Every Body Is Doing It!!!
Confessions At The Party VIGNETTES by TES Cleaning In Style
This Issue was Fun -- I got to finally do a shoot I have been thinking up for almost three years! It’s the Every Body is Doing it!!! Spread. Or the Seven Deadly Sins and I was the “Model” because I couldn’t direct this shoot with a model. I found It ended up not being a shoot “Story,” but an Art peace I wanted to do. It’s a Sarcastic honest, we all do it, or know someone who does situation, and I felt I was the “sick” enough person to walk into a grocery store, grab one of those electric carts, beep beep back it up, and shop just so my photographer could get the shot for SLOTH (pg.16), park the cart and walk away...Hey anything for the shot. I have seen this done before by a perfectly able-bodied person, and I was shocked. But who am I to judge --I don’t want to be judged...nobody does. Oh and the shoeshine guy was AMAZING!(pg.18)
This issue has some advice and some eye candy both meant to help guide you into spring:) T..xoxooxoxox P.S Pg. 53 links you to Mine and My business partners Rad Radio Show! YES!!!

At The Party You know you do it. Anyone, man or woman, does it. It’s the size up. Top Three when you enter a party/room? For me, my top three when I enter a room are… 1. prettiest? 2. oldest? 3. youngest? I like to fall in between the last two and be in the upper portion of #1. Age is something I cannot escape. It’s science - the day you were born compared to now. But Pretty. Pretty now lies in the eyes of the beholder, and that beholder is my eyes and my standards. Every gal has some standard. No one can hold a flame to our own self-disillusionment. Once at the party, I make it a point to talk to all three. It’s like a Game, where I face my own judgments and where I face reality. I get to know what I first thought and get to reassess once I’ve actually spoken to the person rather than just judging solely on outward first impressions. After I reassess the situation, my next Top Three are: 1. be the 2nd most intoxicated at the party(or at least not the first). 2. do not get in a fight with my husband (dammit I tend to do this). 3. do not say anything to insult anyone (dammit I tend to do this too)! Here is the deal: unless my sister is around or my husband is nearby (and mind you we are not fighting), this will happen. Mainly because I somehow have this amazing ability to just say what is on my mind. It just pops out of my mouth at the same time I’m thinking it. I have tried and tried again to wear a muzzle, but this just isn’t appropriate (or fashionable) in public. The funny part is that I strive for my personality to come off as “easygoing.” Ever since middle school, I have wanted to appear like this super chill cool kid, yet inside I was screaming about exactly what I wanted to happen, what needed to be done, and how it needed to go down. Total Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation. I’m sure friends/boyfriends thought I was the bait and switch – like, “Wow this gal is so calm and cool,” and then BAM I would freak the fuck out when something didn’t go the way I wanted… I mean can you stand it? I can barely stand it myself, but here we are at a party sizing people up to where I fit in and then going ahead and making a fool of myself. Shit! Just Shit! Do you do this? Live inside of your head having a total conversation with yourself that is filled with anxiety without seeming like you are caring? I don’t have a personality that is easily surprised and definitely not shocked - Never really have been. With what I do for a living, people drop shit in my lap like I’m a Denny’s dumpster. At this point I’ve really heard it all mainly because I take care for all kinds of people. I have this crazy ability to ask someone if they are cheating on their spouse like I just asked them if
they like pink or blue better. I think I got this “special” gift from my mom, who talks to everyone like they are her new step brother/sister, and I need to get to know you since it’s gonna be a long awkward ride in life so we might as well just get it all out in the open! I have this snobbery about the way I live my life because it’s short, so I feel like “let’s just get to the good stuff.” The stuff that seems worthwhile - the stuff that I care about. But OMG, am I bitch when I believe you think this too? I believe we all have our top 3’s. I don’t think we are that different. For the last 17 years, I’ve had the opportunity to ask the inappropriate questions, and I’ve found out that well, we all kinda suck, and that just makes us human. And the cool thing is that we eventually find out the people we wanna "time suck" our time with. That is so Cool!!!! Working your way through life, making mistakes, making a fool of yourself, finding friends, navigating through your Own truths…that’s being human. That’s enjoying humanity. So back to the party: I have a tertiary judgment, too. These are my final three: 1. who is left standing? 2. who seems to be going home with who? 3. who made me laugh? The laugh part used to be the most important because That is who I would go “home” with Wayyyyy Backkkk Whennn I was “going home” with people. Now I just try not to get in a fight with my husband, so I can go home with him. But, before the married times, that would be the best. The funny person that was just smart enough and just sarcastic enough that he could turn my head. You know, the guy who could turn the head of the almost prettiest, who is also the: middle youngest second drunkest still standing not fighting with anyone who hopefully has not really insulted anyone at the party and even possibly made someone laugh... And maybe, just maybe, the judgment party in my head settled down enough that I actually had a fun time. Because another part of being a human is committing to and making Progress.

