Let’s Analyze The Music pt.3 THE LEGENDS EMERGE

Clive Williams, CEO/ Publisher This is the third installment in the series, “Let’s Analyze the Music” in which I have made an effort to give a clearer prospective of the etiology of Reggae music. As I stated before, there are over ten books written on the subject, and as I write, there are more books being written on Reggae music. I believe however, that having seen the evolution with my own eyes and having had personal contact with many of its creators and performers, I can offer a more authentic prospective, that hopefully will inform my readers as to the philosophy of Reggae. So, in my last article I asked the question what is reggae? Or “Ragga,” as it was called in the UK, (“the other hotbed in the development of the music.”) Is reggae a fusion of Mento, Ska or Rocksteady? Or is it a composite of all those musical idioms. I believe reggae stands uniquely on its own as a musical genre because of its original commitment to a cause, a movement and a philosophy. Reggae music emerged from a cauldron, steaming and bubbling over from oppression, inequality and exploitation that existed among Jamaica’s predominantly black population. This cauldron was fired by the black consciousness teachings of Marcus Garvey and the emergence of the Rastafarian Movement in Jamaica. The social and cultural impact of those converging philosophies created awareness, especially, among Jamaica’s disaffected youths who lacked opportunities to climb the social ladder. Many of those uneducated but highly intelligent youths made their protests known through song and dance. In a musical sense,

6 | www.gowhereitzat.com

their lyrics and instrumentation departed from the influence of mento, ska or rocksteady. This music challenged the evils of colonialism and racism and as Bob Marley so eloquently riffed in his hit single - One Drop, “it’s fighting against isms and schisms.” What was yet unknown to the progenitors of this music, is the profound effect it would have, in every corner of the world that was plagued with oppression, racism and enslavement. In Jamaican society, the emergence of “rude boy culture” was the disaffection that young, uneducated and unemployed men felt, betrayed by a system in which they saw great wealth accumulated on the backs of their hard working mothers and fathers. Jamaica was being transformed by a culture and a music that was best articulated by the oppressed. The performers and producers who emerged from that chaos are not the only significant contributors to this genre; however, their star power drove the music to every corner of the earth. Isn’t it ironic that, the most significant cultural figure since Marcus Garvey is Robert Nesta Marley – Rasta Rebel, who delivered his message through reggae music? Marley has since then become one of the most unifying cultural figures in recent history. The antipathy toward his music and culture by many of the upper-class, in the late 60’s and 70’s in Jamaica, is now completely overshadowed by his global acceptance, the success of his brand and the respect for Reggae music as a unifying force throughout the world. The impact that Marley and his music has had on the world is well documented. Not to be outdone, Jimmy Cliff has carried the message music of reggae not only in song but also in film with his performance in the cult classic “The Harder They Come.” These two legendary figures like Atlas, carried reggae music on their shoulders to every corner of the globe from the continents of Africa, Europe, Australia and Asia. These men, along with other incredible musicians, have made reggae the unique genre of music that it is today. As you sit in your ivory towers disputing whether reggae music is dying or is being taken from us or is still relevant, you may be unmindful of its

influence and power throughout the world. Reggae is here to stay. Reggae is firmly planted and established: it’s the legend of a people on a small island fondly called, “The Rock,” possessing a fierce, indomitable spirit matched, paradoxically, enough with the most expansive hospitality and good- humor one could imagine. Reggae is a statement of that spirit; it is a composite of African, Caucasian, Chinese, Syrian, Indian and Jew, and then some. How influential is reggae? Are you ready for this? Reggae’s influence and power exists even in countries where English is hardly spoken. In the war torn countries of Serbia and Croati (existing in what was once known as Yugoslavia), two musicians presented a statue of Bob Marley during a Rock Music festival in Serbia, the inscription on the monument reads, “Bob Marley fighter for freedom armed with guitar.” In New Zealand Marley’s life and music is celebrated on February 6 (his birthday), this is called Waitangi Day, honoring the treaty that was signed between the European settlers and the indigenous Maori population. In Thailand in the city of Koh Lipe Marley’s birthday February 6, is celebrated with a cultural festival for three days. On April 17, 1980 when the former racist regime of Rhodesia was liberated and re-named Zimbabwe, it is said that after the flag raising, the first words that were officially said were, “ladies and gentlemen Bob Marley and the Wailers.” Marley’s 1979 “Survival” album feature a cut aptly named “Zimbabwe,” a tribute to the nation. The African group from Sierra Leone who emerged from Guinean refugee camps as the “Refugee All-Stars” received international acclaim for their 2006 debut “Living a Refugee,” said their inspiration came through Marley. A culture is immortalized by among other things, its music, so whether you see Bob Marley as “sinner or saint” he has immortalized reggae music and has made it a unifying and powerful voice for the “Upliftment of Jah People.” Selah!

