MOUNTAIN STORIES

Donald "Curly" Phillips is a common name in Jasper. He was a famous outfitter and guide in the early 1900s, and he is well known for his carpentry skills. Not only did he build the Maligne Lake Boathouse, which is still standing to this day, but he also built numerous canoes that were sought after and shipped far and wide. There are plenty of trails groomed for cross country skiers within Jasper National Park. Some of our favourites include:

• Whirlpool Cross-Country Ski Hub includes easy, 7 km/4.3 mi return

Moab Lake Trail or the moderate climb to Moab Lake, 15.2 km/9.4 mi return. Leach Lake Trail is a moderate 7 km/4.3 mi return with excellent views. Continue farther for a 15.2 km/9.4 mi return to Athabasca Falls. • Pyramid Bench Plateau has trails near Patricia Lake and Pyramid

Lake. Pyramid Fire Rd is a challenging 16.8 km/10.4 mi trail with views from Pyramid Mountain. • Wabasso Campground has various easy trails and is popular with families.

SNOWSHOE TRAILS

Snowshoeing is an excellent way to experience the beauty of Jasper. Please stay off tracks for skiers.

• Pyramid Bench Various trails including easy, 4.2 km/2.6 mi Edge of the

Bench Trail, with spectacular views of town and the surrounding peaks.

Moderate Pyramid Overlook is a 6 km/3.7 mi loop with phenomenal views of Pyramid Mountain. Try the steep, moderate, 8.6 km/5.3 mi loop to Virl, Dorothy, and Christine Lakes. • Maligne Lake has some of the best snow in the park and it's an excellent place to see wildlife. Try the easy Little Moose Lake Loop, a 2.6 km/1.6 mi forest trail from

Maligne Lake to Moose Lake.

The easy Mary Schaffer Loop is 3.2 km/2 mi. Pass Curly Phillips’ historic boathouse to the viewpoint and return through the trees. • Medicine Lakeshore is an easy 3 km/1.8 mi return with views of Watchtower Canyon. • Beaver Lake is an easy 2.6 km/1.6 mi loop with picturesque and dramatic mountain views.
