PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to our 2021 edition of The Messenger! We enthusiastically present this year’s issue, which highlights ways our signature programs and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and math) initiatives are creating unique learning opportunities that prepare young women for their futures by empowering them to be changemakers and influencers for what’s next, both academically and in life!

With more than 170 years of Mercy tradition, we celebrate a long history of providing transformative learning and faith-strengthening experiences for generations of young women. We strive to prepare all students, as witnessed through so many of our alumnae, to be active participants and contributors in a world that is literally changing daily with new inventions, innovations and perspectives of the 21st century. Simply stated, we have evolved so that our students may remain involved. Yes, times are changing. We, too, are changing to reflect new educational strategies and practices. As the world moves from the information age to an age of analysis, it is imperative for students to have access to cutting-edge resources as well as the confidence to discover new ways to positively impact and use information to address an ever-changing landscape in both their personal and professional relationships. Educational structure and the definition of space are also transforming. In continuing to fulfill Sisters of Mercy

Foundress Catherine McAuley’s vision to “show your instructions in action as much as you can,” we champion an academic environment rich with experiential learning and activities that inspire creativity and engagement — one where students are encouraged to explore their ideas and find solutions to real-world issues in new, innovative learning spaces that provide a combination of cross-curriculum resources for endless possibilities! Like Catherine McAuley, who began her journey in Ireland over 200 years ago, Mount St. Mary Academy will continue to forge the way in providing excellence in academics to young women while imbuing the universal truths of Catholic and Mercy values in all we do. As our faculty expands and stretches the minds of our young women through new learning opportunities, our campus learning spaces are poised to strengthen engagement and collaboration, and to meet the holistic needs of our school community. With all said, the one constant that remains are our Catholic and Mercy values — the foundation from which we base all learning and that enables our students to meet the future “full steam ahead” with compassion, integrity and wisdom!

Values are everywhere in the little things. Like when they talk about the intrinsic worth of each person, that compelled me to raise my children as individuals, as people.”

Biblical versions, mind you, but the kind that walk the earth, the flesh-and-blood variety that sit next to you at church or stroll by in the grocery store. In fact, she’s had too many encounters with them not to believe in their existence and the capacity they have for blessing those around them. “I want to say this without crying,” she said. “God’s been looking out for me; he always has.” Chachere’s angels have taken many forms through the years. When she was born at what was then St. Elizabeth’s Mercy Hospital, her unmarried mother insisted on giving her up for adoption, moving a flock of angels to action. “The Sisters of Mercy kept me in that hospital for over three months while they could find someone that they trusted to adopt me,” Chachere said. “If this happened today, you’re talking about newspaper articles, court cases, legal ramifications. Can you imagine a 3-month-old infant staying in a nursery? “But they cared for me. Matter of fact, when I graduated, one of them actually took an ad out in the yearbook and congratulated me. I always say I’m a Mercy Baby; the Sisters of Mercy saved me.” Chachere’s encounter with angels continued during her growing up and education. There was the parishioner at Little Rock’s St. Bartholomew Church, one of the few predominantly Black Catholic parishes in the state, who made it his mission to help African American girls in the congregation afford Mount St. Mary. And once in school, the teachers and administrators all showed their halos at various times during her four years there. “I appreciated Mount so much. I didn’t realize it at the time, but they were giving me the tools that I needed to have a complete life,” she said. “The Mercy Values are everywhere in the little things. Like when they talk about the intrinsic worth of each person, that compelled me to raise my children as individuals, as people. “A lot of people raise their children to be little versions of themselves, but I listened to

mine from day one to tried and assess their personalities and give them what each one of them needed. And they have exceeded all expectations in life as a result.” Rooted in these principles, Chachere said her Mount education not only taught her the academic content she needed but instilled her with the leadership and self-confidence her professional life would require. What would ultimately lead to a career in IT began with a BASIC language class taught by Sister M. Fintan Killian during her sophomore year. She’s now a senior business systems designer for UAMS and an adjunct professor for UA Little Rock. “I have been at UAMS for 27 years, and I’ve been the only woman and the only person of color all that time until we just hired a gentleman of Hispanic descent,” she said. “And I’ll tell you, Mount did such a phenomenal job preparing me for that. They gave you support, but it wasn’t cuddly, baby-stepping you along. It was the expectation that I needed to do my best and take the support that I needed. It gave me the confidence that it’s OK to be less than perfect, but to strive for perfection.” It is said that the only people who can’t see angels are the ones who fail to look for them, and the same is true with Chachere and her fellow Mount St. Mary alumnae. She’s become adept at spotting the markings of an MSM education, a phenomenon that came in handy about 10 years ago. “When I was on the Marketing Committee for the Mount, I told them the story about how a student was in class — I believe it was at the University of Tulsa — and she said something and the professor looked at her and asked her, ‘Did you go to Mount St. Mary?’ And she said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘I knew you must be a Mount Girl.’ “I said that should be our catchphrase: You must be a Mount Girl, which represents a woman who has a service heart, be it to family or community — a woman who is confident, who believes in high quality in every aspect of her life. That’s what being a Mount Girl means to me, and that’s what they continue to produce at Mount St. Mary.”