FEATURE was the goddess “Mari,” which is very similar to “Mauri,” from which we get the Anglicized version of the word Mauri, which is “Moor.” Sugar was a god of the mountains who possessed the power to bring thunder and lightning down from heaven. The lightning you see in the sky, before a thunder shower is nature’s display of electricity. The electro-white we know as sugar is a natural electrolyte emulator in the sense that it has chemical properties that make us feel as if we are conducting electricity. Depending on the dose, sugar might make someone feel like they’ve been

WHITE LIGHTENING OF THE DRAGON KINGS By Trudy-Ann Ewan In medieval European art it’s very common to see Moorish nobles of West African descent depicted as Dragon Kings. The painting displaying Moorish crests of heraldry is just one of many examples. The illustration of the king flanked by two dragons in the upper left-hand corner of the image above comes out of the town of Freising in Bavaria, Germany circa 1286 C.E. Mind you, this is the same Bavaria that nurtured Adam Weishaupt’s so-called Illuminati nearly 500 years later. Weishaupt was a free-thinker who was influenced by the liberalism that typified Moorish Spain at its cultural zenith. In his book Cult of the Shadow, Typhonian Ordo Templi Orientis founder Kenneth Grant speaks of the West African “Cult of the Black Snake” which he says gave the Western World much of its esoteric tradition by way of the Nile Valley and the Fertile Crescent. Grant states that “some of the most obscure magical languages are yet extent in some of the god names, place names and ancient dialects of Africa. In the West African fetish cults for instance are preserved some of the most primal names of magical power that were carried over and integrated with Egyptian and Chaldean traditions at a much later age” (p.23). Given Southern Europe’s close proximity to the African continent, the region had been subject to a Moorish influence long before the 8th century C.E. Ancient Iberian folklore (the folklore of ancient Spain) speaks of a fire-breathing dragon known as “Sugaar” or “Sugar” which originally meant “fire-breathing male serpent” among the Basque people of Southern Europe. Sugar’s consort

struck by lightning in the best possible way. That is of course until they crash and burn from dehydration, which high sugar consumption will surely bring. The Moorish Dragon Kings introduced crystallized sugar to the Iberian peninsula, as well as the rest of Europe, in the 14th century. Back then sugar was served in small rock chunks called “cracks.” If you’re skeptical about what I’m saying, do your Reading Rainbow routine. You don’t have to take my word for it. Selling cracks to a self-indulgent European aristocracy was a lucrative enterprise for Moors, as sugar was a novel food additive in high demand. One might ask themselves why the highly addictive sweet crack was named after a reptilian god from old Spain? The answer is because it was introduced to the European populace by West African dragon kings who were formerly known as Moors. In retrospect, selling cracks may have contributed somewhat to the fall of the Moorish empire in the 15th century, as they consumed their own supplies. The abundance of sugar, combined with several other vices, probably made the Moors irritable, unfocused, undisciplined, and argumentative to the point where they couldn’t accomplish anything meaningful as a collective group of people. Wise men and women study history and mythology in the present to gain greater insight about their condition in the present. This can help pave the way to a sweeter future for those who actively seize it.

Minding your business

FOUNTAIN PIMENTO OIL MY LIFE’S JOURNEY AS AN ENTREPRENEUR I’m sitting with Sandra Gustard, aka “Layde English”, who proudly recalls her South London roots before her migration to the US following a series of tragic deaths in rapid succession. A journalist in her native London, she worked for popular magazine Black Teens - interviewing Jamaican and Caribbean reggae artists. Her eloquence and writing skills soon led to work as a publicist for singer Hughie Crawford before effortlessly moving into artist management. Her hopes of continuing that work in New York were dashed when she realized how costly and cut throat that business was, but was glad for the opportunity to work with newspaper Titan Rupert Murdoch’s son – James’ Rawkus Records, promoting and publicizing the likes of Talib Kwali and Pharoahe Monch. The arrival of her young daughter from London changed her focus as she tried her hand as a mobile boutique owner, with her unique collection from London. There followed a collaboration with fellow female entrepreneur making handbags and jewelry but this fell prey to exorbitant rents due to Manhattan’s gentrification. Layde English is Fountain Pimento Oil’s biggest advocate. “This product is one of Jamaica’s gifts to the world and I want to expose it to as many people as possible”. Suffering from a painful pinched nerve, she received weekly Cortisone shots but after a mas sage at the Bath, recalled her elation “to this day, I

