Whileitwasanindirecttax,thecolonistswerestillknowledgeableofitshappening.Colonists, especiallythoseaffecteddirectlyasmerchantsandshippers,thatthenewtaxwasthemajorculprit fortheireconomicstruggles.WhichmadefortheAct'srepealbeganalmostimmediately,and protestsagainsttheSugarActatfirstfocusedmoreontheeconomicimpactratherthanthe constitutionalissueoftaxationwithoutrepresentation.