MIND GAMES L

IKE A LOT OF PARENTS, DEBORAH BALDWIN FOUND HERSELF INVOLVED WITH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES THROUGH THE PARTICIPATION IN CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES BY HER KIDS. Odyssey of the Mind was one such activity. “My daughters did this activity at Holy Souls, and I was a judge in that,” Baldwin said. “When my oldest went to Mount St. Mary, there was a mom who wanted to

start the Odyssey of the Mind program, but she had a family problem and asked me if I would do it. I thought, ‘I can do this for a couple years.’” That was 26 years ago, and Baldwin is still going strong as one of the coaches of Mount’s program. In that time, she’s helped lead the Belles to national and international prominence in Odyssey of the Mind competitions. The program’s highest placement, third at the world finals, came in 2015.

Baldwin credits students’ loyalty to the activity as one component of its sustained success. “Over this many years, I think I only had two or three students who chose not to continue,” she said. “I think it’s the level of commitment to the program and to each other that makes the difference.” The competition revolves around problem solving. Teams are given their choice of five problems to solve with

“OM really supports thinking of things in different ways,” she said. “I’m an art student, and it has really helped my art. I want to use materials for other than their intended purpose. I’ll look at a plastic tub and think, ‘That would be perfect to make something out of,’ even though it’s so crazy and it’s such a weird way of thinking.” The process also teaches team members to leverage each other’s personal strengths toward a common goal. Baldwin said this naturally leads to greater respect among team members as each brings an essential skillset to apply to the problem, without which the team is not as successful. “They learn things about encouraging each other, how to forgive each other when they screw up, how to be patient with people who don’t have their same skillset, how to teach each other,” she said. “One of the things OM prepares girls for in any field they go into is how to interpret problems.

certain conditions such as having to use specific materials or elements as part of the solution. Teams create skits to address the problem; the more creative and complete the performance, the more points the team is awarded. There is also an extemporaneous aspect where the team doesn’t know the problem until they enter the room with the judges and must make up a solution on the fly, again incorporating any elements or special

twists. The process is complicated by using elements which at first glance appear to have nothing to do with the problem at hand. “OM really likes to use things for a purpose other than what they were created for,” said Lucy Nimmo ’22, a third-year Odyssey of the Mind participant. “OM really makes you work smarter, not harder.” The benefit of the activity, Nimmo said, is how it changes the way one sees problems and potential solutions.

“People usually go for the yes/no, black-and-white answer to things. But we re-read the problem all the time, getting out and looking at it again and again to see if we are analyzing it correctly. You also have to learn how to plan, how to schedule, how to prioritize, how to delegate. Which are, of course, all the things that one uses in the workplace all the time.” Nimmo credits the activity with greatly enhancing her time at Mount St. Mary through a myriad of experiences that will serve her well into the future. “It took a second to adjust because OM really teaches you to think outside of the box, and I was used to more structured activities in middle school,” she said. “OM showed me a different way to look at problems and how to best fix them. It helped me open up, and motivated me to think differently.” FALL 2021

OUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY TURNS 171 THIS YEAR, BUT YOU WOULDN’T KNOW IT TOURING HER HALLS AND CLASSROOMS.

Everywhere you look, you see blinking monitors and newfangled teaching aids with a cutting-edge curriculum that speaks to the latest in the sciences and technology, balanced by a healthy dose of the arts. It’s called STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts, math), and few schools do it better than the Mount. Every year, hundreds of well-rounded, highly educated graduates emerge from the academic rigor of this curriculum, ready to continue their educational journey and take their place as the leaders of tomorrow. “STEAM fields have expanded greatly in a short period of time and are a desirable field for many of our graduates,” said Sara Jones, MSM principal. “As a result, we see STEAM as vital to our role in preparing our girls to enter the workforce with relevant knowledge that will allow them prime opportunities for growth. “We have utilized the STEAM approach for many years through a curriculum that teaches real-world applications. Our departments have designed crosscurricular projects to enhance connections among fields of content, and MSM is committed to creating more STEAM learning opportunities for our students through additional programs and relevant curriculum revision.” While science and the arts are often considered diametrically opposed to one another, Mount educators have proven this is not the case. Jenny Moses should know; the school’s speech and theatre instructor is a former math teacher, giving her a front-row seat to the developmental interplay between the disciplines. “I think science and the arts dovetail nicely together; they strengthen each other,” she said. “If I am looking at it from a mathematics standpoint, sometimes we get so analytic and linear with our mathematical processes that we forget the way to find solutions is to use creativity and to think of problems in a different way. Creativity in approaching math problems is extremely important in these cases. “Coming at it from the art side, you can be as creative as you want to be, but unless you’ve got some logic and some ability to think linearly, you’re not going to get it to the stage. That can be literally building some stairs and needing to be able to figure out the geometry to make it happen, or scheduling and keeping everybody on track.” Gabriella Angtuaco ’23 said she came into Mount St. Mary more science-focused, but her high school arts experience has her now thinking of possibly pursuing FALL 2021

SELECTED ACTIVITIES: Volleyball, National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, Spanish Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Mountie Messengers

How have the Mount’s programs helped you develop in the sciences?

