Breathing New Life Into Denton Hill DENTON GO, Breathing New Life Into Denton Hill

As visitors seek out outdoor recreation areas across Pennsylvania, hoping to escape from the busyness of the workaday world, Potter County remains one of the state's favorite locations to discover places to find them. In recent years, the state's northern tier has become especially popular for those looking to unwind and pursue outdoor activities. If outdoor recreation areas are what you are looking for as you begin thinking about your next getaway, one of the state's outdoor recreation spots in Potter County should be at

the top of your list. Fantastic outdoor recreation opportunities and exciting new amenities await discovery at Denton Go, located at Denton Hill State Park. Located on historic Route 6 in Ulysses Township, directly across from the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, Denton Go is a new site that builds on the property's rich history as a winter ski area between Coudersport and Galeton. After several years of limited use as a trail connector between the Susquehannock State Forest and the Lumber Museum site, Denton Hill State Park, operating as Denton Go, has been redeveloped to expand

the menu of outdoor recreation opportunities for visitors in the region.

Today, Denton Go, a locally owned and managed company, has assumed operation and, through a developmental partnership with the state of Pennsylvania, is transforming the park and its scenic property into a year-round recreation complex.

Working with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the team at Denton Go is proving that the sometimescomplicated process of a public/private partnership, with a mutual goal of developing recreational operations like

First opened in the 1950s, Denton Hill State Park was a popular ski resort under the management of the state of Pennsylvania. The park, which spanned approximately seven hundred acres, was developed to provide a place along Pennsylvania's northern tier to enjoy winter pastimes, primarily skiing. It operated this way until 1979 before being transitioned to private operators in 2014. The park and ski area mostly stayed dormant for ten years, and visitors needed to travel to other places to enjoy their favorite activities.

The iconic ski lodge has been re-opened under the partnership between Denton Go and PA DCNR and is once again welcoming groups looking for a unique venue to gather surrounded by the scenic beauty of Potter County.

Denton Go, succeeds by offering multi-use recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy. Open now in initial phases; the plan is to extend the ski resort into a four-season adventure center that will bring visitors year-round opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Popular traditional pastimes like hiking, skiing, and camping are part of the list of activities to enjoy at Denton Go, while newer and faster-paced activities like ATV riding, and mountain biking are also part of the outdoor recreation design. As development progresses, visitors can look forward to outdoor recreation blooming with the seasons at Denton Go. Skiers will once again be able to con-

quer the famous "Avalanche," hikers will find a connection to the popular Susquehannock Trail system, UTV fans can rev up and connect to the area's ATV Trail network, and bikers can expect to enjoy exploring countless miles of riding opportunities in the PA Wilds.

One of the features of the property that has begun operating again and is enjoying success is the Denton Hill Lodge, which offers both a dining and social area that, as a venue, accommodates private functions and gatherings. This chaletstyle building provides a unique backdrop for groups looking to gather in the beautiful outdoor setting. With incredible panoramic views of the mountain,

the lodge is a perfect location for group events. (Information on group or special event bookings at the park can be found on the website or by calling the park office at 814-754-9013.)

With the development of the camping sites, folks heading to the region specifically to pursue those activities will have a place to set up camp with their tent or RV to have a base while enjoying the trails of the northern tier. Scott Carts, one of the development team's principal members, said, "Denton Go is excited to be a part of the redevelopment

of Denton Hill State Park. Bringing new year-round recreational activities to the park, along with the increased overnight lodging and camping areas, we hope to create a basecamp destination for visitors to "Get Outdoors" for the many recreational activities of the Potter-Tioga region."

To learn more about Denton Go and what activities visitors can enjoy, or for general information about the park, visit the website (www.dentongo.com) or look up the site's Facebook page.

Rev up for an exciting ride exploring the trails of Denton Go and enjoying the vistas that make Denton Hill a popular recreation area for high octane outdoor fun.
When you stand on the porch of the cabins at Denton Go, you experience panoramic views of the beautiful mountain scenery that draws visitors to this region each year. No matter the season, this Potter County location is a nature lover’s paradise.

