PUBLISHER'S NOTE Saying this summer didn't turn out as planned is a wee bit of an understatement. When COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in March, everything changed, and the tourism industry was hit particularly hard. Strict new regulations shut down our destination towns and the Canadian Rockies went quiet. As businesses begin reopening, staff reclaim their jobs and visitors return, we still face a lot of uncertainty. The theme of this magazine – Off the Beaten Path – was decided before coronavirus became part of our every-day vocabulary. But it is fitting, as we come out of lockdown with social distancing still in place, to experience the mountains on roads less travelled. The vast landscapes of the Canadian Rockies have plenty of wideopen spaces to explore. As always, we’re here to help. Whether it’s discovering the best places to get Off the Beaten Path (p 10) or adventuring with wildlife who need Room to Roam (p 16), we hope you discover new and wonderful places. Every summer, here at Where Canadian Rockies, we look forward to seeing the mountains come alive. This year our anticipation is stronger than ever. This is a paradise like none other, so get out there and make the most of your time here. Enjoy the spectacular scenery, the wondrous wildlife and some good old-fashioned Rockies hospitality. Welcome to the mountains. Ken Wetherell | Publisher

to vast wild spaces, the Canadian Rockies always promise adventure. If you’re looking to escape the crowds and find a unique journey, read on! We’ve uncovered some of the best ways to explore the Canadian Rockies,

The mountains always look stunning from above. Scenic helicopter rides provide a spectacular taste of the beauty the Canadian Rockies have to offer. Sightseeing packages can often be combined with backcountry hiking, fishing or even weddings to add that extra slice of perfection. Looking to hit the skies? Try Alpine (p 37), Rockies Heli Canada (p 37) or Peregrine Helicopters (p 80). Looking to make a day of it? Try a heli-hike from White Mountain Adventures (p 38) and explore the mountains of the backcountry, far from any trails.

Down To Earth If the backcountry isn’t your thing, a via ferrata is a great way to get amazing and unique mountain views, above and away from the crowds. Italian for iron road, a via ferrata combines the excitement of rock climbing with the safety of always being connected to a metal cable, as well as the convenience of added steps, handholds and bridges. Via ferratas are fun and exhilarating, and no experience is required to participate. Mt Norquay (p 35) has numerous options, from short, 2.5-hour trips to full day excursions. In Golden, BC, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort offers several via ferrata experiences to complement their summer hiking and downhill biking.

If the backcountry isn’t your thing, a via ferrata is a great way to get amazing and unique mountain views, above and away from the crowds.

Bring it down to the ground with amazing activities for adventure seekers and first-time backcountry explorers. Pack trips are a great way to access the wild spaces of the Canadian Rockies the way the original guides did – on horseback. Create your custom backcountry pack trip with Timberline Tours (p 39) or experience the traditional methods of packing with modern comforts with Brewster Mountain Pack Trains (p 38). If you’re looking to access the beauty of untouched mountain landscapes without “roughing it”, try a backcountry trip with Banff Trail Riders (p 38). Their tent camps offer a secured camping experience while their lodges add a touch of luxury to the traditional backcountry experience.

In Banff, try a Signature Guided Hike from Discover Banff Tours (p 40) and explore your guide’s favourite trails. Learn about the natural environment and its wild inhabitants at the Lake Louise Summer Gondola (p 38). Take a self-guided tour of the wildflowerfilled alpine meadows or enhance your experience with a guided hike. Along the Icefields Parkway, take an interpretative tour of the ancient glaciers with professional guides from Athabasca Glacier Icewalks (p 35) or Rockaboo Mountain Adventures (p 78). Walk on, drink from and learn about glaciers with a Columbia Icefield Adventure from Pursuit (p 35). In Jasper, escape to the water with Jasper Raft Tours (p 81), Jasper Rafting Adventures (p 81), Jasper’s Whitewater Rafting (p 81), Maligne Rafting Adventures (p 81) or Rocky Mountain River Guides (p 82). Or, book a guided tour with Sundog Tours (p 77). The BC Rockies are a treasure trove of adventure, nestled in untouched wild spaces. Out Of The Ordinary Getting to the unique places of the Canadian Rockies doesn’t have to be extreme – or cost a lot of money. There are countless day-hikes that can bring you far from civilization, and they can be accessed almost anywhere. In Kananaskis, try Chester Lake or Heart Creek for moderate hikes with big rewards. In Banff, Tunnel Mountain and Sulphur Mountain are easy summits with big views, or go even higher with the hike to the Cascade Amphitheater. The Icefields Parkway offers stunning and accessible hikes including the Bow Summit Lookout, the Parker Ridge Trail and Helen Lake Trail. In Jasper, try hiking alongside Maligne Lake or up the ridge to Whistler’s Summit, accessible from the top of the Jasper Skytram (p 82). The BC Rockies have a secret stash of trails to explore and their remoteness attracts only the most adventurous of travellers. Try mountain biking in Golden or Revelstoke on their world-class trails. Hike to spectacular waterfalls in Kootenay National Park or visit large and impressive icefields in Glacier National Park.

