STEWART D. M C LAURIN PRESIDENT, WHITE HOUSE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

as i write my first column of 2021, the new year has already opened new chapters in White House history. Most significantly, we as a nation have undertaken the Inauguration of a new president, and we at the White House Historical Association have now begun our work with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. They are the twelfth president and first lady with whom the Association will collaborate to enhance the public’s “understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the historic White House.” Since I became president of the Association in 2014, it has been my honor to have worked with the Obamas, Trumps, and now the Bidens, their staffs, and the many career professionals who care for the Residence from one administration to the next. I look forward to the coming years of undertaking projects traditionally related to our mission as well as those inspired by the Bidens’ own unique and fresh vision. The new year also marks the sixtieth anniversary of the White House Historical Association as the private nonprofit educational organization founded by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to share and preserve the history of the White House. As we look back on the body of work accomplished by the Association since 1961, we are proud to have played a key role in establishing a world-class fine and decorative arts collection maintained according to museum standards.

110

The Association has invested more than $100 million of nontaxpayer funding in the preservation and acquisition this collection. As you look at pages following my column you will see a record of sixty years of acquisitions made possible by the Association. Many nineteenth-century furnishings—acquired during one presidency and later, worn out or out of date, sold or disposed of during another presidency—have been returned to the collection and are now treasured representations of the nation’s history, preserved and displayed for the American people. Other significant acquisitions were made by the recommendation of recent first ladies and the Committee for the Preservation of the White House. The Association’s educational programming has reached millions of people since our founding. Our books, programs, and digital offerings have opened the doors to the history of the White House from 1792 when George Washington personally sited its foundation to 2021 when the Bidens settled into their new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. In earlier pages of this issue of the Quarterly you saw the leaders who preceded Frederick J. Ryan Jr., our chairman, and myself as leaders of the Association. My sincere appreciation will always go to the founders for creating a structure for the robust organization

that our current leadership inherited. I am pleased to include with this column photographs of our current Board of Directors and National Council on White House History. I am thankful for the wise governance of our dedicated Board and for the National Council’s generous financial support. Their unwavering dedication to our mission will see us through this pandemic crisis and the many other challenges facing the world today. I am very grateful to my colleagues on the staff of the White House Historical Association. For the past ten months, they have kept their eye on the ball, remained committed and driven, and brought us through this trying time successfully. Mrs. Kennedy famously said that “the White House belongs to the American people.” In the United States, we have experienced fifty-nine inaugurations of forty-five presidents. Presidents and their families have the temporary stewardship of the White House, and they care for this historic home and pass it on to those who follow. I truly believe that the best days and most exciting work of the White House Historical Association are to come, and I cannot wait to see what that future will bring. Stewart D. McLaurin at the Dacha Navy Yard mural of Jacqueline Kennedy.
