Leprechaun Irish Pub Last night, I shook hands with a leprechaun; he told me his name was Paddy... Not an everyday experience, but perfectly normal at The Drunken Leprechaun (TDL) Irish Pub – Patong’s latest addition to the genre – where the meet-and-greet is done by a bunch of very happy-looking ‘little people’. TDL is a fun place spread over two floors – with the upper floor gallery looking down onto the ground floor, where the extremely talented musicians play live music every night from 8-til-late. Boasting authentic Irish food and drinks, sports on screen throughout the pub and a pool table, TDL is like a warm home-away-from-home. Planning to stay as authentic as possible for this Irish experience, I kicked off by ordering a Black & Tan (mixed Guinness & Kilkenny), then immediately got stuck into the pub grub with Potato Skins (filled with bacon, cheese & sour cream) and Beef Guinness Pie (beef stew topped with puff pastry). It would be enough to say that the food was delicious; or that the portions were generous. In fact, both are true and I struggled to finish. Not so the gent on a nearby table, who had accepted the TDL’s 15-minute challenge: finish 1,030 baht’s worth of food and drink in15 minutes and get it for free! I did leave just enough room, though, for a dessert that intrigued me: Guinness Cake (served with black coffee bean ice cream). Interesting, with a subtle taste that I wouldn’t have been able to identify if I hadn’t known... Authentic Irish pub food, décor that puts you in mind of an Irish pub, a delightful service team who do everything they can to make you feel welcome, an extensive drinks and food menu, as well as two of the most talented musicians I’ve seen on the circuit for a long time... why WOULDN’T you become a regular at TDL. To prove the point, TDL has already become the favourite of holiday-makers based in the area! With most main courses under 300 baht and a pint of Carlsberg at only 150 baht, you can spend some quality time at TDL without taking out a mortgage. But don’t go there to eat unless you take a healthy appetite with you – or a large ‘doggy bag’!

at Dream Phuket Hotel & Spa We arrived to find a convenient valet service, so it was just hop out and hand over the keys and be escorted to VU, the rooftop bar, for pre-dinner cocktails. So far all seamless and convenient. For our cocktails we both chose VU signature cocktails Clever not Clover and Mango Gala, both. Subtle and unique, they went down well! We shared a Big Kahuna Salad of crisp greens, grilled chilled chicken, juicy pineapple, red peppers, green beans, red onion, red cabbage and cucumbers – all tossed in sweet and tangy vinaigrette, layered between crispy wontons then finished with sesame seeds. A nicely chilled glass each of Matua Valley Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough Sound was the perfect accompaniment. Once the sunset had done its thing and we had devoured our salad, we took the lift down to Trilogy restaurant, overlooking the pool, where we opted for outside seating, but undercover. It was a beautiful balmy evening, ideal for al fresco dining – though an air conditioned dining area was an option. I started in on Lobster Bisque, with sizeable chunks of lobster and a reduced ‘soup’ with brandy, while my partner chose the French Onion Soup with cheese croutons. Then it was Surf ‘n Turf and Boston Lobster for our main course – both perfectly prepared and equisitely presented. We continued with wine by the glass, this time a Yellow Tail Shiraz from Australia. The night was still young and we’d heard that Indulge was another venue at Dream to savour! So off we went to a nearby lift and down to the ground floor. Plush leather seating and jazz / blues sounds set the mood in this gentlemen’s ‘club’. We capped our evening here with a couple of espressos, a glass of Hennessy XO, a Montecristo Edmundo cigar, a Grand Marnier – and a Tiramisu. We were in heaven! Dream is an easy place to stay and a hard place to leave. As our evening drew to a close, we started thinking about doing it all again – but in reverse order! We could start at Indulge for a light tapas snacks, move to Trilogy for a midafternoon light lunch, then maybe a swim followed by the pool bar, then afterwards up to VU for sunset cocktails and desserts. Now there’s an idea…

