— THE GREAT OUTDOORS Arkansas is a land of many natural amenities, creating an outdoor culture second to none. This starts with our majestic rivers, and nowhere in the state will you find a better collection of these clear, cool waterways than right here in and around Mountain Home.

RIVERS

— ROLLIN’ ON THE RIVER Like the water? You’re in the right place.

BUFFALO RIVER

NORTH FORK RIVER

WHITE RIVER

The Buffalo River isn’t the biggest or mightiest of Arkansas’s many waterways, but it is arguably the most significant. The first National River in the United States (so designated in 1972), it remains one of the few rivers in the country to be undammed, flowing freely through the Ozarks for 150 miles exactly as it has for millennia. Surrounded by the staggering beauty of soaring cliffs and forest, it’s a slice of paradise enjoyed by 800,000 visitors per year. Locals will float the upper river via kayak or canoe during high-water periods of the year, typically March through June, although that season can extend into July some years depending on weather and rainfall. Smallmouth bass fishing is king on the upper Buffalo River wilderness, with more spotted bass and largemouth in the mix in the lower stretches. Hiking and camping here are also great, providing tons of selfieworthy scenery.

It’s often said that good things come in small packages, and Arkansas’s North Fork River bears this out. Meandering for just five miles between Lake Norfork Dam and the White River, this waterway packs in a lot of outdoor beauty and some of the best fishing in the entire state. Trout fishing is the headliner on the North Fork, thanks to regular water releases from the dam that keep the water between 47 and 58 degrees. This creates the ideal fish habitat and brings anglers from all over the world to Arkansas to test their skill against the wily brook, brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout, all of which can be found here. At low water, wade fishing is popular while float fishing is recommended when the water is high. Any one of the guide shops in the area can advise the first-timer on river conditions as well as special catch-and-release guidelines.

The granddaddy waterway in this part of the state is the White River — a 720mile behemoth that flows north to south from the Ozarks to the Arkansas Delta. In the northern reaches, the river starts rapid and wild, especially during the spring, then settles down during the rest of the year. The immense size and power of the river led to multiple dams through the years, and these not only control flow, but they have created outstanding recreational opportunities. Canoeing/kayaking, camping and hiking opportunities abound along the White River, as does fishing for catfish, bass, walleye and sunfish. The trout fishing here is world class, particularly near Bull Shoals Dam. The dam sits right inside the Bull Shoals-White River State Park; check out the visitor center for a good primer on all of the region’s recreation and wildlife. Or, visit one of the many resorts here for a relaxing weekend.

— LAKE LIFE Live life like a local, and enjoy the tranquility and fun of our two gorgeous lakes. These sapphire playgrounds offer a range of activities from the relaxing to the heart-pounding. Gather the family, and get ready to make some memories off the shoreline and in the waves.

LAKES

MOUNTAIN HOME LAKES ARE GOOD FOR WHAT AILS YOU. Mountain Home’s area lakes provide beauty and relaxation any time of year. These shimmering locales allow you to unwind and de-stress with gorgeous views and unlimited recreation. Mountain Home isn’t just a destination or a journey, but a place to call home — your oasis is waiting! If Bull Shoals Lake had a motto, it might very well be, “If you’re going to go, GO BIG.” The largest lake in Arkansas, Bull Shoals offers a whopping 1,000 miles of shoreline and 74 square miles of surface. Clean and beautiful, this pristine attraction welcomes thousands upon thousands of visitors every year. Watersports abound on Bull Shoals, and people wakeboarding, tubing and water skiing are familiar sights here. Boating is a breeze thanks to low traffic and wide channels; with such a large surface area, you’ll never feel crowded or fail to find your own secluded cove to drop

anchor and relax as well. Set up camp, or visit one of the many resorts near the lake for a weekend the whole family will enjoy. If it can happen on the water, it’s happening at Bull Shoals Lake, a glittering sapphire gem in the emerald Ozark Mountains. Offering 550 miles of shoreline and covering 22,000 acres, crystal-clean Lake Norfork offers a little something for everyone. Take to the water for boating, water skiing and swimming. Don’t have a watercraft? Visit one of the commercial docks on the lake to rent one. The fishing here is as good as you’ll find in the region, especially for bass, crappie and walleye. Diving is another popular pastime on the lake; explore underwater treasures including a sunken bus, airplane, bulldozer and even the former Henderson Bridge. Enjoy a picnic in one of the 19 developed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks, or make it a longer stay with a rented cabin that provides your own spot for relaxation with friends and family as you explore the bluffs and rolling hills in between legendary Ozark sunsets. Whatever stirs your soul, you’ll find your own personal paradise on Lake Norfork.