The teachers are one of my favorite parts of the program because they put their heart and soul into everything they do. I learned so much because they give so much of themselves into what I’m learning. They try really hard, so it makes me want to compete and succeed, too. I’ve always had a real hunger for knowledge, and these teachers are really good at keeping up with that.

How does the all-girl environment enhance learning?

For most things in the STEAM field, to learn is to do. In a coed environment, it seems males end up doing a lot of the doing while the girls take notes in the lab. Here, it’s given me the opportunity to learn hands-on, which is something I likely wouldn’t have had in a school with boys. I think I would have just stepped aside and let them do the grunt work while I did the theoretical work.

What has that done for your confidence and personal growth?

As a freshman, I was really a pushover, like, everyone-else-could-go-before-me kind of thing. And I was okay with it. I was complacent. This academic setting and this ability to learn hands-on has really allowed me to grow that confidence that I bring into the academic field into other parts of my life. My classes and experience have given me much more confidence to speak up for myself.

How have the Mercy Values shaped you in this journey?

Integrating my education with the Mercy Values has helped me to be both confident and compassionate in pretty much everything I do. While I am learning and being adventurous and gaining knowledge, I’m also remembering to be thankful and grateful for each opportunity I have.

music once she gets to college. She said the quality of the instruction has helped improve her as a student in other ways, too. “It helps me to be more well-rounded, so I can look at things from several different perspectives, which I find to be very important,” she said. “I’ve figured out what my passions are, and more than that, being more well-rounded and seeing things from different perspectives shows me I don’t just have to be one thing. “Mount St. Mary has a great nurturing environment, so you can really feel at home. You feel more comfortable stepping out and doing other things you haven’t done before. I think that has really helped me grow as a person.” Carrie Burkhead, technology and media specialist, has also witnessed this interplay through student projects that leverage both sides of the student brain. “Students putting together a news program for the school learn problem-solving skills,” she said. “Critical thinking is essential to the process; they have to be very resourceful. They go through the creative process of writing the script, and when the anchors review it, if it doesn’t make sense, they will edit the script.” The school has leveraged this melded technology and creativity in various ways in school operations, as well. Acceptance letters to prospective students is one example. “This is maybe our fourth year of sending an acceptance video from our principal instead of a traditional acceptance letter,” Burkhead said. “We personalize it to the recipient, and my multimedia students put together a B-roll at the end showing a day in the life at MSM. I provide some guidance there, but it’s completely student-produced.”

Keeping the curriculum ahead of the curve can be challenging, given how dynamic and expensive these fields can be. Still, MSM has shown a commitment to that process. After volunteering for 15 years as a cross country coach, Captain Scott Pursley has reinstated the school’s robotics program, which has been inactive for several years, in his first year on MSM’s chemistry and physics faculty. “Our girls are going to learn by doing. For students to understand the science of something, they first have to handle it,” he said. “That’s why, with the Robotics Club we’re bringing back this fall, I’m not so much interested in entering larger competitions, because they tend to require teams of 15 kids working on one robot. Well, you know what’s really going on? It’s really just one kid working on the robot, or maybe two, and the other 13 aren’t learning much at all. “The trick with robotics and technology is you want the kids to teach each other. So the approach I’m going to take is each kid has a robot. She’s going to have to build it and code it and encounter those failures that naturally occur. And she’s going to come to me, ‘Captain Pursley, please fix my program!’ And I’m going to say, ‘Go talk to Susie. She’s fixed that problem. She’ll show you how to do it.’” Pursley’s tough-love approach to academics falls right in step with the school’s philosophy of teaching students how to think as more important than memorization of material. Robin Kanatzar ’09, a software engineer with Betclic living in France, could not agree more. “The best thing MSM taught me was how to learn new material quickly and efficiently,” she said. “In honors and IB classes, we constantly had new material

Was it intimidating getting involved in the arts at the Mount?

I had some acting confidence; my middle school was so small, I always got the lead. When I got to Mount St. Mary though, I realized I wasn’t the best one here. I learned a lot more that way. I also had less confidence in my singing initially, but now it’s much better.

What teacher was most responsible for bringing that out in you?

Ms. Chelsea Allman, choral director, and Ms. Jenny Moses, my theater teacher, both helped me. Ms. Moses taught me through musical theater, and Ms. Allman taught me the core structure of choir.

How have the arts helped you develop?

I think they develop confidence. When you’re performing, you have to fake it until you make it because people can recognize fear. I’ve learned to focus not only on my voice but the power of my voice and performance. That helped me develop confidence; I talk to more people now.

How do you plan to use your voice, so to speak?

Being Hispanic — my dad’s Columbian, my mom is from Peru — I want to stand up for my ethnicity and diversity and be accepting of all people.

What advice do you have for a middle schooler reading this?

