An Eco-Friendly Guide to Summer in the City by Paris Hofer

in the country, and there are lots of ways to participate in this lifestyle during your summer vacation. Whether you’re interested in food, shopping, or simply spending time outside, we have you covered on all the city’s greatest eco-friendly experiences to try out this summer.
6/WHERE CALGARY
JULY — SEPTEMBER
Getting Around Calgary has several environmentally conscious ways to easily get around the city. Our transit system can take you almost everywhere and is simple to navigate using the Calgary Transit app. On top of this, Calgary has lots of accessible bike paths around the city, even downtown, along with plenty of bike rentals to choose from. For an even more fun experience, check out Bird or Neuron e-scooters, both of which have permits in the city. Now that you have your environmentally friendly transportation all set for your summer vacation, you will need some places to go. Here are our recommendations.
Eco-Friendly Eats
TOP: MILK JAR | DAMIAN LAMARTINE || BOTTOM: TRAVEL ALBERTA
Now, we all know trying new and local foods is one of the most important parts about travelling to a new place. Luckily, Calgary has multiple dining options that are not only eco-friendly, but also delicious! The Coup (p 24) is a local restaurant with an entirely vegetarian menu. They serve an abundance of vegan options as well. They pride themselves on using as many local, ethical, and organic ingredients as possible in their food and cocktails. Through doing this, they not only provide a vibrant, eco-friendly menu for everyone to enjoy, but they also support local farmers and food suppliers. Some other local dining options include The Allium (p 23), a plant-based restaurant, and V Burger (p 26), which serves fast food that is entirely plantbased. To get an even more hands-on experience with Calgary’s local food scene, check out the Calgary Farmers’ Market (p 20). There, you will be surrounded with an abundance of organic, ethically produced food from more than 75 different vendors. Even more exciting, they are opening a second location in Greenwich this year – something you will not want to miss!
Sustainable Shopping Calgary is known for its unpredictable weather, which means you will need some rainy-day activities in your back pocket. Shopping is a simple, yet fun option that can be done in an eco-friendly way. The growing popularity of thrift shopping in Calgary means the city has more than enough second-
hand stores to keep you occupied for a whole day. Find staples like Value Village and Goodwill, or try local favourites like 17th Ave Thrift, Thriftopia, Thrift Couture, Fair’s Fair Books, and many more. Not only will shopping in these places save you money, but you will also be helping the environment through buying something that otherwise could have ended up in a landfill. Aside from second-hand stores, Calgary also has some eco-friendly businesses for you to add to your list, including Growing Co. (p 21), a boutique that sells organic, ethically made clothing items and toys for children. The Apothecary in Inglewood (p 20) is also known for their sustainability efforts through selling zero waste goods. Stop by Milk Jar (p 22) to check out the factory that brings their plantbased and phthalate-free fragrance candles to life. The options for a rainy-day, sustainable shopping spree are endless!
Exploring the Outdoors Although our weather can be temperamental, Calgary is known to get particularly hot during the summer months. This means that you’ll want to spend as much time as possible outside. Calgary’s bike trails are more than just an easy way to get around. Calgary River Wheels (p 20) is a bike rental shop along the Bow River that doubles as a tour guide, showing you what places to check out in the city. Getting there by bike is not only fun, but environmentally conscious as well! Here in Calgary, we are lucky to not only have amazing city skyline views, but also a beautiful river that crosses the city. Walking, biking, scootering, or even rollerblading alongside the Bow River will leave you breathless, and not just from the physical activity. Rotary Park is a perfect picnicking spot that is easily accessible and has both city and river views. The park rises above the street below, making for a beautiful view of the sunset – very romantic! North Glenmore Park is another great picnic spot, with forested areas as well as an accessible, rocky beach along the Elbow River. No matter the weather, or type of activity you are looking for, there are endless options to enjoy your summer vacation in Calgary in an environmentally conscious way!

