More than 25 years ago, Baan Rim Pa Patong opened its doors and has continued to be one of Phuket’s best known restaurants, winning more fine dining awards than any other Phuket restaurant. In its cliffside teak house, with panoramic sea views over Patong Bay, it offers impeccably prepared Royal Thai Cuisine – which is only part of the fine dining experience. Next door to the original Baan Rim Pa Patong, Joe’s Downstairs is a different world. Crisp white décor, long terrazzo bar and outdoor dining decks just feet away from the sea are part of what make Joe’s unique. Award-winning Chef Aaron Hooper’s distinctive menu combines New World cuisine with Asian and Western style tapas, accompanied by your choice from Joe’s Wine Spectator Award-winning cellar. A favourite haunt of celebrities – and the island choice for weddings and birthday parties with a touch of class – Joe’s is unbeatable. More than 20 years, and many awards on, Da Maurizio Bar Ristorante (next door to Joe’s) continues to offer discerning diners the finest contemporary Italian cuisine. Almost on the rocks, this is one of the most stunning settings on Phuket – its spectacular backdrop a firm favourite. The menu changes regularly depending on the season and on what tempting ingredients can be found by the Chef. This is one of the most romantic dining locations on Phuket.

Two Chefs’ secret of success is serving up some of the most delicious food on the island at affordable prices. Service staff are friendly and eager to give recommendations, while remaining professional and unobtrusive. In Phuket, there are three Two Chefs Bar & Grill restaurant outlets, in Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Center. These restaurants have been driven forward by the same management team for 15 years, which goes some way to explaining the reputation for excellence the brand has achieved, as well as their loyal following among Phuket residents and regular overseas visitors alike. Two Chefs Patong was buzzing when we arrived at 8.30pm – a good sign, especially when others nearby were very quiet! If you arrive by taxi, get dropped at the door, but if you’re coming by car you’ll need to hunt for parking and may need a short walk back. Seating is all open air with fans. At the back of the restaurant there’s an acoustic guitarist strumming away with a selection of middle-of-the-road songs, adding to the open air ambience and complementing Patong’s passing people parade. We got stuck into a couple of great cocktails: a raspberry Margarita and a sizable mug/jug of Mojito, mixed exactly as I like it. Then our starters arrived really quickly – mine a wonderfully creamy Lobster bisque flavoured with saffron and served with garlic bread, my partner’s a tasty Toast Skagen (prawns in mayonnaise with dill and lemon on toast). For main course, we shared a combination plate of Ribs, chicken legs, crispy potato wedges, salad and dipping sauces and a Wooden platter with grilled salmon, sautéed spinach, mashed potato oven baked with red wine and lemon and thyme hollandaise sauce. Superb and perfect food to share! For dessert it was Apple pie à la Two Chefs with vanilla sauce and a Crème brûlée – both perfectly excellent. Easy listing live music, efficient service with attentive staff, a huge variety of menu choices – and a chance to try Scandinavian food at its best. Lucky for us they’ve opened in Patong. Not so lucky for the surrounding restaurants...

Only metres from Karon Beach, Mövenpick’s Karon Beach Square is the only complete ‘dining and chill’ destination of its type in the south of Phuket, with four very different dining options, a great range of local and imported beers, a fine selection of premium wines and spirits and a professional mixologist – who doubles as a juggler! Café Studio is a great place to relax and the perfect place to laze away an afternoon. Just watch the world go by or plug in your laptop in the library and take advantage of the free WiFi! Whether you’re there for just a few cool drinks or a refreshing feast, you won’t be disappointed. Marinated Seafood, Greek Salad and Pia-Diavolo Pizza are typical menu items. For dinner, wander over to El Gaucho for a Brazilian Churrasco treat, where the steaks are served “off the sword” – and they do mean a sword! Choose à la carte or go for the all-in Churrasco option, helping yourself to an abundant array of salads and choosing your meats from the sword. The succulent tenderloin is ‘pick of the bunch’, but musttry other meats include crocodile, chicken, rib-eye, T-bone, pork fillet and pork spare ribs. Sauces to go with the meats include Brazilian pepper, mushroom and bitter Chimichurri sauce (originally an Argentinian concoction). Next on the agenda, if you fancy oriental instead of Latin American, upstairs you’ll find Orient Asia. Here, the décor speaks of Asian influences with red wall panels, subtle back lighting and contrasting dark wood furniture. Decorative Chinese urns and bottles occupy the shelves along the walls. Here you’ll be pampered with Asian delights such as Thai Warm Shrimp Salad with lemongrass-mint leaf, Tom Kha Gai (spicy chicken and herbs cooked in coconut milk soup), Roast Duck Saigon or Steamed Whole Sea Bass with Lime garnished with chilli, garlic and coriander. For a change of pace and style, move on over to “upbeat and buzzing” Mint, with its lively ambience and not-tooloud music. While this is a very much a family orientated restaurant, there’s a lot going on, including frequent theme nights. Dinner is a choice of à la carte or help-yourself from the well-stocked carvery and buffet.

