elcome to summer in San Francisco! The location and crazy weather patterns here make September feel like the warmest month in our fair city. Along with the pleasant temperature, the city is host to some of the region’s best events of the year. Those include the opening of both the Symphony and Opera seasons as well as outdoor movie and live theater performances. We are also excited to share that our beloved Warriors are moving into their brand-new home this month. As the center of the Warriors’ universe, the Chase Center is a waterfront playground booming with a plethora of activities for the whole family. It is definitely worth a visit, regardless if the Dubs are in town or not. September is the perfect month to enjoy a meal al fresco, so make sure to read Laurie Jo Miller Farr’s feature about the top restaurant patios in the city. Join us on a stroll along Hyde Street from the historic Hyde Street Pier all the way up to the most crooked street in the world with a few stops for wine, ice cream, and seafood. Tag your photo #wheretraveler for a chance to have your photo published across all our WhereTraveler magazines.

EXPERT TIP: Take a day trip to Napa and Sonoma.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THIS TIME OF YEAR?? A: Urban hikes, explore
Land’s End and the Golden Gate Park. The park is San Francisco’s playground, garden, picnic heaven and home to world-class museums. Take a Ferry to Angel Island and enjoy the SF views and history of the Ellis Island of the West Coast. Q: WHERE DO YOU RECOMMEND YOUR GUEST TO GO FOR A GREAT BOTTLE OF WINE? A: After completing my
second Sommelier Level with Court of Master Sommeliers Americas, I learned where to get the perfect bottles of wine for every occasion and palate.
DAVID PEREA
Take a Ferry to Angel Island and enjoy the history of the Ellis Island of the West Coast.
CONCIERGE, GRAND HYATT UNION SQUARE SAN FRANCISCO
For unique bottles of California wine, the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant. For old-world Flat Iron Wines has a knowledgeable staff. For hip and unique wine lounges: Press Club, Amelie and Maritime.
Q: CAN YOU RECOMMEND A PERFECT DAY TRIP? A: For a sophisticated
day trip, Napa and Sonoma are worldrenowned wine destinations, but they have also become a
destination for great breweries, haute cuisine and cannabis tours. Napa and Sonoma are also family-friendly and visitors can enjoy tastings of culinary favorites like wine, cheese, olive oil and chocolate. Q: ANY NEW FAVORITE RESTAURANTS OR HOT SPOTS? A: Some of my current
favorites include: Kaiyo (Peruvian-Japanese), Isla Vida (Caribbean), Flores (Mexican), Angler (California Seafood), Verjus (California French), Charmaine’s (California lounge with views), In Situ (MoMA’s artistic collection of dishes from internationally awarded Chef ’s).
Just north of San Francisco, discover something WILD...

or much of the year, savvy San Franciscans never leave home without their trusty layers of jackets and sweaters, peeling them off—and back on again for evening—as the sun and fog play tag across the City by the Bay. However, September brings frequent sunny stretches of delightfully comfortable days and fogless nights. Those in the know head for these outdoor patios for food and drinks al fresco. Do dinner and a movie simultaneously. Fairy lights are strung across the spacious outdoor courtyard where meals are accompanied by a film. “Mr. Moto in Danger Island” is September’s feature through 9/16; then “Raising Arizona” through the month’s end.
In a landmark building four blocks from Union Square, a horticultural hideaway attracts hummingbirds and hungry visitors alike. Depending on the daily opening hours, Patio Bar at Jones serves Sunday brunch, lunch, dinner and/or drinks. Happy hours, too.

Adjacent to the historic Officers’ Club in the leafy Presidio, Arguello’s Mexican menu—and eight varieties of margaritas—are a salute to this former military outpost. Start with chips, salsa and guacamole on the patio where fire pits are lit if a chill creeps into the park.
Above the design-forward Proper Hotel, Charmaine’s has long views down Market Street from its trendy rooftop patio. There’s an indoor DJ and outdoor fire pits surrounded by chic lounge seating in black and white to accompany a classic cocktail menu.

EVERDENE
Find patio perfection in this Peruvian outpost perched right on San Francisco bay. Along the Embarcadero just steps from the Ferry Building, La Mar is a pisco heaven with spectacular views. Plus, you’ve probably never had better cebiches, tiraditos and nigiris.
At this 12th floor rooftop bar atop the Virgin Hotel, the ceiling is the sky and the wraparound views are a magnet. A new addition to the SoMa scene, Everdene is popular for groups of up to eight who can sip together from a shareable one liter garden party cocktail.

ROOFTOP 25
Take the Hotel Zelos elevator to the fifth floor, where—surprise!—an outdoor terrace off the main bar and restaurant feels like a secret patio. Heated year-round, there are seats beside a water feature and couches by a long fire pit. Known for small bites and killer cocktails.
Walk down an alleyway near the ballpark and upstairs above 25 Lusk, a restaurant crafted from a century-old brick warehouse. There’s an oakwood fired oven for pizza and hot dogs served in a pretzel bun with beer and cheese onions. It’s casual; order and pay at the bar.