dents of Bath did not materialize, because of issues with product consistency and a short-sighted and warped business sense.” An Extra Ordinary business woman “I give away more than I sell. Right now, for me, the biggest goal is to expose Fountain Pimento Oil, which transcends any thoughts of making money! The money is a by-product of the gift you give some one”. Her profound statement should be a blue-print

remember it as being one of the most miraculous things that ever happened to me (outside the birth of my children)”. Pimento numbs pain! It’s a wonderful healing product. Learning the ingredients and production methods, she put wheels in motion to sell the product in the US. “That is how I got started with Fountain Pimento Oil. Unfortunately, my original dream of implementing a successful cottage industry for some resi

for businesses all over– “What I’ve learned is that if you go into business just for the money – you don’t make money. I learnt that from my experience with my clothes store. I learnt really fast, you don’t make money just for the sake of wanting to get money. The service you provide for people has to provide some value for them. The money is a by-product of the service you provide.” Fountain Pimento Oil has already been going for five years now and is shipped to a global clientele. The business now pays for itself, but Sandra has visions of eventually selling the company, but not before achieving her goal of seeing her product placed in major Manhattan department stores.

SPRING GARDENS JAMAICAN RESTAURANT

Whenever I travel to Jamaica I look forward with much anticipation, to re-discovering the dishes my mom used to cook. The spicy, aromatic and sweet taste of Jamaican food; ackee and salt fish, brown-stew chicken, oxtail, jerk pork, curried goat, steamed fish, tripe and beans, cow foot and fried sprat are just some of my personal favorites. Each visit, I am sadly disappointed by the fact that, just a few restaurants live up to my expectations. In recent times the food is either too salty, inadequately seasoned or in some cases too sweet because sugar has been added e.g. (I don’t know why) to oxtail and brown-stew chicken. Yes, times have changed in rural Jamaica so I’d go in to Kingston where you can still find the best food in the region although most times I’d end up eating Chinese food. So I bring my hurt and disappointment back to New York, bitching and complaining to everybody I meet about the decline in the quality and preparation of the food in the local restaurants. I must admit, I am a spoiled Jamaican; I eat most of my meals at home and like Oliver Samuels when I eat out, “mi only nyam a’ The Door.” However,

16 | www.gowhereitzat.com

one Friday afternoon the pangs of hunger demanded that I find food and find it fast, so I stopped at a quaint little place relatively close to my office on Springfield Blvd. This is a place I realized I had dropped WhereITZat Magazine numerous times and yet I knew nothing about the food. When I walked in the place was humming with activity, I waited my turn impatiently as “hungry buss mi shut.” Much to my delight and surprise, the service was excellent, the food was authentic, and real Jamaican food. Spicy, aromatic and flavorful so much so, that my wife who is a really good cook, gave them an “A.” I don’t want to presume to tell you where to get your food, but if service is important to you and you are in a hurry and like good, clean and flavorful food, stop at Spring Gardens you will be as surprised and pleased as I was. You can find them at: 135-29 Springfield Blvd., Springfield Garden, Queens NY, and Phone: (718) 341 4480.

NASSAU NEWS Mangano delivers for Nassau County Mangano and Veolia to Upgrade Able-Ride Paratransit Fleet Purchase of 28 New handicap-Accessible Passenger Vans to Replace Able-Ride Fleet’s Oldest Vehicles; Funded with Federal Transportation grants and Veolia contributions Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE Bus) announced today that they will soon begin taking delivery on 28 new handicap-accessible paratransit vans that will replace Able-Ride’s oldest vehicles. The new wheelchair accessible modified dodge vans will offer Able-Ride greater flexibility in how it serves customers, reduce fuel and maintenance costs, and provide a more comfortable ride for passengers. “We are pleased to update the Able-Ride fleet and we’re doing it in a way that will improve the experience for NICE’s paratransit customers,” said County Executive Mangano. “Along with the 45 new fixed route buses added to the NICE fleet recently, we are continuing to update the equipment without placing the cost on taxpayers. We are especially pleased that Veolia Transportation is making investments in the system.” The cost of the 28-vehicle purchase is approximately $1.2 million. Of that, the entire cost of 18 vehicles, approximately $780,000, is being paid for by Veolia at no cost to Nassau County taxpayers. Another 10 vehicles - costing approximately $435,000 - are being funded through state-administered Federal Transportation Administration grants earmarked for capital purchases for mass transit. The first of the vans are expected to be delivered in late October 2013. “NICE is continuously looking for ways to improve our service and reduce our costs. Using a mix of vehicles for Able-Ride is something we have considered for a long time and Veolia’s investment is helping make that possible,” said NICE Chief Executive Officer Mike Setzer. “We think passenger vans, as opposed to the larger truck chassis mini-buses, will serve customers’ needs better in many instances with a noticeably smoother ride.” Rather than replace the older vehicles with the current “mini-bus” style vehicles that now comprise most of the 95-vehicle Abe-Ride fleet, NICE will begin using a mix of vehicles that will help it provide better service and reduce costs. As opposed to the current vehicles, the vans will use regular gasoline and offer improved gas mileage; are able to travel on parkways giving passengers and operators faster and/or shorter options; and are built on a more comfortable car chassis, versus a truck chassis, which has a rougher ride. The new vans can comfortably and safely handle two customers in wheelchairs and two seated customers. While their overall capacity is smaller than the current mini-buses it is sufficient to meet actual demand. The vehicles being replaced are all seven years old.