Only metres from Karon Beach, Mövenpick’s Karon Beach Square is the only complete ‘dining and chill’ destination of its type in the south of Phuket, with four very different dining options, a great range of local and imported beers, a fine selection of premium wines and spirits and a professional mixologist – who doubles as a juggler! Café Studio is a great place to relax and the perfect place to laze away an afternoon. Just watch the world go by or plug in your laptop in the library and take advantage of the free WiFi! Whether you’re there for just a few cool drinks or a refreshing feast, you won’t be disappointed. Marinated Seafood, Greek Salad and Pia-Diavolo Pizza are typical menu items. For dinner, wander over to El Gaucho for a Brazilian Churrasco treat, where the steaks are served “off the sword” – and they do mean a sword! Choose à la carte or go for the all-in Churrasco option, helping yourself to an abundant array of salads and choosing your meats from the sword. The succulent tenderloin is ‘pick of the bunch’, but musttry other meats include crocodile, chicken, rib-eye, T-bone, pork fillet and pork spare ribs. Sauces to go with the meats include Brazilian pepper, mushroom and bitter Chimichurri sauce (originally an Argentinian concoction). Next on the agenda, if you fancy oriental instead of Latin American, upstairs you’ll find Orient Asia. Here, the décor speaks of Asian influences with red wall panels, subtle back lighting and contrasting dark wood furniture. Decorative Chinese urns and bottles occupy the shelves along the walls. Here you’ll be pampered with Asian delights such as Thai Warm Shrimp Salad with lemongrass-mint leaf, Tom Kha Gai (spicy chicken and herbs cooked in coconut milk soup), Roast Duck Saigon or Steamed Whole Sea Bass with Lime garnished with chilli, garlic and coriander. For a change of pace and style, move on over to “upbeat and buzzing” Mint, with its lively ambience and not-tooloud music. While this is a very much a family orientated restaurant, there’s a lot going on, including frequent theme nights. Dinner is a choice of à la carte or help-yourself from the well-stocked carvery and buffet.

Wine & Grill Kata Boathouse has been a Kata Beach landmark since the last century and has had several renovations since first opening, the latest in 2012. The location is first class, right on the beach, waves practically lapping at your toes. I‘ve dined there often over the past 20 years and have always been impressed. A brighter and more airy Boathouse today offers alfresco dining on the balcony overlooking the beach, inside dining still with spectacular views and upstairs on the terrace, which has its own air-conditioned dining room that can be booked for private dinners. Now to the food… We kicked off with a selection of amuses bouche compliments of the chef, followed by Lobster Bisque Velouté (flambéed with brandy along with generous portions of lobster and garlic bread). My partner chose Escargots (classic French snails with garlic butter and parsley). Between courses, I chose a melt-in-the-mouth Pan-fried duck foie gras with sautéed wild mushrooms and port reduction. To accompany our meal we took a sweet and fruity Jurançon Famille Castel 2009, which made for a refreshing combination that served us well all evening, right through to desserts. For main course I chose the Trilogy of Rock Lobster (served with three sauces: green curry, Armagnac, Thermidor) – heavenly! My partner had the succulent Thailand Charolaise Beef. I had left room for Banana fritters and coconut ice cream and my more adventurous partner chose the Chocolate Praline (a chocolate monster with mouse, chocolate sponge cake, chunky flakes of chocolate and praline chocolate sauce). The Boathouse team were friendly and obviously trained to a high standard; many have worked there for 15 years. It’s really hard to go wrong at Boathouse. Excellent service, extensive top quality menu and wine list, delicious food and right on the beach with a view to die for, especially at sunset. Add to that the atmosphere with a live duo playing flute and piano, the lapping of the waves – and arguably the best wine cellar on the island – what more could you ask for...? ...well, this actually: they have a take-you-home service for guests who have drunk too much to drive safely. Collect your car next day. Smart move! And a local pick-up service too. 13

Side dishes and fine wines were glorious accompaniments. The irrestible sweet treats included a French-style cheesecake and an assortment of chocolate treasures beautifully crafted. Not forgetting the between-courses palate cleanser: fruit sherbet and Bailey’s ice cream. Perfect! Top quality ingredients, on which Chef Justin has based some outstanding dishes, together with flair in preparation and presentation combine to create a memorable occasion. Along with superb hospitality and a peaceful and idyllic setting, the recipe is there for an elegant and unmatched evening.

A true oasis in the heart of Patong... A sports bar with lots of international sports on multiple screens throughout, Hooters’ pedigree dates back to April Fools Day in 1983 in Clearwater, Florida. Waitresses are numerous, energetic and uniformly cute. Every half hour they stop serving and entertain you with one of their 20 choreographed dance routines. Hooters is about sports, fun and food – but not necessarily in that order. We were greeted as we entered and offered a sidewalk table where we could watch the the world go by, upstairs in air conditioning or stools at the bar. We chose the bar and started our Hooters night with a couple of cocktails (a Mango Mojito and a Mango Margarita). I’m a bit of a TV channel changer at home, so it was easy here for me to take in the cricket, rugby, women’s golf and Aussie Rules football all at the same time! After our cocktails, we moved to the raised undercover sidewalk seating that stretches down the side of the Hooters apparel shop. There were plenty of ceiling fans, all running at high speed to keep the airflow brisk and cool. We started with Boneless Wings (with an amazing choice of 11 cooking flavours and four dip varieties) and Crumbed Calamari, both cooked to perfection and served promptly. We’d enjoyed the mojitos and margaritas earlier, so carried on with a few more. For mains we outdid ourselves ordering the Ribs. Neither of us were able to finish because we wanted to leave a little room to sample the desserts. We ended up with doggy bags and enjoyed our ribs all over again the next day for lunch – scrumptious both times! We heard it was common for diners to underestimate the meal sizes and doggy bags were the norm. We managed to get down a couple of Pecan Pies but then had to call it quits. Hooters’ menu is varied and we only skimmed the surface. I’ll come back with a larger group next time to experience more of the impressive menu. Upbeat music accompanied us during the evening with middle of the road retro and latest hits. Nothing heavy and no disco or house music – Just right!

