Prom theme offers escape from ordinary

est has partied with the “Lights Out” during homecoming and gone “Wild and Crazy” at football games. Now it’s time to enter “Wonderland.” With its neon lights and dreamlike decorations, the 2011 prom theme captures the wildness and creativity of the school’s upperclassmen. Students can make the most of the theme on prom night by wearing Wonderlandinspired formal wear. • Alice: Light blue dress, Mary Jane heels • Mad Hatter: Top hat, tails • Cheshire Cat: Purple dress or jacket • White Rabbit: Vest with pocket watch • Queen of Hearts: Red dress, roses Other tips for prom night through the looking glass: look for floral patterns, vivid colors.

he priciest item on most girls’ prom list is their dress. For the thrifty fashionista, donated dresses can be the best way to look good at prom without having to break the bank. English teacher and prom sponsor Teresa Davis, who collects and distributes approximately 30 previously owned dresses each year, will be collecting donated gowns until prom. They can be dropped off in Z-1. Any girls interested in picking one up are encouraged to come by. Sophomore Anne Ignizio donated a dress to the cause in the hopes that whoever wears it will have a chance to shine at prom. “I hope it will give them extra confidence and make them feel great for one evening or forever, because a good outfit can do that,” Ignizio said.

rom is the biggest fashion event of the average high school career. To help students prepare to look their best, the prom comittee held a prom fashion show on Tuesday, March 29 during all three lunches in the auditorium. A group of seniors and juniors modeled dresses from David’s Bridal and tuxes from An English Flower Cottage and Formal Wear. Both businesses passed out coupons for formal wear to the students who attended.

ooking impressive on prom night can be just as important for guys as for girls. Tux rental venues offer variety in color, style and price for prom attendees. Located in downtown Hendersonville, An English Flower Cottage is a one-stop shop for prom goers looking for tux rentals and flowers for dates. Mitchell’s Tuxedos in the Asheville Mall has a wide selection. For a 10 percent off coupon on rentals, visit www. mitchellstuxedos.net. The Men’s Wearhouse in Asheville is a popular place for prom tux rentals. The tux rentals section of www. menswearhouse.com offers color guides and other tips for a perfect look.

oing out to eat before prom tends to be a tradition among students. Eating at a restaurant is ideal for some, but for others it could be a hardship to afford. Not many students know that the prom offers an array of appetizers and desserts for attendees. With appetizers available during prom, it’s possible that students could cut the dinner plans out of the budget if necessary. “There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts such as chocolate covered strawberries,” English teacher Teresa Davis said. “With today’s economy there’s no need to spend a fortune at a restaurant before prom,” Davis said.

“I feel like prom is something you look forward to for a really long time, and then when it happens you’re like, ‘Oh, that was it.’ But it’s still fun. For some people it’s the highlight of their life, but then it was just a night. The best part was when you first get there, everyone is so excited to see each other — just seeing everyone all dressed up and in such good moods, and everyone was like each other’s best friend.” Megan King senior “My favorite memory from prom last year was the dancing and the music because it was so energetic that nobody really cared about how they looked. Everyone was just having fun and living in the moment. Nobody really cared about who was around them; they were just having fun and letting loose. I was excited and happy to be there. I danced appropriately, but some other people didn’t.”

“My favorite memory from last year’s prom was when Hannah Wilson, D.J. Rauland, Miles Heywood and I were all dancing, and after each song we kept switching dance partners. We did this for a while, and Hannah decided she was going to drink some water and dance at the same time. She ended up spilling it on the floor and all over my feet and the bottom of my shoes.”

“Last year I took Jessica Swayngim and Ashley Roy to prom. There were two levels in the building, and we were up top looking for someone, and when we found them we were going back down the stairs and she (Roy) tripped and fell down the second half of the steps. It was hilarious. She didn’t faceplant; she tripped and caught herself, but she fell down and swung and hit an area on the bar.” Wilson Billingsley senior