SAY

WhAT?

gREETINgS dEAR REAdERS, Welcome to Fall. The weather has been so hot and cold we’re all getting sick, so make sure you get your flu shots. I got mine last year and didn’t suffer from one cold or flu; usually I get sick all winter. Anyway, folks, let’s check out what’s going on. First and foremost, my girl Tessanne Chin. Way to go Tessanne! Did you all see her on The Voice, oh my

God, all four coaches turned around for her powerful rendition of Pink’s “Try.” She was amazing! As you all know, Tessanne is from Jamaica and has been in the music business for some time. Her style is considered Reggae Fusion as she is reaching out to a global audience and is best known for her hit singles “Hideaway” and “Messenger”. She has opened for famous acts such as Patti Labelle, Peabo Bryson and Gladys Knight, and some of Reggae’s biggest names, such as Shaggy, and Third World to name a few and toured for 3 years with Jimmy Cliff. At Shaggy’s Album release party at Milk River Café a couple of weeks ago, Tessanne’s The Voice performance was replayed to a packed room of supporters cheering her on. Shaggy had a picture taken and Instagramed it to her to show that we were all routing for her. Big up Tessanne!

Jackson slated for 2014. The movie, which is based on comic books, will cast other big names like Footballer David Beckham, Colin Firth and Michael Caine along with Samuel L. Although both Bolt and Beckham have little acting experience, Jackson noted that fame is more important sometimes now than acting ability is, in a certain way,” the BBC quoted Jackson as saying. It’s not yet clear which role Bolt will play, but with his sense of fun and showmanship, I’m sure he can pull it off and enjoying doing it! Good girl H a n n a h Montana, aka bad girl Miley Cyrus, has been getting a lot of flak after her Twerkin act on the VMA recently. Her latest video “Wrecking Ball” where she is cavorting naked on a wrecking ball has not done much to enhance her image. Some of the fallout from this includes a few “motherly love” letters from rocker Sinead O’Connor berating Miley’s unsavory behavior implying that her nudity video could invite male violence and somehow she is allowing herself to being “pimped and “prostituted.” Miley didn’t take Sinead’s “concerned motherly love messages” too kindly and her tweeted mocking response “Before there was Amanda Bynes” referring to the actress’ mental illness issues, lead to Sinead threatening legal actions if Miley does not issue a full apology to her, Amanda Bynes and people who have suffer from mental illness. Apparently this all started as Sinead was not impress that Cyrus in an interview with “Rolling Stone” commented that her “Wrecking Ball” music video is a modern version of Sinead’s “Nothing Compares 2U” video. That’s when she decided it was time to take the youngster under her wings. I guess Sinead found out little Miley is nothing like the good girl Hannah Montana! At 21 years old, Chronixx (whose real name is Jamar McNaughton) is being billed as Jamaica’s next reggae superstar. Last month he made his New York debut at SOB in New York City then at Pulse 48 in Brooklyn both performances to overwhelming rave reviews. Most recently he was written up in Billboardbiz by influential New York-based music writer, Patricia Meschino, who has covered all major Caribbean music festivals, chronicling Chronixx’s journey to becoming “the next big ting” out of Jamaica. The award-winning journalist notes “Chronixx has emerged as a leading light among an unofficial consortium of young Jamaican Rastafarian acts, branded as a “Reggae Revival.”” Chronixx’s vocal range and well-written songs, along with a talented backup band, Zince Fence Redemption, are all contributing factors for a solid stage performance. According to

