MISSION STATEMENT TO PROVIDE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES IN PARKS & RECREATION THAT ENRICH OUR COMMUNITIES. SUE STEIN PRESIDENT
LETTER
BRIAN LICHTENBERGER VICE PRESIDENT
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Residents, Excellent guest experiences are the top priority of the Wheeling Park District. We make a point of surveying those who attend our events and programs for feedback and suggestions. This information helps us to continually improve our guest services and plan effectively for the future. Our community is growing. More housing is popping up around town and the Wheeling Town Center is taking shape right next to our facilities. In addition, the majority of Senior Center programs are relocating to the Community Recreation Center by the end of 2017 when the Pavilion Senior Center closes. We are looking forward to welcoming the seniors and seeing them at the CRC more often. To best serve the needs of our community, we are exploring the possibility of a CRC expansion project. This would include enlarging our fitness facilities and adding more multi-purpose rooms. While it would be very exciting to move forward with this much-needed plan, a decision will not be made until bids for the work are secured and costs can be evaluated. Please visit our website regularly for news about the project. As we enter the colder months of the year, I want to remind you to stay active by visiting our parks and facilities. Bring the kids to celebrate 2018 at Happy Noon Year on Sunday, December 31, 11:00am – 12:15 pm. Join us for Winter Wonderfest at Chevy Chase Country Club on Sunday, January 14. This free event features lots of fun activities for all ages. The Spring Egg Scramble takes place on the Wheeling High School football field Saturday, March 24. It’s free for kids ages two to six years. Come back on Friday, March 30, for the Holiday Egg Hunt at Arctic Splash. This one is for kids ages two to eight years.

Wheeling Walks continues throughout the winter months. This free community walking club meets every Saturday at 9:30 pm, at Heritage Park where the paths are maintained all season. In case of inclement weather, meet upstairs at the CRC indoor walking track. Take advantage of the winter special at the Fitness Center. Sign up for an annual membership during the month of January and your first month is FREE. Challenge yourself to swim (2.4 miles), bike (112 miles) and run/walk (26.2 miles) by registering for the Lazy Triathlon. You have the entire month of February to accomplish this.
PAUL ZANGARA
When weather permits, enjoy free ice skating and hockey play on our outdoor rink at the CRC campus / Heritage Park area. Check ice conditions on our 24-hour Rainout line.

PRESCHOOL
ALMOST THREE, JUST LIKE ME CHILDREN WHO TURN THREE BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1 & DECEMBER 31, 2018 If your child has a “late” birthday, get a head start in our Preschool program. Teachers developed this class to encourage the transition from home to school with an introduction to group activities, following directions, and social skills. All of this serves to support the “learning through play” philosophy.
TERRIFIC THREES MUST BE THREE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2018
START SMART PRE-K MUST BE FOUR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2018
The three-year-old program is designed for a child ready to flourish in a school setting. Our program stresses socialization, cooperative play, fine motor skills, sharing, and following directions. Choose from a two-day per week or a three-day per week class option. Terrific Threes is the middle step in our continuum of “learning though play.” In this positive, nurturing environment, children are introduced to colors, letters, and numbers, all of which help to encourage a love of learning and education.
The four-year-old curriculum develops skills needed for entering kindergarten in area school districts. Our program is based on suggestions and input from School District #21 kindergarten teachers and stresses the development of independence and cognitive skills through learning centers, structured activities, socialization, cooperative and dramatic play, and sharing. In this final step before kindergarten, make sure your eager learner is as prepared as possible!

THAT’S DOROTHY! She found her STRONG in Pilates Group Fitness classes. HERE’S WHAT SHE TOLD US: I would like to thank the Fitness Center for adding classes as a part of our membership. I started taking a Pilates class about a year ago. I really thought that I would never be able to do the exercises. I have added more Pilates classes and now I take the Pilates classes four times a week. A few months ago I had a bone scan. My bone density has increased because of taking Pilates. Also, I am happy to say I am in better physical shape than I have been since I was much younger. I am more flexible than I ever have been. Both Debi and Denise are great instructors. I would like to commend them for their wonderful classes and their encouragement. Find your STRONG every day at the Fitness Center! 46

