inter is the season of endings and beginnings. We say goodbye to one year and hello to another. I’m one of those Monday morning people who everyone loves to hate, so naturally, I love January 1st. I prefer New Year’s Day over New Year’s Eve. Perhaps it’s because I’m getting older and elaborate parties don’t entice me anymore, or because I just love beginnings – looking ahead to the possibilities.
T
Speaking of beginnings, in the fall we added a new team member. We are so fortunate to have Lauren Hillegas heading up our communications and social media efforts. And, looking forward to 2019, I see some more exciting changes coming to Where & When. You’ll just have to wait and see.
In this issue, you’ll find fun events and things to do designed to get you out of the house, off your devices and savoring wintertime as much as you did when you were a kid. Remember when you didn’t come in the house until long after you lost feeling in your fingers and toes? My wish for you this winter is that next summer you look back with delight and say, “remember last winter when we_________? We have to do that again!”

any things that spark a child’s curiosity fall under the don’t touch column. That’s why children’s museums are so fun and functional for kids. They are places full of possibility and wonder where children are encouraged to use their imaginations and learn and experience without rigid boundaries. Children’s museums in Pennsylvania vary in scope and size, but all are special places where exhibits are created to foster development in toddlers and preschool-age children, where pretend and play are the main focus. These museums also stimulate the young minds of elementary-age and older children to imagine and discover possibilities beyond their world. I think anytime is the best time to enjoy these museums, but if the winter weather is giving you cabin fever, a trip to a children’s museum is the perfect way to get your kids out of the house and into a world of discovery.

hile many Pennsylvanians hope that Old Man Winter will spare them undue hardships, most residents of Clearfield County embrace the cold and the snow and the activities that are best enjoyed when there is plenty of both. Whether driving the backroads to sample local beers and wine, checking out holiday finery and unique arts and crafts, snowshoeing and plunging into the frigid waters of Parker Lake, or hunting white-tailed deer and the elusive elk, Clearfield County has a winter activity to suit family members of all ages. Many venues are open year-round and offer seasonal events, such as Parker Dam State Park and the Winkler Gallery and Education Center in downtown DuBois.
There are also a number of annual weekend events, and Visit Clearfield County (VCC), the local visitors’ bureau, keeps track of it all at VisitClearfieldCounty.org. “My favorite thing to do in the area is hunting,” said VCC executive director Josiah Jones. “There are a lot of big game lands areas that offer a great hunting experience.” Jones and his fellow hunters look to www.pgc.pa.gov for specifics on seasons and regulations. “When we get a good amount of snow, there are a lot of opportunities for people to go snowmobiling and snowshoe hiking,” Jones added. Winter weather enthusiasts can rent snowshoes, crosscountry skis, and even ice skates at Parker Dam State Park. “There’s a lot of snowmobile trails and plenty of places to go ice fishing, like Curwensville Lake and Parker Dam,” he said. Event dates in 2019 are Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26 and 27. Highlights include the Freeze Your Gizzard 5K, a Snowbox Derby for children, the Frozen Salami Sling, a Polar Bear Plunge, and another race called the “Almost” Naked Mile. “They are all activities that we have been doing for a number of years,” YMCA executive director Don Herres related, noting that the two-day festival has been held for about 35 years. “They all have their own little niche of people,” he added. Depending on specific weather conditions, one featured activity might draw more participants than another. The weekend will kick off with the Freeze Your Gizzard 5K, which will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. Attracting 50 to 100 participants per year, the event
encourages runners to be creative with their costumes or crazy hats to make it more fun and more of a spectacle. Participants of the “Almost” Naked Mile don nothing more than a swimsuit and a warm knit cap. For the Frozen Salami Sling, eightpound salami rings are thrown for distance, with prizes to winners. During the Snowbox Derby, youths have a great time racing their homemade cardboard sleds down Avalanche Hill, a name that festival founders gave to the incline used for the derby. The last event on Sunday is the ever-popular Polar Bear Plunge, providing the opportunity for teenagers and adults to jump through a hole in the ice into Parker Lake for charity. “Watching everybody jump into the ice-cold water is hilarious,” Jones remarked. Other activities will include the Blizzard Volleyball tournament played on the beach in the snow, ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and bonfires. According to Visit Clearfield County assistant director Sue Vitullo, Parker Dam State Park staff provide lessons in both skiing and snowshoeing, the latter of
Vitullo also looks forward to the annual Groundhog Wine Festival, which will be held on Groundhog Day, Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019. he Allenberry Resort in Boiling Springs, Cumberland County, has seen many changes over the years, but one thing that has been a constant is the bucolic landscape that has drawn guests for 75 years. The original tract of land was granted to James Crockett (a distant relative of Davy) in 1786. Crockett built two of the existing limestone buildings – a small two-story dwelling situated on the bank of the Yellow Breeches Creek, now known as the Still House, and a large bank barn known as Fairfield Hall, which houses The Barn Restaurant.
Between 1812 and 1820, George Belzhoover, who purchased the property in 1798, added two more limestone buildings – a large farmhouse known as the mansion house and a second stone barn that later became known as the Stone Lodge and Carriage Room. The property would change hands again in 1928 before being sold to Charles A.B. Heinze in 1944. Heinze felt very strongly that Allenberry was a gem that