Shit My Sister’s Doing...PURE BARRE I work out. It’s my thing. I know about it, can spit knowledge about it, and am always informed about the next new fad. Much like my friends who know names of bands I’ve never heard of or can actually tell the difference between Cabernets and Pinots, I like to try out new gyms and find the best yoga studios. I just turned 30 last month and am headed on the downward slope of 3 months post-partum, which is what I am assuming is the acceptable amount of time to carry that extra baby weight before people just accept you for becoming fat. My friend bought me a one month unlimited membership to Pure Barre (she doesn't want to accept me for being fat). I wasn't sure if I should thank her for it or punch her, but I figured I would give it a try either way. According to the website it was started by a dancer in Michigan, and by using small isometric movements on a ballet bar, it tones, lifts, and burns fat in record-breaking time. I’ve been to all 3 locations in Seattle, and though there is something I would change in each studio, parking is always free, and in the Bellevue, Queen Anne University Village area that’s all I could ask for. The hour-long class is broken up into 15-minute high intensity sections working the arms/abs, legs, “seat”, and abs again. The first 2 classes are for figuring out the warm up and what the instructor means by “tuck and hold,” but by the 3rd you can focus more on your technique and you really start to feel the burn. I have found that each instructor has her own twist on the movement and music choice; so if you find one you like, stick with her. For me, it’s all about liking the person talking and the music playing. Also, being an avid spinner I am in the habit of showing up to class15 minutes early to get the best bike with a mirror view. This is not necessary with Pure Barre because the class numbers are well maintained, and you always get a mirror view. Space can be a bit cramped when one class ends and another is starting so try to bring the least amount possible. I’ve never had a hard time getting a cubby to keep my belongings, but usually I’m either waiting to claim one or someone is waiting to claim mine at the end of class. As for the “equipment” needed, socks are necessary, and I purchased a pair of Pure Barre socks with grips on the bottom. I’m not sure if these actually help, but I would feel left out if my socks didn’t say Pure Barre across the toes like everyone else’s! It’s not much of a cardio burn if that’s your thing; I barely see sweat on anyone’s brow, but it is a great workout and I highly recommend going. Just be sure to go more than once so you can really start to see the results and truly understand what it means to “tuck and hold.” Sister :)
Yes Please!!! Q. Every sunscreen breaks me out! I want to protect my skin, but no matter what I use, I have a breakout. A. A lot of people are in your same boat. There are several ingredients typical to sunscreens that clog pores. I suggest trying Powder Me SPF 30 by Jane Iredale in Translucent. Brush on this fine finishing powder during your makeup application for broad spectrum protection. Since it is a physical sunscreen, it doesn't contain the irritating ingredients that chemical sunscreens do. If that little jar of love doesn't work for you then invest in some fabulous hats and have fun accessorizing! Q. What is the best drugstore hair removal system for my (dare I say it… lip and chin)? And how can I prevent breakouts and ingrown hair afterwards? A. When it comes to over the counter hair removal I keep it old school, Sally Hansen style. The pre-waxed, pre-cut strips are a clean and easy way to remove unwanted hair. Just make sure to throw that azulene oil in the garbage when you open your kit, especially if you want to prevent breakouts. Often those post wax bumps (especially above the upper lip) are caused by a histamine reaction and taking an antihistamine 30 minutes before you wax will prevent that. We all love the feeling of a hair free skin surface but DON’T TOUCH! Your follicles are wide open after hair removal and prone to infection. If you must apply something to the freshly waxed skin, try an ice cube but keep in mind that your skin will be more sensitive to cold after waxing. Q. When should eye cream be used and at what age? A. Mature skin begins at 30, so when you reach that milestone go ahead and reach for the eye cream. It should be applied every time you wash your face (after toner, before moisturizer). Until 35, a simple starter eye cream will do such as the Weleda Wild Rose Eye Cream. When you reach your mid-30’s, it’s “go time,” so save your pennies for a more high octane product like SkinCeuticals Eye Balm It’s the bomb J

I'm Sheli, and I'm your Hair-A-Pist. Let me help you get the most out of your hair and salon experiences. So bring it on! Send me your questions, and let’s have a good hair day… Every day. WhatTheFashionmagazine@gmail.com Subject: Hair-A-Pist 1.What is a cowlick really? It is your hair growth pattern on your head. Like a finger print, everyone has a different pattern to their direction of the hair growth. I like to cut the hair with the natural fall if someone has a strong cowlick. Cowlicks can be anywhere on the head but usually strongest in the crown area. There is no taming or training a cowlick, I like to work with it and not fight it. Some people just can't have short bangs or too short in the crown.