Beef has been farm raised and grass or grain fed, the poultry is organic and the seafood caught fresh daily, while produce is obtained from organic farmers. Finger foods, breads and sweets are all made in house. Chef Justin – renowned for his passion in all aspects of cooking (and indeed his passion in explaining it!) – served an unparalleled array of appetizers, main courses and desserts. Scallops, scotch single malt salmon, blue crab ravioli and foie gras marked the beginning, exhibiting an intricate combination of ingredients, perfect on the palate and elegantly presented. The main course featured top-notch quality meats from Australia – pedigree Hereford and Black Angus beef and lamb – cooked to medium-rare perfection. Side dishes and fine wines were glorious accompaniments. The irresistible sweet treats included a French-style cheesecake and an assortment of chocolate treasures beautifully crafted. Not forgetting the between-courses palate cleanser: fruit sherbet and Bailey’s ice cream. Perfect! Top quality ingredients, on which Chef Justin has based some outstanding dishes, together with flair in preparation and presentation combine to create a memorable occasion. Along with superb hospitality and a peaceful and idyllic setting, the recipe is there for an elegant and unmatched evening. 11

It’s easy valet parking at The Nai Harn and just a short walk to what must be one of Phuket’s closest restaurants to the beach and rocks. Our table had waves slapping across the rocks nearby, with the beach just metres away. We arrived in time for an impressive sunset with an uninterrupted view of Nai Harn Beach, Cape Promthep and the Andaman Sea. Two Lady Nai Harn signature cocktails (Chalong Bay rum, limoncello, mango juice, lime juice, honey and mint) were a good start to the evening. Cocktails were accompanied by bread sticks with Baba Ganoush and olive oil dips. We started with a Rock Salt Platter (taramasalata, hummus, fava, tzatziki and lamb kofta on pita bread), and a Ceviche (white snapper, lemon, olive oil, fresh mint and coriander). We chose a Monsoon Valley White Shiraz Rosé, made entirely in Thailand. A light, fruity wine that proved the perfect complement to our meals. After a comfortable interval, our main course arrived on two three-tier stainless platters. For me the Rawai Sea Gypsy Platter (mussels, calamari, tiger prawns, blue swimmer crabs in yellow curry with slices of lemon, lime and seafood sauce). For my partner an Andaman Platter (sea shrimps, tiger prawns, Fine de Claire oysters and steamed Rawai clams in chilli, ginger, garlic and coconut milk, served with garlic bread, red wine shallot vinegar, tabasco, fresh lemon and oil). The portions were generous to say the least! Dessert was a Coconut Pannacotta (with fruit salad and homemade passion fruit ice cream) that looked good and tasted divine. My partner’s reluctance gave way and an order for one became two. It was just too hard to resist. Rock Salt gives a sense of privacy with little alcoves, different levels and comfortable loungers, while the service team is discreet but attentive. It was also good to see a restaurant built around existing trees instead of cutting them down. This restaurant has it all: perfect location, cosy setting, diverse menu to suit every budget and great food and service. Rock Salt should be at the top of your ‘give-it-a-try’ list.