THINGS TO DO

— COME STAY AWHILE

MOUNTAIN HOME — WHERE THE OUTDOORS IS A WAY OF LIFE, NOT JUST A SEASON.

Between the rivers, lakes and trails, Mountain Home offers no end of outdoor recreation. Where peace of mind comes easy with endless days of world-class fishing, boating on our crystal-blue lakes or reconnecting with family, we are everything to write home about.

ATVS

A short drive from Mountain Home you will find Pigeon Creek ATV and Motorcycle Area. Go north from Mountain Home on Arkansas Highway 201. Cross over the Pigeon Creek arm of Norfork Lake and continue north on Highway 201 to Baxter County Road 484 (on the left side of Highway 201 as you head north). Turn onto County Road 484, proceeding down the hill. County Road 484 turns into County Road 486 as you get nearer to the ATV area. Just north of the border is Cloud 9 Ranch in Caulfield.

If you’re interested in camping near the water check out Bull Shoals Lake Dam Site Park and Lakeview Campground for Bull Shoals Lake; Henderson Park, Cranfield Campground and Robinson Point for Lake Norfork; and Bull Shoals White River Campground and White River Campground and Cabins for river camping. GOLF

For challenging play in a beautiful setting, you can’t beat the golf courses featured throughout the Twin Lakes area. Big Creek Golf & Country Club has held Golf Digest’s coveted five-star ranking for nearly 20 years in a row, offering year-round play. The three-tiered, 400-yard driving range and separate putting and chipping areas provide practice and warmup before tackling the par 72 course. Featuring white sand bunkers, L-93 bentgrass greens and beautiful zoysia fairways, the impeccably maintained course provides enjoyable, challenging golf for players of all ages and skill levels. bigcreekgolf.com Twin Lakes Golf Course is a semi-private par 70 course, where rolling Bermuda grass fairways skirt ponds and other hazards to test golfers’ skills. The front nine is notable for tight, tree-lined fairways with true dog-leg bends. The back nine widens as the terrain steepens, providing uphill and downhill lies that must be negotiated. twinlakesgolfofmh.com

HIKING AND BIKING

Hiking and mountain biking in the Ozarks give outdoor lovers the opportunity to take in the beautiful views with varying levels of difficulty. Nearby hiking trails include Big Bluff Trail and Bull Shoals Lakeside Trail at Bull Shoals-White River State Park. Other trails include Oakridge Mountain Bike Trail and Dogwood Trail in Lakeview; Rush Mountain Mining Loop Trail, Woodland Edge Trail and Creek Bottom Trail near Yellville; and Ozark Highlands Trail beginning near Norfork. Many of the local parks also have run/walk trails many residents enjoy including Clysta Willett Park, McCabe Park and Cooper Park. ASU-Mountain Home will complete its new walking and biking trail in the first part of 2022. For mountain biking, check out Panther Bay Loop at David’s Trail, Oakridge Mountain Bike Trail at Bull Shoals-White River State Park or the Pigeon Creek Trail System, both located along Lake Norfork. Syllamo Mountain Bike Trail is just south of Mountain Home with five loops of varying levels.

HUNTING

There is no shortage of game for the hunting enthusiast around Mountain Home. White-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey and other species are numerous in the area, providing superb hunting on public lands. Land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is available for in-season hunting. Hunting is strictly prohibited in public parks. The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission maintains a repository of information on permits, hunting seasons, game zones and other important information. AGFC manages certain land as Wildlife Management Areas and operates several Nature Information Centers in the state. The Fred Berry Conservation Education Center on Crooked Creek is one of four Arkansas Game & Fish Conservation Education Centers. These centers are free of charge and suitable for all ages.

Ozarks composed of weaving stretches attracting bikers from all over. Nearby is the Sylamore Scenic Byway and is a more leisurely option cruising through river communities. If you’re up for an adventure, check out Arkansas Scenic 7 Byway. This nationally recognized route runs almost the length of the entire state. Just a short drive west of Mountain Home is the Twisted Lady, Jasper Disaster, Back Roads Run and Moonshine Run just to name a few. DOWNTOWN DISTRICT

— DESTINATION DOWNTOWN FIND YOUR FUN IN THE CITY’S ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT

The Mountain Home entertainment district, dubbed The District, became the first entertainment district in Arkansas. Thanks to the new entertainment district, adults can take their beer, wine or mixed drink with them from venues such as Rapp’s Barren Brewing Company, Stories Whiskey Bar and Crush Wine Bar to be consumed in the boundaries of The District. The District is bringing new life to the downtown area with a steady increase in business, activity and community engagement. No matter your brand of fun, The District is here to please and is home to the city’s most exciting new independent retailers and boutiques such as Magnolia Studio, Gregory Jewelers, Muse Salon & Boutique and Shiny Lime Hair Studio. In between stops, feed your appetite for fresh, local fare at Rio Burrito or The Fork.

