I
’ve lived in Pennsylvania all my life. Both my husband and I were raised on farms here. We grew up on everything that’s great about Pennsylvania. We, along with our families, which extended to grandparents and cousins, enjoyed trips to its state parks, amusement parks and community celebrations. Our parents were our heroes. Before we knew it, it was our turn to be parents. We were eager to create wonderful childhood memories for our kids, as our parents had for us. This time around, it was double the fun! We could remember our own experiences and try to anticipate our kids’ reactions to their first roller coaster ride, paddling a canoe across a pristine lake or their first trip to the city. And just when we thought we knew exactly what would happen, there it was, that surprise that none of us expected, that special something that became a precious memory that turned into the story that’s told at every family get-together for years to come. Now, fast-forward, and we are grandparents. Experience tells us it’s going to be triple the fun this time! We’ve already been blessed to see the wonder in our grandson’s eyes when he came face-to-face with the bears and lions at Lake Tobias. And the hayride to the pumpkin patch where he discovered, along with his Aunt Emily, the most perfect pumpkin to take home. We can only imagine what the coming holidays, months, and years will bring! There is no better place than Pennsylvania for you and your family to begin the journey of building your own special memories. With all the holidays and special events taking place this time of year, this issue will surely inspire you!

NORTH The Crestmont Inn 180 Crestmont Drive, Eagles Mere, PA 17731 800-522-8767 www.crestmont-inn.com The Crestmont Inn has only ever existed for one purpose, to provide a beautiful retreat for those seeking a pleasant getaway. Around the turn of the 20th century, the opulent 110-room Crestmont Inn was in its heyday. Guests were treated to tennis, boating and swimming in the pristine Eagles Mere Lake, not to mention delectable dining at the inn.
Unique
Over the years, the grand hotel perched atop Eagles Mere became rundown and was eventually demolished. Some of Crestmont’s smaller buildings have been restored and repurposed. Today, the guest rooms of the inn are in the old Evergreen Lodge, which once housed the hotel’s summer staff. Before the renovation, the Evergreen had 40 small bedrooms with just two bathrooms. Now, all 15 rooms and suites have private baths. Next door, the Crestmont’s three dining areas are located in the original hotel’s former washhouse, where all of the linens were laundered.

The Crestmont Inn
Rather than grand and opulent, the Crestmont can more appropriately be referred to as peaceful and romantic. While the inn itself may have changed, dining at the inn still has that grand hotel feel. The food is delicious and the wine selection is exceptional. The Reynolds Mansion 101 W. blend of Gothic, Italianate and Queen Anne styles. The mansion is adorned with original handcrafted woodwork, stained glass windows and inlaid parquet floors, of which no two are alike. The bed and breakfast features eight beautifully appointed guest rooms, some with fireplaces and Jacuzzis. A delicious three-course gourmet breakfast greets guests each morning. A wonderful time to stay at the Reynolds Mansion is during Bellefonte’s Victorian Christmas, which will be held this year on Friday, Dec. 13, through Sunday, Dec. 15. The mansion will host a Victorian High Tea while the entire town celebrates the season with numerous events designed to represent a Victorian-era Christmas.
Jeremiah Dixon came through the area to mark the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. On Aug. 24, their notes read, “Passed John McKinley’s house and crossed Marsh Creek.” Once the survey was complete, it was discovered that McKinley’s home was located on the MasonDixon Line. Two-thirds of the house is in Pennsylvania and one-third in Maryland, hence the name Mary-Penn Bed & Breakfast. The home changed hands several times over the years before the Waybright family purchased the 246-acre property in 1979. Today, Bea and David Waybright share their unique B&B with guests who have the extraordinary ability choose whether to stay in Pennsylvania or Maryland within the same house. The B&B has four guestrooms, three of which are in Maryland and one in Pennsylvania. Although it’s located near Gettysburg attractions, guests of the Mary-Penn will feel pleasantly removed from the hustle and bustle. The B&B is located at the end of a 1-mile country lane situated at the back 200 acres of the 900-acre Waybright farm. Rocky Springs Park got its start in 1855 when Lancaster butcher Michael Trissler purchased land along the Conestoga River and built a 2½-story inn. Over the years, the property was used for picnics and other gatherings. In 1899, the property was sold to Thomas Rees who hired Herman Griffiths to manage his park. Griffiths was instrumental in organizing events throughout the summer,

