BOARD

OF COMMISSIONERS

MISSION STATEMENT TO PROVIDE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES IN PARKS & RECREATION THAT ENRICH OUR COMMUNITIES. SUE STEIN PRESIDENT

LETTER

BRIAN LICHTENBERGER VICE PRESIDENT

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Residents, Heritage Park is a happening place this spring and summer seasons so be sure to pull out the Calendar of Events from the inside front cover and circle all the activities you and your family would like to attend. We are celebrating Earth Day on Sunday, April 22, from 11 AM to 1 PM. It’s free for everyone. Assemble and fly a kite and get close to nature at the Performance Pavilion at Heritage Park. It’s the Family Aquatic Center’s 25th Anniversary this year and we are celebrating all summer! Now is the time to get an Outdoor Aquatic Membership. Save 10% when you purchase by May 31.

MIKE BURNS

CHERI KLUMPP

The FREE Summer Entertainment Series gets underway in June at the Performance Pavilion at Heritage Park with movies, concerts and children’s entertainment. See page 8 for all the details. Summer Camp starts June 4. Make sure to reserve your child’s spot for memories and friendships that last a lifetime! Stay STRONG at the Fitness Center and take advantage of the two free outdoor Zumba parties. Join us at Wheeling Walks every Saturday and the Health Fair on May 20. Hitting the links at Traditions at Chevy Chase Golf Course is also a great way to stay active. Clean your clubs and get out and enjoy the great outdoors on the pristine fairways and manicured greens. Unplug this summer at your neighborhood park! The close-to-home events and FREE activities are all about engaging with family, friends and neighbors in beautiful outdoor surroundings. Open to page 7 for more information. So much is being planned for you and your family and neighbors at our parks and you can bet that means lots of memorable experiences for everyone. Come out and have fun! One last bit of news is our address change--although our location has not changed, the Wheeling Park District does have a new mailing address: 100 Community Boulevard, Wheeling, IL 60090. This also is the official address of the CRC. When using GPS, or instructing others on how to reach our facilities within the Community Campus, use the following addresses:

GLORIA ARTEAGA • 847-465-7674 garteaga@wheelingparkdistrict.com Gloria is working to make your experience at the Arctic Splash indoor pool memorable. If you have any questions about swimming lessons or scheduling a private session, Gloria is happy to assist you.

SECONDARY SKILLS THAT HELP BUILD ENDURANCE AND STROKE TECHNIQUE TO BRIDGE THE STUDENT TO THE NEXT LEVEL. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF THE LEVEL, PLEASE REGISTER FOR A LOWER LEVEL, AS THOSE FILL MORE QUICKLY. CHILDREN DO NOT ALWAYS COMPLETE ALL REQUIRED SKILLS IN ONE SESSION. (IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR A CHILD’S ABILITY LEVEL TO FLUCTUATE BASED ON ATTENDANCE AND REPETITION IN A LESSON PROGRAM.) PLEASE BE PATIENT. WATER ACCLIMATION IS A LONGER PROCESS FOR SOME CHILDREN. STAFF MAKES A REASONABLE EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN TO GET INTO THE WATER, BUT CHILDREN MUST ENTER THE WATER WILLINGLY.

FIND THE CLASS THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU. Each level is designed to improve on and practice different strokes and swimming skills; a new safety component is introduced at each lesson. Guppies and Minnows preschool-level lessons consist of 30 minutes of instruction and five minutes of supervised play. Lessons for Guppies are at the Arctic Splash leisure pool and Minnows are in the lap pool. PRESCHOOL

ALMOST THREE, JUST LIKE ME CHILDREN WHO TURN THREE BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1 & DECEMBER 31, 2018 If your child has a “late” birthday, get a head start in our Preschool program. Teachers developed this class to encourage the transition from home to school with an introduction to group activities, following directions, and social skills. All of this serves to support the “learning through play” philosophy.

TERRIFIC THREES MUST BE THREE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2018

START SMART PRE-K MUST BE FOUR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2018

The three-year-old program is designed for a child ready to flourish in a school setting. Our program stresses socialization, cooperative play, fine motor skills, sharing, and following directions. Choose from a two-day per week or a three-day per week class option. Terrific Threes is the middle step in our continuum of “learning though play.” In this positive, nurturing environment, children are introduced to colors, letters, and numbers, all of which help to encourage a love of learning and education.

The four-year-old curriculum develops skills needed for entering kindergarten in area school districts. Our program is based on suggestions and input from School District #21 kindergarten teachers and stresses the development of independence and cognitive skills through learning centers, structured activities, socialization, cooperative and dramatic play, and sharing. In this final step before kindergarten, make sure your eager learner is as prepared as possible!

The Traditions golf course, originally designed and built in 1927 by renowned architect Thomas Bendelow, was renovated in 2002 by Bob Lohmann. The par-72 course is reflective of the architecture from the origin of the game of golf. Deep pot bunkers lined with native fescue grasses, generous rolling greens, and undulating bent-grass fairways are some of the great features guests enjoy. Four sets of tees challenge players of all skill levels. Traditions at Chevy Chase golf carts are fully equipped with the latest GPS technology to show yardage to the pin and other key locations.

