Hello Whidbey I’m Back!

It is great to be writing again and I hope I can give some of you some insight on the tremendous opportunities our great state offers when pursuing Fish, Fur and Fowl. I’d like to thank the Whidbey Weekly for giving me this opportunity to serve you and hope you find my articles pertinent and informative. I always look forward to hearing from you and it helps keep things fresh and current.  As the New Year kicks off a lot of us daydream and try to figure out what we can do to keep ourselves busy. Fortunately we still have the Seahawks and another impressive year, but as good as that is we still think “what are we going to do this year?� Well not all is lost as there are plenty of things to do in the slow season. January still has a few dates you should keep in mind. January 25 will mark the end of waterfowl season so you have just under two weeks left to finish filling your freezer. The season in general has been average with the biggest push of birds happening with the big cold snap we had at the end of November going into early December. That doesn’t mean birds are not still around. You are just going to have to work a little harder for those that stayed around and have received pressure all season long. For those big game hunters out there January 31 is the date you need to be concerned about. This is when your hunt reports are due to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). You can submit them either by phone, (877) 945-3492, or online at www.wdfw.wa.gov. According to their website “Hunters should be prepared to note the game management unit they hunted and their individual WILD identification number, which is printed on license documents. Whether reporting online or over the phone, hunters should follow the prompts until they receive a confirmation number for each report.� Make sure you get those reports done in time or you will have to pay a $10 fine prior to purchasing your license next year. February 1, winter crab catch card reports are due. Those of you who braved the elements in pursuit of those tasty crustaceans

can submit them either online or by mail to: WDFW Fish Program Card Report Card Office, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA 98501-1091or the WDFW website. Failure to do so will also result in a $10 fine. Winter Chinook fishing is still going on around the Island now and with Area 9 opening up January 16, all waters around Whidbey will be open. Fishing has been pretty consistent with the mild winter we have been so fortunate to have. We took the boat out earlier this month to check out Lopez flats and managed to catch one just undersized and the boat next to us landed a decent one that was probably in the 10-12lb range. Even though we had to release it, what a great way to start 2015 with a tug at the end of our line. I have also seen reports from the banks too that show the fish are out there. Look for bait and get your gear down by the bottom. We were fishing in about 120’ of water with 120’ of cable out on the downrigger. I deviated from my tried and true green flasher and instead went with an orange glow with a white Coho killer. I managed to hook up after marking bait on the fish finder. They are going to require a little extra work but they’re out there. Winter steelhead is in full swing as well.

Things have been pretty quiet around local rivers but a few scattered reports coming from further south show good initial starts.

I expect it to pick up here soon and once it does I will be sure to let you know. If winter fishing is not on your schedule then this is the time to get your gear cleaned up, repaired or replaced in preparation for a little storage time before breaking it out again for next season. This can include winterizing your boat, and/or winterizing your little mobile hunting cabin as I did last week.

Cleaning and lubing reels, rifles and bows is something our dining room table enjoys almost every January. Be sure not to forget those that didn’t get any use as well. Lastly, this is a time to reflect and share stories with friends and family of the experiences you enjoyed last year. The big one that got away or even the one on a wall or in your freezer. Keeping the thrill of catching the next big fish or tagging game fresh in your mind is what drives us to improve and gets us through these quiet months. On Track with Jim Freeman

Last weekend’s meeting of my A.D.H.D. support group was postponed.

We were all so busy trying to remember what we were going to talk about none of us showed up.

I blame the influx of information from the parts of my brain that

are not listening.

If you understood any of this, welcome to On Track, where being sidetracked takes us off track to exciting destinations of the unknown.

The Explanation It has been said by someone who prefers to remain anonymous, that the “brains of older people are slow because they know so much.

People do not decline mentally with age; it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe.

Who knows how many of us are still vertical and still willing to make the trek to far away places where people no longer look like the picture on their name tag.

I am not sure what to do.

I went to the 15th. I went to the 20th. I went to the 25th.