HEALTHCARE

— HEALTH AND WELLNESS MOUNTAIN HOME HEALTHCARE TREATS YOU LIKE FAMILY The quality of any community can be measured by its healthcare, and on this metric, Baxter Regional is truly the heart of Mountain Home. Serving all manner of patients with cutting-edge medical technology, Baxter Regional is a hub for medical expertise in North Central Arkansas, providing the compassionate, individual attention of a hometown hospital. Baxter Regional has formed a stellar reputation for care and is a leader among the state’s healthcare systems. Its progressive mission ensures the best care available delivered in the friendly, hometown atmosphere of its 500,000-squarefoot Mountain Home hospital and throughout the 20+ clinics in the surrounding communities. No matter where you live or visit here, expert medical care is well within reach. The healthcare system — which at 1,800 employees is the largest employer in North Central Arkansas deploying the latest technology — Baxter Regional has gained recognition as one of Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work and Arkansas Business Best Places to Work three years in a row. Baxter Regional has garnered a reputation as one of the nation’s 50 best cardiac surgery hospitals and is ranked within the nation’s top 100 rural and community hospitals.

A recent crowning achievement was BRMC earning ANCC Magnet Recognition® for its quality of nursing care. The global designation, awarded in 2020, is one of only five in Arkansas and the first in Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri. Never content to rest on its laurels, the hospital board and its active foundation have pushed the envelope of the future adding new facilities and services to better serve the dynamic needs of the population. Recent additions include a 23,000-square-foot, $8.7 million outpatient surgical center, designed by its physician-owners, opened in February 2021; and a forthcoming 33,000-square-foot cancer center which broke ground

“A lot of people looking to move to Mountain Home, one of the first things they check on, besides the lakes and the rivers, is the availability of quality healthcare. Boy we’ve got it, and we’re going to keep it.” Lang Zimmerman, Baxter Regional Board of Directors member

in August. When completed, the facility will feature 200 doctors and nurses providing comprehensive oncology care throughout the $15 million complex. Baxter Regional is a cornerstone of the region, and its reach touches the lives of countless people, be it providing fulfilling professional careers or standing vigil over intensely personal moments. From its yellow army of cheerful volunteers to its experienced front-line healthcare heroes, Baxter Regional’s service to the community reaches many and serves all, creating a healthier Mountain Home one patient, one family at a time.

EDUCATION

— ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE MOUNTAIN HOME SCHOOLS RATE HIGH FOR QUALITY The quality of life in any community starts with the quality of its school system, and on this measurement, Mountain Home shines. From diversity of school choice to innovative programming, learners can enrich their knowledge and accelerate their growth from kindergarten through a college degree without ever leaving town. The Mountain Home School District (mhbombers.com) is the largest in the Twin Lakes area, serving more than 4,000 students across primary, middle and secondary grades. The Bombers balance extracurriculars with academics, consistently scoring above state and national averages on standardized achievement tests, ACT and advanced placement tests and state benchmark exams. The school system works hand in hand with the local business community to provide students internship opportunities and prepare them for the rigors of college, the military or the workforce after graduation. Other public school districts in the area include Cotter, Norfork, Flippin and Yellville-Summit. Mountain Home Christian Academy (mountainhomechristianacademy.com), a private faith-based institution, offers another educational option for students in grades pre-K through 12. Small class sizes here provide individual attention in a caring, faithcentered environment.

Arkansas State University-Mountain Home (asumh.edu), also makes its home here. Rated the No. 2 community college in the nation by Wallethub in 2019 and named in the top 150 community colleges in the nation three consecutive times by the Aspen Institute, this open-access, two-year campus is part of the Arkansas State University system. The university offers degrees through the A-State Degree Center, as well a list of proficiency certificates, associate degrees, adult education and workforce training through its School of Health Sciences, School of Business and Technology, and the School of Arts and Sciences. Partnering with local industry, the institution customizes its training programs to create the workforce of the future. And, through its cultural center, The Sheid, ASUMH brings concerts, exhibitions, theatrical performances and speakers to Mountain Home, enriching the entire community.

“The Bomber legacy is so strong. I see it daily in the ways our community continues to embrace us and help us provide world-class learning opportunities for our area’s young people.” Dr. Jake Long, Superintendent, Mountain Home School District

The city of Mountain Home demonstrates its commitment to student success via the Mountain Home Promise Scholarship, which pays ASUMH tuition and fees for graduates of Mountain Home High School. Students also have the opportunity to take concurrent classes while still in high school, saving families thousands of dollars in education costs. Lifelong learning is also supported by Mountain Home’s stunning Donald W. Reynolds Library, a centerpiece of literacy, programming and a source of great community pride.