I would tell them I was once terrified of high school, and I didn’t know how to deal with any of it. But you are what you make of any experience; if you don’t give it your best, it will never be a positive experience for you.

CURRENT ROLE: Attending U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland

How did you come to choose the Mount?

I went to eStem Public Charter School. Leaving that and choosing Mount was definitely a big decision for me and something that took a couple of months to decide. Ultimately, I thought that Mount would do a better job of challenging me and developing me. And, I loved the idea of going to an all-girls school. I chose Mount because I thought that it would give me an opportunity to not only expand my own horizons but kind of help to expand some of my friends, too. Also, I had the opportunity to take science every single year. That was something that really mattered to me in a school.

At what age did you decide to go into the military?

The military hadn’t ever been something I’d considered until the Naval Academy. And I found them just by getting a flyer in the mail for their summer program.

Seriously?

Yeah, that was it. I had already figured out that I wanted to study cybersecurity, but there aren’t a lot of undergraduate degrees for cybersecurity. The Academy had a cyber operations program that was newer, but also it had really great accreditations. That seemed really interesting.

How did the Mount prepare you for what you’re doing now?

As a freshman, I was studying Honors Algebra II and was the only freshman in a class full of juniors. That was one of the more defining moments for me in terms of building my confidence and learning to be myself. That played a big part in me learning to use my own voice. Then I had opportunities to explore on my own. I did robotics for a couple of years while I was at Mount, and I really, really enjoyed that. I was allowed to take AP Computer Science kind of on the side, and that helped me figure out some things about where I wanted to go for my future.

we had to learn in a short period of time. Knowing how to do that has been invaluable for me in my career because the world of software and technology changes so rapidly. There’s always something new to absorb and master. “This skill also came in handy when I moved to France and had to learn the language as quickly as possible. Books say you learn a new language at a rate of about five words a day, but during my first six months in France, it felt more like 20. For a while there, my apartment was covered in piles of French flashcards.” Summer Khairi ’12 is another alumna who said the Mount’s approach, combined with a challenging STEAM curriculum, helped her grow in ways that are still invaluable to her career where she is assistant professor and clinical coordinator for UAMS in Little Rock. “I already knew that I liked science and math before I got to the Mount, but they taught me more than that,” she said. “The Mount really taught me how to study, and they made me really good at time management. I was in basketball and soccer in high school, and they were like, ‘Well great, but you still have to get good grades to play those sports.’ “No one’s just going to do stuff for you; you have to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations if you want to excel. That really helped me organize my life, and as a result, I’ve been way more prepared for college and my career compared to all my friends who didn’t go to Mount.” Principal Jones said one of the most powerful elements of the Mount’s curriculum is a dedicated

complement of alumnae willing to provide mentoring and advisement that are so critical to women in STEAM professions. “Women make up a little more than a quarter of those employed in STEAM fields, and there are relatively few female role models in STEAM careers,” she said. “This can lead to decreased confidence in those subjects that lend themselves well to success in STEAM, such as math. We make a concerted effort to connect our girls with alumnae in these fields and show them that these career paths are possible in spite of being historically male-dominated.” Millie Allgood ’22 is planning to pursue a medical career after graduation. She said such input from alumnae is an extension of what she considers the most valuable aspect of the Mount’s learning environment. “The thing that I really appreciate about the all-girls environment, in comparison to a coed environment, is that everybody’s on the same page,” she said. “At Mount, the teachers want you in their AP classes; it’s not some exclusive club that only the smartest of the smart can be in. So every girl is there to learn and to get better, and it’s a lot easier to find a learning community that wants to help each other when everybody has that mindset. “This is important because a big part of the AP program at Mount is teamwork. I don’t think I did a single project by myself; it was always that you were working with others and everybody was putting in the work. You’re not having to do your part and half of someone else’s part. When everybody is putting in that maximum effort, you get the maximum outcome.”

“ We make a concerted effort to connect our girls with alumnae in (STEAM) fields and show them that these career paths are possible in spite of being historically maledominated.”

In my senior year at Mount, we had to do a project specializing in chemistry or biology. I was a chemistry kid, but we had to do a cross-disciplinary project with someone from biology. We had to come up with a project together that included things both of us learned, and that was probably one of the most relevant things. It was kind of a mini version of what I ended up doing for the next 10 years of my life. When I was at Mount, I took chemistry, biology and physics. I ended up specializing in biophysics, so all my studies in graduate school, and even to an extent now, are very cross-disciplinary. The fact that I have an emphasis in a variety of sciences straight from Mount was really helpful.

Compare yourself coming in as a freshman and going out as a senior from the Mount.

I came into Mount so quiet. I was not good at talking to people. I took drama and theatre arts when I was there, and I still think about how much that class really brought me out of my shell because you had to perform in front of people. Just getting to be creative, working on a team and doing something that wasn’t science-y at all was so much fun. By my senior year, I was completely different. I still talk to a lot of my former classmates.

As a mentor to young women, what have been your messages over the years?

