Westwood gets
the ‘WOW’ factor! A Wenlock couple who turned to the holiday letting business after a change of circumstance have just put a final lick of paint on their latest labour of love. Doug and Julie Lewis, who opened Wenlock Studios in 2012 when they decided to launch a new holiday letting career together, have been hard at work creating a setting for the ultimate county get-together: Westwood Lodge in picturesque Stretton Westwood. “We’ve run Wenlock Studios for nearly seven years now, but we realised that people also like to go away in larger groups,” explains Julie. “Westwood Lodge was three long years in the making, and we put our heart and soul into every detail to create a place that’s ideal for birthday parties, anniversary get-togethers and family Christmases.” And visitors to the luxury lodge can now reap the benefits of the couple’s dedication. The lodge encapsulates Shropshire’s rural beauty, marrying enviable views over rolling hills with state-of-the-art specifications in a property that’s just perfect for groups of up to 16. “We’re passionate about Shropshire, and we love the idea of providing a stylish space for large groups in the heart of our stunning hills,” says Doug. “We’ve worked really hard to create a home away from home where people can relax and have fun; where family and friends can share time together, reconnect, and completely unwind.”
The impressive outside space boasts a wood-fired hot tub, a fire bowl barbecue, and a contemporary deck that gazes over the countryside…
The lodge is kitted out with features including a log burner for cosy nights in after long walks, and a 52-inch smart TV; there’s also an Xbox One to keep the kids (and big kids!) happy, and a full-sized pool table, which means that even when the British weather does its worst, everyone will find something to occupy them. And the dining area is a compellingly convivial space where the whole party can gather and enjoy a meal. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Masterchef, Westwood Lodge’s kitchen is a cook’s dream, with a cutting-edge electric oven and hob, plus a dishwasher so no one need fear the short straw when it comes to washing up. Or, if you don’t fancy cooking, Doug and Julie have a top tip for a local caterer who can whip up a bespoke dinner to die for.
“We’re passionate about Shropshire, and we love the idea of providing a stylish space for large groups in the heart of our stunning hills…” The impressive outside space boasts a wood-fired hot tub, a fire bowl barbecue, and a contemporary deck that gazes over the countryside. And, for the four-legged members of the family, there’s even a doggy shower and a stable: “It’s a great starting point to walk or ride the Shropshire Way,” concludes Julie. “We wanted Westwood Lodge to have everything – and we really think it does.”
Westwood’s winter ‘WOW’ Doug and Julie are offering readers of What’s What! a special deal, with an introductory offer of £1,500 for a four-night mid-week stay.* Call 07980 016740 or email holidays@wenlockstudios.co.uk for details or to book online, visit www.wenlockstudios.co.uk. *until the end of May 2020 and exc. Westwood Lodge’s eight bedrooms are individually decorated in a contemporary, boutique-hotel style. Doug and Julie have used local suppliers wherever they can, supporting the county’s creative industries and delivering an experience that’s wholly Shropshire. They’ve also racked up commendable green credentials, with renewable energy used throughout, including solar panels and solar thermal panels, and a charger for electric cars; the American-made slates on the walls are made from upcycled rubber.

A long tribute
Sandra Higginson, Geoff and Hilary Boyle at the SVR's donor recognition wall
At 21 metres in length, the donation wall at the Severn Valley Railway is a spectacular recognition of thousands of contributions made to the SVR’s Helping Hands for Falling Sands appeal. The appeal has raised £397,000 towards restoring the striking Falling Sands Viaduct. The aluminium wall, installed at Highley’s Engine House, displays the names of nearly 3,000 individuals, companies and organisations, with some donors adding names of departed loved ones. John Leftwich, SVR Charitable Trust chair, paid thanks to everyone who has donated, saying, “In the short time that the wall’s been in place, people have flocked to the Engine House to see it, and the feedback has been extremely positive. This is a wonderful way for the SVR to thank everyone who got behind our campaign to recognise their contributions.” Restoration of the viaduct will begin early next year, and a programme of associated activities and educational events is already underway. Cantering to 50! Perry Riding for the Disabled (RDA) celebrated its golden anniversary in October with a vaulting competition at their Cavalier Centre site near Much Wenlock. Their winning team from the recent RDA National Championships were there to join in the festivities and the day also included a presentation by Shrewsbury Horticultural Society. The celebrations continued with a Countryside Challenge giving RDA riders the chance to test their skills by tackling a series of challenges. The weekend also saw a fundraising ride featuring Perry the mechanical horse, with participants signing up for sessions with the aim of reaching a total of 50 hours in the saddle to mirror Perry’s 50 golden years. Jane Barker, founder and trustee, said, “The Riding for the Disabled Association is an inspirational organisation. We sincerely hope this centre will grow and flourish over the years to come and who knows, perhaps the Cavalier Centre will celebrate their 50th anniversary alongside the 100th celebrations for RDA National.” For more details, go to cavaliercentre.org.

Festive friendship Together at Christmas, now in its seventh year is made up of a group of extraordinary volunteers who provide a three-course meal on Christmas Day for over 100 people from Bridgnorth and the surrounding areas. There are many ways in which you can help this year, from distributing leaflets, decorating the venue, hosting or helping with transport. Closing prayers One of Bridgnorth’s best-loved places of worship hosted its final service on Wednesday 29 September. St Leonard’s Church will no longer operate as a place of worship, as the funds required to carry out essential repairs cannot be found. The service was led by the Bishop of Hereford. The church has had an eventful history; a skirmish took place in the churchyard during the Civil War, and the building was almost hit by a bomb during WWII.
Floating heritage Ironbridge Coracle Trust has received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant for an exciting heritage project, the Ironbridge Coracle Project. This will help secure the future of the last historic coracle maker’s shed in England. There is a 300-year-old tradition of making and using coracles on the River Severn in Ironbridge, which is in danger of being lost. The grant of £333,000 will help secure the future of the coracle heritage of the Gorge through the shed of the Rogers family. “The coracle makers of Ironbridge are integral to the heritage of the area, and this important project will ensure that their stories and legacies are not lost to future generations,” said Anne Jenkins of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Dating from the 1920s, the Rogers’ family shed, situated on the bank of the Severn within the World Heritage Site of the Ironbridge Gorge, was bought by the Trust in 2017 with the help of funding from Telford & Wrekin Council’s Community Pride Fund. dd Tom Blockley Photography

Keep on truckin’ RAF Cosford is now displaying the Bedford MWC 15cwt Truck that was specially prepared to act as the bier at the funeral of Lord Trenchard, ‘Father of the Royal Air Force’, in 1956. After 50 years in storage, the truck has undergone conservation work led by volunteers from the Conservation and Engineering team. This latest addition to the collection can now be seen on display in Hangar 1, open daily from 10am. Curator Clare Carr said, “We’re delighted to add the Bedford MWC 15cwt Truck, last on display for the RAF 50th Anniversary Royal Review at RAF Abingdon in June 1968.” Conservation work did not stop there – a Lysander has been restored to former glory. The only surviving Special Duties variant of its type, WWII Westland Lysander III has undergone restoration work, including a new fabric outer skin. It now boasts the ‘No 161 Squadron Special Ops’ colour scheme, reflecting its service towards the end of the war in non-operational special transport services. Conservation Centre Manager Darren Priday said, “It’s been a real privilege to work on such a beautiful aircraft.” To see all the events taking place, visit rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/.

