READY, SET, GO The 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix (Sep 19-21) might just be the most exciting time for visitors to this island. This is the night race’s seventh year running, and each year just keeps getting more and more exciting, with huge stars—racers, performers and other celebrities—gracing the event. But the fun is not just for motorheads. With restaurants, nightspots, shopping malls and even art galleries trying to cash in on the influx of visitors and city-wide party atmosphere, there’s so much going on around the city during this period. We’ll tell you about all the great sights to see around the track, the most exciting art shows and performances to catch around town, the restaurants offering the best views (and food), the coolest parties to attend—and even where to channel your inner Fernando Alonso. Buckle up!

ith just five races till the end of the season, the 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix is one of the most exciting chapters of this season’s F1 calendar. Those familiar with the auto-racing giant already know what makes the Singapore leg such a high point: it’s the first ever F1 night race in the world, and, up until 2013, it was the only one (Bahrain switched theirs to a night race earlier this year). Singapore’s Marina Bay Street Circuit is also one of only four street circuits in the world. Not only that, it’s right in the city center, which makes for some very challenging twists and turns—and a particularly intense spectator experience. All this is made possible and safe by Singapore’s advanced technology and faultless engineering, of course. Though the Grand Prix is undoubtedly the star of the show, there are other races for fans to catch, too. There’s the penultimate race for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia championship, where you can check out local and regional racers outdo each other on the new Porsche 9111 GT3 Cup race cars. Plus, visitors can catch the Masters Historic Formula One cars—a selection of F1 cars from the 1970s and 1980s, complete with

ANDERSON BRIDGE This truss bridge was built in 1910 and named after Sir John Anderson, Governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner for the Federated Malayan States. Much like it did a century ago, when it was built to ease the pressure on the adjacent, narrower Cavenagh Bridge, it still connects the financial district to City Hall. THE FULLERTON HOTEL Now an elegant 5-star hotel, The Fullerton is named after Robert Fullerton, the first Governor of the Straits Settlements. It sits on the site of the former Fort Fullerton and the mysterious Singapore Stone that was destroyed in 1843. Once home to the General Post Office, it reopened as a hotel in 2001. THE PADANG

Originally called Raffles Plain, the Padang became a center for sport and recreation with the founding of the Singapore Cricket Club in 1870 and the Singapore Recreation Club later, in 1883. Singapore’s National Day Parade has been held at the Padang many times, and the Parade returned there in 2010. It continues to stay true to its essence, with cricket, rugby and football still played on its hallowed grounds. CIVILIAN WAR MEMORIAL

RAFFLES’ LANDING SITE Modern-day Singapore’s founder Sir Stamford Raffles is believed to have landed, on January 29 1819, on the northern bank of the Singapore River. The site is sandwiched between the Old Parliament House and the handsome Asian Civilisations Museum, and a polymarble statue of the founding father stands on this site today.

The Civilian War Memorial was built in 1967 in memoriam of the civilians killed during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945. Human remains exhumed from mass graves throughout the island in the 1960s were reburied under the four soaring columns. It is known colloquially among locals as “The Chopsticks” because of its shape.