Over the decades, Allenberry became a place of relaxation and entertainment. Under new ownership since 2016, the limestone buildings have all been renovated, bringing back the original historic charm. The countryside resort has 16 buildings where guests can stay, relax, dine and be entertained. From weddings to family vacations, the resort has once again become an idyllic destination in the heart of southcentral Pennsylvania. There truly is nothing more peaceful in my mind than the sound of water flowing over rocks in a creek. The Yellow Breeches Creek is known as a world-class fly-fishing destination, but guests also enjoy kayaking and tubing on the creek. The resort offers special year-round fly-fishing packages from a One-Day Fly Fishing Experience to a three-and-a-half-day Hallowed Waters Tour. Guys, if you want to score some big points in the romance department, book a winter getaway and she may even let you get some fly-fishing in. Close proximity to the Appalachian Trail makes Allenberry the perfect getaway for outdoors enthusiasts.
Since 1949, the Playhouse has been the entertainment epicenter of the resort. Famous actors like a young John Travolta and Shirley Jones have graced the Playhouse stage. This winter, the Playhouse at Allenberry will present The Man Who Saved Christmas and It Shoulda Been You. The springtime will bring male and female versions of The Odd Couple and Monty Python’s Spamalot to the stage. In addition to the theater, Allenberry hosts Murder Mystery Weekends at the resort.
In 2019, the Playhouse will celebrate 70 years of bringing live theater to Allenberry.

The Allenberry Resort offers two dining experiences: The Barn Restaurant and The Breeches Café. The rustic chic feel of The Barn Restaurant offers the perfect atmosphere for the seasonal dishes served using local farm-to-table ingredients. The restaurant is open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. The Breeches Cafe is the place to go the get your day started right. Delicious made-from-scratch breakfasts and great coffee from Little Amps Coffee Roasters of Harrisburg provide the nutrition you need for your day on the creek or just relaxing by the creek. Guests and locals have made this their favorite way to start the day. Winter, spring, summer or fall – you can’t go wrong when you stay at Allenberry Resort. Each season brings a unique color to the canvas. As they like to say at Allenberry, “the setting will bring you in, the experience will bring you back.”

hen driving north on Interstate 81 in winter, if you look to your right as you approach Scranton, you will see a series of trails cut into the snow-covered mountainside that serves as the backdrop for the retail and commercial businesses located right off Exit 190. This scenic mountainside is the home of one of northeastern Pennsylvania’s most popular ski areas – Montage Mountain. Opening in 1984 with seven trails, today Montage Mountain offers visitors 24 trails, including White Lightning, the second-steepest trail in the eastern United States. Home to two terrain parks designed with jumps, rails, and features ranging from beginner to expert, the resort has become a popular winter destination for snowboarders seeking an exciting mountain experience. Skiers of every skill level from beginner to expert agree that the experience waiting to be discovered on these 140 pristine acres makes a trip to Montage Mountain worth the two-hour drive from points like Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Have you considered hitting the slopes but feel intimidated to try? Montage Mountain’s Ski School offers classes for people of all ages designed to teach beginners the basics. Most lesson pricing at the resort is inclusive, with lift ticket, rental, and instruction offered for one economical price.
One of winter’s newest trends – airboarding – is a popular draw to the resort, which boasts the largest program in the United States dedicated to this growing winter activity. Instructors provide a quick lesson, and in no time, airboarders will be gliding down the mountain as if they have been practicing their airboard technique for years. Snow tubing, another popular winter activity, remains a major draw at the mountain each year, where 10 snow tube tracks await visitors of all ages and all skill levels. Visitors, groups, and families looking to dine while visiting the mountain will discover a variety of options within the lodge at Montage Mountain. This event culminates with a Torch Light Parade down Main Line slope followed by a fireworks display at the lodge. Ski races throughout the season (including the Mid-Atlantic Masters Race) mean there is always something on the calendar to welcome guests for a great time on the slopes.