Day & Night Beach Club Vibrant, chic and upbeat, with a refreshing new slant on the roof top beach club scene. It’s hard to be different nowadays, yet On Top have managed to add various twists to every aspect of a rooftop club venue, including real palm trees, flames from cauldrons of charcoal and much, much more. We were greeted by one of the attractive attendants and led past a strip of VIP cabanas and a mermaid in a small pool lazing in a hammock. Yes, a mermaid! On our left were numerous dining settings with a large protective awning. Perched on high stools overlooking the street, with a view to the beach and the Patong skyline, we devoured a couple of ‘On Top’ signature cocktails: Cai-beer-inha (Singha beer, limes, brown sugar and crushed mint leaves) and a Pearl of Mermaid (Chalong Bay Rum, passion fruit tapioca and melon liquor). Time for dinner! To start, we shared Garden of Eden (Niçoise beef tartar with quail egg, taggiasche olives, yellow and purple potatoes and anchovy emulsion) and a Pinky Temptation (marinated shrimp, caviar, cauliflower dressed with Campari and raspberry vinaigrette.) We topped that off with Sushi and Sashimi, including mackerel, tuna, salmon and octopus. A stroll between courses revealed the rest of the venue, which spans two roof tops and includes a professional kitchen, a good sized swimming pool surround by comfy deck loungers near another small dining area. The venue has four individual locations for dining to suit all tastes and a sizable bar area, all with panoramic views and a retractable roof. Then it was crisp Fish Tacos – filled with butter fish, lettuce and avocado along with a Mexican chipotle cream sauce. And we downed a bottle of Australian Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay, although you can get every drink (nonalcoholic too) imaginable from the extensive drinks menu. The music was thumping, a good mix with plenty of variety including House, Disco as well as more recent hits, with some retro thrown into the mix. At On Top, you can swim, eat, drink and chill out, while enjoying a beach lounger with complimentary towel and umbrella. I wonder why you’d bother going to the beach... 17

We arrived at peaceful Naiton Beach just before sunset and handed our car keys to the Trisara valet, boarded a golf cart and were driven through quiet alleyways to the beachfront bar, pool and restaurants. We started with cocktails outside, just a few metres from the beachside restaurant. I selected a Trisara Pisco Sour, claimed by Peru as its national drink, athough Chile also lays claim. My partner took the less contentious Passionfruit Margarita. While we considered our order, we enjoyed an amuse bouche followed by a bread tray with a selection of natural, garlic or black truffle homemade butter. I started with Smoked Salmon with avocado, brioche, yuzu, daikon and salmon caviar, while my partner chose Tuna ‘burnt’, with Phuket oyster, quinoa, seaweed, cucumber and with a grated sprinkling of Buddha’s Hand (a citrus fruit shaped like fingers). To accompany our meal we chose a semi-sweet Austrian Kracher Chardonnay (a beneficiary of the ‘noble rot’) and were drawn to the Oyster Bar between courses. We shared a Trio of Special Oysters comprising Fin de Claire with saffron, hollandaise, chives and deep fried shallots; Irish Oyster with white miso, white balsamic, citrus and black sesame; Belon Oyster with bergamot, horseradish and green apple. We followed that with Canadian Lobster poached with bone marrow, baby onion, sweet carrot jus and green asparagus and Tiger Prawns seared and served on a bed of Himalayan salt, accompanied by pilaf rice. Surprisingly, we still had room for desserts. While our choices may sound simple, they were not. We shared Coconut Culture and Cheese Cake and were mightily impressed. The service staff were courteous, efficient and, most important, friendly – taking care happily of our every need. I could not find words to adequately describe how good everything we sampled was, in both presentation and taste. Brilliant, superb, fantastic or even “blown away” are close, but inadequate. Maybe this: we struggled to eat slower just so we could enjoy longer. Everyone should experience the restaurant Seafood at Trisara at least once. It is quite simply, WOW!