Pat, this young man started in the music business as a teenager writing and producing songs for his colleagues and his father which made the transition to recording music much easier. I have yet to see this up and coming artiste, but from all I’ve read, I’m looking forward to being at his next performance! Rapper Lupe Fiasco’s latest video “Bitch Bad” has led to some controversy among critics. The Grammy Award Chicago rapper told MTV News his sole purpose was to start a social dialogue, which clearly he has achieved. While some critics disapprove of the message about rap and misogyny that Lupe has parodied in the video as “reckless social commentary” and “muddled so-called conscious hip hop” even going as far as to suggest some of this commentary is aimed at 50 Cent as seen in the fake rap video in the video. On the other hand, others have lauded the conscious lyrics rapper for using words as a powerful tool for getting the message across on the effect that stereotypical videos that glorify bling, shiny cars, seminaked females and name calling like Bitch and Hoe has when interpreted by our children. As Rap Genius wrote in the Huff Post “songs like this are fascinating moments of artists talking back not only to their audience, but to the record industry and the culture as a whole, and rebelling, in the best way they know how, against the pressures to keep their art as simple and universally accessible as possible. In addition to being on-point and funny in the way that only parody from an insider can be, they show a glimpse of how artists see the world that they live in and the trends they spend their lives and livelihoods negotiating with.” I think it’s a conversation worth having no matter how it is portrayed! So friends, until next time when I dish you more dirt, walk good! Lady Un Da Cover

Produced by Major Lazer and Jerry Wonda Reggae Star is Currently Touring the United States Gyptian is revving up for his upcoming studio album Sex, Love and Reggae (October 29, VP Records) and reveals his “colorful” title track today via Pitchfork. The Major Lazer and Jerry Wonda produced single “Sex, Love and Reggae” features guest vocals from Angela Hunte (co-writer for Jay Z’s Grammy-winning “Empire State of Mind”) and Trinidadian soca king Bunji Garlin. In support of Sex, Love and Reggae, the reggae star is currently touring the United States. He will be performing in the Southeast, Northeast and West Coast regions until early November. See remaining tour dates below. Gyptian’s Sex, Love and Reggae is a marked departure from the MOBO and Soul Train award-winning Jamaican singer’s previous releases and unveils another layer of his artistry. The musically diverse set - that takes the listener from dancehall to soca to global pop and R&B sounds - follows his 2010 critically-acclaimed album Hold You and its RIAA certified Gold title track. The 17-track set is co-executive produced by Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis, who is known for cranking out hits for superstars such as Miguel, Mary J. Blige, Lupe Fiasco, the Fugees and many more. The album also features guest appearances from R&B divas Estelle, Melanie Fiona and soca sensation Kes the Band. Just as the title would imply, Sex, Love and Reggae is a spicy and sweet mixture of hits. He displays his playful side with wine-inducing anthems like “Non Stop” and “Wine Slow” (which already received over 7.5 million YouTube views for the lyrics video alone) 34 | www.gowhereitzat.com

classic “My Number One.” He even delves outside of the genre and reimagines Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” which was part of Chevrolet and MTV Iggy’s “Cover The World” campaign. Bringing a much-needed dose of reggae back to the airwaves, the album’s lead single “Vixen” is currently picking up steam on radio stations across the U.S. and U.K. and will drop a new video directed by Jamaica’s talented Ras Kassa (of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s “Welcome To Jamrock” fame). The sultry anthem is co-written by and features Angela Hunte. “It’s all about being versatile,” Gyptian says of the album, and his perspective on music overall. “For me, there’s no boundaries in music. Pick one—there is a Gyptian song in that category for you.” www.twitter.com/realgyptian www.facebook.com/OneGyptian

MANGANO POLICY OF FREEZING PROPERTY TAXES RESULTS IN CONTINUED STRONG SALES TAX GROWTH AND JOB CREATION Nassau’s Quarterly Sales Tax Return Grows by 17% Mineola, NY - A result of Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano’s policy of freezing property taxes for four straight years, budget officials today received Nassau’s quarterly sales tax return which grew by 17%, bringing the year-to-date growth in sales tax receipts to over 9% or $68 million above that of 2012. This significant increase in sales tax receipts, along with Nassau County for the first time in five years having an unemployment rate under 6% (Nassau’s unemployment rate is 5.9%), is the result of County Executive Mangano’s policy of freezing property taxes for four straight years. County Executive Mangano stated, “My administration knows that high taxes kill jobs and hurt the local economy. That is why I repealed the Home Energy Tax and froze property taxes for the past four years. My policies of freezing taxes have sent a clear and loud message to employers that Nassau is open for business. These strong sales tax returns, along with the return of thousands of jobs