Whether you’re looking to get far away from an average day, revive with a digital detox, or just escape the ordinary, the Canadian Rockies have countless ways for you to immerse in nature and escape the crowds, far off the beaten path.

Nothing enhances your understanding and appreciation for an area like an interpretive tour. Qualified guides have years of experience and boundless knowledge about the Canadian Rockies, and they love to show you around their home.

1. Guides There are many wonders to discover in the Canadian Rockies. We recommend the Handbook of the Canadian Rockies by Ben Gad, available at Canmore Museum Gift Shop (p 53), Indigo Books in Cascade Shops (p 50) and The Viewpoint (p 51). 2. Rain Gear The weather changes quickly in the mountains, so it’s best to be prepared with rain gear, such as these breathable and waterproof Future Light Rainwear shells from The North Face (p 46) or Wild Mountain (p 85). 3. Layers The mountains can be cold, even in the summer. Always bring warm layers and be prepared for all conditions. We don’t like cold feet, so we purchased these socks from Smartwool (p 44). 4. Hiking Boots Or other waterproof footwear. We recommend hikers from Kumpfy Shoes (p 53), or runners from Strides (p 53). 14

whererockies.com CANADIAN ROCKIES

5. Camera You’ll want to capture all those mountain memories! Cameras are available from Banff Photography (p 51), located in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, and Tekarra Colour (p 85) in Jasper. Do you know how to use it? Take a course from Banff Photography and take better photos – even with your cell phone! 6. Sleeping Bag The mountains can be cold, especially at night! A quality sleeping bag will keep you warm and comfortable. Don’t forget a sleeping pad or air mattress under that sleeping bag. Not only do these items keep you comfortable, they add another layer between you and the ground for added warmth. 7. Camp Kitchen Fires are nice, but weather conditions and fire bans may prevent you from having that campfire. A camp stove will ensure you can cook your food, no matter what.

Are you camping in the Canadian Rockies this summer? By Kate Barker Photo by Damian Lamartine

The Canadian Rockies are an excellent place to get outdoors. But the weather can be unpredictable. We’ve come up with a list of recommendations so you can enjoy your camping experience. Are you prepared?

8. Tent Make sure your tent is waterproof and check it before heading out. We recommend a 3-season tent, for those surprise summer snowstorms. Don’t have a tent? Rent it!

12. Tarp You’ll be surprised how much warmer and dryer you'll be if you set up your tent on a tarp or footprint. For really wet weather, a tarp strung above your tent will add an extra layer of protection.

9. First-Aid Kit You never know what you might encounter in the mountains. It’s best to be prepared with a first-aid kit and the knowledge on how to use it.

Don’t want to bring all this stuff with you? Rent it at Bactrax (p 43). They have everything you need for backpacking, car camping and so much more.

10. Backpack If you’re hiking into the backcountry, or if you just plan on making a few day excursions, a good backpack will make all the difference! Look for a well-balanced, framed backpack that fits properly, so you can go all day!

Samples for this photo came from: The North Face (p 46), Wild Mountain (p 85) Bactrax (p 43), Kumpfy Shoes (p 53), Smartwool (p 44), Banff Home Hardware (p 49) Canadian Tire (p 53) and The Viewpoint (p 51).

11. Bear Spray Even in the front country, bear spray is an essential wildlife deterrent. Always keep it with you, keep it accessible and know how to use it!

Wild animals also love the warm weather! From spring into autumn, wildlife are very active as they feed and breed. Often, they’re wandering about in the same places as people, whether you see them or not. In the Rockies, it’s not uncommon to see elk, deer, bighorn sheep, birds, ground squirrels and even bears. This amazing region is also home to many other animals: wolverines, cougars and bison, to name a few. They’re all important parts of a much larger mountain ecosystem called the Yellowstone to Yukon region. Most animals instinctively stay away from humans, but that’s starting to become more of a challenge as places like Banff and Jasper host more and more people — even off the beaten path. The highway that winds you through the Rockies, the hike you plan to conquer and even where you spend the night are home to wildlife. Just as you made the journey here, animals make long journeys to find food, mate and migrate. Wildlife need room to roam! 16

he experience of visiting and playing in the Canadian Rockies is a unique one. That’s why people like you come from all over the world to enjoy what these beautiful, wild landscapes have to offer. Summer is a great time to visit, whether it’s your first or twentieth time. Wildflowers cover the mountain meadows, aquamarine lakes reflect blue skies, and numerous outdoor activities immerse you in nature.