3.Should I get hair extensions?
If your high maintenance and have $ to burn. Extensions can be beautiful but they take a lot of time, care, and money. Better yet go get some clip in extensions to easily beef up your hair for your special events and nights out. Make sure you get real hair in you hair pieces so we can color and heat style it to blend with your natural hair. My Friend likes to name your hair pieces so be thinking about what your new “friend” will be called.
5.What is the best %tip these days and is it still pho-pa to tip the owner? Tip like you would in a restaurant. Usually 15-20% You don't need to tip on your product sale just your service dollar amount. Please consider tipping more if your stylist has gone out of their way to accommodate you. Squeezing you in, staying late, coming in on days off are all situations that a larger tip is nice. If you are high maintenance ( you know who you are) tip more and you will be forgiven. Unloading your personal business and getting free therapy, tip more. Stylist really do give a lot of themselves to you and the gesture of a tip tells us that we are appreciated. I will go above and beyond for you if I know that you appreciate it.
2.Yikes I have dandruff- what can I do? Davines Purifying line in Natural Tech. Use the Purifying Gel to exfoliate off the dead skin. Use the Purifying shampoo every other shampoo until the dandruff is gone. Up keep is using the purifying shampoo once a week and exfoliation when needed. If that doesn't do it, go see your doctor to see if you may need medication or have an allergy.
4. What is your fav. ponytail band brand? I heard you can get breakage from someYou can get breakage from pulling on you hair anytime. Please be careful when brushing and putting any hair accessory in and out. Best pony tail holders are.....A Scrunchy. Just kidding! Look into getting bands that are covered in fabric like silk or cotton. Rubber or metal can easily snag the hair. A simple updo might be a fun alternative to pony to get your hair up. Try some of these options.. Goody hair screws called simple styles spin pin. Goody has a whole line of "simple styles hair accessories for securing up dos. Sephora collection ribbon hair ties and Blax snagfree elastics are some suggestions for your basic ponytail.
6.What product can really make my hair shine w/o weighing it down? I'm obsessed with Davines new product Oi. This will make your hair shiny from the inside out. Super light and airy. Cuts your blow dry time down and can be used wet or dry. There are a lot of shine products out there that will sit on the outside of your hair too, like a spray shine. I love the high gloss look of Davines Gloss spray, not too weighty and you are protecting the hair too.

1.Question: "What is one staple item that you, Lady Look Good, cannot live without?" Answer: When it comes to clothing, these days I die without my leggings from Zara. They are too perfect: comfortable, durable and thick enough to look like actual pants (not workout pants, not tights). It sucks that we don't have a Zara in Seattle yet, so I buy them online or on my travels. I currently have four Zara receipts in my wallet from four different cities: Vancouver, BC, San Antonio, TX, Barcelona, Spain and Florence, Italy. I'm obsessed. Oh, and did I mention they're only $35.90?
2.Question: "I need a new swimsuit, can you recommend a favorite brand?" Answer: There's not one single brand that works for everyone, because every woman's body is different. If you're disproportionate (and, honestly, most of us are!) and you want a two-piece, you should shop somewhere that allows you to buy the bottoms separately from the tops. Target and J.Crew offer this. I also like Miraclesuit brand, they guarantee everyone will look 10 pounds slimmer instantly, so that's a plus. Some of their styles are a little boring, but if it makes you Look Good, then who cares!
3.Question: "My husband always makes comments about my outfits, and they aren't usually flattering. He called my ruffle blouse a 'pirate shirt' and he asked me if I was going to the rodeo last time I wore boots. I'm worried he doesn't like the way I look. Am I overreacting?" Answer: It's totally natural to want to impress your partner. I'd much rather hear "Wow, you look hot!" than "Is that what you're wearing?" or "When did you buy a cape?" But you always have to consider the source of the comment: if your husband is in the business of fashion, then his opinion may be valid. If he's just a dude wearing cargo shorts and a t-shirt with barbecue sauce stains on it, then he has no idea what he's talking about and is probably just trying (badly) to make a joke, not to hurt your feelings. If it bothers you, tell him to stop or remind him he'll probably have a better chance of getting lucky if he tells you that you look pretty.
