FALL

for Victoria
While summer earns easy accolades, many locals will tell you that fall is a seasonal highlight. And why not? Skies are blue, temperatures warm and trails and golf courses dry, and without the crowds seen from June to early September. In late October and November, nature lovers and families will want to visit Goldstream Provincial Park, about 25 minutes from downtown, at the foot of the Malahat Drive. Goldstream is home to the annual salmon run, as the fish conclude their epic journey by making their way upstream to spawn. A nature house is on-site for those wanting to learn more about this annual spectacle.
For early fall colour, a stroll among the gardens Government House, in the Rockland neighbourhood is a delight, while along the Gorge Waterway, the Japanese Garden at Esquimalt Gorge Park will delight gardeners. The spot was home to North America’s first Japanese Garden more than a century ago, and while much of that was lost following the Second World War, the Township of Esquimalt is working to recreate the garden. During the fall harvest, a cycle along the Lochside Trail or drive along quiet country roads in the Saanich Peninsula showcases fields of corn, cheery orange pumpkins and other earthy delights. Come explore!
Entertaining ideas Canadian comedy icon Brent Butt returns for four performances October 17 and 18 at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, with each performance limited to 50 people. Choose from an afternoon or evening performance. Born in the small farming town of Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Butt delights fans both with his standup comedy, and TV and film projects, including the award-winning Corner Gas and Hiccups. Brent Butt

IN THE GARDEN CITY

If you’re visiting Victoria between late winter and early spring, be sure to look up ... to the blossom trees lining city streets. Flowering cherries and plums offer welcoming sneak peeks of the sunny season to come.
In Saanich, Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary is a favourite both for the spring-flowering wildflowers and for birdwatching. A loop trail circles this protected area, letting you easily view the diverse species and wild spaces.
Mill Hill Regional Park, about 20 minutes west of Victoria, lets visitors discover a wide variety of environments: meandering trails past a Douglas fir forest, a Garry oak ecosystem with spring wildflowers and a rocky hilltop affording panoramic views overlooking Esquimalt Harbour and Victoria.
While many downtown Victoria streets are planted, depending on the time of year, good places to view the spectacle include Fairfield and James Bay.

Take a fresh look at one of Canada’s most iconic artists, when the Royal BC Museum welcomes its newest travelling exhibition. Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast completes its recent cross-Canada tour at the provincial museum Oct. 22 to Jan. 24. Visitors will also see the exclusive addition of T’anuu – the signature painting from the museum’s permanent collection. This illuminating feature exhibition organized by the Audain Art Museum in Whistler, BC, captures the moment Carr revolutionized her painting style – and Canadian modernism – after returning in 1911 from an extended trip to France.

Lou-ann Neel, Acting Head of Indigenous Collections and Repatriation, notes that seeing the exhibit at the museum presents a unique opportunity.
Fresh Seeing includes 67 artworks by Carr and her compatriots in France, which chart Carr’s transformation into an artist of the Canadian avantgarde. A micro-exhibition curated from the Royal BC Museum’s own collections runs concurrently nearby: Everyday Emily Carr features 22 smaller artworks ranging from sketches to small watercolours, as well as postcards, travel expense lists and one of Carr’s hooked rugs. These personal artifacts and archival records offer visitors a deeper look at Carr as a person, as well as an artist.
“After seeing Carr’s paintings, visitors can head upstairs to the First Peoples Gallery to experience first-hand the Indigenous art that inspired her
As part of ongoing COVID-19 protocols, all visitors require timed tickets, available in advance online at royalbcmuseum.bc.ca.
“The Royal BC Museum proudly stewards the world’s largest collection of Emily Carr art and archival materials,” says Royal BC Museum CEO Prof. Jack Lohman. “We are delighted to be able to augment this remarkable exhibition with the addition of T’anuu – a vivid example of Haida Gwaii artistry captured by Carr in her newly expanded painting style.”

NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Market Square is the “heart” of Old Town and features a collection of shops and restaurants in restored heritage buildings. Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada. The Gate of Harmonious Interest is a landmark constructed to recognize Chinese immigrants’ participation in establishing the City of Victoria.
