MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As 2023 draws to a close, I am grateful for all the memorable experiences in parks and recreation we were able to build together. Whether a volunteer, participant or guest of many of our events and programs, I want to thank you for having been an exceptional ambassador of our mission. Please join me in welcoming Claudia Fonseca as the District’s newest commissioner. Claudia is excited to use her knowledge of the District and her leadership skills to serve the Wheeling community in providing memorable experiences in parks and recreation. Additionally, two of our current commissioners were recently recognized at the Illinois Association of Park Districts' 2023 Best of the Best Gala for their dedication to serving our community. Cheri Klumpp’s remarkable 30-year tenure as commissioner has been marked by her commitment to our parks, leaving an impression on the district’s growth and successes. Likewise, Mike Burns, with his 10 years, has consistently advocated for the well-being and betterment of our parks and residents. This winter season is the perfect time to appreciate the wonders of our local parks while the snow peacefully covers the ground and provides a relaxing escape. After months of hard work, I am excited to announce that Childerley Park is now open following an extensive renovation! The park has transformed into a vibrant and welcoming space that the entire community can enjoy. With upgraded playgrounds, new walking trails, and improved green spaces, Childerley Park now offers an even more delightful outdoor experience for all. The Wheeling Park District is thrilled to announce that with the support of the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA), the construction of a greenhouse at the Community Recreation Center has been approved! This innovative project will provide a space for environmental education and community engagement that will further strengthen our commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents. The new year is a time for taking on exciting opportunities and new challenges. Whether you want to try out a new sport, hobby or recreational/fitness activity, I am sure you will find something that fits your needs at the Wheeling Park District. Please be sure to flip through this guide frequently for a current listing of upcoming programs, activities, and events to stay connected and engaged this winter season. Sincerely,

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL RECREATION 2023-2024 FOR FIELD, TARKINGTON, TWAIN AND WHITMAN STUDENTS ON ALL SCHOOL DISTRICT #21 STUDENT ATTENDANCE DAYS
STILL ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR With the cooperation of District 21, the Wheeling Park District has developed a before-and after-school program for working parents that provides quality care for children in grades K - 5 who attend Field, Tarkington, Twain, and Whitman schools. The program is committed to providing safe recreation activities, including games, crafts, sports, and homework/quiet time to counter the day’s educational activities. Parents may choose either before- or after-school care or both before- and after-school care. The Wheeling Park District Community Recreation Center (CRC) is where the program resides. Students using before-school care are dropped off at the CRC and bused to their home school. After-school care students are bussed from their home school to the CRC and should be picked up there. Wheeling Park District offers recreation programs at the CRC, such as swim lessons, art classes, and dance programs after school. Sign up for the BASR aftercare and an after-school recreation program, and our staff will work with each family to walk their child safely to their next activity! Registration for additional activities is not included in the price of the BASR program.

2024–2025 SCHOOL YEAR
PRESCHOOL
MY FIRST PRESCHOOL CLASS PRESCHOOL PREP Must be 2.5 before September 1, 2024 Social learning goes hand in hand with language development, a key task for our busy 2s. We enrich the day with songs, rhymes, stories, activity time, and art projects. This is a great way for children to learn how to be away from their parents and how to play with others. Learning is natural and easy with lots of choices and opportunities to explore. A parent or care-giver will be asked to attend the first class only. Students will be given priority registration into our 2025-2026 Preschool Program. Toilet training is required or a parent or care-giver must be available on-site to change the child's diaper. DAY

LIGHTNING PREDICTION LOCKER ROOMS court and all Park District buildings. The locker room is an amenity available & WARNING SYSTEMS REWARD PROGRAM By measuring the amount of electrical charge in the atmosphere, Thorguard Warning System predicts with a high degree of certainty the probability of a lightning strike within a covered area. This system warns guests and staff with a horn and strobe system when a lightning strike hazard is present. Areas served by Thorguard include Heritage Park, Family Aquatic Center, CRC and all adjacent areas and neighborhoods. The system is intended to warn guests and staff of probable lightning hazards in the area so lightning-related injuries and deaths can be avoided. Since Thorguard is a lightning prediction system, it is possible for the warning system to be activated even when weather conditions do not seem to indicate lightning is present. Be assured that these warnings are accurate and must be followed to ensure personal safety. Two distinct signals sent out by Thorguard: RED ALERT External warning horns blare for 15 seconds and strobe lights begin to blink. This signifies a lightning hazard in the area. All outdoor recreation activity should be suspended and guests and staff should seek appropriate shelter, preferably indoors. ALL CLEAR External warning horns give three consecutive blasts lasting 3-5 seconds each. This means the lightning hazard has left the area and it is safe to resume
normal activities. Chevy Chase is protected under the WeatherBug lightning detection system.

VANDALISM
The Wheeling Park District has experienced a tremendous amount of vandalism. This vandalism in our community has included acts of arson, destruction of playground equipment and landscaping materials, destruction of bathroom fixtures, stolen materials and graffiti. Vandalism is costly to repair and results in higher insurance costs. In order to ensure the safest parks and facilities possible, we need your help. We ask that when you see or hear about vandalism or something that may be unsafe, such as broken playground equipment, or anything else that you feel may be hazardous, please call 847-465-3333 or complete the online Report a Problem form under Quick Links at the bottom of the Home page on our website.