There’s this cliché that scientists aren’t social. They don’t talk to people. They sit in a lab by themselves. Not only does that not appeal to a lot of girls, it’s actually not good if you’re stuck in a lab and not talking to anyone. Those aren’t the kinds of scientists who I think do the best work.

What would you say to a middle-school girl about pursuing the sciences with Mount?

I think it’s so important that if you find science interesting, you need to learn the things you can do and see how much variety there is. There’s so much interesting stuff that you can do in science that helps people. You can have fun and be girly — you can do all of these things and actually be an excellent scientist because of it, not just in spite of it. FALL 2021

and the work here has taken on added urgency. Variants are creeping across the country, and a rattled nation is divided over what to do about it. Lives are very much at stake. Were this a movie, the facility might be embedded at the Pentagon or hidden in a deep underground bunker at an undisclosed location. But it’s not. The facility, the FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), sits in the bright sunlight of Jefferson County, at a speck on the map called Jefferson, Arkansas, north of Pine Bluff. And it’s here that two Mount Girls, Drs. Ellen Jones ’98 and Kelly Jones Mercer ’93, do their part to save the world through science. “COVID-19 has been a game-changer,” Jones said. “As expected, it is a huge concern for us at the FDA/NCTR. Personally, it has been exciting to be a part of the FDA working on COVID-19, although it has been equally frustrating and challenging. I think we all can attest to feeling impatient with the speed of research at times like these. “However, I also believe we have been fortunate with the progress at this point, and I am inspired daily by the continued work and commitment of the scientists involved.” “During this pandemic, the FDA has been actively investigating COVID-19 to provide the U.S. with safe and effective treatments and mitigation strategies,” echoed Mercer. “I am proud of and inspired by my colleagues across the FDA and in academia who have achieved so much for the good of the people.” Both scientists were turned on to their future careers early. Jones’ father was a physician, while Mercer’s interest was piqued by an Algebra II class — ironically, a subject she didn’t particularly like — while attending Mount St. Mary. “I was not particularly fond of mathematics, but I did enjoy solving algebraic equations, and this love of solving problems logically started me down the path of science,” she said. “Later, following my sophomore year in college, I participated in a summer internship in research at UAMS, which solidified my love for benchwork. I really enjoyed planning and

Discovering that cancer and COVID-19 patients shared a similar anti-inflammatory response, her work quickly shifted. Jones also got her start in benchwork looking for a way to unravel the mysteries of cancer. “The summer before my senior year in college, I met with one of the scientists in the department, Dr. Richard Drake,” she said. “He was about to move to Virginia and shift his research focus to incorporate innovative technologies in the hopes of identifying biomarkers indicative of diseases, such as cancer, at their earliest stages. His lab would be one of the earliest labs to adopt these approaches, which I found exciting. “Once I started graduate school, working in his lab I could see firsthand how science could impact medicine to help others, and I was hooked.” Jones and Mercer joined the NCTR in 2016 and 2020, respectively, and have shared the highs and lows that come with the territory in research.

“ I would tell girls to

take their education seriously, that a strong work ethic established in high school serves you well later in life.” “In my career at this point, I am most proud of the imaging facility that we have built at NCTR,” Jones said. “I have worked in several labs around the country and had a lot of different scientific experiences, but this has been the most challenging, yet rewarding. It is a technology that is growing rapidly, and the work we have done in just five years at NCTR is very promising. “Globally, the impact of COVID-19 has been devastating, of course. As a scientist, the misinformation has been alarming and emphasizes the importance of not only addressing the falsities head on but also in providing a better overall understanding of science to the community. Teaching the correct science is going to be pivotal.” Mercer said she can draw a straight line between her time at the Mount and her successes, but more importantly, how the school taught her to rebound from setbacks. “I ran for student body president, and this experience was completely out of my comfort zone at the time. I did not win,” she said. “Still, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to try something new and to fail. Both are common in life, and these types of experiences really prepare your mind and your heart for the larger stages in life. “One of the most frustrating and humbling experiences for a scientist is

to propose a hypothesis only to find that your hypothesis is not correct. However, these seemingly ‘failed’ experiments are very important in the scientific method. Not all proposed hypotheses can be correct; knowing this to be true, I carry on by using the knowledge gained to ask a better question.” The scientists both agreed that the leadership development they experienced at Mount St. Mary was as vital to what they are doing now as the academic foundation they gained. In a career field where men soundly outnumber women, being able to speak up for oneself is a critical element of success. “Doing work that could potentially benefit millions of people, it feels exciting,” Jones said. “At this stage in my career I don’t find it intimidating, per se; I find the pressure to succeed and excitement that it could be impactful supersedes all else. “As far as the role of females, we can all see how far females have progressed in the workforce, in politics and in leadership positions. The possibilities are endless. I would tell girls in elementary school they can accomplish most anything with hard work and dedication. I’d also say don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish a dream or goal. No one knows what you are capable of but you.” “I concur with Ellen, I would tell girls to take their education seriously, that a strong work ethic established in high school serves you well later in life,” Mercer said. “I would also tell them to be patient in times of trial; my career path had many twists and turns, and at times, it appeared my goals would not be attainable. But I did get there. As it turns out, the most difficult obstacles in life are what prepare you for where God has called you to serve.” FALL 2021

HEN MELISSA SAMPSON ’14 ARRIVED AT MOUNT ST. MARY, THE FIRST THING SHE SIGNED UP FOR WAS THE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL TEAM.