Dick is the son of Mr. Newt Houtz, our high school driving instructor. If you took Newt's driver training class, you would not only learn how to drive better than your parents, you would learn how to pray.

"The human brain works slower in old age", said Dr. Michael Ramscar, "but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more."

I already had a driver's license from Ohio, where we could drive at 16, and drink beer at 18.

Well, they called it beer.

I learned later that 3.2 was not really beer, but a grade point I hoped to achieve in my lifetime.

So, the jury is still out on these reunions.

In fact, we have yet to voir dire the jury.

Did you go to your 50th?

What do you mean, you are already asleep?

I just heard someone say it is because I have been in the dark most of my life.

Well, we do live in the Northwest.

A few years back, I bought two of those yellow colored EZ Eyes computer keyboards they sell in the Things Sold on TV section, by the check out aisles of Wal-Mart.

The EZ Eyes worked great until the letters began to disappear.

Being a trained killer, I learned to wield a firm finger as a supply clerk typist in the Marine Corps.

Spring Training My buddy Bob Moliter is down in Phoenix trying to warm up.

Of course, Bob just attended the Huskies/Oklahoma State debacle in 30 degree temps down in Tempe, at the Citrus Bowl or Cactus Bowl or Cold Bowl, whatever it was. Nice warm up, Bob? Bob was a longtime coach, and vice-principal, at some high school near Auburn that prefers to keep their mascot anonymous in this particular space.

I love talking to retired teachers about the old days, back when the smoke from the teachers’ lounge was thick enough, and continuous enough, to hide the seniors making out in the corner of the stairwell.

Most of my favorite letters, the vowels, seem to be on the left side of the keyboard. At least the A and E are there.

I always looked away, didn’t you?

The I is on the top row, right side, between the other two vowels, U and O.

I called them “lucky.”

Isn’t that something? All these years as a two fingered hunt and pecker and I just figured out where the U is.

I need to talk to U more often.

So, with worn out vowels, I went online to see if there were any keyboards for sale where the letters light up, like bowling pins do on Cosmic bowling night at Ebey Bowl.

Voila (three vowels)!!!

On Amazon, I was able to find a vision backlit keyboard with LARGE PRINT KEYS, and five backlight colors of yellow, aquamarine, blue, pink and red.

The unit is made by A Z I O, model KB 506. The A on AZIO is actually two slash marks, /\, which took me quite a bit of time to find on this bright red mode keyboard.

Dad called them “hoods.”

So, Bob knows all these great stories about the pressure from parents to change grades, to advance a kid, to modify a kid, to do just about anything, but fold, spindle, or mutilate a kid.

I knew back in high school those teachers were more real than they appeared. They were not all monsters of the hallway.

What is a little lunch money between friends, eh?

So, Bob is down there in Phoenix, staying warm, eating great food with great people, waiting for baseball, beer, and blue sky.

Hey Bob, send us a picture, will ya?

Seeing what ticket prices are at spring training down in Peoria, we are better off staying here, listening to old Mariner game broadcasts with Dave Niehaus and Ron Fairly.

Hint: If you read Whidbey Weekly on-line, you can make the letters even bigger than my mouth is.

I can almost smell the stale beer now.

As we say in Dr. Cox’s waiting room in Freeland, “The eyes have it.”

Class Reunions Both of the high schools I attended are hawking me and our other classmates around the globe to attend this summer’s 50th class reunions.

I remember when Dad went back to Thayer, Missouri for his 50th.

Eleven of the fifteen in his graduating class of 1929 attended.

My two high schools, Upper Arlington, north of Columbus, and Oil City, north of Pittsburgh, probably had a total of 800-900 kids in the class of ‘65.

In fact, when they took prayer out of the schools my junior year, Mr. Houtz just put it in the drivers’ training cars.

I feel better already.

Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so, too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full.

Doors open at 7:00pm. Live music by PETE begins at 7:30pm and continues until 9:00pm (or a little later if the party is still rock ‘n’ rollin).