Calgary’s push to create vibrant spaces through public art By Kate Barker
W
ith roots in agriculture and as the executive headquarters of the oil and gas industry, Calgary can present a cold, industrial image. Sprinkled throughout the city, however, are moments of vibrant light, connecting visitors and locals alike to beautiful displays of creativity. Calgary is home to over 1300 works of public art, a combination of large pieces commissioned by the city, seasonal popups, and neighbourhood mural projects.

10/WHERE CALGARY
02 Wonderland Artist: Jaume Plensa Location: Downtown outside the Bow Building This commissioned sculpture is a popular attraction in downtown Calgary, and it is a favourite spot for photo ops. The large statue of a girl’s head represents the youthful and vibrant city of Calgary, and the interactive nature of the piece allows people to see it from all angles. Walk inside the sculpture to get an insider’s perspective of downtown or stand back and admire the work as a whole. JULY — SEPTEMBER

WONDERLAND
01 Hawk Hill Calgary Sentinels Artist: Beverly Pepper Location: Ralph Klein Park The towering sculpture is “an entrance that people are invited to walk through and experience,” says artist Beverly Pepper. “I wanted something that was inviting, but also something that reflected this area.” The entire piece was designed to work with the landscape and provide a unique experience with each and every visit. As an added surprise, the third sculpture – the smaller, central one – has shown viewers it “has a voice of its own” as it “speaks” when the wind passes through.
03 Convergence Artists: Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan Location: Rocky Ridge Recreation Facility Designed to respond to the natural environment, the two statues interact with the changing light and with each other, depending on the visitor’s viewpoint. The natural angles and forms were inspired by flocks of birds, the movement of herds, the curves of Chinook clouds, and the natural elements of nature like horns, nests, and dens.
WOMEN ARE PERSONS!
5 BUMP MURAL BY ASTRO
07 Kawa’pomahkaiks Artist: Adrian Stimson Location: International Avenue Public Art Project Part of the Siksika Nation, artist Adrian Stimson showcases Kawa’pomahkaik, or Animals That Roam the Prairie, as homage to the animals who used to roam the landscape. The location reflects the changes as the city grew to impede those movements. Each animal is labeled in both English and Blackfoot, and links provide audio to hear the Indigenous words.

06 Beltline Urban Mural Project Artist: Various Location: Beltline, Hazelview, Inglewood, Silver Springs, downtown In an effort to brighten the community through artwork that’s accessible to everyone, BUMP began in 2017 and has continued to thrive in the urban community. Artists from across the country and around the world have contributed to brighten the spaces, and the annual summer BUMP Festival (p 4) highlights creativity while bringing in top artists.

CHINOOK ARC
05 Women are Persons! Artist: Barbara Paterson Location: Olympic Plaza This statue marks an integral moment in history. The Famous Five: Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney, and Irene Parlby, are depicted celebrating their victory that secured the right for women to be considered fully legal “persons” in Canada in 1929, paving the way for the first woman senator a year later. The interactive piece of public art invites visitors to intermingle with the women, celebrate their victory, and join them to “make the best possible contribution” to their own generation.

A true community project, Chinook Arc was created through collaboration between the artists, an external company specializing in interactive art experiences, and the Beltline community. The unique shape represents both past and present, bringing together memories of the streetcar loop around the community as well as the Chinook arc that blankets the sky. The sculpture emits a soft glow, and the interactive piece lights up even the darkest of days.