The New Oxford Dictionary defines nostalgia as a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. We all feel a little nostalgic at times. For me, it’s when a reel pops up on social media portraying life as a kid in the 70s and 80s. Luckily, there are places throughout Pennsylvania where we can experience a flicker of another time and place we miss. I put together a retro road trip through parts of Lebanon, Lancaster, and York Counties that’s sure to deliver a good dose of misty-eyed nostalgia.

Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach

Since 1885, when Conewago Creek was dammed to form what was then named Conewago Lake, Mount Gretna has been a destination for recreation and relaxation. Ladies with their parasols and gentlemen in hats would take romantic canoe rides on the lake. Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach, as it is known today, welcomes families to enjoy a timehonored American pastime of canoeing, swimming, and picnicking lakeside. From the high dive out in the center of the water to the beach and picnic area, Gretna Lake continues to bring outstanding summer recreation to families. Mt. Gretna’s history as a summer retreat is evident as you stroll through the hamlet, where you’ll find shops, eateries, and theater alongside predominantly Queen Anne and Gothic Revival-style cottages surrounded by a lush forest.

home to goats, chickens, peacocks, rabbits, and pigs. Last spring, baby piglets Buttercup and Oreo were a massive hit with visitors.

Going to the Pretzel Hut as a kid was a treat, not just for the food but for the experience. The roadside restaurant opened in the late 1950’s and sold fresh soft pretzels and ice cream. The petting zoo and play area behind the restaurant made The Pretzel Hut a destination. Over the years, the restaurant started offering a full menu of delicious choices.

Last spring Dwight and Kathi Zimmerman purchased The Pretzel Hut and made improvements to the property while honoring the tradition of the popular eatery. The petting zoo is still

About 5 miles south on Route 501 is Lititz, a historic town filled with shops of all kinds. There’s one shop on Main Street that has nostalgia written all over it. Candyology is a kid’s dream come true. But, it’s perhaps the parents and grandparents that truly appreciate this unique candy shop. In addition to modern favorites, you will find candy cigarettes, Bit’ O Honey, Baby Ruth, Charleston Chews, Chunky, and Clark Bars, to name a few. All the candy you grew up craving is here. From Pop Rocks to Moon Pies, Candyology has got you covered.

The large soda wall in the shop has over 100 flavors, including Orange Dreamsicle, Apple Pie, and even a Bacon-flavored soda. The shop also carries stuffies, puzzles, and games. Needless to say, a stop at Candyology is a must for the young and young at heart.

Decades

438 N Queen St., Lancaster, PA 17603 717-282-1421 decadeslancaster.com

Decades Arcade in Lancaster is a retro-style arcade specializing in classic video games from the ‘80s and ‘90s. It’s a throwback to the golden era of arcade gaming, featuring a mix of vintage games like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Street Fighter, Frogger, and Pinball machines.

Decades also sports a 6-line bowling alley that is full service, so players can enjoy food and drinks while they bowl. That’s right; Decades has a full menu with everything from pasta and salads to wings and burgers.

The place also has a fun, nostalgic vibe, with neon lights, an old-school atmosphere, and a focus on creating a community space for gamers of all ages. Some people visit just for the games, while others enjoy the social experience and the retro culture. Families will love the reasonable prices.

In 1869, Abram Kauffman gifted three acres of woods to the borough of Manheim. He wanted the land to be used as a public grove and park. The borough honored Kauffman’s request, and the area was known as Kauffman’s Park. In 1989, the property was leased and developed for a mini golf course and restaurant.

Decades

Today, The Shack boasts one of the most challenging mini golf courses in Lancaster County. The 19-hole course winds around mature trees and over a spring-fed stream lined with lush perennials. Though difficult for some, the course offers a red-cup option for younger and less-skilled players. Everything about The Shack screams nostalgia. From the restaurant to the wooden deck that overlooks the course and play area.

Changes and improvements have been made over the decades, but one thing has remained constant - the merry-go-round which is 100 years old this year. There will be a celebration to commemorate the event this summer.