She made the squad, but when she got injured, her future in athletics was very much called into question. But in a most ironic twist, the injury also opened up a career in athletics that has already taken her farther professionally than volleyball ever would have. Mending from her high school injury, she was exposed to the school’s athletic training program, led by Jeff Stotts. “My first major exposure to working with Jeff was one-on-one for rehab stuff for that injury,” she said. “At the time, he had a student who was helping him, and so from there, I started helping out.” Sampson was one of a handful of students who made up the Student Athletic Training Program, a group Stotts launched to gain some extra hands while teaching skills to help them be effective when tending to the Belles student-athletes. “It was initially just kind of for fun,” Stotts said. “I’ve been at the Mount for 13 years, and my first year, I didn’t have anybody. My second year was when I had my first person following me around, learning, helping me out. This will be year 12 of having some kind of structure to what we’re doing. “We progressed from one lone student to a club that’s recognized by the MSM Athletic Department as an organization. We have a true Student Athletic Trainers Club, and as of last year, I am now also teaching an Intro to Sports Medicine class that the girls can opt to take.” The class is open to club members and non-club members alike and draws on Stott’s medical training and experience. “The class goes in conjunction with anatomy,” he said. “It’s a really good way to offer an opportunity for our girls to

have firsthand experience working with athletes, learning bedside manner and other characteristics that are going to be applicable to the world of medicine, not just sports medicine. “Obviously, it’s taught by an athletic trainer, so I have a sports medicine slant, but I really wanted to show them what falls under the umbrella of sports medicine and that the skills they’re learning can be applied to any medical field.” Both the club and the one-semester class have been very popular, especially among girls who have an eye on medicine or physical therapy school. And, here and there, a stray student has emerged who’s looking at athletic training as a career. “It’s really a growing field for women, even though it was historically dominated by men,” Stotts said. “When I went to grad school to get my master’s in athletic training, in fact, my class size was 15, and I was one of two guys in the program.

“I also want to say, when I went into grad school, I noticed most of my schoolmates had experience dating all the way back to high school. That was not the case for me. I didn’t decide to pursue this career path until I was in college, so I was behind. I definitely want this class and club to help Mount students build that foundation early.” Which brings us back to Sampson, who so fell in love with athletic training that after graduating from the Mount, she majored in it at the University of Tulsa. After that, she served a one-year internship with the University of Washington and a two-year fellowship with the University of Arkansas football program. She’s now on the athletic training staff at Colorado State University. “I honestly had no idea what an athletic trainer was before I got to high school. You hear more about physical therapists, which are similar, but getting to work oneon-one with Jeff, I thought this was cool and what I wanted to do,” she said. “I’m very early in my career, but I’d like to stay at the collegiate level. There’s something about D1 athletics that appeals to me; the level of competitiveness is something I enjoy being around. One thing I value about the profession is the hands-on role I can have with studentathletes on a day-to-day basis, much like what Jeff does at the high school level. I see myself working in a clinical aspect for a good bit of time.”

HE N AS K E D H OW H E CONCEIVED SUCH STATUES AS “DAVID” AND “PIETA,” MICHELANGELO IS CREDITED WITH SAYING, “THE SCULPTURE IS ALREADY COMPLETE WITHIN THE MARBLE BLOCK, BEFORE I START MY WORK. It is already there; I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” Kelley Donovan Vogelgesang ’03 could say the same thing about an industrial slab of vertical concrete. Once merely functional, Vogelgesang turned the massive surface into a brilliant mural with the help of the entire student body of Our Lady of the Holy Souls School in Little Rock, where she’s the art teacher.

The project, which looms over the playground of the longtime Catholic school, made manifest Vogelgesang’s oftrepeated philosophy to her students about the role of art in everyday life. “I always tell my students, art is a form of problem solving and critical thinking,” she said. “And first and foremost, all art is storytelling.” For this particular project, which was completed during the 2017–2018 school year, the goal was to tell the story of the 90-plus-year-old school and the parish community in which it resides. Despite growing up there herself, Vogelgesang didn’t want the design to be merely her interpretation of what Holy Souls meant

and stood for, so she enlisted the ideas of others. Roughly 500 of them, in fact, or one from each Wabbit in each grade, about what they liked best about Holy Souls. “I wanted everyone to have ownership. I wanted everyone to have some pride in it,” she said. “The kids had the opportunity to tell their story, to figure out what symbols and what images they wanted in that mural to represent their school and their art. It’s kind of a Where’s Waldo thing; you can find a basketball for the kid who is drawn to the sports program, there’s a giant ruler, there’s a cheerleader.” Vogelgesang melded the images into a giant collage and painted an outline of the work on the soaring concrete wall. Then,