Bikers out for blood Broseley’s Festival of Motorcycling returned for its third year running and raised £563 for the Shropshire, Staffordshire, and Cheshire Blood Bikes, a vital rapid response charity with over three decades of service to the NHS. Bikers taking part in the ride had assembled at the Woodbridge Inn in Coalport before setting off on a route that took them through Ironbridge, Much Wenlock, and Barrow, before arriving at Broseley. Around 180 riders joined the event, with the Broseley High Street closed off and bikes parked up on either side along the entire length. The event was praised by Broseley’s Safer Neighbourhood Policing team, with a spokesman saying, “The event was very well organised, with road closures in place in Broseley and plenty of volunteers on hand to direct members of the public and the motorcyclists. All in all, it was a great event, and we are looking forward to next year’s festival.”
Super celebrations Ironbridge Gorge had a busy two weeks as around 15,000 people visited the town during the Festival of Imagination in September. It celebrated the story of the Gorge with a fiesta of film, poetry, arts, heritage crafts, live music, exhibitions, food and drink and exceptional lighting displays of the Iron Bridge. Festival goers also witnessed a moment of history as one of the iconic Ironbridge cooling towers was lit up in different colours one last time before demolition, alongside the Ironbridge itself, which was also splashed in a spectrum of colours. World Heritage representative Carolyn Healy said, “We have been able to show people that the Gorge is an exciting and innovative area that historically had a massive impact on the world, is still a centre of activity at present and could play a huge part in shaping the world again in the future. The Festival of Imagination will have a positive effect on the area for many years to come.”
In good voice Les Cherrington was recently presented with a Long Service Award for his 36 years’ service to the Shifnal and District Male Voice Choir by chair Mike Ward. Les, having just celebrated his 101st birthday, is still an active member, singing regularly and serving as the choir’s president. He’s well known locally as always having a positive attitude and being a great example of the benefits of singing in a choir. Research shows that singing acts as a general workout, improves your posture and learning new songs keeps your mind active together with the social activities. The Choir rehearses at 7.30pm on Thursday evenings at Idsall School Sports Centre and are always looking for new members. There are no auditions and you do not have to be able to read music. Glowing green Streetlights and council buildings in Telford and Wrekin are now being powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity. This decision is another step towards the Council’s commitment to ensure all its activities and operations are carbon neutral by 2030. Under the new contract, all electricity used by Telford & Wrekin Council operations, including streetlights, libraries, leisure centres and council buildings, will come from renewable sources. The move to switch to green energy came as millions around the world took to the streets to protest climate change. Councillor Carolyn Healy, cabinet member at Telford & Wrekin Council said, “By choosing a green tariff we are demonstrating our commitment to the Climate Emergency. The new tariff sends a message to the Council’s partners and the wider borough that we have decided not to utilise electricity generated from fossil fuels.”
Golden role models Every year the Alan Golden youth awards, named after a past Bridgnorth Lions member who also served as a Bridgnorth headteacher, are given to those who have done outstanding work in the community. A special awards presentation was held at the Shakespeare pub and this year’s joint winners were Holly Tyrls and Ben Twigg. Holly, head girl at Bridgnorth Endowed School, was described as a “fantastic role model” for other students and a “great ambassador” for the school. Ben was nominated for his “amazing, never give up” attitude and his support for others, despite suffering a major health issue.

Arriving on Friday 29 November with dates throughout the festive period, Steam in Lights is a 90-minute Christmas extravaganza. Lifesaving legacy Bridgnorth Community First Responders have recently installed a public access defibrillator at the town’s Castle Hall. The machine was donated by the late Tim Prior, who was well known and respected for his work with charitable causes and organisations. Before passing away earlier in the year, Tim gifted the town this lifesaving legacy, which is an invaluable piece of emergency equipment for those in need
Cliff rescue Bridgnorth’s historic railway reopened after the incident in September which saw passengers stranded in a carriage more than 30 foot up a cliff. Stuck for about an hour when the railway suffered an electrical fault, five people were dramatically rescued by the fire crew and lowered down to safety. During the rescue, a member of the fire service was strapped into a fall arrest system before climbing down to the carriages with first aid equipment and a radio. Remaining fire crew worked to release the carriage brakes and move the passengers back to the station.

Hello David! A popular local hairdresser is going it alone with a brand-new venture. Senior Hairstylist and Balayage specialist, David Hartmann will be cutting a dash at Bridgnorth salon Hello Gorgeous, providing a service for men and women that covers every aspect of the coiffuring process. David explains, “I really enjoy getting to know my clients and helping them feel confident and amazing about themselves” Although he’s still only 22, David’s passion for styling has seen him embark on an impressive range of professional courses including certificates with Wella, Regis, TIGI, and a Balayage Masterclass. Balayage is a French word that means ‘sweep’ or ‘paint’; it’s a freehand colouring technique that delivers a beautifully blended colour that takes advantage of the play of natural light… and doesn’t suffer from obvious regrowth. David explains, “I have such a passion for hair; it’s such a privilege to work with people and see their aesthetic potential realised. I’ve really enjoyed my time as assistant manager with a superb salon in Bridgnorth, but now I’m keen to strike out on my own and explore new avenues. And I’m always excited about introducing people to the beauty and versatility of balayage!” David is offering a 15% off all services for a limited time only; call for details.

Competition time Telford & Wrekin Council are looking for photographs that show the spectacular beauty of the borough’s trees during its most magical season – autumn. With an abundance of ancient semi-natural woodlands and estate trees, there are numerous places to capture the dazzling display of colour of the season. Councillor Hilda Rhodes said, “The trees in our borough help set us apart from other areas, and they really come into their own in autumn. The colours of the leaves as they get ready to fall are stunning. This is the best time to go for a stroll in one of our woodlands or parks and I am very much looking forward to see how people capture the magic of the season.” All people need to do is get out and be inspired by the changing colours of the leaves that blaze with shades of yellow, orange and red. Photos need to be shared in the Pride in Our Community Facebook Group – add the hashtag #autumntreescompetition and where the photo was taken, such as #TelfordTownPark. Deadline for entries is Friday 22 November. The winner will be awarded a tree to plant in a choice of locations for the public to enjoy.
Queen takes her throne The Bridgnorth Carnival Queen finally took her place upon the throne during the event held in September. 15 year old Oldbury Wells student, Robyn Gross has previously been a finalist in Miss Junior Teen Great Britain. The event was originally set to go ahead in June but was cancelled due to torrential rain that caused Severn Park to be completely waterlogged in the run-up to the date. The carnival committee said the rescheduled event focused on the procession, with the array of flamboyant floats taking the normal route around the town, with one change to previous years: it finished in the High Street rather than Severn Park. For information on how to enter next year’s carnival raise and funds for your cause or a local charity, email events@bridgnorthtowncouncil.gov.uk.

