plan for the canine companion you want for the next 15 years. Do you want to travel? If so, take your dog places in the car. Enjoy eating out? Take them to pet-friendly coffee shops and pubs as soon as their inoculations are finished. You should definitely take them to grooming parlours at an early age to ensure they grow into a relaxed dog during their regular sessions. The British Kennel Club runs a Good Citizens Dog Scheme; find out more at thekennelclub.org.uk

So… why so itchy?

Q: My pet is pudgy – help!

Every dog is an individual and will have its own itch threshold. They’ll also be unique in the way they respond to exposure to certain allergens in the environment. The way to think about this is that the itch threshold is the brim of a cup and different allergens are different liquids that get poured into the cup. Certain dogs may have a food allergy or a genetic problem affecting their skin, which means that cup is already half full, so exposure to only one allergen will overfill the cup and they’ll start itching. Some dogs have to be exposed to multiple allergens or get secondary bacterial or yeast infections before they start itching.

Most pets in the UK are overweight to some degree. Obviously there are variations in size with breed, but there’s a range in which your pet should sit. You should be able to feel but not see the ribs, and most pets should have a waist.

What can be done for your itchy dog? There are multiple treatments including shampoos, ointments, sprays, foams, tablets, injections and ear drops (the ears are still part of the skin!) but a treatment plan is again an individual thing and can involve multiple treatments at once. It’s best to book an appointment or ring your vet for advice.

What can you do at home? There are certain products you can buy without a prescription that can help maintain the skin barrier so ask your vet about those. At this time of year, the allergen is most likely grass, weed, tree and pollen based. So if your dog appears to be itchier after going in a particular field or particular wooded area, try to avoid that area for a few months and walk on a pavement or track. Also, make sure your dog is up-to-date with a decent veterinary flea prevention product, because flea bites and saliva will be another allergen than can fill that hypothetical cup! John Willdig BVetMed MRCVS Bridgnorth Veterinary Centre 88

Most vet surgeries have nurse-led weight clinics where obesity can be monitored. Some pets cannot exercise due to health issues, so it’s always advisable to seek professional advice. Also, ask your groomer; we see pets on a regular basis and can let you know if your pet has gained weight since their last visit.

Footbridge a favourite The Telford Footbridge Project cleaned up at the West Midlands’ Institution of Civil Engineers Awards recently, scooping three of the top accolades. The new footbridge, linking Telford Central railway station with Telford Shopping Centre, opened to pedestrians in November last year in time for Telford’s 50th birthday celebrations. As well as the overall award, awards included the Medium Project Award the Team Achievement Award and outstanding example of a civil engineering project completed in the Midlands. David Wright, cabinet member for housing, transport and infrastructure said, “We are so proud of winning these awards and I feel they are just reward for the teams involved.”

Walker for Brian

The new modern structure with its distinctive swallows-tail lightweight roof is now a far more inviting entrance to the town and its glass panels give far reaching views. It has proved popular with residents since it first opened.

The Bridgnorth Lions recently donated to an appeal from local businessman Kevin Bellwood, to help a 5-year-old in Uganda who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. Roobarb director Kevin and his partner Marcia regularly visit Uganda, where they both volunteer at a children’s centre, housing and schooling vulnerable South Sudanese children. They met Brian last year and wanted to help raise money for a Flux Walker, which they hope will help him straighten his back and legs enabling him to walk. “We needed to raise a £1000 and were delighted when The Lions came forwarded and kick started the fund with £300. With this and several other donations from our generous customers, we were able to raise the funds needed,” reported Kevin. Kevin and Marcia have just returned from Kampala after delivering the walker to a delighted Brian!

University plans revealed A base for the University of Wolverhampton which would provide places for 1,000 students could be created in Telford, according to new plans. Telford & Wrekin Council and the university have revealed the proposed new venture which could be located overlooking one end of Southwater’s lake, next to Telford Ice Rink and the Travelodge hotel. A range of different funding and investment models are being explored for the scheme which, if the go-ahead is given, would represent one of the final pieces in the completion of the Southwater complex which has been delivered through a £250m public/private partnership. Council leader Cllr Shaun Davies said, "This could be a really important development for the borough which would further strengthen and grow the success of Southwater and Telford Centre as a regional destination.”

Protolabs the world’s fastest digital manufacturing source for custom prototypes and low-volume production parts, was one of just 201 companies across the country to be recognized by the Queen to celebrate her 93rd birthday. Bjoern Klaas, vice president and managing director of Protolabs Europe said, “The award was a huge honour for the company, and a real testament to the magnificent work of every one of our team.”

Foodie jobs Market Drayton-based Fordhall Farm are creating 20 new jobs this summer as they build new catering units in preparation for some of the UK’s busiest events. The business is gearing up for its busiest summer yet, taking its delicious offerings to Cricket World Cup matches, The Ashes at Edgbaston Stadium, RHS Hampton Court Flower Show and the Royal Welsh Show. The organic farm will be serving their own homemade burgers and sausages, alongside freshly battered fish and chips, woodfired pizza and even Yorkshire pudding wraps. Shining star Georgia Coe has been awarded a British show jumping NAF Shining Star award. Georgia aged 12 from Oldbury Wells School has only been competing with British show jumping for 18 months having already qualified for two major championships at Scope last summer and Blue Chip Championships in Hartpury this April. After finding out she was the winner of April’s award, Georgia said, “I am over the moon. I have been working so hard all winter with my pony Fairley Picador. I have another year with him and hope to qualify for the Novice and Discovery finals this summer at the British Show Jumping National Championships alongside competing for my academy team.”

Anyone for tennis? The sportsmanship of Shropshire’s U14 boy’s tennis team was highlighted as they competed in the LTA’s annual U14 county cup. Although the boys were beaten in the opening group game by home county Sussex, they then drew against Wiltshire and responded impressively to round off their weekend on the south coast by beating Cornwall. Ryan Bedwell, who captained the side, said, “I was really proud of the team because apart from their game, we received a special mention from the referee regarding our sportsmanship throughout the weekend, which is exactly what tennis is about.”

Overseas gifts Football-mad youngsters from Gambia are looking champion after kind-hearted players from AFC Bridgnorth Spartans donated their kit. Pupils from Bridgnorth’s Castlefields Primary School also donated stationery, books and £5,474 through their own fundraising to the Abooku Reading Scheme. AFC Bridgnorth Spartans fundraising officer Kelly Woodcock said, “The club was delighted to hear that the kit has already been put to good use. It’s wonderful that this sense of unity can be shared.” 92

The boys’ team featured Matthew Harris, Jacob Rogers, Shinglok So, Peter Swinnerton and Matthew Weaver.