This is an all ages event. Suggested donation is $10-$20 at the door. Proceeds support the small non-profit that manages the 151 acres of publicly owned space for the Port of Coupeville. The collaborative effort between PETE and Greenbank Farm Management Group ROCKS the historic farm at the center of Whidbey Island and helps keep it moving forward as the community treasure it is.

The “Feed The Need” Food Drive will take place from 9:00am to 2:30pm on Monday, January 19. Volunteers will be collecting donations in Oak Harbor at Walmart, Albertsons, and Saar’s Marketplace. A semi-truck will also be parked on the corner of Highway 20 and SE Barrington Drive (across from Walgreens) and will serve as a drop-off point with volunteers collecting goods. This campaign encourages those already out doing their grocery shopping to consider adding a few items to donate.

The collected items will go to North Whidbey Help House and put food on the tables of area neighbors and friends. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Take Dr. King’s challenge and come out on January 19, 2015 to make an impact on someone’s life with the gift of food.

Post Workshop Event from 5:00pm to 8:00pm Fragile Waters Documentary Following the Ways of Whales workshop is an Orca Network fundraising event, with food and drink and discussion of the day’s workshop, and a special screening of the new documentary Fragile Waters, produced for Orca Network by filmmakers Rick Wood and Shari Macy, about Southern Resident Orcas and their need for salmon. Rick and Shari will attend the screening and hold a Q&A session after the movie.

This event will be held at the Nordic Lodge, 63 Jacobs Road, south of Coupeville. Cost is $25 per person.

Sound Waters Celebrates Twenty Years

“Feed The Need” Annual Food Drive

Many area families have difficulty not only meeting their basic needs, but their need for food as well. North Whidbey Help House is Oak Harbor’s community food bank, and provides supplemental and emergency food to those in need. From January 2014 to November 2014, North Whidbey Help House handed out 6,957 food baskets that fed 18,453 nearby residents. Of those people, 7,550 were children between the ages of 0-18. These numbers total 440,620 pounds of food distributed to local individuals and families.

Cost of the workshop is $35 ($25 for students/ seniors), and a hot lunch is available for purchase for an additional $10 (for those who pre-register by January 16, or on an as-available basis after this date).

Langley Middle School PTSA

For the past three years, United Way of Island County (UWIC) has partnered with “Feed The Need” for an annual food drive. The event aims to combat hunger by collecting non-perishable food items that will stock the shelves of North Whidbey Help House. The Food Drive is held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, and inspires Americans to volunteer and serve their community with ‘A Day ON, Not a Day Off.’

Environmental education displays and materials will be available throughout the day, including a table from Orca Network’s Langley Whale Center gift shop, with whale books, DVDs, CDs, field guides and more.

Orca Network’s annual Ways of Whales Workshop will be held Saturday, January 24, 9:30am until 4:30pm at the Coupeville Middle School Performing Arts Center, 501 S. Main St, Coupeville, followed by a special screening of the new documentary Fragile Waters at the Nordic Lodge south of Coupeville.

The 2015 Ways of Whales workshop features presentations on a wide variety of cetaceans, from the local North Puget Sound Gray whales who feed in Possession Sound and Saratoga Passage each spring, to the endangered Southern Resident Community of orcas, to thriving populations of Humpback whales in the Salish Sea and beyond and Blue whales off our coastal waters, to the acrobatic Pacific White Sided dolphins.

The day will feature presentations by the region’s top cetacean experts and advocates, including: Howard Garrett, Orca Network Southern Resident Orcas Update: J32/Rhapsody and J50; Lolita/Tokitae, and “Blackfish Effect” Updates John Durban, NOAA Fisheries Size matters: using photogrammetry to monitor length, growth and body condition for conservation of Resident killer whales John Calambokidis, Cascadia Research New insights into the abundance and movements of the larger baleen whales (blue, humpback and our local gray whales) off the US West Coast and potential human threats.