The menu has many delicious options, but their broasted chicken may be the most popular. Other favorites include char-broiled burgers, wraps, and fresh-cut fries. A trip to The Shack

would not be complete without ice cream. Sundaes, milkshakes, floats, and shaved ice will satisfy any sweet tooth.

The Shack opens for the season in early April. Check the website for hours of operation.

With 25, PA has more drivein movie theaters than any other state except New York. Drive-ins peaked in the late 1950s and decreased in popularity over the years, causing most to close.

Haar’s DriveIn, in Dillsburg, York County, has stood the test of time. They’ve welcomed moviegoers for over 70 years. The third generation of the Haar family is running the drive-in today.

In addition to first-run films, Haar’s hosts special movie nights with old favorites. The annual screening of Grease is a one-night event that draws viewers, young and old. Preshow activities for the event include a dress-up contest, games, and a DJ.

The snack bar offers soughtafter movie fare like nachos, sandwiches, burgers, fries, and popcorn.

to twilight, the screen comes alive, and the story begins.

Haar’s usually opens in early May for the season.

I can’t think of another weekend activity that induces a connection to yesteryear more than a date night at a drive-in theater. When the day turns

In Bl m at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Spring is a symbol of renewal and growth when the first blooms bring expectation and excitement. Something is always in bloom at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This Pittsburgh landmark, famous for its glasshouse structures, was a gift to the city from Steel magnate Henry Phipps in 1893. The philanthropist wanted to create a space where people could learn about plants and nature. Though grand for its time, renovations and additions made over the years turned the Phipps into the impressive botanical garden it is now.

Phipps Conservatory is home to several themed rooms, from tropical rainforests to desert landscapes.

Garden, the Children’s Discovery Garden, and a rooftop edible garden where visitors can get inspiration for their vegetable gardens.

The 12,000-foot, 60-foot-high Tropical Forest Conservatory is a must-see, especially this spring when the exhibit “Tropical Forest Panama” is unveiled. Visitors will experience this biodiverse country through lush native vegetation. The sound of various species of monkeys will fill the air as you explore the Panama ecosystem. This sensory delight will take you on a journey where you’ll see live poison dart frogs, whip scorpions, and hissing cockroaches. Your Panama adventure begins at the ranger station, where you’ll prepare for the journey ahead. Tropical Forest Panama open on March 1. In addition to all the indoor gardens, the conservatory features outdoor gardens, including the Japanese Courtyard

The Spring Flower Show, “A Bloom for Every Room,” runs from March 22 through April 20. As with previous spring flower shows, the event highlights the quintessential flowers of spring, but this year, the Phipp is changing things up, with every room showcasing a different bloom. Each room will feature eye-catching displays celebrating the season’s beauty. Tulips, pansies, and lilies are among the flowers that will take center stage during the show.

Throughout the spring special exhibits will delight guests. In March Garden Railroad: Movie Magic brings the movie lot to live with whimsical scenes from several movie genres like science fiction, horror, westerns and more. The trains pass through miniature movie sets where you’ll hear an explosion amidst a bank robbery, see a helicopter flying above to shoot a horror movie featuring mushroom zombies. In addition to the amazing exhibits, the conservatory offers adult education programs that cover a variety of topics including gardening, culinary arts, nature talks, and more Children’s Story Hour and the Play Farmers’ Market are designed to engage children in a fun and informative environment.

conservatory also practices sensory inclusivity. The guides are educated in recognizing and assisting those experiencing sensory overload. For more information on sensory inclusivity at the Phipp, a “Know Before You Go Guide” is available on the website.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden is more than just a beautiful attraction; it also plays a role in environmental conservation and education, offering programs for visitors of all ages. The Center for Sustainable Landscapes at the Conservatory is one of the greenest buildings in the world and the first and only building to meet seven of the highest green certifications. It generates all its energy and treats all storm and sanitary water captured on-site.

There are so many things to see and do at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, from the Butterfly Forest to the Planets Earth exhibit, it is recommended that guests plan on at least a 2-hour visit.

All the gardens are wheelchair accessible except for the Stove Room. The