Green belt action Save Bridgnorth Green Belt action group celebrated as controversial plans to build on the site at Stanmore were axed. The group of volunteers are dedicated to raising awareness about the effect the development of a country park they say could have on local residents. Proposals include 850 homes to be built up until 2036, with even more earmarked to be built after 2036. Campaigners have been critical over the proposals insisting they are not needed for the town. Stanmore Consortium disagree, saying said the new housing would help meet the shortage of homes in the local area and create more jobs. Andy Howard from Friends of Stanmore Country Park said, “While it is the right and only logical decision, it is shameful that the area was proposed for development in the first plan.” To follow the progress and keep up to date with the events as they unfold, visit savebridgnorthgreenbelt.co.uk.

World record attempt Ironbridge Gorge Museums, together with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), are waiting with bated breath to have their attempt at building a bridge with the longest span from interlocking plastic bricks officially approved as a world record. The gigantic bridge stretched the length of the Museum’s Coalbrookdale site. It took two days to build, months of preparation and just under 205,000 bricks, with a span of about 16.8m and a total length of 34m it is set to beat the current record of 16.46m. Commenting on the partnership with the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Jo Barnett, Regional Director ICE West Midlands, said, “We are delighted to work with Enginuity to showcase the new model bridge with its record span. The museum welcomes children from all over the country and the hope is that the bridge will encourage more children to consider civil engineering as a profession. Civil engineers really do shape the world and touch every part of our lives. It is truly an exciting sector to be involved in.” For more details visit ironbridge.org.uk.

Living doll? Broadcast live to the Edge Arts Centre on Tuesday 10 December from the Royal Opera House, ‘Coppelia’ is a story of love, mischief and mechanical dolls. Franz and his fellow young villagers are curious about her and how she ignores them all. When Dr Coppélius goes to the local tavern, the young villagers slip into his house to introduce themselves to the strangely silent young woman – whatever could her mysterious secret be? Osbert Lancaster’s designs bring a colourful storybook world to life in this Christmas treat for the whole family. A great taboo Shelagh Delaney’s career defining play will be performed at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre from Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 November. This British classic is an exhilarating depiction of working-class life in post-war Salford. Written when she was 19, ‘A Taste of Honey’ is one of the great taboo-breaking plays of the 1950s, offering an explosive celebration of the vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in a deprived and restless world. When her mother Helen runs off with a car salesman, feisty teenager Jo takes up with Jimmy, a sailor who promises to marry her, before he heads for the seas. Art student Geoff moves in and assumes the role of surrogate parent until, misguidedly, he sends for Helen and their unconventional setup unravels. Bijan Sheibani directs Jodie Prenger, best known from her role in ‘Oliver!’, as Helen in this new production from the National Theatre. Tickets are priced from £10; to book call 01902 429212 or visit grandtheatre.co.uk.
The National Trust’s Live at the Chalet series closes its 2019 program at Carding Mill Valley with Son of Town Hall’s. The live show is three-parts concert, one-part theatre performed by Ben Parker and David Berkeley. The songs stand alone, profoundly poetic turns of phrase sung with voices so perfectly matched, it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart, and accompanied by intricately finger-picked parts played on old Gibson guitar. The show takes place on Wednesday 13 November as part of a UK tour to promote their new album.
Going for gold
Tickets for the event are on sale via the National Trust’s Carding Mill website. Visit nationaltrust.org.uk or call the ticket line on 03442 491895.

Round the garden The Shropshire Drama Company’s forthcoming production of Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy ‘Round and Round the Garden’ will be performed at Theatre Severn, from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 November. It is one of the three plays that make up Ayckbourn’s famous Norman Conquests Trilogy. Set over a weekend in July, the play centers on Annie who has arranged to go away for a respite break from looking after her bedridden mother. In order to facilitate this, her brother and his wife have agreed to take over the task during her absence. However, the question that intrigues them is whether Annie is going away solo or with a companion, possibly the local vet Tom who seems to be a regular caller. Chaos and hilarity ensue as Annie’s plans unravel, resulting in a memorable few days together… but for all the wrong reasons. Tickets are £16.50; for more details call 01743 281281 or visit theatresevern.co.uk. Members of the ‘Round and Round the Garden’ cast; image courtesy of Shaun Culliss Photography

Ruby’s new show Based on her bestselling book, Ruby Wax’s new show ‘How to Be Human’ answers every question you've ever had about evolution, thoughts, emotions, the body, addictions, relationships, sex, kids, the future and compassion. This show is the follow-up to Ruby’s sell-out shows ‘Sane New World’ and ‘Frazzled’ and incorporates what she discovered whilst writing her latest book, including finding out about how the mind works with monk Gelong Thubten and learning from neuroscientist Ash Ranpura where everything that makes us ‘us’ can be found in the brain. Ruby explained, “We can’t stop the future from arriving, no matter what drugs we’re on. But even if nearly every part of us becomes robotic, mechanical fingers crossed we’ll still have our minds. Hopefully we’ll use them for things like compassion, instead of just chasing what’s ‘better’ like a hamster on a wheel. If we can do that, we’re on the yellow brick road to happiness.” Ruby will be live at The Place on Thursday 14 November at 7.30pm, visit theplacetelford.com for more details or call the box office on 01952 382382.

Inspired to write Author Jo Jackson, from near Much Wenlock, has been celebrating the publication of her second novel Beyond the Margin in October. The book, set in Ireland and Shropshire, follows the lives of Joe and Nuala as they each battle with their own demons on the edge of society. Jo describes it as “a contemporary literary novel about a compelling story of darkness and light, trauma, loss and second chances”. Abandoned at five years old, Nuala learns that to survive you must take charge of your own destiny and learn not to care. Joe, fighting drug addiction, is on a faltering search for meaningful relationships. Jo was a nurse and midwife before becoming a family psychotherapist and worked with some of the most vulnerable people in society. Their courage and stories were the inspiration behind the characters of her book. Much Wenlock Library are hosting a book signing session on Saturday 9 November from 9.30am to 1pm where Jo will be signing copies of her book. Email jojackson589@ gmail.com for more details.