Erin Ashe, Oceans Initiative Pacific White Sided Dolphins of the Salish Sea and a special song from Environmental Songster Dana Lyons

Sound Waters 2015 will be held February 7 at South Whidbey High School. Celebrating 20 years, Sound Waters 2015 will feature the University of Washington’s Dr. John Delaney as the keynote speaker. He will talk about the recent installation of the world’s largest Internet connected ocean observatory off the west coast. Robots monitoring the ocean from the surface to the bottom will help us better understand the ocean as the ultimate life-support system for our planet.

Exhibits focusing on the 20-year history of Sound Waters will explain how Beach Watchers work with so many other organizations to protect our fragile ecosystem.

WSU Island County Beach Watchers 2015 Training Class Applications are now being accepted for the upcoming 2015 WSU Beach Watchers Training Class.

WSU Island County Beach Watchers are trained volunteers dedicated to protecting and preserving the marine environment of Puget Sound and the greater Salish Sea through research, education, outreach, and stewardship. Beach Watchers is a program of Washington State University Extension, connecting the resources of the University with the unique marine-focused needs and opportunities of local communities.

WSU Beach Watchers training is an exceptional opportunity to receive more than 100 hours of university-level instruction from experts in diverse fields. The training involves indoor educational sessions, guided field trips, and hands-on practice. Topics include watersheds and groundwater, marine biology and oceanography, salmon and nearshore habitats, climate change, forestry, waste reduction, recycling, sustainable living, native plants and animals, intertidal beach monitoring, coastal geology, and much more.

On Whidbey Island, training will take place on Wednesdays (and the occasional Thursday) from March 18 to April 29 and September 16 to October 29, 9:00am to 3:30pm.

On Camano Island, training will take place on Thursdays (and the occasional Wednesday) from March 19 to April 30 and September 17 to October 30, 9:00am to 3:30pm.

Classes from the two islands will meet together periodically for shared instruction.

A $100 registration fee covers training materials and expenses. The application deadline is February 20, 2015, so apply now. Don’t miss this exciting educational opportunity as well as the chance to join a fun community volunteer group.

Whidbey Community Chorus Begins Spring Season The Whidbey Community Chorus, under the direction of Chet Hansen, invites singers to join the chorus in preparing for its annual spring concerts. “Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales” will include John Rutter’s “Monday’s Child” and “Sing a Song of Sixpence,” “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic” by John Bratton, and a medley from “Into the Woods.”

Chorus registration will be held at 5:00pm on Sunday, January 25, at the First United Methodist Church, 1050 SE Ireland Street, Oak Harbor. Weekly practices are on Sunday evenings at the First United Methodist Church and concerts are scheduled for May 1 and 3.

Individual dues for the season are $30

Local Business News Patio Tea Room Now Open Lavender Wind in Coupeville has added a delightful, sunny Patio Tea Room to their shop in the historic Cushen House (c.1916) – a lovingly restored Craftsman bungalow on Coveland.

Kids in College?

Fill Out That FAFSA We’ve just begun the new year, but the next academic year is still months away. Nonetheless, if you have a child who will be attending college in the fall, it’s not too soon to start thinking about what might be a vital component of paying for his or her higher education: financial aid.

Specifically, to help ensure that your child doesn’t miss out on federal and state student grants, work-study and loans for the 2015-2016 school year, you’ll want to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. (You can start the application process by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov.)

Even if you have a fair amount of financial assets, you should probably fill out a FAFSA. In the first place, all parents receive an “asset protection allowance,” based on the age of the older parent. For two-parent families, this allowance generally shelters between $25,000 and $50,000 in assets from FAFSA considerations; for single parents, the range is typically between $6,000 and $10,000. The allowance may be higher for parents 65 and older. Furthermore, in determining your expected family contribution, FAFSA won’t look at your pension plan, your IRA or your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement account.

Those of your assets held outside retirement plans — the balances in your checking and savings accounts, CDs, investment real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and so on — will be counted in the FAFSA calculations, but as a parent, you will only be expected to contribute up to 5.64 percent of these assets, as opposed to assets held in your child’s name, which are usually assessed at 20 percent.