every student was given a brush and told to paint a segment. The only rule was no two adjoining segments could be the same color. The collaborative end result is a work that, while simple, mimics the stained-glass windows of the church and has become a beloved focal point of the parish grounds. “Really, there’s absolutely nothing very complex or pretentious about it. It’s a super-simple formula,” Vogelgesang said. “But there’s a lot packed in, philosophically and technically, for art education.” The mural is just one expression of Vogelgesang’s innovation as a teacher. From outdoor classrooms to artwork created through modern multimedia, hers is a program that seeks to connect as many dots in students’ education as possible. “Art and science and art and technology are so incredibly hand-in-hand, and I think that is seriously overlooked in art classes,” she said. “I’ve had students ask if they could do stop-motion animation for an assignment instead of the traditional two-dimensional piece of paper, and it was a really interesting process. The younger generation is obviously much more tech-savvy, so being open to their ideas and seeing what they can come up with themselves

has been a really fun way to incorporate technology and different media.” Given all of this, you’d think Vogelgesang would have been at the top of her class throughout her educational years, but such was not the case. Formal education was difficult for her growing up, requiring extra time and patience from her teachers, including at Mount St. Mary where art was more of an escape than a strict course of study. Those experiences, combined with the caring example of her MSM mentors, still shape her perspective as a teacher. “I have some learning differences; I’ve always struggled with ADHD, and traditional school settings were really difficult for me. I know what it’s like to be pulled into a small group and have my test read aloud,” she said. “I know what it’s like to have modifications in my education, but I also know what it’s like to have teachers invest in me, like at the Mount. And, I know what it’s like to have an art program that is, in a lot of ways, a place for kids like me to thrive, where it doesn’t have to be so academic. “As a teacher, I think that’s something that has given me a lot of empathy for students who struggle a little bit more in school. I can look at them and be like, yep, I’ve been there.” FALL 2021

NYONE WHO THINKS A CATHOLIC GIRLS’ SCHOOL CAN’T HAVE FLAIR NEVER M E T K A T H Y S M I T H . In a sea of

houndstooth and blue, Smith was a few shakes of cayenne pepper, spicing up classic English lit for her students and bringing her own vibrant sense of life to her colleagues. “Back in the day, I loved fashion. I loved clothes. I think it was just kind of a shock at the Mount, you know?” she said. “The girls there, most don’t wear makeup and here I come, red lipstick, eye shadow, eyeliner, red acrylic nails. “I think it’s from being a child of the ‘60s. We used to call it putting your face on. As I told my students, ‘I don’t even go to the mailbox without my makeup on, girls.’” A warm, deep laugh follows, one of many that have echoed through her lifetime. “I just don’t think there was anybody quite like me at the time.” Smith started her teaching career at Conway High School at the tender age of 21. Four years later, she moved to North Little Rock and stayed in the district until the end of the millennium. “I’ve never wanted to do anything but teach English. I decided on my career in my senior year of high school,” she said. “I just loved my English teacher, and I loved the literature. I’ve never had a single regret of my chosen career.” Smith’s Mount St. Mary connection began with her daughter, Shana Nolen ’92, through which she got to know the quality of academics and befriended Sister Deborah Troillett ’73, former principal. At a social function, the Head Belle mentioned an opening on the staff and sweetened the deal by promising the former high school cheerleader she could coach Mount’s squad. It was too good to pass up, and Smith reported for duty in the fall of 1999. The impact, not unlike a lightning strike, was loud, bright and immediate. “I knew at the time it was a wonderful school. Of course, I didn’t know how wonderful, until I actually worked there,”

“ I’ve never wanted to do anything but teach English. I decided on my career in my senior year of high school.

she said. “But when I got my classroom, it was pretty bland. And I said, ‘This will not do.’ I went out and bought a bunch of feather boas, and I decorated my room with them. Then, it caught on in the department. “After that, whenever there’s anything special, we always wore these boas. We had The Order of the Boa; that was our little name for the English Department. My gosh, we used to do it sometimes at closing ceremonies. We might put crowns on. It was just fun.” Spunky hijinks and flashy get-ups aside, teaching was serious business. Over time, Smith would leverage her passion for her subject, particularly her forte of British literature, into improving the department. She introduced AP English classes (to date, enjoying a 93% pass rate) which led to

the International Baccalaureate Program where, for 15 years running, students achieved a 100% pass rate on final exams. “I am not afraid to toot my own horn or toot the English Department’s horns, believe me,” she said. “The English Department there has always been wonderful. I just don’t think they announced it from the rooftops the way I did.” Smith was honored twice with the Stephens Award for outstanding and inspirational teaching, and in 2011 was the inaugural recipient of the John and Patricia Bailey Family Distinguished Teaching Award. But even these prestigious titles paled in comparison to the one bestowed on her by her Mount colleagues. “I didn’t know about the name ‘Diva’ right away. I found out later it came from an employee in the finance department,” she said. “Her name was Nikki Hite; she was a ’95 graduate, and she named me Diva. It was like maybe a year or two after I got there because of how I pranced around or whatever. She’s darling, and it just stuck.” Yet all parties must come to a close, and the physical demands of the job eventually became too much. At 74, life is slower now, if no less fabulous for the career educator. Asked what stands out from her classroom adventures, The Diva has a ready answer. “I loved my students,” she said. “I want to say the girls made me want to be better every single day, just for them. And I’m going to miss them terribly.”