A great year for the ‘Bradeney bunch’ Residents of a Worfield care home have enjoyed another wonderfully varied year of activities and events. The beautifully situated residence offers specialist 24-hour care along with facilities including a dedicated Dementia Unit and well-appointed hair salon – but the Bradeney team also put a huge emphasis on the social side of life. What’s more, the setting is possibly the only home in the country with its own in-house rock band! Owners Les and Jane Jones, who are personally involved in every aspect of the home’s day-to-day running, understand how important it is for residents to keep their minds engaged and their bodies active. Les explains, “We make sure there’s something for everyone to look forward to, whatever their interests or personality. “A lot of our activities have a musical base – I’m a member of our hugely popular band the Bradeney Bunch – but we also get people involved with games, gardening, quizzes – you name it!”
Rock on!
Les and the Bradeney Bunch are a favourite act at the resident rock band
One themed event was a hugely popular Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
The staff at Bradeney House are keenly aware that most of their residents find it hard to go on trips as they once did – so they bring the fun to them. Themed days and evenings are based around events such as the Tour de France, Remembrance Day, Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show, with staff leading activities and helping residents get involved. They’re also open to suggestions, with residents encouraged to share ideas based on their own passions and interests. Jane says, “One thing our visitors and residents mention is our sense of community. We offer regular events all through the year to encourage social interaction, participation and the feel-good factor. We really enjoy bringing people together and showing that later life is fun – our residents love a laugh and many of them have a wicked sense of humour!”

Legal Life Margaret Rowe, Partner at FBC Manby Bowdler
How you can make sure charity begins at home It seems that people in the UK are a charitable bunch. Last year, just under £3 billion was donated to charity in wills, which is expected to rise to £3.4 billion by 2022. This figure means that 3.5 per cent of all the money left in estates is now comprised of charitable giving. There is certainly no shortage of choice when it comes to picking a charity with healthcare, animal, conservation and disability charities all getting a share. Whatever the cause you support, Margaret Rowe, a Partner in the Wills, Probate and Lifetime planning team at FBC Manby Bowdler has this advice: When writing a will, you need to decide how you will divide up your property and money. Some of your assets will be easier to put a value on, such as savings accounts and valuable items. However, other things will require an educated guess or a formal valuation.
The tax benefits of giving to charity If you plan to leave everything to your spouse, that is tax-free,
There are three different ways to gift your money to charity:
but leaving money to anyone else means your estate may be liable for inheritance tax which is charged at 40 per cent of estates with a value of over £325,0001. However, leaving money to charity can cut or remove the need for an inheritance tax bill.
Pecuniary This is the most common, and the simplest form of legacy. This is when you leave a set amount of cash to a particular beneficiary.
Specific
The only way to make sure your chosen charity benefits is by having a will properly drafted by a solicitor to ensure your wishes are carried out.
This is when you leave a specific item, perhaps some stocks or shares, a valuable item or a property to a beneficiary.
Residuary
1. Eliminate your inheritance tax bill If your total estate is worth more than £325,000, you can donate enough to bring it under this amount, meaning what’s left can be split between family without being subject to tax.
2. Reduce your inheritance tax bill Giving at least 10 per cent of your estate to charity means that inheritance tax is reduced down from 40 per cent to 36 per cent, even if the value of the remaining estate remains above £325,000.
Local, award winning legal service for you and your family
A residuary beneficiary is the person or organisation who receives the remaining balance of the estate when everything else has been paid (debts, gifts and taxes). The only way to make sure your chosen charity benefits is by having a will properly drafted by a solicitor to ensure your wishes are carried out.

Best bespoke glass A Shropshire artist is celebrating after reaching the regional finals of the Rural Business Awards. Jill Bagnall, who owns Fusing Ideas Glass based at Worthen near Shrewsbury, is the Midlands finalist for the Best Rural Creative, Artisan or Crafts Business. Jill started off as a garden designer before a shift to working with fusing glass. She launched her own business four years ago and creates a wide variety of handmade products, from bespoke coasters and tableware to unique pieces of art glass including her popular tapestry glass pieces. Jill also hosts creative glass workshops at her studio for adults, groups and more recently a workshop for youngsters which allows them to experiment with pre-treated glass. Jill said, “Creating is an amazing form of therapy. As children we play creatively throughout our childhood but as adults, we forget to take time to play and relax. Time for ourselves is so important and with our busy lives we don’t always get that chance.” To find out more about Jill’s workshops, visit fusingideas.com/workshops/.
Hormonal housewives Join Suzanne Shaw from Dancing on Ice and Emmerdale and the other ‘Hormonal Housewives’ while they blast their witty way through a catalogue of women’s bits: weight gain, weight loss, men, online shopping, sex, chocolate, wine, more chocolate… and all the other joys of being a 21st century woman! No subject is taboo and no thought too private for these girls, as the challenges of modern womanhood are sliced, diced and put to rights during this trip to the county town. That’s not all; audiences will be treated to some of the very best bits from the show’s previous tour. This is a real treat for audiences, having been described by The Stage as “the proverbial spot for the hordes of females who are hell bent on having a laugh at both their own expense and that of the male species”. The performance is at Theatre Severn on Tuesday 12 November at 7.30pm, tickets are from £27.50 – for more details visit theatresevern.co.uk.

A narrative song Originally from New York, Richard Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories and evoke entire worlds along the way. Join him as he performs pieces from his album ‘Careless’ at the Hive, Shrewsbury on Sunday 8 December. Taking up the guitar at the age of eight, Richard listened but imagined that composing a song was out of the question. After college, he headed to Europe with his guitar and while performing in the Paris Metro, he said, “I loved the acoustics in those tunnels, but only when they were empty.” Upon running out of money he entered Union Theological Seminary, where the celestial acoustics of the chapel inspired ‘On a Sea of Fleur de Lis’. Its underlying themes, transcendence and human and divine love, have continued to resonate through his subsequent work, right up to the present. Tickets to Richard’s performance are £15; visit hiveonline.org.uk.
Dear Santa Coming to Theatre Severn from Friday 13 to Tuesday 24 December, from the author of the well-loved children’s book Dear Zoo, Rod Campbell’s ‘Dear Santa’ is an ideal introduction to theatre for those aged two to seven years old. Santa is determined to deliver the most fantastic Christmas present to our little hero Sarah. But he doesn’t get it right straight away! With the help of his cheeky Elf, he finally settles on something perfect, just in time for Christmas Eve. Mumsnet reviewers said, “Magical! The length of the production is ideal, an amazing and magical family treat and a joy to watch.” All the ingredients of Rod Campbell's ingeniously simple and charming style are brought to life on stage, plus a whole lot more… with music, laughter and plenty of audience participation. Performances are at 11am and 2pm, with ticket prices starting from £13; for more details call 01743 281281 or visit theatresevern.co.uk.

