In Flight, on stage February 20 to March 1, Pacific Opera Victoria presents the Canadian première of a 20th century opera inspired by the true story of a refugee who lived in an airport for 18 years. Surprisingly playful, sometimes risqué and often soaring into sheer poetry, Flight launched Jonathan Dove as one of today’s most acclaimed composers.

Family favourites Some of our most cherished stories of childhood come to the stage this winter, courtesy of Victoria’s Kaleidoscope Theatre! The season opens November 2 and 3 with Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery, before the holiday season brings Charlotte’s Web: The Musical December 28 and 29. Down on the Zuckerman Farm, Wilbur, an irresistible young pig is determined to avoid the butcher, and with the help of his friends (especially the magnificent spider, Charlotte) Wilbur is not only safe, but learns that true friends live in our hearts forever. From February 22 and 23, Kaleidoscope brings The House at Pooh Corner to the McPherson Playhouse stage, where the Hundred Acre Wood adventures of our familiar friends are bound only by their imaginations. From Four Season Musical Theatre comes the magical Matilda the Musical, November 14 to 16, 22 and 23 at the Ridge Theatre. Telling the story of Matilda Wormwood, a child with an incredible talent for learning, this Tony-award winning musical adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl tale is a firm favourite and a delight for anybody who has ever felt the thrill of rebellion. In The Flight of the Hummingbird, March 19 to 22, Pacific Opera Victoria presents an opera for the whole family, where the animals of the forest are inspired to come together by Dukdukdiya, the Hummingbird, to save their beautiful home from a raging fire. Based on an indigenous parable from the Quechuan people of South America, the story of the brave hummingbird travelled through pre-contact trade routes to become well known within Haida culture. This opera is influenced by the graphic novel written by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and will include elements of his dramatic Haida-manga illustrations.

CELEBRATING A Ballet Victoria’s The Gift

From dynamic dance performances to eclectic and engaging theatre productions, fall and winter bring the height of Victoria’s cultural season – and with it, so much to hear and see! At the heart of the this cultural capital is the Victoria Symphony, whose busy lineup of performances ranges from classical heavyweights like Bach and Beethoven to engaging youth-oriented performances. Highlights this winter include performances featuring the work of Frank Sinatra, in addition to “Shaken, Not Stirred” – music from James Bond and other spies – and in March, Music of the Emerald Isles, with Julliard-trained Riverdance alumni Maria Millar.

The symphony’s musicians also perform with many of the city’s resident and visiting dancers, including collaborations with Ballet Victoria. Following the season-opening Ballet Rocks, audiences will enjoy artistic director Paul Destrooper’s one-act interpretation of The Little Prince, before the The Gift takes the stage December 27 to 29 with a reimagining of the classic Nutcracker. The company’s full-length two-act Romeo & Juliet, with full orchestra performing Prokofiev’s beautiful score, concludes the season May 23 and 24. Other dance highlights include Nutcracker, from the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers and the Victoria Symphony November 29 to December 1, and Reviser, See Kidd Pivot’s Revisor, a hybrid of contemporary theatre and dance, February 7 and 8. Here, choreographers Jonathon Young and Crystal Pite revise an archetypal comic plot to serve as the basis for choreography in this hybrid of contemporary theatre and dance, where nine dancers embody the recorded dialogue of some of Canada’s finest actors, exploring conflict, comedy and corruption in the potent relationship between language and the body. From Pacific Opera Victoria comes a Canadian première – Flight – an off-the-wall mix of profundity and high-flying hijinks, February 20 to March 1 at the Royal Theatre. Inspired by the true story of a refugee who lived in an airport for 18 years, Flight is one of the most popular of contemporary operas. The timeless Carmen follows for POV April 16 to April 26. Bewitching, wilful, earthy, Carmen is a woman who dictates her own terms, whatever the cost. Instantly recognizable and utterly unforgettable, Carmen brims with audacious harmonies and irresistible melodies that have earned their place in popular culture. Music also takes centre stage in one of the most anticipated events of the season: Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, January 31 to February 2. The hit show tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation!

The Belfry Theatre continues its 2019-20 season with Kat Sandler’s Bang Bang, on stage through November 24. Asking the question, “Who gets to tell your story?” this is “a super-funny sitcom-style comedy – allowing us to laugh at serious issues and timely themes.” Every Brilliant Thing, by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, follows December 3 to 22, a heartrending yet hopeful play about the lengths we go to for those we love. From February 4 to March 1 , the Belfry stages Tara Beagan’s The Ministry of Grace, a grand, sweeping story of friendship and redemption, and if you’re visiting in March, be sure to take in the Belfry’s annual Spark Festival, featuring four productions, plus workshops and a host of free events! From Langham Court Theatre, the longest running community theatre in Western Canada, comes an excellent lineup, including Patrick Hamilton’s Rope November 6 to 23: Two university students who believe they’re intellectually superior intend to prove it by committing a murder and then throwing a macabre dinner party. Come the New Year, the company explores the value of relationships in modern society with Company, based on the book by George Furth, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