Industrial Revolution, which occurred roughly between 1840 and 1870. This second Industrial Revolution revolved around steel, railroads and electricity. Robert Heysham Sayre (1824-1907) was the chief engineer of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and, as such, he built his Gothic Revival-style mansion overlooking the railroad, which ran along the Lehigh River below. Sayre’s mentor and boss was Lehigh Valley Railroad founder Asa Packer (1805-1879). Part of Sayre’s job was to assist Packer in his desire to better the community through education and arts institutions. Though it was Packer’s vision, Sayre was the person who ultimately made Lehigh University a reality. As Packer’s right-hand man at the railroad, Sayre was entrusted with the responsibility of making the school a success. Sayre’s other contributions to Bethlehem include St. Luke’s University Hospital, Fountain Hill Opera House and Bethlehem Iron Works, the precursor to Bethlehem Steel Corporation. During the restoration of Sayre’s home, great care was given to preserve and restore the exterior details of the structure. The interior spaces were meticulously brought back to their former appearance. Throughout his 36 years with Rocky Springs, Griffiths added amusements including a roller coaster and Dentzel carousel. In 1923, a carousel building was added to house the carousel. Rocky Springs became hugely popular when a fun house, Ferris wheel, penny arcade, shooting gallery and refreshment stands were added. The trolley from Lancaster city would bring cars full of people to the park for a day of recreation. The park closed in 1966, opened again in 1979 but closed again after just two years. Today, the site of the former amusement park is home to the Rocky Springs Bed & Breakfast. The former mansion house has four guest rooms with private baths and a lovely cottage with a private patio. Guests of Rocky Springs will have the opportunity to take a Covered Bridge Driving Tour. The tour designed especially for Rocky Springs takes about one hour and takes you through four covered bridges and past four lime kilns, several Amish schools and other historic sites that will be marked on the directions. Evidence of Rocky Springs Park can be found throughout the property. Although the Dentzel carousel is gone, the carousel house still stands, as well as a vintage ticket booth and a set of roller coaster cars.

Harry Packer Mansion
Harry Packer Mansion 19 Packer Ave., Jim Thorpe, PA 18229 570-325-8566 www.murdermansion.com Asa Packer had the Harry Packer Mansion built as a wedding present for his son Harry. In 1880, Harry hired renowned architect Addison Hutton to add a front veranda and study wing. The veranda still retains the original Mahogany ceiling and tile floor. Though years of neglect took its toll on the property, Robert and Patricia Handwerk painstakingly brought the magnificent mansion back to life. Today, the mansion has six elegantly adorned guestrooms in the main house and six in the Carriage House. This yearm the Handwerks celebrate 30 years of hospitality. In addition to being a wonderful retreat, the mansion becomes a crime scene on Murder Mystery Weekends. Condé Nast named the Harry Packer Mansion “the best Murder Mystery on the East Coast.” If the Harry Packer Mansion looks familiar to you, it may be because you’re a Disney fan. Disney Imagineers were so impressed by the imposing mansion overlooking Jim Thorpe that it became the inspiration for Disney World’s Haunted Mansion. The Harry Packer Mansion could not be more pleasantly situated. The village of Jim Thorpe is lined with quaint shops and restaurants. Wintertime is a great time for a Jim Thorpe escape because the 21 inns and B&Bs are giving guests more than 20 coupons that can be used for shopping, dining and spa services. To take advantage of the great deals in Jim Thorpe, you must book your stay during the months of January, February and March.
The mansion is located adjacent to the Asa Packer Mansion, which is open for tours April through October and during Jim Thorpe’s Olde Time Christmas. Check the website for details. WEST Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa 422 E. State St., Sharon, PA 16146 724-346-3046 www.buhlmansion.com You might call Donna and James Winner the champions of lost causes. Due to lucrative business ventures, the Mercer County couple has made it their mission to rescue dozens of community landmarks from the wrecking ball. Their motto says it all, “to whom much is given, much is expected.” Prior to James’ death in 2010, the Winners had already embarked on many successful business and charitable ventures. The most noticeable contribution to the community was the purchase and renovation of three properties in great need of repair. Unlike the first two, the Buhl Mansion was not an inn, but the multimillion-dollar renovation of the stone “castle” created a romantic inn that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Buhl Mansion was the home of steel magnate Frank H. Buhl. The Richardsonian Romanesque castle was built for his wife, Julia. Frank’s gift to his wife took six years to complete and cost $60,000. Through years of neglect, the mansion was stripped of many of its original treasures. But, as with all the innkeepers in this article, the Winners loved it back to life. Today, the Buhl Mansion offers 10 lavish guestrooms with gas fireplaces. Each bathroom has its own Jacuzzi for two with separate showers. Everything