With the Orlando Singers, she toured France and Prague, as well as performing with the Royal Philharmonic and ELO. Mrs Peachum’s Guide Mid Wales Opera will present ‘Mrs Peachum’s Guide to Love and Marriage’ at SpArc Theatre Bishops Castle on Saturday 23 November. MWO’s Small Stages team romps back onto stage with a radical reworking of John Gay’s 1728 ballad opera. Join Mrs Peachum, her daughter Polly and The Beggar in their bawdy, ballsy take on relationships and the relative virtues of virginity. Loyalty and love are put to the test as murder, rage and fury drive this rumbustious tragicomedy towards its conclusion. Will things really be left so unhappily, and will Polly remain true to her man and abandon her mother to the lure of London Gin? This restoration comedy is filled with as many musical twists as there are in the plot. Though the trio of characters may live in the gutter, musically they are looking to the stars… For more details visit shropshiremusictrust.co.uk or call 01952 510375.

Phoenix Dance Theatre are presenting their culturally distinctive 21st century reworking of the iconic ballet, ‘The Rite of Spring’ and ‘Left Unseen’ at the Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 November. For his first work created in the UK, Haitian-born contemporary and folklore choreographer Jeanguy Saintus re-envisions ‘The Rite of Spring’ introducing Haiti folklore and vodou in his bold approach to the near riot-causing original by Igor Stravinsky. This reworking focuses on the rituals and ceremonies practiced in the Haitian vodou religion, building towards a final climactic celebration. ‘Left Unseen’ explores inclusion and isolation and how we rely on our five senses to find our place and navigate the world. In isolation there is often stillness and silence, as well as unpredictable disturbance and chaos. The eight dancers taking part embody these different states to create an aesthetically beautiful and emotive piece of dance. For more information, visit macbirmingham.co.uk.

Book Review Milkman by Anna Burns (Faber & Faber, £8.99) Anna Burns was the right winner of the Man Booker Prize last year for this highly original novel about an 18 year old girl struggling to survive in war-torn Belfast at the height of ‘the Troubles’ - a war that lasted 38 years (at least) and the repercussions of which are still very close to the surface. The writing is spectacularly different - a sort of stream-of-consciousness, but one that crackles with wit, seethes with menace and fizzes with what feels like unexploded bombs just waiting to be detonated. Our narrator is ‘middle sister’ (no one is given a name, naming is dangerous, naming exposes one to risk and consequence) who has a ‘maybe boyfriend’, a ‘ma’ desperate to get her daughter married - to anyone of the right religion not already married and a cast of siblings that includes ‘broken-hearted’, ‘married to the wrong spouse’, ‘first sister’; brothers ‘dead’ and ‘on the run’, and irrepressibly precocious ‘wee sisters’.
Divided by love Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award, Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young WW1 soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. In a new adaption visiting Telford this November, the audience can live through that final, poignant night with Tommo. He looks back at his short but joyful past; his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. To book tickets for Tuesday 12 November at 1.30pm or 7.30pm, visit theplacetelford.com or call 01952 382382.
She is also being stalked. By Milkman. Who always knows where she is, who her boyfriend is, which bus she catches, where she runs and what she reads. The way in which Milkman gradually, invisibly, insidiously affects middle sister’s mental, physical and emotional health is articulated through her rambling and chaotic thoughts and fears. Her sense of utter aloneness in the face of who could she possibly tell, and what is there, to tell anyway? will bring back memories of the awful drip-by-drip building of tension in the Archers’ Helen and Rob story not so long ago. Add to this the backdrop of the war story - of renouncers of the state against defenders of the state, of kangaroo courts, of curfews, of balaclavas, of gun hoards and assassinations and car bombs and tarring and feathering and the reader realises, perhaps for the first time (in my case), just how awful this was. Pupil numbers are up for the fourth year running at Wellington’s Wrekin College as it unveils a new staff line-up in key academic roles. The settings welcomed 485 pupils in September, moving towards 500 in the next academic year.
Bottle tops off! British Ironwork Centre near Oswestry recently announced a new project – the National Schools Bottle Top Recycling Challenge. Schools from across the UK, including from as far afield as Northumberland, Devon and even Belfast have accepted the challenge of collecting the most bottle tops.
Head Tim Firth introduced a new teaching team at the start of the term: Tom Lintern, who joins as Head of Computing; Daryl Szwarc is the new Head of Design and Technology; and Ben Smith, will be Head of History and Politics. Meanwhile, Alison Wray, new Head of Support for Learning, joins after recently being SENCO at London’s Royal Ballet School. Mr Firth said, “These are a very able heads of department who’ve been attracted to us and will add much value and experience.”
This free project has been specifically designed to help educate children about the importance of protecting our planet while inspiring them to think both innovatively and creatively in order to help make important environmental changes. A total of six life-size mesh giraffes have been created as an attractive and colourful store for the bottle top collections. Each participating school is given the opportunity to borrow a giraffe for a month where they can fill it metal and plastic bottle tops. Each school then uses the recycled bottle tops to create something of use for their school or community, such as art projects or even footpaths. To get your school involved email; info@britishironworkcentre.co.uk or call 0800 6888386.

Wenlock’s magical Fayre For many people, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a visit to Much Wenlock Christmas Fayre, which this year takes place on Saturday 7 December. The little market town is beautiful at any time of year, but it really comes alive during the festivities of the Fayre, as the streets and the marquees on the Church Green are packed with eager shoppers, excited children, street entertainers, and creative stallholders offering a wide range of goodies. Shopping can be a tiring business, so visitors can also enjoy a variety of fortifying snacks and beverages on the Church Green, in Holy Trinity Church and around the town, as well as at the inns and restaurants who help create a festive buzz. The traditional programme starts with the World’s Tallest Town Crier, 7 ft 2 Shrewsbury resident Martin Wood, together with special guest Anna Dreda declaring the Fayre open. Throughout the day there are choirs, children’s activities and rides, brass bands and a wide range of other entertainment. The day ends with a glittering candlelit procession and the harmonious sound of the community and visitors joining together to sing carols in The Square.
Much Wenlock
Father Christmas will be meeting children at Holy Trinity Church… and this year there are a few extras, including charity Christmas card stalls and refreshments in the cosy Wenlock Pottery and an extra performance space on the Church Green. The Fayre officially starts at 10am, but many of Wenlock’s friendly shopkeepers will open their doors before then for those that want to get a head start on choosing the ideal gift. The special park and ride service is a hassle-free way to travel to the fayre, as many of the roads are closed to traffic – for full details about what to look forward to, visit www.wenlockchristmasfayre.org.uk.