“ ... when I got my classroom, it was pretty bland. And I said, ‘This will not do.’ I went out and bought a bunch of feather boas, and I decorated my room with them.

STUDENTS

Student

Feature

Our incredible students are the heartbeat of our school community. Meet three of our current Mount Girls and discover what they really love about “the best school we know of.”

Anna Alyse Patterson ’23

Anna Alyse Patterson has always enjoyed being involved at the Mount. But last year, she and a friend took on a new project focusing on the student body in a very specific and important way. The two created Our Minds Matter (OMM), a mental health awareness club. “Both my friend and I have had first- and secondhand experiences with mental health challenges, especially during COVID-19,” she said. “It’s harder to reach out to people; in fact, some people never reach out. OMM focused on these issues and helped girls at Mount St. Mary talk about mental health resources, how to recognize symptoms and ways to support others.” The group epitomized the Mercy Values, Patterson said, in a way that was tailormade to help others. The value that stands out most to her: hospitality. “It helps me in everything I do to have the mindset to try my best to be kind to everyone and make them feel welcome,” she said. “I think MSM does a good job of teaching that.”

Lyla Tong ’24

There aren’t too many scenarios by which Lyla Tong was not going to attend Mount St. Mary. After all, there’s a long line of Mount Girls in her family going all the way back to her great-grandmother, Stella Chudy Cothran ’40. But even though her path may have been set for her early, now here, Tong is making her Mount educational experience her own. “Mount is like a second home to me. I really fit in here and thrive here,” she said. “You will definitely be able to find your people here.” A straight-A student and rising star on the volleyball team, Tong said she’s eager to resume working with her teachers directly after a year impacted by COVID-19. “I love all my classes and all my teachers,” she said. “They really care about the students; not just our academic welfare, but us as people. I think it’s really important for a good learning environment to have good relationships with your teachers.”

Moname Matute ’23

Balancing the classroom and the competitive athletic arena is a familiar trick for Moname Matute. She not only plays basketball and runs track for the Belles, but has also branched into lacrosse – all while maintaining a strong GPA. She said she thrives in Mount’s environment of high expectations. “The Mount environment is perfect for somebody like me who has always been very academically focused,” she said. “Coming from a middle school where everyone was on the same level to a high school where there are different levels has been a really nice challenge.” Matute also appreciates the ability to grow spiritually and express her faith in tangible actions that benefit others. “The Mercy Value I want to use throughout my life is service to the poor, sick and uneducated,” she said. “As a child, my parents made it a point to expose me to service, which made a significant impact on who I am today. I want to continue serving others, whether it be through my career, my church or other organizations.”

“The fundamental thing is that she was absolutely convinced that the Mount molded young ladies into being professional ladies and good mothers, that it built in them the highest level of character. She was so very dedicated to that,” Harrigan said. “That was their mission, and they were accomplishing “She said, ‘I want to give a scholarship to it, and they were on the leading edge the Mount to help kids get an education,’” of offering education to these girls in a Harrigan said as the emotion clogged his personal way, a caring way.” throat. “I said, ‘I got it. translated into that school. She was so dedicated to the school; she had such a love of the Mount. When she went there, a lot of the Sisters of Mercy were teaching there, of course, and she also had a great love for them.” Sherry also gets credit for establishing one of the fundamental events on the Mount calendar: the annual Dinner Belles fundraiser. “She was on the advisory board or something like that, went to a meeting in Oklahoma City and when she came walking back in the door, she said, ‘I have got the idea of ideas that perfectly fits the Mount,’” Harrigan recalled with a grin.

Above: Sherry Wilkins Wortsmith (third from bottom, on right) was a cheerleader supporting the Rockets through the ’62-’63 season.

“She brought it back, established it, got it going and the rest is history. The Dinner Belles thing was close to her heart. That was a big deal.” Cathey Henry, MSM director of donor giving, said the endowed scholarship was the perfect legacy of Sherry’s commitment to the school, its mission and especially its students. “It’s used as tuition assistance for a student,” she said. “They do not have to have a perfect GPA; the intention is to give a girl help to attend this great school. That’s what Sherry believed in, and I think that we’re blessed that people think about those things ahead of time because it is more meaningful. “For Sherry and Harrigan, it’s not about having your name on something; it’s to help someone else. Generations later, your grandchildren or great-grandchildren can go, ‘Wow! That was my grandmother. She did that.’ People will know that forever now because of somebody who was helped through this endowment.”

Planned giving can help make more dreams a reality for Mount St. Mary and its students. Remembering MSM in your will or trust to receive money, property, stock or other valuables is easy to set up and a great way to benefit the school. Contact Cathey Henry at (501) 476-3366 for more information.