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) The Wheeling Park District is committed to accessibility for individuals with disabilities and strives to provide equal participation in all programs and services. The Park District’s policy is to reasonably accommodate all qualified program applicants in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We welcome the questions, comments, and concerns of interested community members regarding Park District ADA compliance. To arrange for auxiliary aids or accommodations enabling individuals with disabilities to participate in Park District public meetings, or to request publications in a special format (such as audiocassette or large print), contact the Park District’s ADA Coordinator, Matt Wehby, by calling 847-465-3333 or by writing Wheeling Park District, 333 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling, IL 60090. INCLUSIVE RECREATION PROGRAMS In a continuing effort to accommodate the needs of residents with special needs, NWSRA and the Wheeling Park District provide inclusive recreation services. This means that individuals with disabilities are able to participate in programs offered by the Park District. Tell us your special needs by communicating on the registration form, and together the Wheeling Park District and NWSRA will provide the support necessary for success. Find out more about NWSRA on page 31. WHEELING PARK DISTRICT BEHAVIOR & CONDUCT Guests are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. Please observe the following guidelines: 1. Show respect to all guests and staff. 2. Refrain from using foul or obscene language. 3. Refrain from causing bodily harm to others. 4. Show respect for equipment, supplies, and facility. 5. Children under age 10 must be supervised by an adult, age 17 years or older, at all times at all recreation facilities.
THORGUARD LIGHTNING PREDICTION & WARNING SYSTEM By measuring the amount of electrical charge in the atmosphere, Thorguard predicts with a high degree of certainty the probability of a lightning strike within a covered area. This system warns guests and staff with a horn and strobe system when a lightning strike hazard is present. Areas served by Thorguard include Heritage Park, Family Aquatic Center, CRC, and all adjacent areas and neighborhoods. The system is intended to warn guests and staff of probable lightning hazards in the area so lightning-related injuries and deaths can be avoided. Since Thorguard is a lightning prediction system, it is possible for the warning system to be activated even when weather conditions do not seem to indicate lightning is present. Be assured that these warnings are accurate and must be followed to ensure personal safety. Two distinct signals sent out by Thorguard: RED ALERT External warning horns blare for 15 seconds and strobe lights begin to blink. This signifies a lightning hazard in the area. All outdoor recreation activity should be suspended and guests and staff should seek appropriate shelter, preferably indoors. ALL CLEAR External warning horns give three consecutive blasts lasting 3-5 seconds each. This means the lightning hazard has left the area and it is safe to resume normal activities. Chevy Chase is protected under the WeatherBug lightning detection system. LOCKER ROOMS The locker room is an amenity available for use by all CRC participants. The purpose is for storage of personal belongings while using the facility. Each participant needs to furnish his/her own lock. Overnight storage is available. Private locker rooms are available on a rental basis. For more information see the Fitness section of this Program Guide. The Wheeling Park District is not responsible for lost and/or stolen property. Please do not store valuables in lockers. Wallet lockers are available in the Arctic Splash, gymnasium, and Fitness Center.
IMAGE RECORDING DEVICES The use of any image recording devices, including video recorders, cameras, and phone cameras, is strictly prohibited in all Wheeling Park District facility locker rooms, washrooms, and shower areas. Please report any violations immediately to facility management. VANDALISM The Wheeling Park District has experienced a tremendous amount of vandalism. This vandalism in our community has included acts of arson, destruction of playground equipment and landscaping materials, destruction of bathroom fixtures, stolen materials, and graffiti, as well as the destruction of the waterfall feature at Husky Park. Vandalism affects residents and other guests when bathrooms are closed, playground equipment is under repair, and amenities are not available for use. Vandalism is costly to repair and results in higher insurance costs. In order to ensure the safest parks and facilities possible, we need your help. We ask that when you see or hear about vandalism or something that may be unsafe, such as broken playground equipment, or anything else that you feel may be hazardous, please call 847-465-3333 or complete the online Report a Problem form under the Parks and Facilities tab. REWARD PROGRAM Help the Wheeling Park District stop vandalism in your neighborhood park. Call us with information about the person or persons who vandalize any Wheeling Park District property. This would include the destruction of any property such as vehicles, playground equipment, or landscape materials, the theft of any equipment or materials, any act of arson, and any act of graffiti. If your information leads to arrest, case resolution and/or restitution, you will be given a reward from $500 to $5000. Your name will be kept confidential.