dd Kinver launched woo way after discovering the powers of crystals at a retreat
a wo nd e r f ul wo o way brac e l et
With so many pressures and pulls on our time and energy, it can be hard to dr aw our focus back to ourselves. A local mum and her two daughters have started their own business, sharing their jewellery to help people gener ate their own positive approach to mindfulness – and we have THREE br acelets to give away to lucky readers!
Reiki masters Samantha, Gemma and Patsy Parr of Kinver launched woo way after discovering the powers of crystals at a retreat. Patsy explains “We were inspired by these precious crystals on a spiritual retreat with other Reiki Masters. The colours and lustre of the crystals along with the ancient hidden healing and spiritual meanings are magical, and the jewellery is personalised and handcrafted right here in the UK.” Samantha says everyone forms a different connection with the stones: “Sodalite is my favourite as it helps with communication and creativity and can relieve hormone problems and give a sense of balance and calm. I love the blues and indigo hues. “The best stones are sourced from all over the world and then handcrafted in Stourbridge where the lovely silver disc is hammered by hand and can be given an initial. Each bracelet is individual and totally unique,” explains Patsy. There are six bracelets, each with their own qualities: blue and royal indigo tones found in Sodalite are said to stimulate creativity; Tigers Eye, with its deep chocolate and caramel tones, oozes wisdom; Rose Quartz is known to be calming and represents unconditional love; gunmetal grey Hematite boosts energy; Snowflake Obsidian is associated with power and strength; and finally, Amethyst evokes peace, calm and spiritual awareness. You can simply enjoy the healing energy of the stones or find out how to use the bracelet to help with mindfulness and meditation and learn more about its unique qualities by visiting wooway.co.uk. Pam Corbin is the expert who professional cooks consult when they want to make jams, jellies, marmalades, chutneys, pickles or anything else to do with preserving. They know her as ‘Pam the Jam’, and this book is the culmination of her years of experience, distilled into more than 100 tried-and-tested recipes. Pam the Jam by Pam Corbin (Bloomsbury Publishing, £20). Photography by Mark Diacono.
RECIPE
B U S Y P ER S O N ’ S M ARM AL ADE Ingredients (6 × 200ml jars) • 850g tin prepared Seville orange pulp • 250ml water • finely grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon • 100ml lemon juice (2-3 lemons) • 750g jam sugar (with added pectin) Method 1. Turn out the pulp into a large heavy-based pan and add the water, lemon zest and juice and stir to combine. 2. Place the pan over a gentle heat and bring to a simmer. The mixture will be thick so keep stirring, paying particular attention to the edges of the base of the pan. Sprinkle in the sugar a third at a time and stir until dissolved. Bring to a steady boil for 8–9 minutes, stirring occasionally until the mixture feels thick and is semi-opaque. Remove from the heat. There is no need to check for setting point as this mixture contains plenty of pectin. 3. Tip the mixture into a wide-necked jug with a good pouring lip, then fill the sterilised jars to the brim. Seal immediately. Invert the sealed jars for a minute or so, to ensure the lids are sterilised, before turning the right way up and leaving to cool.
SPICY SAUSAGE ROLLS • Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/ Fan 160°C/Gas Mark 4 • Roll out 250g puff pastry to a 30 × 25cm rectangle and halve it lengthways • Spoon a generous tablespoon of tomato and chilli jam along the centre of each piece, spreading to within 1.5cm of the edge • Divide 500g sausage meat in two, and roll each piece into a long sausage shape that fits the length of the pastry • Position on the tomatoey pastry halves
TO M ATO & C H I L L I J A M Ingredients (4 × 200ml jars) • 1kg tomatoes (as ripe as possible) • 4-6 red chillies, halved lengthways and deseeded • 4 fat garlic cloves, peeled • 3cm piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
• Brush the pastry edges with a mixture of beaten egg and milk • Fold one side of the pastry over the sausage meat, pressing down to seal • Cut each roll into six smaller ones and place on a lined baking sheet • Slash the tops with a knife, then brush with more of the egg-milk mixture • Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and golden, and the meat is cooked through • Serve the sausage rolls with a little more of the tomato and chilli jam
• 200ml cider vinegar or wine vinegar • 50ml balsamic vinegar • finely grated zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lime or lemon • 400g golden granulated sugar • 1 tsp fine sea salt Method 1. Blitz a quarter of the tomatoes to a smooth purée in a food processor with the chillies, garlic and ginger. Place in a large heavy-based pan. Pulse the rest of the tomatoes to roughly chop and add to the pan with the vinegars, lime or lemon zest and juice. 2. Place the pan over a medium heat and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle in the sugar, stirring until dissolved. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer for about 30–40 minutes, stirring from time to time, until the mixture has reduced by roughly half. Remove from the heat and season with the salt. 3. Spoon the chutney into the warm jars, filling to the brim, and seal immediately.

A local historian has been raising a glass to his newest book – and readers might find they’re tempted to follow suit. This October has seen the publishing of Inns and Alehouses of Bridgnorth, which has taken Clive Gwilt 45 years to perfect and includes over 220 pubs. Born in Bridgnorth, Clive joined the Merchant Navy in 1976 and while at sea started researching the town’s history. His first foray into publishing came with a town guide that was published in 1976. To date, Clive has published about 30 books including volumes on Bridgnorth’s foundation with the castle, visitor attractions, and historic walks. In June this year, he published a Historic Tour Book through Amberley Publishers, which is available from Bridgnorth Library’s Information Centre. A copy of the new book and others written by Clive can also be purchased by calling 01746 765988.

The finals were held in the British Charcuterie Live Tent at the BBC Countryfile Live Show, in the grounds of Blenheim Palace. Their winning streak continued when the Great Taste Awards announced their stars of 2019 and yet again Ludlow Farmshop came out on top, being awarded four one-star Great Taste awards for their produce including for a rhubarb and ginger jam and a further two-star award for their Bringewood cheese. To try any of these award-winning products, pop down to Ludlow Farmshop or visit ludlowfarmshop.co.uk.
The winning season A community-run pub, the George and Dragon in Much Wenlock’s High Street, has been awarded CAMRA’s Pub of the Season for Autumn. Licensees Robin Bennett and Richard Torr said, “It's a great reward for Shona, Pete and the whole pub. We keep five real ales on tap including our new George and Dragon Amber Ale which is brewed specially for us. We’re so pleased that CAMRA and their members have given us this award.” Continuing their winning streak, they are also hoping to win Parliamentary Pub of the Year an award that recognises the dedication to serving the local community. The pub, which had faced closure back in 2018, was revived after a group of locals joined forces to keep it alive – and the team celebrated their first anniversary this October. Crystal said, “We’re thrilled with our new shop! We’d been searching for the perfect place to introduce our cakes to the Shrewsbury area for some time. Many of our customers from our flagship shop in Dawley travel from far afield to buy our cakes, so we wanted to open up a new base to cover this part of the county. When we heard about the opportunity to take on a unit at the Parade, we jumped at the chance.” Crystal Owen, the owner of Crystal's Cupcakes, in her new shop