You may want to pay special attention to one particular asset — the 529 plan. A 529 plan is a popular college savings vehicle, and for a pretty good reason: The investment dollars you place in a 529 plan can grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals are free of federal and state taxes, provided the money is only used for higher education expenses. (The earnings portion of withdrawals used for other purposes may be fully taxable, and might incur a 10% penalty, as well.) Plus, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible on your state taxes. Like your other non-retirement assets, a 529 plan will be assessed at up to 5.64 percent for FAFSA purposes. Some families, seeking to totally keep their 529 plan assets out of aid calculations, ask the grandparents to own the account.

This could be a problem, though, because while the grandparents’ 529 plan won’t be reported as an asset on FAFSA, withdrawals from the plan will be treated as untaxed income to the beneficiary (i.e., the grandchild) on the next year’s FAFSA — and that can have a big impact on financial aid, a much bigger impact, in fact, than if the 529 plan was listed as a parental asset.

Consequently, you might want to ask the grandparent to award ownership of the 529 plan to you. However, some state plans don’t allow this change, so the grandparent might have to transfer the money to a different state’s plan before giving up ownership.

In any case, be aware of these issues when you tackle the FAFSA. And don’t delay in filling it out. Colleges have a closing date for accepting financial aid applications — and that’s one deadline you won’t want to miss.

Sights & Sounds We’ll begin this weeks Sights and Sounds with the OutCast Productions in Langley. A press release submitted by Patricia Duff.

The season kicks off with “Nickel and Dimed” by Joan Holden, based on the non-fiction book “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America” by Barbara Ehrenreich. The show will be directed by K. Sandy O’Brien and opens March 6.

Here’s a break-down of the entire season which runs from March to October.

March 6 to 21 “Nickel and Dimed” by Joan Holden, based on the non-fiction book “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America” by Barbara Ehrenreich, and directed by K. Sandy O’Brien.

Can a middle-aged, middle-class woman survive, when she suddenly has to make beds all day in a hotel and live on $7 an hour? Maybe. But one $7-an-hour job won’t pay the rent: she’ll have to do back-to-back shifts, as a chambermaid and a waitress. This isn’t the first surprise for acclaimed author Barbara, who set out to research low-wage life firsthand, confident she was prepared for the worst. Barbara Ehrenreich’s best-seller about her odyssey is vivid and witty, yet always deeply sobering. Joan Holden’s stage adaptation is a focused, comic epic shadowed with tragedy. Barbara is prepared for hard work but not, at 55, for double shifts and nonstop aches and pains; for having to share tiny rooms, live on fast food because she has no place to cook, beg from food pantries, gulp handfuls of Ibuprofen because she can’t afford a doctor; for failing, after all that, to make ends meet; or for constantly having to swallow humiliation.

May 8 to 23 “In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play” by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Ned Farley.

In a seemingly perfect, well-to-do Victorian home, proper gentleman and scientist Dr. Givings has innocently invented an extraordinary new device for treating “hysteria” in women (and occasionally men): the vibrator. Adjacent to the doctor’s laboratory, his young and energetic wife tries to tend to their newborn daughter—and wonders exactly what is going on in the next room. When a new “hysterical” patient and her husband bring a wet nurse and their own complicated relationship into the doctor’s home, Dr. and Mrs. Givings must examine the nature of their own marriage, and what it truly means to love someone.

July 10 to 25 “The Pillowman” by Martin McDonagh; directed by Katie Woodzick.

With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka and the Brothers Grimm, “The Pillowman” centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art.

Sept. 18 to Oct. 3 “Looped” by Matthew Lombardo – in the Northwest premiere and directed by Sean Brennan.

Looped tells the story of internationally celebrated actress Tallulah Bankhead as she is called into a sound studio in 1965 to re-record (or “loop”) one line of dialogue for what would be her last film, the dreadful Die, Die My Darling. Southern, but by no means a belle, Bankhead was known for her wild partying and convention-defying exploits that outshone even today’s celebrity bad girls. Given her inebriated state (and inability to loop the line perfectly), what ensues is a hilarious showdown between an uptight and conservative sound editor, Danny Miller, and the outrageous star.