JULY — SEPTEMBER
The OG Rooftop: Vin Room One of the city’s longest standing rooftop patios is located along 4th Street in the bustling community of Mission… Yet it is still considered a secret retreat that only locals seem to know about. With its full sun exposure and cushioned corner nooks, you’ll be comfortably seated high above the street, ready to explore their 50-bottle ‘by the glass’ selection. Not sure what to sip? Join them for their daily happy hour from 3-6 and take advantage of their sommelier’s choice of red or white for just $7 a glass. For those who like to keep four feet on the ground, Vin Room’s street level patio invites furry friends to relax, offering dog bed seating, paw-secco, and crunchy treats. The New Kid: Central Taps & Food One of the Beltline’s newest restaurants came out swinging with an outdoor space nearly as large as their indoor space. Their menu, filled with “damn good food” offers a wide variety of pub style eats, created by Chef Mike Pigot, who has been on many networks including Amazon Prime, Cooking Channel, and Food Network.
When the sun is shining , Calgarians flock to outdoor dining options . This year , for the third year in a row , the City of Calgary will waive permit fees allowing more pop-up patios to overtake parking lots , sidewalks , and streets . With so many options to choose from , here is a list of unique options and what makes them stand out above the crowd .
Unique food offerings include Table Side Truffle Fries, Charcuterie Pizza, and their Maui Pie for dessert. When it comes to their crushable drinks, you’ll want to check out their collection of spritz’s, the rotating beer list, and curious options too – like their PB&J Old Fashioned and Spicy Tequila Pineapple Mule. The Establishment: The Ship & Anchor There’s not a Calgarian that hasn’t heard of The Ship. This iconic pub, located in the heart of 17th Ave has seen many-a-celebration. Inside you’ll find a dimly lit, wood-laden pub that’s home to oneof-a-kind experiences like their weekly Punk Rock Bingo. While outside, an expansive patio covered in communal wooden picnic tables, with many tops painted to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, encourages old and new friends to gather. The Ship has always been a safe space for all. The people watching is next level and The Ship’s drink menu can keep you there all day as it hosts an impressive list of beer on draft and equally large offering of cans, tall boys, coolers, and ciders. When it comes to food, their Nacho Platter is one of the city’s cheesiest, while their Ship Burger is a classic go-to. Those with kiddos love Chicken Tendies, the weekend brunch option of a Little Breakfast, and maple-syrup-drenched Pancakes.
The Indoor/ Outdoor Park: Porch When the rain hits and other patios have their patrons scattering, you can count on Porch, one of 17th Ave’s newest restaurants, to keep you nice and dry. The exterior patio side of Porch restaurant has been constructed to feature a mechanical accordion rooftop that can quickly close with the touch of a button, bringing you magically indoors. The restaurant’s permanent interior side features a large skylight and tables nestled in a grove of leafy green plants, flanked with an enormous tree… You’ll believe you’re outdoors no matter where you are at Porch! To continue their eco-fantasy, Porch offers an array of seating options including several fully operational rope swings to sip and snack in. For dinner you’ll find a comprehensive menu, and for those late diners there is an evening menu with elevated and playful favourites like the Porch Hotdog and the Porch Poutine with double smoked bacon, Quebec cheese curds, sour cream, and topped with barnyard gravy. When it comes to drinks, Porch’s cocktail menu reads like a breath of fresh air featuring names like the Early Sunrise, Dancing Under the Sun, and the Plight of the Bumblebee. Their offerings also include a generous list of wines, creative twists on classic cocktails, and even their own canned beverages: Porch Pink Lemonade and Gin Garden. Riverside: Rooftop Bar at Simmons Located on the rooftop of the historical Simmons building in East Village, this year the landmark will see a new culinary experience for guests. For this concept, Chef Connie DeSousa was inspired by New York City pizza and the oyster bars in Grand Central Station. The menu will feature pepperoni pizzas from Connie and John’s Pizza alongside an array of seafood options. “Think raw oysters and opulent seafood towers with giant crab claws, shrimp, oysters, and ceviche,” says DeSousa. During the day, Rooftop Bar has full sun exposure with optional umbrellas for those who may forget their SPF, and as day turns to night, you’ll continue to keep warm beside the fireplace or under one of the many gas heaters.