GARDENING TIPS
Good Gardening Tips for November & December
Getting ready for winter… As we come to the end of another season, Ann Winwood gets us ready for the winter months… It’s unbelievable how the time flies as we find ourselves at the end of another season. While the weather’s mild it’s time to get the garden ready for winter. Make sure you’ve got fleece or fleece bags ready to put over tender plants such as cordylines, hebes, tree ferns and other semi hardy plants once the frosts arrive. It’s very important to remove dead foliage from around roses – only put on the compost heap if it’s not diseased. Borders can then be mulched with compost, well-rotted manure or bark, multipurpose compost is ideal for this and it’s cost-effective too.
Keep planting While it’s mild and there’s no frost in the ground, you can still plant any bare root hedging or fruit trees. For winter colour in the garden, why not plant shrubs such as viburnum, bodnantense dawn, skimmias, gaultherias or leucothoe.
Continue planting pansies, wallflowers and winter bedding; the sooner it’s done, the better. If we do get a cold frosty spell, winter pansy flowers will droop down but once they thaw out in the sun, they pop back up giving colour even on a cold day. November is the ideal month for planting tulip bulbs. Check heaters in glasshouses are working to avoid any last-minute panic. If we do get a cold spell, try and open the doors on greenhouses occasionally to allow some fresh air in; this is especially important with paraffin heaters, where fumes build up in a closed area and you can soon lose the plants that you’re trying to keep. Drain down hosepipes and water features that won’t be used again until next spring, to prevent damage by frosts.
Instant colour As the end of November approaches, many people start to purchase the traditional Christmas house plants. One of the best loved festive plants is the poinsettia, which can give instant colour to a room. They like good light during the day and a warm room, never in a draught. Only water
GARDENING TIPS when the soil is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes.
For winter colour in the garden, why not plant shrubs such as viburnum, bodnantense dawn, skimmias, gaultherias or leucothoe. If you have a cooler room, the brightly coloured cyclamen will be ideal. They always require good light; the most common cause of failure with this plant is overwatering. Only water just as the foliage begins to wilt and make sure that any excess water is removed from saucers after 15 minutes. Other plants ideal for Christmas colour are the Christmas cherry with its shiny red-orange berries, or Christmas cacti produce beautiful red, pink, orange, white or lavender flowers. Azaleas will flourish in either a warm or cool room and are very easy to keep, requiring plenty of water. There’s lots of choice in the orchid family and many of them are quite happy in normal room temperatures.
Along with many garden centres, we offer planted arrangements in baskets, which, like pot plants, can be gift wrapped, making them an ideal present. For a living gift, consider buying a shrub for the garden or a planted-up tub or hanging basket specifically designed for winter colour.
Tree’s company From the end of November, freshly cut Christmas trees will be available in centres. When you get your tree home, put it in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside the home make the tree absorb water very rapidly. Keep away from hot radiators, open fires and TV sets. This also applies to rooted trees, especially if you’re planning on planting it in the garden after Christmas. When choosing your tree, don’t forget to have a look inside the garden centre. Most put on spectacular Christmas displays. There’s always a multitude of baubles, garlands, lights and lit villages and,
if you don’t want a real tree, there’s an excellent range of artificial ones which can be difficult to tell from the real thing. Have a look in the festive light department if you get a chance – there’s so much choice today, from solar-powered spotlights and strings of lights to battery-powered sets and the huge range of electrical sets which will switch on at dusk and switch off a few hours later – you’ll never forget to switch them off again. Once the bad weather arrives, don’t forget bags of rock salt, outdoor tap covers, snow shovels, sledges and window scrappers. Remember the birds too, during cold weather, keep feeders topped up and offer fat balls and specialist feeds to encourage a wide range of birds into your garden. Put out fresh water regularly especially during freezing weather. Stay warm and happy gardening!

Christmas Bear Remember Bear, the spineless hedgehog? Cuan Wildlife is launching a children’s story book about Bear just in time for Christmas. Written by Gill Griffith, illustrated by Isobel Bushell and published by Ina Taylor, the book will charm small wildlife fans while supporting hedgehogs. “We are incredibly proud to launch this exciting book,” says Tina Cooke, Cuan’s community fundraiser.
Philip Dunn with Jak Abrahams of BASC
A soaring success The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) recently met Philip Dunne MP to discuss a range of ongoing conservation projects, including an update on the association’s birdbox education project.
Hedgehog Care As the colder weather is now upon us, wildlife charities are asking people to look out for smaller or underweight hedgehogs in their gardens. If hedgehogs are not fattened up enough ready for winter, it is difficult for them to survive and they cannot go into hibernation. You can help by leaving out food and clean water (make sure to replace when frozen). If you do see small hedgehogs, call Cuan Wildlife Rescue for advice on 01952 728070.
The meeting, which was hosted at Walcott Hall, focused on the importance of education and the aims behind the birdbox project. The aim is to connect more young people with wildlife by helping them put up their own birdboxes and watching the results. Over the summer period, BASC has visited several schools around the country in order to put up birdboxes and teach the children about the types of birds that will potentially call the box their home. “Conservation plays an absolutely vital role in ensuring we maximise the opportunities for the natural world to flourish and if we didn’t, we would see the continuing decline of species right across the world but also surprisingly in this country,” says Philip.
Festive wreath making In the 16th century, the use of wreaths was adopted by Christians and became a custom in the form of advent wreaths. They were traditionally made of evergreens, which symbolize eternal life, holly oak, and red berries. Today the wreath is a stalwart decoration of the festive period, often placed in a prominent position on the front door to welcome visitors. One way to get into the festive spirit is to make your own Christmas wreath, it’s the perfect family activity, or a fun way to get competitive with your neighbours! The best way to begin is to raid your garden utilising evergreen foliage as your base; think sprigs of conifer, holly and ivy. You will also need a wire wreath frame, some florists wire and some pruners. The bundles of greenery need to be in proportion to the frame, separate the prepared materials into piles so you’re ready to begin work. Once you have created your base you can either leave your wreath au naturel, or accessorized with a pretty bow, ribbon or other festive finishing such as seasonal berries and fruits together with pinecones. However, if you would rather attend a wreath making course, Big Little Things flower shop is offering a workshop at Dudmaston Estate on Sunday 8 and Sunday 15 December. To find out how to book email hello@biglittlethings.co.uk or call 01952 730614.
LOCAL WALKS
Local walks
The Severn Strollers Walking for Health scheme was set up as part of the National Walking for Health initiative. All the walks have been graded for you to suit levels of ability:
At this time of year, it’s delightful to relax in front of a crackling fire with a glass of something warming- although it always feels better if you have experienced the delights of a bracing ramble over the Shropshire countryside first.
Grade 1 - up to 30 mins; flat ground or gentle slopes. Grade 2 - 30 - 60 mins; may include some moderate slopes.
Walking has been described as the perfect exercise and we completely agree! It not only helps everyone live happier, healthier lives but can also help to keep your mind and your social life healthy too, so why not make a start and find a walk near you today.

