Ifyou’ve traveled along Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania, you probably noticed that mile marker 161 reads Bellefonte. Colloquially, locals know this exit is the one you need to take to go to State College, one of the most popular destinations for travelers in Pennsylvania thanks to academic pursuits and die-hard sports fans, just to name a few. But don’t be so quick to drive past the turn-off for the delightful town of Bellefonte - spend some time exploring this summer, and you’ll soon discover why Bellefonte merits the highway designation.
Offering visitors a blend of culture, historic architecture, relaxing pastimes, and access to recreational areas, you’ll discover that a trip to Bellefonte will make for a wonderful summer getaway. A drive through town offers a glimpse into the town’s rich history as a town where iron production during the 19th century established it as a center of commerce. The resources of Spring Creek allowed industrialists to grow this industry during the period of America’s Industrial Revolution. Today, the sites once booming during that period, like the Eagle Iron Works, have been restored to offer visitors a hands-on opportunity to learn the story.
Other industries in the town (including Pennsylvania Match Factory, a leading US producer) allowed for the expansion and development of a town whose impressive architecture stands today in testament to the industrialists and workers who settled here. Bellefonte’s Historic District, an impressive part of the city featuring preserved Victorian and antebellum architecture, has the power to transport your imagination to that previous era of expansive grandeur. Time spent exploring West High Street, home to a thriving commercial district filled with boutiques, antique shops, and cozy cafés, is an opportunity to immerse yourself in this rich heritage. A visit to the Bellefonte Art Museum
The Bellefonte Art Museum is a celebration of the region’s cultural contributions.is an opportunity to discover a blending of the contemporary world with historic influence. Discover emerging and local artists in exhibitions both permanent and changing. Time spent exploring the museum’s Underground Railroad exhibit offers an opportunity to explore the role Bellefonte, as a stop, played during this chapter of American history.
Within steps of the art museum, the Miles-Humes House, Centre County Library & Historical Museum is another significant attraction sharing the history
of Bellefonte. Visitors will discover collections and artifacts dating back to the 19th century in the buildings located at Allegheny and Howard Street. The Historical Museum is located in the MilesPotter-Humes House, a classic Georgian home sharing the stories of the county’s noted residents, as well as items from textile history and pieces reflecting everyday life.
Have some outdoor fun exploring
Photo by Anna Cook Above: Roland Curtin Mansion, part of the Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village.(the former Match Factory, now on the National Historic Register of Historic Places). Nearby spots to grab a bite to eat make the park a place where you can spend the entire day discovering one fun thing after another!
two town attractions that will delight everyone in the family. Talleyrand Park is a scenic green space located along Spring Creek where one can enjoy leisurely walking trails, nostalgic bridges, and green lawns that make a great spot for a family picnic. Birds, wildlife, and fish native to the creek make it a great spot for kids to connect with nature. The pastoral landscape of much of the Lebanon Valley may not convey the fact that there is a lively arts community there, but it should. Lebanon County has officially designated 2024 as the Year of the Arts. The countywide effort will celebrate all types of art with installments, artist profiles, and special events. The highlight of the Year of the Arts is the 50th Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show, which will be held on August 17 and 18. This nationally ranked, juried art show brings artists from across the country to the shady grounds of the historic Pennsylvania Chautauqua* “The 50th Mount Gretna Out-
door Art Show will honor the impact this nationally ranked event has on our region. The show will celebrate all of the cultural, artistic, educational, and performance events in our town. As we commemorate this milestone, we will recognize how the arts have created our unique sense of place in the Lebanon Val-
ley,” says art show director Kerry Royer.
In addition to the 200 juried artists, an emerging artist section, a gourmet food court, and five bands, a Kids Art Show is scheduled at the Chautauqua Playground on both days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children can enjoy make-and-take art activities, spin art, and more. For more information on the 50th Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show visit mtgretnaarts.com.
The Mt. Gretna International Film Festival (MtGIFF) will make its debut on August 18 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the historic Mount Gretna Playhouse. The inaugural event will support and celebrate emerging and established filmmakers in their shared passion for the cinematic art form. This year, only short films under 5 minutes will be featured. Attendees can view selected entries before the award ceremony announces the winners in several film genres.
Parking for the events will be at Soldiers Field on Timber Road, in Mount Gretna (the fields near the lake), and shuttle service will be available from dedicated parking compliments of WellSpan Philhaven Hospital.
This spring, a new installation was unveiled outside the Mt. Gretna Playhouse to celebrate the Year of the Arts in the Lebanon Valley. Artist and Mt. Gretna native Ryan Fretz’s majestic green Luna moth
sculpture pays homage to the insect that makes its home in the town’s trees.
The Year of the Arts will be celebrated across Lebanon County, with events and community art projects occurring throughout the year. From theater and concerts to an art walk and a music festival, a different event will be featured each month.
Visitors will enjoy two music festivals in 2024. The Original Mount Gretna Cicada Music Festival at the Mount Gretna Playhouse will be held on August 5-8 and 12-13, and the Music and Brew Fest at Coleman Park will take place in September with a date to be determined.
In November, Visit Lebanon Valley, the destination marketing organization for the county, will release a new children’s book featuring Lebanon Lilly. The second in the series, follows the adventures of the adorable Holstein and pays homage
to the agricultural heritage of the Lebanon Valley. Lebanon Lilly is the brainchild of Visit Lebanon Valley president Jennifer Kuzo, who with the help of local illustrator MJ McFalls, will once again bring Lilly to life.
“The arts are transformative with the power to inspire and connect us all,” says Kuzo, “For 2024, we seek to honor the role that art, music, and theatre play in improving the quality of life for our locals and visitors alike.”