NEIGHBOURHOOD SPOTLIGHT
K
ensington is a small business district located just north of downtown along the Bow River. This historic district has been around for more than 100 years, and it hosts some great small businesses in the city. It zips together the residential communities of Sunnyside and Hillhurst, giving the area the feeling of a small village in the heart of the city.
Kensington
It’s fun. It’s accessible. It’s kind of whimsical.

Kensington is known for small, independent businesses. Despite being in the heart of the city, this neighbourhood feels like a village of friendly, outgoing characters with a few surprises along the way. The district takes up eight blocks, creating two sides of a square. It’s easily accessible. From downtown, cross the Peace Bridge and walk or bike the 2km path along the beautiful Bow River. Rent an e-scooter to get there faster, or get off at the Sunnyside LRT stop. There is also plenty of parking if you’re arriving by car. Walking around Kensington on a sunny day takes about an hour and a half, longer if you explore what the shops and stops have to offer. Try the self-guided art walk to take in the murals and projects throughout the neighbourhood, or test your puzzler with the Alberta Food Finder (p 23) app and try the scavenger hunt that explores the area and businesses. The neighbourhood is home to some unique places. Plaza Theatre (p 20) is a refurbished vintage theatre with a speakeasy style bar that screens new and classic movies. Relax in the deep purple couches under the chandeliers. Satisfy your sweet tooth with magical creations. Both Crave Cupcakes (p 24) and CHUNK’D (p 23) have brick-and-mortar locations in Kensington. Their delightful cupcakes and cookies are the perfect summer treat, and both places have a huge local following. Kensington is also home to exclusive retail stores, including InGear (p 21), selling designer jewellery and unique gifts, and Kismet Clothing (p 21), with a boutique selection of clothing, jewellery, and accessories from Canadian designers. The Beehive (p 20) is a little yellow shop selling organic natural remedies, skincare products, and, of course, natural honey. The Hidden Gem (p 21) is a popular attraction south of Calgary, but it’s made its way into the city. This year-round indoor market features numerous local artisans, handcrafts, and products, all under one roof. It’s the perfect way for boutique businesses to get into a storefront location while working together to help the community. Hungry? Kensington is the place where foodies unite. There’s great fire-roasted pizza at Pulcinella Restaurant (p 25) or try something surprising, like dill pickle on pizza, at The Mash (p 25). The Pie Junkie (p 25) sells sweet and savoury pies. Take a handheld pie to enjoy on a picnic by the river or order something custom for an upcoming event. Bodega Restaurant (p 23) serves fusion Caribbean Cuisine or get some classic fried chicken from Chicken on the Way (p 23). Container Bar (p 24) turns an ugly and unused alleyway into a cool space, and Eat Crow (p 24) serves simple, uncomplicated, and tasty food. Wet your whistle at a local watering hole, or take home some unique labels to enjoy later. Kensington Wine Market (p 21) has been around for 30 years, and they continue to bring the best wine, beer, and whisky to the area. Find exclusive labels at Urban Cellars (p 23) and enjoy their excellent customer service. Sip wine and fill up on a homemade, tapas style menu at Winebar Kensington (p 26), or simply enjoy the views of the Bow River and the Calgary skyline with a fine drink and delightful snack at Oxbow (p 25) in the Hotel Arts Kensington. This cozy restaurant is one of the best in Calgary. Whether you’re enjoying a specialty coffee, taking in the sights from a sunny patio, finding a unique food or shopping experience, or just enjoying summer, there is something everyone will love in Kensington. -KATE BARKER
Calgary Summer Neighbourhoods Beltline Named after an early streetcar route, the Beltline neighbourhood is immediately south of downtown, along the Elbow River. This is one of the most densely populated areas in the city, and it’s a great spot for unique nightlife, restaurants, and urban culture. Bowness In the northwest, this neighbourhood is a former town that amalgamated with the City of Calgary in 1964, and is most well-known for Bowness Park. During the summer, the park is an excellent attraction with picnic sites, walking trails, mini golf, and serene views along the Bow River. Bridgeland Northeast of downtown, Bridgeland is known for excellent walkability, multiuse pathways, and attractions like the Wilder Institute/ Calgary Zoo (p 20) and TELUS Spark (p 20). Bridgeland is a must-see during summer in the city. The area is also known for restaurants, summer markets, and shopping. Visit downtown for the height of Calgary’s culture including world class restaurants, theatre companies, and the spectacular downtown library. Inglewood As the original main street for Calgary, Inglewood’s history runs deep. Today, it’s known as the arts district, and it’s home to galleries such as The Esker Foundation (p 17) and Circa Vintage Art (p 17). It’s also known for unique shopping with vintage finds, boutique businesses, interesting eateries, the night market, music venues, and festivals. WHERE TO EXPLORE
“It’s a little bit of history. It’s played its role in building our city.” Connie Giannoulis-Stuart, Proprietor
In the Beginning It all started as a hope and dream of Con Giannoulis, who left his home in Greece in search of better opportunities. Opening Caesar’s Steak House was a milestone, and his hard work and dedication to the ritual of dining made it the spot to go for excellent food, first class service, and a truly fine dining experience. Better Business Dubbed “the second petroleum club”, Caesar’s became the spot for business lunches, happy hour cocktails, and making deals in Alberta’s growing oil and gas industry. Even today, the health of the city can be judged by how busy Caesar’s is at lunchtime, as businesses start scheming and dreaming about growth for their organizations.
16/WHERE CALGARY
Alberta Beef The Caesar’s experience is based on serving high quality Alberta Beef from local suppliers. Not only is this the best beef in the world, but Caesar’s only serves the best of the best. The restaurant exclusively sources the top tier cuts and premium grades for the best dining experience, every time. Nostalgic Experience More than consistently excellent food, Caesar’s is known for exceptional service, time honoured cocktails, and a fine atmosphere. None of those elements have changed in the last 50 years. The restaurant serves up a taste of nostalgia with their plush seating, traditional service, tableside experience, amazing dishes, and award-winning wine list. This level of fine dining is kind of a lost art, but it can still be found in the dining room of Caesar’s Steak House. -KATE BARKER JULY — SEPTEMBER