ost of us get a little overwhelmed this time of year. Malls, Internet, T.V. – everyone is shopping for that perfect gift. Few of us really enjoy fighting the hoards of crowds at the mall, but sitting at the computer doesn’t exactly give you that “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” feel, either. What if your Christmas shopping included strolling along the cobblestone paths of a quaint Bavarian village? Old-world inspired homes and shops line the winding walkways and cobblestone village Marktplatz of Stoudtburg Village in Adamstown. The unique shopping destination was the brainchild of Adamstown entrepreneur Edward D. Stoudt, whose adjacent businesses include Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Stoudt’s Brewing Company. Stoudtburg Village was inspired by the 16th-century walled city of Rothenburg, Germany. The village has 16 shops, all designed to transport shoppers back in time to a medieval marketplace.
Stoudtburg Village. The shopping trip would not be complete without giving your taste buds a treat at one of the eateries, the wine shop or the Village Sweet Shoppe. A holiday favorite at Stoudtburg Village is Christkindl Market, an annual celebration of a German tradition that dates back to the 13th century. In Europe, the markets are held during Advent and are called Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) or Christkindlmarkt (Christ child market). Christkindlmarkt is typically held in the town square, where food, drink and seasonal items are sold from open-air stalls. Traditional singing and dancing add to the festive atmosphere. On Saturday, Nov. 30, the annual Festival of Trees, strolling carolers and festive lights kick off Stoudtburg’s Christkindl Market. The following Saturday, Dec. 7, more than 500 luminarias will add a special holiday glow to the already lovely village. Extended hours are set for both weekends.

In Pennsylvania, ushering out the old and welcoming in the new has practically become an art form. Big or small, towns throughout the state put their own unique touch on New Year’s Eve. Times Square may host the most famous midnight celebration, but certainly not the most unique. I think we have some serious contenders for that distinction right here in the Keystone State. Some municipalities pay homage to their manufacturing heritage, such as Red Lion where they drop a cigar as a nod to the town’s past as a cigar-manufacturing center. And then, there are towns whose celebrations are capped by dropping or raising something that plays off their name, like Dillsburg where they drop a pickle. One of my favorite New Year’s Eve events takes place on December 30 and 31 in Bethlehem, Northampton County. PEEPSFEST™ is a fun, festive two-day celebration where families can enjoy activities including arts and crafts, live music, movies and contests. PEEPSFEST™ is presented annually by Just Born, manufacturers of those lovable marshmallow PEEPS®, plus Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales and other candies we all love. Bethlehem, Pa., is the home of the world headquarters and production facility of the 90-yearold family-owned company. Like Christkindlmarkt, PEEPSFEST™ has become one of ArtsQuest’s signature events, held at the arts and cultural center known as SteelStacks. Admission to the event is free, but some of the festivities require a ticket. Whether you’re young or not so young, a popular activity at the festival is PEEPS® s’more making, a sweet twist on the traditional marshmallow treat. On Dec. 31, area mascots will battle it out in the Mascot Dash at noon, while the PEEPSFEST™ 5K steps off at 1 p.m. New for 2013 are appearances by some cute and cuddly friends, including penguins from the Lehigh Valley Zoo. As the name would suggest, this New Year’s Eve party has its own unique countdown. But, because this is a kid-friendly event, the 4½-foot PEEPS® chick will drop at 5:15 p.m., well before bedtime. A spectacular fireworks display will follow the countdown. Photos courtesy of ArtsQuest