What began in southwestern New York in 1874 as a summer school to train Sunday school teachers, expanded to provide other kinds of education, including the arts. Summer concerts and social gatherings were a part of the residents’ experience. The Chautauqua movement peaked in the late 19th and early twentieth centuries. The Pennsylvania Chautauqua, founded in 1892, is one of just 17 Chautauquas remaining in the US.

Recently, I visited the Laurel Highlands region in western PA. Located just a few hours from Lancaster County, the Laurel Highlands comprises Westmoreland, Fayette, and Somerset counties and is about 30 minutes east of Pittsburgh. Having spent a couple of days exploring some of the best the region offers, I can assure you that I will be back. Need a girlfriend’s weekend away for shopping, hiking, and wine tasting? You’ll find it. Craving the rush of the rapids and mountains to climb? You’ll find them. Is it time to get the kids off their devices and into nature? You’ll find it. And for couples looking for scenic drives, spa days, and small-town charm, you’ll find those here, too. Although the area has more to do than I can list, I wanted to recap just a few “must see and dos.” For more information and to create a full itinerary, visit www.golaurelhighlands.com. Inspirational views, exceptional hospitality, and an adventurer’s mecca all await. Start planning your fall hit list now
Historic Sites—Known as the first area to hold English courts in western PA during the Revolutionary War, Hanna’s Town was a temporary stop for travelers and merchants. In 1782, a Seneca raiding party and their British allies destroyed Hanna’s Town, and it never recovered from this devastation. Heroes from this attack emerge as we hear of a brave 13-year-old girl, Peggy Shaw, who sacrificed her life to save a toddler who had wandered outside the fort.
Guided tours of the reconstructed replica of Historic Hanna’s Town include the jail, tavern, fort, and Dyer’s Garden, the source for color dyes the settlers used on their fabrics. Tours are available from May to October, in addition to special events held throughout the season. www.westmorelandhistory.org/ hannas-town
Housing one of the original Conestoga wagons and an 1830s-style stagecoach, The Compass Inn Museum, located just off Route 30, the main street pathway for travelers in the 1800s, showcases the lives of innkeepers Robert & Rachel Armor. Today, tours are conducted by guides in period clothing and demonstrate life
in the cookhouse, blacksmith shop, and inn. Tours are available from May to October. Special events are held throughout the season. www.compassinn.org
2.Foodie Finds —Gobs: Similar to what Lancaster Countians call a whoopie pie (chocolate cake with a delicious creamy center), gobs can satisfy your sweet tooth in no time. The treat is said to have originated in Johnstown in 1927 and quickly became the preferred treat of coal miners in Cambria and Somerset counties.
3.Architectural Masterpieces – Fallingwater & Kentuck Knob: Discover Frank Lloyd Wright’s love for nature and design with these two beautiful houses. Fallingwater boasts iconic photographic angles and modern organic design inside and out. Wright’s designs are integrated within nature, not against it. Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann, the owners of Kaufmann’s Department Store in Pittsburgh, hired Wright in 1936 to create an innovative space to be used as a vacation home. Features include:
• Frameless open windows prevent interference with your view outside.
• A swimming pool.
• The use of just two signature colors throughout – light ochre (concrete) and Cherokee red (steel).
Today, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy manages and preserves Fallingwater. www.fallingwater.org
Just a short drive from Fallingwater lies Kentuck Knob, a private residence open to the public. I.N. and Bernardine Hagan hired Wright to design this Usonian home along the mountainside in 1953. The residence is considered one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s last designs. Guided tours include a tour of the house and grounds. You should book well in advance for both houses to ensure a reservation. www.kentuckknob.com
4.Art & History – Explore hundreds of years of creative history displayed at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Current exhibits include “65 Artists, 65 Years: An Anniversary Exhibition,” shown through September 8, 2024. Admission to the museum is free and is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. www.thewestmoreland.org
5.Outdoor Adventure – Ohiopyle State Park is located on the southe rn end of the Laurel Highlands and provides an extensive list of outdoor activities for people of all levels and interests. The Youghiogheny River runs throughout the park and is the source of thrilling whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fishing. Other recreational activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding, and rock climbing. Pack a picnic and enjoy your view at the Tharp Knob Vista Overlook. www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/OhiopyleStatePark
6.Girls’ Day Out – Spend an afternoon in downtown Ligonier, a picturesque town with all the charm of Stars Hollow, as seen in “Gilmore Girls.” Pop into local boutiques for unique gifts, and grab lunch, a glass of wine, and homemade ice cream before relaxing on benches in the town’s diamond.
7.Rest Your Head – When it’s time to recharge, take advantage of the endless lodging choices. From quaint cabins and campgrounds to world-class resorts and hotels, there’s something to match everyone’s dream experience. On my visit, I stayed at Oak Lodge, a bed and breakfast in Stahlstown. Rather than staying in the main lodge, my accommodations were in one of the comfortable and well-appointed cabins. Breakfasts created by the chef at Oak Lodge are something special. www.oaklodgepa.com
8.Family Fun – This summer, walk on the wet and wild side with Idlewild & SoakZone, a fun-filled theme and water park that the kids (and adults) will love. A huge dose of nostalgia awaits adults as they stroll through Story Book Forest and visit their favorite nursery rhyme characters. www.idlewild.com
9.Explore Nature’s Finest – The Laurel Highlands embraces nature’s beauty at every turn, inviting a time for exploration, deep breaths, and picnic lunches. It’s a short drive to any of the eight state parks extending from Latrobe to Ohiopyle. www.golaurelhighlands.com/outdoors/parks/state
10. Honoring Those We Lost – Built to commemorate and honor the heroes who lost their lives in the United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, the Flight 93 National Memorial stands as a symbol of courage and unity. www.nps. gov/flni