4.Question: "I always feel like I'm rushing in the morning, and I go to work unfinished. There's always something off, like my hair is crazy or I forget my mascara or my dress is wrinkled. Is there a solution?" Answer: Yes, brat. Get up earlier! Would you rather cling helplessly to sleep for an extra 10, 20, 30 minutes or get up, get yourself polished and look good for 8 hours? Here's my advice to break the habit: on a day that you don't have to go to work--say, a Sunday morning--wake up naturally and set a timer to see how long it takes you to do all your regular morning stuff, like take a shower, do your hair and make-up, get dressed, have a cup of coffee. An hour? 90 minutes? Then, on Monday, give yourself that much time before you have to leave for work. Voila, problem solved.
5.Question: "I'm trying to lose weight. I want to shop for clothes now, but I worry/hope that I will be a smaller size soon. What should I do?" Answer: This is easy: You should shop now. Don't go crazy, but get yourself a few new things to boost your energy and confidence. When it comes to feeling good about yourself, don't delay. Life is too short to walk around feeling knowingly frumpy waiting for "someday." If you're training for a marathon or something, and are on track to lose lots of weight soon, you can always buy shoes, scarves, jewelry and coats. I also recommend you buy a belt that you love (BCBG has a great selection), that way you can synch in your waist in style as you drop the pounds.

I am the Boiling Frog
Oh god, I’m just so miserable. I feel weighed down all the time, and I’m tired of thinking about my future with this man. What future? The one where I feel like I have to always watch his back, waiting for him to get distracted by the next “hot thing?” The one where I can’t even talk to him about a financial plan without a fight erupting? The one where I do most of the housework and all of the finances? I don’t even feel like trying to be healthy anymore...I’m just passing time. I am the boiling frog. WHAM! “What are you doing with this girl?!” “I’m just not happy with you. I feel like I’m dying in this life. I wish you understood how easy it is to please a man. I want a passionate marriage. I never get to do the things that I want. I gave up everything for you. I have things in common with her. You’re so sad and paranoid all the time. I’m sick of being married to a sad, paranoid wife!” “I want a passionate marriage! I want to feel safe, like I’m the one my husband wants. I support you with everything you want to do. You’re leaving the country for a month. You’re looking at leaving for grad school for a few months out of the year. You’re playing sports and music. You know what we have in common… I’m your wife!” “You’re always trying to leave me, and it really hurts wondering if you’re going to try to leave me again.” “It starts with you stepping out on me; the cart doesn’t go before the horse here. If you want me to stay, then don’t step out.” “I think I might like to try to save our marriage. I don’t know if it will work. Will you go on a date with me?”
“I don’t trust you. You're not the kind of man I’d like to date.” I am so sad. My heart is broken again. How did I become so worthless to the person I love most in the whole world? Fast Forward: The sun is shining, and I noticed it for the first time in years. I mean really noticed it, and I was grateful for it. It was as if the dark cloud over my life had parted. I had two days this week where I literally had a spring in my step, like a heavy weight had been lifted off of me. I love exercising again. I don’t have to do it to stay hot enough to keep my husband faithful. I’m doing it because I love feeling strong. I’m growing a garden because I want to watch something grow. I take walks just to notice things that I haven’t been able to enjoy in a long time. I don’t mind being single. This is the best I’ve felt in years. Everything is a struggle with this divorce: from finances, to caring for the kids, to possibly losing my home or business, but I don’t care. I jumped out of the boiling water and into a cool pond. I am still alive.