Chris Curreri takes a more modern approach to art, using photography and sculptures in his exhibition, That, There, It. Both installations will be on display from June 23 to September 18. If the cute animals are not reason enough for you to visit the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo (right) this summer, learning about all of their wildlife conservation efforts might do the trick. Behind the scenes of the fun enclosures and yummy concession stands that families have enjoyed for years, the zoo works hard to support 16 different conservation programs for at-risk species in the wild. These efforts include conservation translocation, which is the act of safely moving animals from one place to another to increase population, as well as hands on community conservation and animal care. They also offer youth education programs to spread awareness. If you want to help, visiting the zoo is a great place to start! The zoo also recommends raising awareness about species-at-risk and taking steps to reduce your carbon footprint – small steps towards a big change! -Paris Hofer

Park Life
Prince’s Island Park is a hotspot of activity, hosting many summer festivals. When there isn’t a celebration happening, the park is a serene oasis with trails along the Bow River, a playground, gardens, and the award-winning River Café (p 26). Craving a day at the beach? A round of golf? Seemingly endless trails? Find it all and more at Fish Creek Provincial Park. This giant urban park has everything for that perfect summer day. Nature meets art at Elbow Island Park. After being submerged by the flood in 2013, the park became inaccessible until it was revamped by local artists Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett. Now, it’s a magical journey of art and unique ecology. High Park transforms the 2 acre space on top of Centre City Parkade into a public space filled with art, music, and community. during off-peak times and every 5 - 10 minutes during the morning and afternoon rush. You can get a bus-route map and a transfer from the bus driver if you need to change buses to reach your final destination. 403-262-1000, calgarytransit.com
