lthough Miami is practically synonymous with bling, in recent years it’s also become just as renowned for its potent potables. For consistently top-ranked cocktails, look no further than the Broken Shaker (www.freehand hotels.com), located adjacent to Miami Beach’s Freehand hotel. What started out as a pop-up bar proved such a hit that it’s now a permanent establishment and favorite haunt of locals. Considering all the raves it’s won—a James Beard Award nomination and Tales of the Cocktail prize, to name just a few—the bar is refreshingly laid back, with a poolside courtyard and a seasonal menu of drinks that dare to blend such ingredients as Chinese five spice, potato, lemongrass and rum. As a point of pride, many of the bar’s ingredients are plucked straight from the on-site garden. For a little of that notorious Miami glitz, Brickell’s three-story Komodo (www.komodomiami.com) offers an array of dining and drinking options inside and out. A collaboration between restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow and nightclub owner David Grutman, the Asian-inspired venue
sports a vibe that’s at once glam and low-key, owing to a multitude of seating options. The cavernous main dining room is the choice for those who wish to see and be seen, while the patio’s floating “bird’s-nest” chairs impart a treehouse-like ambiance. Awash with pop-art décor, the third-floor Komodo Lounge often hosts well-known and up-and-coming artists and DJs. For a taste of the good life without the pricey bar tab, drop in during the weekday happy hour for discounted appetizers and drinks. Over in the Design District, Miami star chef Brad Kilgore recently unveiled Kaido (www.kaidomi ami.com), a cocktail lounge that has made a name for itself by way of its Asian-influenced renditions of traditional dishes, such as uni fondue and corn elote with Japanese togorashi and miso powder. But it’s the speakeasy-style Ama, so hidden within the establishment that you won’t find it without a guide, that has garnered the most buzz. Amid the sparkling floors and pearl-diver décor of the “Japanese-style drinking den,” guests sip on rare Japanese whiskeys and cocktails and take turns playing the vintage pachinko machines.

ENJOY THE SHOW Gramps While the entertainment changes nightly at Gramps (www.gramps .com), one aspect remains the same: the kitsch. Quirky by even Wynwood standards, the tiki-cum-dive-bar keeps the neighborhood’s bohemian spirit alive with a calendar as eclectic as its clientele and classic cocktails that pack a punch. Events range from live music and stand-up comedy to trivia, bingo and monthly Nerd Nites described as “like the Discovery Channel… with beer.” And, this being Florida, you might even catch a gator show. Ball & Chain You can’t say you’ve truly experienced Miami until you’ve been to Calle Ocho, the main drag in Little Havana and home to Ball & Chain (www .ballandchainmiami.com), one of the city’s oldest and most historic music venues, boasting a whopping 100 hours of live music weekly. Back in its heyday, the now-venerable institution hosted such luminaries as Billie Holiday and Count Basie, and continues its jazz tradition today with a nonstop roster that kicks off daily at 11 am on both the indoor and outdoor stages. As you knock back one of the house’s famed mojitos or Calle Ocho Old Fashioneds, you might just spot a local music legend, Grammy nominee or jazz-loving celeb.

Downtown Miami is the place to be during the summertime, and the abundance of cuisine options provides outdoor seating to enjoy your meal in the sun. Hibachi Noodle Bar has a variety of entrées at reasonable price points or if you’re in the mood for Peruvian food, CVI.CHE 105’s flavorful dishes will not disappoint.
The Bayside Marketplace provides waterfront shopping with a wide variety of shops and dining options in a picturesque setting. Cross the Miami River for more shopping centers such as Brickell City Centre, anchored by a 107,000-square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue.
For relaxation and a drink head to The Corner for bar fare and creative drinks during happy hour, or the speakeasy Floyd for Prohibition-era cocktails. For a pick-me-up, ALL DAY’s specialty coffee shop next door will give you the boost you need.
