ou’ve chosen a terrific time to visit the Tampa Bay area. I’ll let you in on a little secret: the months of November through March are the reason we all live here. Our beautiful sunshine is still abundant, but with more comfortable temperatures, it’s the perfect time to enjoy all our area has to offer, from water sports and beach strolls to outdoor markets and festivals. You’ll find a myriad of options. Looking for some advice on how to live like a local? Read on to discover some thrilling pastimes in our Ask the Expert column (p. 6). In this issue, we also share events happening over the next few months in our Calendar (p. 12). With plays, races, festivals and more, there’s always something exciting happening here. If you happen to be in town during the run-up to the holiday season, you may have shopping to do. Find some great boutiques (and eats!) in the Hyde Park/Soho area (p. 10), or head to charming Downtown St. Pete to seek out more shops as well as the Morean Arts Center. The local treasure plays host to The Chihuly Collection featured on our cover, but also hosts classes, glass-blowing demonstrations, and is home to the Morean Gallery Store, where you can shop the wares of local artists for a unique gift or memento of your time here with us.

Gasparilla: A Guide
Bust out your inner buccaneer and practice your most fearsome scowl and bow-legged swagger as you prepare to celebrate one of the nation’s biggest and most-loved festivals. Rollicking festivities turn Tampa into an uproarious pirate’s den January through March, when Gasparilla, the city’s extended lovefest of all things piratical, invades the city. Arrgh, matey. LYNN WAALKES
15
SO WHAT BE GASPARILLA, ANYWAY? Since 1904, Tampa has celebrated the exploits of Jose Gaspar, a mythical pirate roaming Florida’s coastline in the late 18th century. Expect a full-bore invasion Jan. 25, when about 700 pirates aboard the fully rigged, 147-foot-long Jose Gasparilla ship invade the bay, accompanied by hundreds of boats of all
types. Also invading town are more than 1 million revelers (300,000 at Gasparilla Pirate Fest alone), who will party hearty throughout the season. Pre- and post-invasion activities keep the pirate theme going from mid-January through mid-March. Here’s a quick ship’s log of Gasparilla festivities. For a full schedule of events, visit www.gasparillapiratefest.com.
THE GASPARILLA INVASION
Where Now
A week before the annual pirate invasion, Tampa throws a family-friendly, nonalcoholic day of festivities along Bayshore Boulevard. First celebrated in 1947, this year’s event includes lots of fun for pintsized pirates, but the main draws are the Children’s Parade (3:30-6 p.m.), with more than 100 floats, marching bands and other groups, and Tampa’s largest “piratechnic” fireworks display of the year (77:30 p.m.), launched from barges to re-create the battle between pirates and the City of Tampa. Although the event is free, bleacher tickets ($42) are recommended.
The 103rd Gasparilla Invasion and Parade of the Pirates, presented by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, strikes both terror and joy into the hearts of Tampa residents. The Jose Gasparilla sails up Seddon Channel accompanied by a “majestic flotilla,” docking at the Tampa Convention Center (1 p.m.). Once Tampa’s mayor hands over the key to the city, pirates celebrate with a 4.5-mile Gasparilla victory parade (2 p.m.), as some 300,000 onlookers cheer and clamor for beads. The Invasion Brunch at the Convention Center offers the best views. Brunch tickets start at $120.
SANT’ YAGO KNIGHT PARADE: FEB. 8, 6:30 P.M. (DATE SUBJECT TO CHANGE) Ybor City’s night parade dazzles with illuminated floats, costumed participants, music, street dancing and, of course, beads. The parade, dedicated to Tampa’s Latin heritage and culture, began in 1974. The Krewe of Sant’ Yago is represented by El Rey and La Reina and Royal Court. The best viewing takes place anywhere along 7th Ave., between Nuccio Parkway and 22 Ave. Food vendors offer treats along the parade route and coolers are welcome, but alcohol isn’t permitted, and drinks purchased in bars aren’t allowed on the street.

GASPARILLA ART, MUSIC & FILM FESTS: FEB 29-MAR. 22
Tampa’s annual Gasparilla races, established in 1978, benefit charitable youth organizations across the Tampa Bay area. There’s a walk/run along Bayshore Boulevard for everyone: 15K, 5K, 5K stroller, 5K walk, 8K, half marathon and various Michelob Ultra Challenges. Race headquarters are in the Tampa Convention Center, East Hall. For the younger set, the Gasparilla Distance Classic children’s races and activities take place Feb. 15. For more information and to sign up for events, including children’s events, visit www.rungasparilla.com.
What the tide brings in must eventually head back out to sea— or at least that’s the case with Jose Gaspar and his crew. The Gasparilla pirates get a spirited sendoff as they return the key to the city and Tampa’s mayor kicks them out of town. Festivities kickoff at 2 p.m., but the real fun starts at 3 o’clock, when the scalawags arrive. The key to the city is reclaimed at 6:15. Before and after, festival goers can expect plenty of merrymaking for all, including live music and a final cannon salute as the merry band of misfits sail out of view, with a promise to return again next year.
Three final arts-related festivals conclude Gasparilla season throughout March. Gasparilla Festival of the Arts welcomes artists from around the world for a juried show, with works hand-selected from over 1,000 submissions, live entertainment and a children’s art activity area. The 9th annual Gasparilla Music Festival benefits local youth music programs and art education. Finally, The Gasparilla International Film Festival draws about 15,000 film lovers annually for a six-day film event featuring more than 120 films and over 200 directors and industry members.
