LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN TRAVELERS KNOW WHERE ™

elcome to the fi rst issue of WhereTraveler magazine, which has been in the making for 83 years. Where magazine, our flagship publication, has been the traveler’s friend since it was first published in 1936. It’s been a great ride but, as with any voyage, one can’t stay in the same place. With the May 2019 issue, we embark on an exciting new adventure as Where takes on a new look and a new name. Like its predecessor, WhereTraveler magazine continues our tradition of offering the best insider information about the local market but with a dynamic new design that speaks to today’s traveler. Even the most experienced traveler knows that having a local friend with inside knowledge of a destination makes a trip all the more special, someone who not only knows the essential, not-tobe-missed sights but also the city’s hidden treasures. For millions of travelers each year, that friend is WhereTraveler magazine, providing valuable advice through print and digital products that cover more than 100 cities, making WhereTraveler the world’s premier travel brand. The new look is sleek and modern, as represented by the new logo, and the compact size makes the magazine conveniently portable. Inside is the same great content we have always provided but in a more concise model, packed with useful information in a fun and visually dramatic format. We show you the best places to shop and dine, the landmarks and attractions not to be missed. We guide you to experiences that will help you make the most of your visit. Our redesigned

Guide section now includes up to 50 percent more listings. Once you have explored the city you are in, WhereTraveler will help you prepare for your next trip. See our new Where Next page, featuring photos from markets around the nation where you will also find WhereTraveler magazine. Then visit our website, wheretraveler. com, which offers travel information on 100 destinations around the world. I hope you enjoy this debut issue of WhereTraveler magazine and that you will look for it at your next destination.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HOLLYWOOD? A: I love the Hollywood

Beach Broadwalk. The vibe of locals and visitors alike enjoying the beach, casual dining and live entertainment. Nothing says welcome to Florida like bike riders, beach goers and tiki bars. Q: WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS FOR THE QUINTESSENTIAL FORT LAUDERDALE SELFIE? A: Downtown Hollywood

features what is called “Downtown Hollywood Mural Project.” It happens every third Saturday of the month. No better selfie spot than the heart of the local graffiti art scene. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE “LIVE LIKE A LOCAL” SECRET YOU SHARE WITH YOUR GUEST? A: Jimbo’s Sand Bar is

located in the north end of Hollywood Beach. An alfresco dockside bar seems a bit “rough around the edges” but it’s actually a lot of fun, (has) reasonably priced good food and beautiful intracoastal views.

lthough Miami is practically synonymous with bling, in recent years it’s also become just as renowned for its potent potables. For consistently top-ranked cocktails, look no further than the Broken Shaker (www.freehand hotels.com), located adjacent to Miami Beach’s Freehand hotel. What started out as a pop-up bar proved such a hit that it’s now a permanent establishment and favorite haunt of locals. Considering all the raves it’s won—a James Beard Award nomination and Tales of the Cocktail prize, to name just a few—the bar is refreshingly laid back, with a poolside courtyard and a seasonal menu of drinks that dare to blend such ingredients as Chinese five spice, potato, lemongrass and rum. As a point of pride, many of the bar’s ingredients are plucked straight from the on-site garden. For a little of that notorious Miami glitz, Brickell’s three-story Komodo (www.komodomiami.com) offers an array of dining and drinking options inside and out. A collaboration between restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow and nightclub owner David Grutman, the Asian-inspired venue

sports a vibe that’s at once glam and low-key, owing to a multitude of seating options. The cavernous main dining room is the choice for those who wish to see and be seen, while the patio’s floating “bird’s-nest” chairs impart a treehouse-like ambiance. Awash with pop-art décor, the third-floor Komodo Lounge often hosts well-known and up-and-coming artists and DJs. For a taste of the good life without the pricey bar tab, drop in during the weekday happy hour for discounted appetizers and drinks. Over in the Design District, Miami star chef Brad Kilgore recently unveiled Kaido (www.kaidomi ami.com), a cocktail lounge that has made a name for itself by way of its Asian-influenced renditions of traditional dishes, such as uni fondue and corn elote with Japanese togorashi and miso powder. But it’s the speakeasy-style Ama, so hidden within the establishment that you won’t find it without a guide, that has garnered the most buzz. Amid the sparkling floors and pearl-diver décor of the “Japanese-style drinking den,” guests sip on rare Japanese whiskeys and cocktails and take turns playing the vintage pachinko machines.

BALL & CHAIN

ENJOY THE SHOW Gramps While the entertainment changes nightly at Gramps (www.gramps .com), one aspect remains the same: the kitsch. Quirky by even Wynwood standards, the tiki-cum-dive-bar keeps the neighborhood’s bohemian spirit alive with a calendar as eclectic as its clientele and classic cocktails that pack a punch. Events range from live music and stand-up comedy to trivia, bingo and monthly Nerd Nites described as “like the Discovery Channel… with beer.” And, this being Florida, you might even catch a gator show. Ball & Chain You can’t say you’ve truly experienced Miami until you’ve been to Calle Ocho, the main drag in Little Havana and home to Ball & Chain (www .ballandchainmiami.com), one of the city’s oldest and most historic music venues, boasting a whopping 100 hours of live music weekly. Back in its heyday, the now-venerable institution hosted such luminaries as Billie Holiday and Count Basie, and continues its jazz tradition today with a nonstop roster that kicks off daily at 11 am on both the indoor and outdoor stages. As you knock back one of the house’s famed mojitos or Calle Ocho Old Fashioneds, you might just spot a local music legend, Grammy nominee or jazz-loving celeb.

While your pet probably shouldn’t indulge, feel free to take him or her with you to La Placita (www .pubbellyglobal.com). The local favorite has a huge patio for furry friends to enjoy outdoor seating with their owners. Over at Wynwood’s famous Asian food hall 1-800-LUCKY (www.1800lucky.com) they take dog-friendly dining to a

new level with a new event series called Tito’s and Tails, in partnership with local dog retreat FreeDOGm and Tito’s Vodka. On the first Tuesday of every month (7-9 pm), enjoy deals on Tito’s drinks, doggy treats, freebies and games and live music by Cuban folklore band Cortadito. Out in Coconut Grove, Leading Hotels of the World’s brand new Mr. C, Coconut Grove (www.mrc coconutgrove.com) allows your pup to stay for $45 a day and pampers them with dog beds, dog bowls on mats and a customized dog menu. Downtown Miami is the place to be during the summertime, and the abundance of cuisine options provides outdoor seating to enjoy your meal in the sun. Hibachi Noodle Bar has a variety of entrées at reasonable price points or if you’re in the mood for Peruvian food, CVI.CHE 105’s flavorful dishes will not disappoint.

The Bayside Marketplace provides waterfront shopping with a wide variety of shops and dining options in a picturesque setting. Cross the Miami River for more shopping centers such as Brickell City Centre, anchored by a 107,000-square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue.

For relaxation and a drink head to The Corner for bar fare and creative drinks during happy hour, or the speakeasy Floyd for Prohibition-era cocktails. For a pick-me-up, ALL DAY’s specialty coffee shop next door will give you the boost you need.

Downtown has plenty of museums to explore and performance arts to enjoy. Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science has a number of exhibits and an aquarium, while the Adrienne Arsht Center houses a performance arts complex.