Wildlife Make the Rockies Wild The list of wildlife that can be found in and outside of park boundaries is a long one. They may be deep in the backcountry, or perhaps, just out-of-sight. Bears are iconic to the Rockies. From the rolling foothills to the forestcovered mountains, grizzly and black bears are around. This is good news! The presence of healthy bear populations indicates a healthy community of living creatures, including many plants and animals. To share space with these majestic animals, be sure to carry bear spray and keep your dog on a leash.

"If you're lucky enough to see wildlife on the side of the road, slow down (don't stop) and stay in your vehicle." Elk are more commonly seen around mountain towns. It’s best to keep at least two bus lengths’ distance between you and an elk. With huge, easily recognizable antlers, male elk are quite defensive during August to October, when they’re in mate-finding mode. Similarly, May to July is calving time when mama-elk are ultra-protective of their babies. Another creature that roams the Rockies is the wolverine. It’s unlikely that you’ll see one during your time here, but wolverines are still an important part of the mountain landscape. They are quite the long-distance travelers, occupying territories as big as 1,000 square kilometres (that's like combining 200 Banff-sized towns!) Most importantly, wolverines need secure and undisturbed habitat to move and raise their babies. Species such as these ones not only require space to stay healthy, safe and thriving, they also need their populations to stay connected. The question is, how, as humans, can we make sure we’re helping and not harming those connections?

TOP: TRAVEL ALBERTA // JEFF BARTLETT MIDDLE: KARSTEN HEUER // BOTTOM: KENT NELSON

Wildlife Crossing! Did you know in some parks including Banff and Yoho, wild animals have access to their very own bridges and pathways that help them get across highways safely? Crossings under and over roads are one helpful way that people keep wildlife connected. Plus, they also make driving much safer for people! Species such as bears, elk, deer, cougars and wolves have all been recorded using these crossings. And years of research has shown the fencing you see lining the sides of the highway in the parks helps guide animals to the crossing structures safely. That is why conservation groups and nearby communities are working to get more crossings and fences built outside of parks. Thanks to hidden wildlife cameras and other tools, we know that even if we don’t always see them, wild animals are nearby and relying on these structures to survive and thrive. Continued on p 41... LAW OF THE LAND

WILDERNESS ARTISTRY

EDITOR’S PICK

The Ken Hoehn Gallery (p 29) tells stories of life, love and the wild spaces that surround us. Growing up in northern Canada, artist Ken Hoehn spent his childhood exploring nature and honing his wilderness skills. Now, he spends time in places of incredible beauty as he looks to uncover their secrets. He strives to photograph the concepts of these places, and he captures everything from the plight of the polar bears to the tenderness of motherhood and the passing of life and time. “It’s about the study of nature,” Hoehn explains, “Without that study and without growing up in the woods, I wouldn’t have this portfolio today. It’s not about the photography. Nature comes first.” -KATE BARKER 26

HISTORICAL HIDEOUTS Catharine and Peter Whyte were well known artists who lived and loved the Canadian Rockies. Their artwork expressed the beauty and remoteness of the mountain landscapes around them, and they often focussed on lesser-known areas to bring a unique perspective to the area. Their legacy of art capturing the vast landscapes of the mountains is preserved in the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies (p 27). -KB

You are Protecting Nature Growing up, most of us are taught to be considerate guests when we visit someone’s home. The same goes for a visit to the wild Rockies! Your actions can have a lasting impact — good or bad — on wildlife and their homes, during and after your visit. Coexistence is a term often used in science. It describes how we can occupy the same places as wild animals in a way that causes the least harm. In other words, let’s all be the best neighbours that we can. You are an essential part of the solution to keep the future of the Canadian Rockies and its wildlife healthy, regardless of where you call home. Happy exploring!

RIGHT: NICOLAS DORY PHOTOGRAPHY

About Y2Y Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative is all about connection, collaboration and protecting wild places. That’s why our mission is to connect and protect habitat from Yellowstone to Yukon so that people and nature can thrive. In 1993, a group of scientists, conservationists and engaged community members realized the importance of connected habitats. A wolf's travels showed wildlife move on large scales, inspiring a conservation collaborative covering the Rockies from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to Canada's Yukon Territory: the Yellowstone to Yukon region.

6

things that you can do before, during and after your visit that will make a difference for wildlife

Before... 1.

Make sure you’ve purchased bear spray and have a way to carry it accessibly (not in your bag!). If you’re taking a plane to get here, research places to rent bear spray in the area before your trip.

