ou chose a great month to visit San Francisco. The next few weeks are action-packed, and there’s no shortage of awesome activities to fi ll your days and nights. Make sure to read the calendar of listing where you’ll find details about the Grand National Rodeo, the 42nd Mill Valley Film Festival and our beloved Fleet Week. To truly experience the air show, grab a seat on a Blue & Gold Fleet boat, which is celebrating their 40th anniversary. What’s not listed is Halloween, because there’s too much going on that day! San Franciscans love Halloween, make sure to stroll down Chestnut Street, Union Street, or Fillmore Street, where the shops hand out candy to trickor-treaters during the day. Stop by the California Wine Merchants on Chestnut Street, where my daughter and I will be handing out candy at the annual Aubrey and Sonya’s Halloween stand. Come get your free trick-or-treat bag and say “Hello” to us! It is all about art in our feature. Emma Krasov shares with you some fabulous places to see free art along with a few incredible exhibitions that are in town, including Mr. Brainwash.

Even transportation devices in the City by the Bay are far from being mundane and boring! Walk into a futuristically-looking gigantic Salesforce Transit Center and be amazed at the Grand Hall’s 23,000 sq. ft. terrazzo floor, turned into The Secret Garden by local artist Julie Chang. Zinc and bronze images of California poppies, butterflies, and hummingbirds pop up in her vibrant design. At dusk, marvel at the The Bay Lights by Leo Villareal.
Just walking our city’s pedestrian-friendly streets in balmy October weather will yield multiple displays of public art, like a brightly-colored sculpture of three dancing figures by the most important Pop artist of the 1980th Keith Haring outside of the Moscone Center on the corner of Third Street and Howard Street, or a threesome of scary-funny Moonrise Sculptures by Ugo Rondinone at 555 Mission Street.

At the atrium of the de Young museum, Matt Mullican: Between Sign and Subject is showcasing a wide selection of artist’s works from the 1980s through the present. Flags, bulletin boards, light boxes, and a wall of rubbings invite you to explore a universe of symbols and pictograms that chart Mullican’s experience of being in the world. In front of the Legion of Honor, Rodin’s The Thinker continues to inspire creators since its installation in 1904.
A soaring blue steel geometric superstructure designed by Daniel Libeskind is shaped as Hebrew letters spelling “life.” The new CJM’s building is fused with 1881 red brick power station. On view in the lobby is Sacramento-based artist Dave Lane’s 90-foot-long sculpture, Lamp of the Covenant. A six-ton steel oval is suspended overhead with multiple antique objects attached: world globes, light bulbs, and vintage tools, suggesting the unfolding cosmic happenings.