CAMPER INFORMATION FORMS

EVERY CAMPER REGISTERED FOR SUMMER CAMP MUST HAVE CAMPER INFORMATION FORMS FILLED OUT COMPLETELY. Beginning this summer, as part of our continuous efforts to provide the best possible care for our campers, the Wheeling Park District is partnering with CampDoc.com, an electronic health record system for camps, to help us consolidate and integrate camper health information into a centralized and secure location. The system will give camp supervisors instant access to required emergency forms and information regarding allergies, medications, authorized pick-up persons, etc. The security, confidentiality, and privacy of your camper’s personal information will always be protected. Only select Wheeling Park District supervisors will have access to camper information; the CampDoc.com website is secure, encrypted and password protected. •

Prior to the start of camp, you will receive a “Welcome email” from CampDoc.com with information about how to complete your camper’s health and emergency information.

Click the link in the email to login. Here you will be prompted to create an authorized user and set a password for your CampDoc.com account.

Follow the instructions and complete all information for your camper. Alerts will appear for any missing required information.

Upload any required documents to your CampDoc.com account, if necessary.

Return to CampDoc.com at any time to make changes or updates to your camper’s information before camp begins.

If changes are made after camp starts, contact the Wheeling Park District so camp supervisors know to look for this updated information.

Set register@CampDoc.com as a “safe sender” to avoid accidental delivery to junk and spam folders.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) The Wheeling Park District is committed to accessibility for individuals with disabilities and strives to provide equal participation in all programs and services. The Park District’s policy is to reasonably accommodate all qualified program applicants in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We welcome the questions, comments, and concerns of interested community members regarding Park District ADA compliance. To arrange for auxiliary aids or accommodations enabling individuals with disabilities to participate in Park District public meetings, or to request publications in a special format (such as audiocassette or large print), contact the Park District’s ADA Coordinator, Matt Wehby, by calling 847-465-3333 or by writing Wheeling Park District, 100 Community Blvd, Wheeling, IL 60090. INCLUSIVE RECREATION PROGRAMS In a continuing effort to accommodate the needs of residents with special needs, NWSRA and the Wheeling Park District provide inclusive recreation services. This means that individuals with disabilities are able to participate in programs offered by the Park District. Tell us your special needs by communicating on the registration form, and together the Wheeling Park District and NWSRA will provide the support necessary for success. Find out more about NWSRA on page 30. WHEELING PARK DISTRICT BEHAVIOR & CONDUCT Guests are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. Please observe the following guidelines: 1. Show respect to all guests and staff. 2. Refrain from using foul or obscene language. 3. Refrain from causing bodily harm to others. 4. Show respect for equipment, supplies, and facility. 5. Children under age 10 must be supervised by an adult, age 17 years or older, at all times at all recreation facilities.

THORGUARD LIGHTNING PREDICTION & WARNING SYSTEM By measuring the amount of electrical charge in the atmosphere, Thorguard predicts with a high degree of certainty the probability of a lightning strike within a covered area. This system warns guests and staff with a horn and strobe system when a lightning strike hazard is present. Areas served by Thorguard include Heritage Park, Family Aquatic Center, CRC, and all adjacent areas and neighborhoods. The system is intended to warn guests and staff of probable lightning hazards in the area so lightning-related injuries and deaths can be avoided. Since Thorguard is a lightning prediction system, it is possible for the warning system to be activated even when weather conditions do not seem to indicate lightning is present. Be assured that these warnings are accurate and must be followed to ensure personal safety. Two distinct signals sent out by Thorguard: RED ALERT External warning horns blare for 15 seconds and strobe lights begin to blink. This signifies a lightning hazard in the area. All outdoor recreation activity should be suspended and guests and staff should seek appropriate shelter, preferably indoors. ALL CLEAR External warning horns give three consecutive blasts lasting 3-5 seconds each. This means the lightning hazard has left the area and it is safe to resume normal activities. Chevy Chase is protected under the WeatherBug lightning detection system. LOCKER ROOMS The locker room is an amenity available for use by all CRC participants. The purpose is for storage of personal belongings while using the facility. Each participant needs to furnish his/her own lock. Overnight storage is available. Private locker rooms are available on a rental basis. For more information see the Fitness section of this Program Guide. The Wheeling Park District is not responsible for lost and/or stolen property. Please do not store valuables in lockers. Wallet lockers are available in the Arctic Splash, gymnasium, and Fitness Center.

IMAGE RECORDING DEVICES The use of any image recording devices, including video recorders, cameras, and phone cameras, is strictly prohibited in all Wheeling Park District facility locker rooms, washrooms, and shower areas. Please report any violations immediately to facility management. VANDALISM The Wheeling Park District has experienced a tremendous amount of vandalism. This vandalism in our community has included acts of arson, destruction of playground equipment and landscaping materials, destruction of bathroom fixtures, stolen materials, and graffiti, as well as the destruction of the waterfall feature at Husky Park. Vandalism affects residents and other guests when bathrooms are closed, playground equipment is under repair, and amenities are not available for use. Vandalism is costly to repair and results in higher insurance costs. In order to ensure the safest parks and facilities possible, we need your help. We ask that when you see or hear about vandalism or something that may be unsafe, such as broken playground equipment, or anything else that you feel may be hazardous, please call 847-465-3333 or complete the online Report a Problem form under the Parks and Facilities tab. REWARD PROGRAM Help the Wheeling Park District stop vandalism in your neighborhood park. Call us with information about the person or persons who vandalize any Wheeling Park District property. This would include the destruction of any property such as vehicles, playground equipment, or landscape materials, the theft of any equipment or materials, any act of arson, and any act of graffiti. If your information leads to arrest, case resolution and/or restitution, you will be given a reward from $500 to $5000. Your name will be kept confidential.