2.

Look up laws for your destination. For example, national parks don’t allow drones or off-leash dogs.

During... 3.

If you spot local wildlife, give them space. It’s tempting to try and get close for a photo, but that puts you and the animal in danger.

4.

Dispose of trash properly. Around town or by trails, you’ll find trash bins with special latches that keep bears out.

After... 5.

Did you learn something new and cool about the local landscape and its wildlife? Share a story with your friends and family!

6.

Take a moment to reflect on how nature made your trip to the Rockies special. Wherever you’re from, think of ways you can support organizations that are working to protect nature.

TRULY CANADIAN

Bears call Banff home. When we venture off the beaten path, we’re exploring their territory. The best defense against an attack is prevention. Be aware, travel in groups, make noise, stay on trails and respect closures. If you are in a situation, your next best defence is bear spray. Get your bear spray at Home Hardware (p 49) or rent it at Bactrax (p 43). -KB

Come to the mountains and find truly Canadian products and designers. The Gift Shop at the Whyte Museum (p 49) sells art from local artisans. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Kootenay National Park turns 100 this year! The park was officially established on April 21, 1920, when the Canadian government agreed to build a new road through the Canadian Rockies. This road connects the Trans-Canada Highway to the iconic Radium Hot Springs through steep and towering peaks, past deep canyons and over turbulent rivers. With plenty of day hikes, short excursions and backcountry access along this road, it’s an adventurer’s paradise. There’s a surprise around every corner. -KATE BARKER

The Burgess Shale is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the best place to learn about prehistoric wildlife in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It is an important scientific resource that has been the source of many paleontology discoveries. Guided tours that discuss the impressive fossil record will resume in 2021!

Looking for fun? Stay at the Village of Radium Hot Springs! The iconic hot springs pools will reopen when it's safe. In the meantime, get your adrenaline pumping with Valley Zipline Adventures (p 70) or learn about the wilderness surrounding the village with a Segway PT tour from Scootin’ Kootenay Tours. Relax in comfort in a sustainable yurt campground with Radius Retreat.

QUIET BEAUTY

Maligne Lake is a long and narrow body of water nestled amongst jagged peaks. It is the largest naturally formed, glacially fed lake in the Canadian Rockies. Originally named “Lake of Deep Waters” or “Lake of Healing” by First Nations peoples, explorer and surveyor Mary Schäffer is credited with putting the lake on the map. Explore the lake by hiking along its shores, renting a boat, or by taking a Maligne Lake Cruise (p 77). -KB

The Glacier Skywalk (p 78) was constructed to allow visitors to have access to sky-high views of the Sunwapta Valley. The structure was built on land that had already been disturbed by the construction of the highway, in order to have a minimal environmental impact. The metal was left unpainted to match the surrounding cliffs. The design was inspired by the branches of the large Douglas fir trees seen throughout the Canadian Rockies. These branches are cantilevered from the trunk, just like the Skywalk structure is cantilevered from the cliff face with extra support where it joins the rock. -KATE BARKER

OVER LAND The Overlanders were a group of about 150 travellers who journeyed from Ontario to BC in 1862 with the hopes of finding gold. When it was time to cross the Canadian Rockies, they hired Indigenous guides to show them the way. The Overlander Trail (p 74) is a popular trail that this group used during their journey through the Jasper region. -KATE BARKER

GET GOLFING!

The Stanley Thompson Golf Course at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (p 78) is worldrenowned for its spectacular scenery, challenging layout and expert restoration of Stanley Thompson’s original 1924 design. The course is designed to follow the natural contours of the landscape in order to create a partnership with the environment. From the elevated tee boxes to the challenging bunkers and wide faraways that wind through the trees, every element is sculpted to reflect the stunning mountain setting. The Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club is rated by SCOREGolf Magazine as the #1 Best Golf Resort in Canada. -KATE BARKER

HIDDEN HINTON

WALK ON ICE

Located just outside of Jasper National Park’s boundary is the town of Hinton. This town is full of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Take to the skies for a custom helihike with Hiking with Claire (p 82)or explore the trails with horseback adventures from Old Entrance (p 87). Bike on the vast trail networks surrounding the town or get out on an ATV! -KB

During the height of glaciation, the Canadian Rockies were almost completely covered in ice. The mountains we see today were shaped as the ice receded, leaving sharp jagged peaks and U-shaped valleys. Learn about glaciers and their importance in shaping the land with an ACMG-certified guide at Athabasca Glacier Icewalks (p 78) or Rockaboo Mountain Adventures (p 78). Stay at the foot of the Athabasca Glacier at Pursuit’s Glacier View Lodge. -KATE BARKER
