Letter from the Editor
COURTESY OF SAMANTHA GERWEPERKINS
Editor-in-Chief SENIOR Matthew Youkilis has been a Chatterbox staff member since 2015. He will attend Yale University in the fall studying Political Science and History.
Dear Readers, I cannot believe I am writing these words. Ever since I nervously stepped into room 2306 on the first day of ninth grade, I have been proud to grow as a student journalist on The Chatterbox, gaining new skills and insights in every interview, meeting and late work night. And now, nearly four years and thousands of words written later, I am proud to write my final piece for The Chatterbox and reflect on all that we have accomplished this year. I can’t go any further without thanking all those who have contributed to The Chatterbox this year.
First, to our teacher and adviser, Samantha Gerwe-Perkins (who we just call G-P), thank you for the guidance, mentorship and passion that you bring every day without seeking any form of recognition. And to our entire staff, whether you contributed one article or practically lived in the J-Lab, you have added to the journalistic legacy of our school and have made our newspaper this year stronger. Each of you, from experienced editors to eager seventh graders, has helped The Chatterbox achieve the goals we set at the beginning of the year. Together, we have greatly expanded our multimedia production, remarkably improving our website (whhscbox.com) and ensuring we regularly update it with stimulating, relevant news. We have started a Chatterbox podcast program, and we have begun to extend our social media influence so we can more easily relate stories directly to students. Because, ultimately, we know that The Chatterbox only exists because of the students of WHHS and this vibrant community that we have built. For being our subjects, our interviewees and our readers, we thank you. By picking up a copy of The Chatterbox, you are extending
the distinguished legacy of WHHS that is rooted in student expression. I have been proud to contribute to this legacy, and even prouder to watch as younger students grow into the budding journalists who will make The Chatterbox even better in the years to come. Next year, this will begin with another amazing staff, led by Editor-in-Chief Caroline Horvath and Deputy Editor-in-Chief Isabel Nissley, who I am confident will continue to make The Chatterbox the epitome of a strong student newspaper and advance this publication even further. But before next year comes, I want to leave you with one final message. As I prepare to leave WHHS in a few short days, I have only now begun to understand how unique our school is and how unique the stories within it—from those we hear in the halls to those we create ourselves–can be. We in The Chatterbox are proud to tell these stories, and we hope that every member of the WHHS community knows that they add to our school’s collective story.
With nostalgia and hope, Matthew Youkilis

WHHS bids farewell to retirees

Dominic Lovaglio has been a part of the science department at WHHS for 11 years. His favorite part about WHHS is the students and faculty who have made his 11 years exciting and enjoyable every year.
Cat George has taught in the WHHS art department for 19 years. Additionally, she has taught outside of WHHS for an additional 10 years.
Ibrahim Munir, ‘19
Conrad Kleiner, ‘19
Dominic Lovaglio, well known for his fantastical stories and passion for everything science, is retiring from WHHS after an 11 year journey. Lovaglio has been the 8th Grade Honors science teacher for the past decade, and teaching them has been his favorite part about WHHS, along with the camaraderie of the science department staff and working with them. He truly enjoys working with both students and teachers at WHHS because it is a “wonderful mix of different people from all over.”
Lovaglio’s passion for teaching was fostered during his high school years as an athlete. “I was a fairly good athlete, but I was fascinated by the coaching aspect of it and started coaching as well as playing. I get more of a satisfaction out of seeing someone use what I’ve taught them to perform rather than me performing. I just enjoy teaching.” Although he did not know he wanted to be in the education field during his teenage years, he knew that he loved helping others grow to be the best they could be.
After a career totaling 19 years of teaching at Walnut and 29 years of teaching art classes to students across the CPS district, Cat George has decided to hang up the brush, and announced her retirement as of this year. George’s 19 years at Walnut have been memorable ones, especially of the talented students she’s helped mentor. “I love working with the students. They’re so talented.” Her favorite memories at Walnut came from the chalk drawing, a yearly exhibition
of Walnut talent. “Chalk drawing is just an awesome day that they get to perform their talents,” George said. Despite her retirement, she still retains her love of art and Walnut, and plans on coming back to judge the chalk drawing in the following years. Although the personalities and memories George has developed over the years are far too myriad to list, they will all stick with her for many years to come, as will our memories of her.