at the Nai Harn My beer turned up in its own ice bucket – a nice touch – and my partner got stuck into a Lady Nai Harn cocktail (Chalong Bay Rum, Limoncello, mango juice, lime juice and mint), while we enjoyed the impressive panorama of the yachts in Nai Harn Bay and the near-perfect sunset. Chef Kevin Fawkes came to our table and offered some advice for starters. We followed his direction and took the salad of Line-caught seared yellow fin tuna, garden greens, avocado, watermelon with ponzu citrus dressing and the Sautéed hand-dived Hokkaido scallops with Masago caviar, wasabi and sea vegetable salad. The starters came with a basket of bread and three dipping sauces. We then shared a platter of Black mussels with chili, coriander and coconut milk, followed by a tangy hand-made Nai Harn bakery sorbet. For our main course we shared a surf and turf combination of Australian Hereford prime pasture-raised beef tenderloin, Rawai sea gypsy Calamari and Tiger prawns accompanied by Savoy black pepper sauce, Béarnaise sauce, lobster butter and beach watercress. This was cooked at our table on a charcoal grill and served on large slate plates. Absolutely fantastic! We went for wine by the glass to ‘test’ the novel argon gas-injected system that ensures a wide variety of wines can be sold by the glass. We enjoyed a Fontanasanta Manzoni Bianco 2013, that was not unlike a top Burgundy white. It’s worth noting that all the wines at Cosmo are selected and rated by internationally-acclaimed wine critic James Suckling. We managed to make room for desserts, opting for Caramelised banana and yogurt cake with banana beignets, milk chocolate and banana soup and Tahitian vanilla baked cheesecake with raspberry sorbet and Muscovado crisp. Both delicate presentations. If you’re looking for a superior and entertaining culinary experience, Cosmos will stimulate all your senses and help you discover more. An impressive location in stylish surroundings with an unbeatable view, staff who made us feel like royalty and a chef ready to share his passion for food. Faultless from beginning to end! 13

Wine & Grill Kata Boathouse has been a Kata Beach landmark since the last century and has had several renovations since first opening, the latest in 2012. The location is first class, right on the beach, waves practically lapping at your toes. I‘ve dined there often over the past 20 years and have always been impressed. A brighter and more airy Boathouse today offers alfresco dining on the balcony overlooking the beach, inside dining still with spectacular views and upstairs on the terrace, which has its own air-conditioned dining room that can be booked for private dinners. Now to the food… We kicked off with a selection of amuses bouche compliments of the chef, followed by Lobster Bisque Velouté (flambéed with brandy along with generous portions of lobster and garlic bread). My partner chose Escargots (classic French snails with garlic butter and parsley). Between courses, I chose a melt-in-the-mouth Pan-fried duck foie gras with sautéed wild mushrooms and port reduction. To accompany our meal we took a sweet and fruity Jurançon Famille Castel 2009, which made for a refreshing combination that served us well all evening, right through to desserts. For main course I chose the Trilogy of Rock Lobster (served with three sauces: green curry, Armagnac, Thermidor) – heavenly! My partner had the succulent Thailand Charolaise Beef. I had left room for Banana fritters and coconut ice cream and my more adventurous partner chose the Chocolate Praline (a chocolate monster with mouse, chocolate sponge cake, chunky flakes of chocolate and praline chocolate sauce). The Boathouse team were friendly and obviously trained to a high standard; many have worked there for 15 years. It’s really hard to go wrong at Boathouse. Excellent service, extensive top quality menu and wine list, delicious food and right on the beach with a view to die for, especially at sunset. Add to that the atmosphere with a live duo playing flute and piano, the lapping of the waves – and arguably the best wine cellar on the island – what more could you ask for...? ...well, this actually: they have a take-you-home service for guests who have drunk too much to drive safely. Collect your car next day. Smart move! And a local pick-up service too.

Vegetarian Festival The Chinese community had such critical mass that an itinerant Chinese opera company visited to entertain them. Here the story gets a little confused, but basically the whole area was struck by a major epidemic and almost everybody except the opera players became sick. Following their beliefs, the players had stuck to their religious calendar, which at this time of year required that they observe a strict vegetarian diet and offer prayers to two Chinese gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. The residents attributed their invulnerability to these religious observances.

Each year,at this time, the area around Phuket’s Fresh Market becomes congested with food stalls and everywhere is festooned with red lanterns and Chinese dragons, all centred on the Jui Tui shrine. One of the fascinating aspects of Phuket’s cultural traditions is the complex fusion of Chinese religious beliefs, with those of the original inhabitants of the island.

One of the strange and even controversial aspects of the various processions is the activities of the Ma Song or ‘possessed horses’. These religious zealots transform themselves into a trancelike state and perform acts of mortification which range from climbing ladders with steel blades for rungs, walking across red hot coals and immersing themselves in hot oil. In a further, rather gruesome, practise, adherents pierce their faces and tongues with everything from skewers to bicycle spokes to axes. Oddly enough, this self mutilation results in little bleeding or subsequent scarring. Stranger than fiction. However it’s not for the queasy so probably best not to bring the kids!