Jenny on Fashion, Motherhood and Spring in Seattle
When you live in Seattle, Washington, spring is more like soggy, sort of wet and kind of foggy. After the bustle of the holiday season wears off, you are facing down 6 + months until summer, and that is an optimistic estimate. Don’t get me wrong, our wet weather is part of the natural beauty and there is something truly magical about living with all our evergreenery. That said, the wait for summer is long, and I will probably be wearing my knee high boots until mid-May. Like most people, I start to get the midwinter blahs, and start fantasizing about hot summer nights and shedding some layers. This year more than most because at this this time last year I was 2 months into maternity leave/being a new mom. My fashion was largely dictated by function (nursing). Yoga pants (read: sweats), nursing tanks, and cardigans were in heavy rotation. Spring and summer were variations on the same theme, perhaps a billowy blouse or empire waist dress replaced the professorial cardigan but, by and large I was still in “new mom” mood. You know it if you have been there, it is when your wardrobe starts to play like a broken record, or a song stuck on repeat. You stick with what works, because, well, it works. This year I am especially looking forward to spring clothing because I might actually purchase something new for myself. I am looking forward to embracing the new, whatever that may be, because for perhaps the first time in my adult life, I possess the confidence (or lack the awareness) to just BE. Whatever well this newfound buoyancy springs from, I won’t dwell on it. Rather, I will embrace it. I will take baby steps toward reintroducing heels into my wardrobe, colors (emerald!), and maybe even skirts (for the first time since 2004) will reenter my rotation. I will put back on my pre-pregnancy jeans, and revel in a whole portion of my closet that was dormant for the last year. At the end of the day, I may be wearing my child’s dinner, or dirt from the garden, but as Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Jenny

Welcome to our Book Club Heidi Cartmel Wild by Cheryl Strayed I wasn’t going to review this book after I heard Oprah had reopened her book club for it. I figured you had all run out and picked it up. Then I realized it was my interjection when I heard a conversation on this book and had to jump in is what got me this gig in WTF! So here we go. This memoir grabs you and doesn’t let you go. You will be appalled at the pure honesty and courage of this woman. You’ll wish you could be the voice of reason. Yet you also wish you could be brave enough to embark on a truly eye opening journey during your darkest times. This book is like a stripped down, raw version of Eat, Pray, Love for a much more unpretentious crowd.
Bonk, the Curious Coupling of Science and Sex by Mary Roach How can you not read this?! With a simple picture at each chapter start your interest is peaked and your face erupts into a smile. Is that a mechanical bull she’s riding? Expect to find out about things that have never crossed your mind. Or perhaps, it will bring back memories of that ex-‐boyfriend. Yes, that one, the one with the crooked unit. And help you gain insight in your speculations as to why it was so crooked.
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zaf‘on This is a gripping edge of your seat, page turning ride of a mystery! (And this is coming from someone who really doesn’t like mysteries.........I mean do you ever guess it right? I don’t!) You’ll be whisked through the dark streets of 1945 Barcelona by a young lad on the verge of finding manhood amongst other marvels. If he makes it............ Shadow is a haunting, coming of age love story that makes you want to fly to Barcelona and search for the Cemetery of Forgotten Books or look for a Julian Carafax book next time you’re at a rare book store.
Do you Dream in Color? Insights from a girl without sight by Laurie Rubin This one fell short for me. I expected to find a little more struggle and heartache. But not so, perhaps Laurie is just a bit too vanilla for me. You’d think being a blind lesbian opera singer we’d get a few swirls of flavor. Laurie Rubin must have an amazing musical voice but is still developing her writing one.
Mother Knows Best As an older adult, sometimes a question comes up...If you could have done something different, what would you have done? My answer is that I would have led a less stressful life, and the great thing about that answer is that it isn't too late to start! I know everyone has stressors. First there is being young and single and the whole "dating thing,” which is often coupled with navigating new jobs and trying to keep up with expectations. Then there are often children and "figuring out the who, what, when, where and really WHY???? of adulthood that comes from relationships with friends, family, and co-workers. Throughout my younger years, venting to girlfriends helped relieve the stress. As I moved into my thirties, the exercise craze was in full force(Hello 80’s), so I started running and boy, I felt great! After a three-mile run, I was a new woman. My forties were a turning point with regard to my stress levels and how to manage it. I started to have sleepless nights and could not pinpoint why I continued to feel "off" 80% of the time. I started to see a chiropractor nine years ago, and I have seen her every month since my first visit! My back, which is where I’ve found I carry my stress, loves my chiropractor. If you have a happy body, you are happier (and healthier). When I turned 50, I had my first facial. Can I say ahhhhhhhh?!? What a wonderful treat with great benefits. Yes, the aging process is still a battle, but a facial can soften everything, and its healthy for your skin and RELAXING!! This past month, a lot of work stress was weighing heavily on me emotionally and physically, so I went for a therapeutic massage. That was a sure step in the right direction! The tension release is a slow process, but I already feel the difference after three sessions! Along my "stress journey" I’ve realized that I needed to weed out those things (sometimes people) that weighed me down a lot sooner than I did. In the big picture of life, don't we all want to be the best we can be all the time? Negativity won't let you do that. Walk away from the person, place, or thing that brings out the worst in you. Don’t surround yourself with anything other than who you are or who you want to be. So, your lesson is to treat yourself as someone special and make it a habit to do so. Do not wait like I did to see what great "healers" we have out there once stress has taken its toll. I agree with Oprah when she says, "Live your best life.” Only you can take charge of that. If you feel good (no, make that great) on the inside, you simply GLOW on the outside! Treat Yourself... xo Mom
