MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Wheeling Park District residents,
Bidding farewell to Summer 2023, let us take a moment to reflect on the incredible shared experiences at the amazing facilities Wheeling Park District has to offer. We hope you had the opportunity to enjoy our numerous concerts at the Performance Pavilion, attend our Unplug at the Park events, cool off at the Family Aquatic Center, play some golf at Traditions at Chevy Chase, or enjoy quality time in one of our beautiful parks.
As temperatures fall, excitement rises as the Wheeling Park District is once again delighted to share a season full of events, programs, and activities. From Fallapalozaa and Boonanza, to Day of the Dead 5K Family Walk/Run and Active Adult Trips, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Kick off the school year with our newest event, Back to School Bike Ride, where we partner with the Village of Wheeling to take a picturesque bike ride through the trails along the Des Plaines River. Beginning a new academic year, our dedicated team is eager to welcome our incoming Preschool and Before and After School Recreation students.
With the combined efforts of local businesses and organizations, explore and discover the wide array of resources available in our community, all under one roof, at the annual Active Adults Expo on October 5 and Health Fair on November 12. Stay warm and keep moving by visiting our Health and Fitness Center or participating in our wide range of athletic opportunities including golf, basketball, swim lessons, soccer, and dance! Lastly, don't forget to wrap up the year at our Thanksgiving Community Feast, Holiday Hoopla, and Happy Noon Year.
Let’s start this season with a collective commitment to creating more fun and enjoyable memories. We look forward to seeing you this fall.

LIGHTNING PREDICTION & WARNING SYSTEMS
By measuring the amount of electrical charge in the atmosphere, Thorguard Warning System predicts with a high degree of certainty the probability of a lightning strike within a covered area. This system warns guests and staff with a horn and strobe system when a lightning strike hazard is present. Areas served by Thorguard include Heritage Park, Family Aquatic Center, CRC and all adjacent areas and neighborhoods. The system is intended to warn guests and staff of probable lightning hazards in the area so lightning-related injuries and deaths can be avoided. Since Thorguard is a lightning prediction system, it is possible for the warning system to be activated even when weather conditions do not seem to indicate lightning is present. Be assured that these warnings are accurate and must be followed to ensure personal safety.
Two distinct signals sent out by Thorguard:
RED ALERT External warning horns blare for 15 seconds and strobe lights begin to blink. This signifies a lightning hazard in the area. All outdoor recreation activity should be suspended and guests and staff should seek appropriate shelter, preferably indoors. ALL CLEAR External warning horns give three consecutive blasts lasting 3-5 seconds each. This means the lightning hazard has left the area and it is safe to resume normal activities. Chevy Chase is protected under the WeatherBug lightning detection system.