WILDLIFE DIARY
The Secret Pool
In the first of a two-part series, Ed focuses his attention on the Shropshire Hills. This month he visits Carding Mill Valley in Church Stretton The creature I’m looking at does not look the way a fish should look. Rather than having a scaly streamlined body, it has a flattened back, large head and brown mottled skin. It doesn’t swim through the water but has settled on the bottom of the plastic container in which it is temporarily held captive. Bullheads are part of the benthic fish family which live on or near the bottom of the seabed, irrespective of the depth of water. Their body is adapted to this lifestyle; they do not possess a swim bladder, which means that they naturally sink to the stream bed, and their large pectoral fins help them to maintain a position in the strong-flowing water. We discovered the bullhead on a family outing to Carding Mill Valley. Like so many of the children that visit the site each year, my son immediately wanted to don his wellies and take his pond net into the stream. Carding Mill Valley is one of the busiest parts of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Geological complexity Soon after our family trip, I return to Carding Mill Valley to explore further. I follow the stream up the valley; a chill
breeze heralds the changing season and the path weaves between the interlocking spurs. These are ridges of land that protrude down into the valley from the surrounding hills, showing the geological complexity of this area. The Long Mynd was formed beneath the sea and would have originally comprised layers of sand, silt and mud that have subsequently turned into rock.
Surrounded by steep slopes on three sides; a secret underwater kingdom in the hills. I turn off the main path and start to walk up a smaller valley into the hills, stopping to admire a veteran ash tree. The tree has an incredible shape that is a result of its position in the landscape; perched on a rocky knoll, the roots are exposed and have offered safe refuge for the sheep that graze this valley. The branches arch outwards, acting as a counterbalance for the twisted wind-blown trunk. Large burrs have formed all over the bark, worn smooth by generations of children climbing the tree. The ash tree stands guard over an old millpond which explains why this small valley is called New Pool Hollow. Carding Mill Valley itself is named after the cloth-making industry that the valley once supported. Skulking in the margins of the millpond today are several stickleback; this

species is unusual in that the male fish builds a nest from vegetation in the pond in which the female lays her eggs and then the male defends the nest from predators.
Large burrs have formed all over the bark, worn smooth by generations of children climbing the tree. I continue walking up New Pool Hollow and at the edge of the stream, I find a patch of water mint still in flower. It is not unusual for this species to bloom into the autumn; they have delicate lilac flowers and square stems. Nearby, there is a patch of soft rush. One of my earliest memories of trips to Carding Mill Valley when I was a child is peeling back the green outer layer on the rush spikes to expose the white pith inside.
A Shropshire spa I climb a steep, grassy bank to discover a larger pool fringed by willow, rowan and birch trees. It is surrounded by steep slopes on three sides; a secret underwater kingdom in the hills. The reservoir was built in 1902, at a time when tourism was growing in Church Stretton and there was a desire to create a fashionable spa. As winter’s grip tightens, the fish will move into deeper water to seek their food amongst the pond weed. Today the reservoir is
used for wild swimming and the National Trust who own this land have plans to harness the power of the water to create green energy. Below the reservoir, I discover a structure built into the bank. It is a service tunnel that leads beneath the reservoir, with a locked metal gate guarding the brick-built entrance. Inside I can see an old cast iron pipe draped in moss. It is the rain that falls over the hills that brings life to the streams and water bodies of Carding Mill Valley. The way that most people experience this landscape is by climbing the hills or looking up at them from the valley below. The tunnel leads deep into the hidden, darkest interior of this ancient place.
Do one thing for wildlife this month… The National Trust are always looking out for volunteers to help care for Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills. Various roles are available; for more details, please visit nationaltrust.org.uk/features/volunteer-at-carding-millvalley-and-the-shropshire-hills.
In each issue, WW! nature expert and Shropshire Council’s Parks and Greenspace Officer Edward Andrews looks at the changing seasons.

Happy Tails Q: When should I book my puppy in for his first groom?
A: At my dog spa we see puppies
Firework season Although this is an exciting time of year for us, the same cannot be said for our pets. As many as 40% of cats and dogs find the unpredictable noise and flashes created by fireworks frightening and very stressful, potentially putting their safety at risk.
How to keep your pets feeling safe and secure Make sure all dogs and cats are kept inside after dark, plan dog walks accordingly and lock cat flaps. Check that fences and gates remain secure after periods of bad weather. This is the time to check microchip details, collars and tags are up to date, should your pet be spooked into running away. Keep curtains drawn and turn up the TV or radio. This will help block out some of the sound and visual effects. Get creative with blankets and bedding to make a safe den. Our dogs like to hide away in small dark places to help make themselves feel more secure. Place in their favourite toys and something of yours; the familiar smells will help them feel a little more at ease. Cats may be more comfortable in a high up spot. Try to act normally, if they want to pace around a little, let them - if you are relaxed it will help them feel relaxed too. If they’re up for a treat and a game, engage them with some play as a distraction.
If you need extra help There are lots of products on the market designed to help calm and relieve anxiety, speak to your vet about plug-in pheromone diffusers, sprays and natural calming capsules. These should be started in the weeks leading up to the fireworks season. Sometimes general precautions aren’t enough, and it may be appropriate to seek a veterinary consultation for prescription medications. Lastly, spare a thought for our wildlife this firework season. If you’re building bonfires, don’t leave them constructed for long and check before lighting to make sure no little friends are hibernating inside. Dispose responsibly of any plastic litter created by fireworks. Sky or Chinese lanterns aren’t safe for animals or for the environment.

from when they are fully covered with all their vaccinations. It’s important that young puppies attend grooming appointments during their critical learning and socialisation phase, so they learn about the grooming techniques and equipment when they are most receptive in their development. If you have a puppy of mixed heritage with a coat that is a mix of textures, this coat can tangle and matt very easily and does go through a developmental stage where the coat changes so grooming is essential.
Q: I think my dog is allergic to cereals what can I do? A: Cereal allergies are very
common in dogs these days, symptoms can be itchiness of the body and ears and an upset tummy. The first port of call is your local veterinary surgeon, to rule out a more serious issue, also check for common protein sources which can aggravate the body, such as chicken. There are many cereal free ranges with novel protein sources on the market. After speaking with your vet, you can carefully adjust their diet. Bear in mind, it can take weeks before you’ll notice an improvement.

Maggie’s Canada! A local travel agent has been awarded a special status for her knowledge about Canada. Maggie Rogers of the Travel Wallet in Bridgnorth has been appointed one of only 25 Elite Canada Specialist Agents in the whole of the UK. Maggie explained, “I just love Canada: the friendly people, the scenery, great food and amazing wildlife. Last year I floated over a sleeping humpback whale while on a visit to Newfoundland. I watched puffins and bald eagles flying almost past my face, went in search of icebergs, and ate the freshest tastiest fish… the list is endless.”
Samaritan support Solicitors and support staff from a Telford law firm have donated £405 to their local branch of the Samaritans. The team at MFG Solicitors made the donation after staff held a variety of raffles, quizzes, chocolate sales and events over the past 12 months for the Wellington-based charity. Telford Samaritans’ director David Lewis said, “We appreciate the wonderful efforts in raising this money, it will help us to focus on dealing with callers both locally and nationally.” If you would like to get involved with fundraising, visit samaritans.org.