Shall We Dance?

With the popularity of dance shows on TV and new, fast moving and exciting dance-based exercise classes available, a lot of people have wondered if ‘dancing’ is truly a good way to lose weight. What are the benefits?

Let’s start by looking at ballroom dance. In doing some research on the history of ballroom, Wikipedia defines it as “a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the world.� It also says “Ballroom Dance� refers most often to the ten dances of International Ballroom (Standard) and International Latin.�

I spoke with Dan Branscum of Dan’s Classic Ballroom & Moonlight Dance Cruises and he had this to say: “Ballroom dancing is good for all ages but it is the best activity for people ages 45+. It’s low impact on our bodies, which is key for those of us who are over 45. It is a very good workout; builds core strength, balance and is a great aerobic activity. There are a few activities couples can do well into our later years. It is important to note that if you want to dance, technique and skills are best learned from a certified dance instructor to minimize injuries.�

Moving on to a different type of dance class, I chatted with Cheridan Eck, a local Zumba, BodyPUMP, BodyFLOW instructor who teaches all over the island at Thrive, classes held at Coupeville Elementary School and at Island Athletic. Zumba is a Latin style dance fitness class for all ages. I mean, all ages. She said there are even “Baby Zumba� classes. I guess you are never too young to start physical activity. Cheridan said Zumba is a great cardio workout that can be tailored to each person. She likes to start the classes out at a low impact but go higher. Now if you have limitations (i.e.: knee issues) she said she can modify the moves and they can be done all low impact to accommodate the limitations.

Zumba music is exciting and energetic – the classes are interactive and everyone enjoys themselves, laughing and interacting. “It’s a really good time,� she said. “Wearing loose fitting clothing is great for Zumba too. Gives you more freedom of movement.�

Opposite of Zumba is BodyPUMP where clothing should be a closer fit to “see your lines.�

Classes like BodyPUMP and BodyFLOW can only be taught at a facility licensed to have the classes such as Thrive and Island Athletic. Where this type of exercise is good is it compliments aerobic dance classes. Cheridan recommends for the most optimal benefits you should do cardio 3x a week; strength/muscle technique classes 2x a week and intermix a couple of classes like Yoga or BodyFLOW where you are stretching. BodyPUMP classes focus on strength training. BodyFLOW is a combination of Tai Chi, Pilates and Yoga – encouraging strength and flexibility.

Lastly I want to talk about “dance� classes such as tap, ballet, jazz, etc. Opening soon in the Traders Village/Log Cabin Building on Midway is a new dance studio 5,6,7,8. Trent Oman, owner and dance instructor said, “With any dance, the #1 benefit is FUN! When you are having fun you are at the top of your game. I started with Country and Western and moved up from there. Dance teaches flexibility and helps you develop the opposite side of your brain, which helps you with coordination and your balance improves. You are strengthening your core while having fun. Plus all forms of dance give you a social atmosphere. No matter your age, as you take classes you make new friends. You grow up with them and find dance can take you to places you wouldn’t think you would go. It’s just fun.�

Let’s Dish! with Kae Harris

Comfort Foods; More than a just a meal With flu season being in full swing and the days becoming colder, I think it’s safe to say many of us are indulging in comfort foods. Whatever this may be for you, I’m willing to bet your meals, as of late, have included at least one soup, stew or something really rich in taste.

We tend to associate comfort foods with dishes that are hearty, filling and stick to your ribs; baked macaroni and cheese, beef stew, chicken noodle soup, French toast casserole etc. The common theme being they are all warm and satisfying. They are foods that kick a bad cold to the curb and shoo away the down in the dumps feeling.

One of the most common comfort foods, and the first one that comes to mind with us being in the heart of cold and flu season, is chicken noodle soup. Most of us love this soup. It may bring good memories of times past, rushing to the forefront of our minds. When a good portion of the population in the U.S. has a cold or the flu, this comfort dish seems to be the ‘go to’ remedy to lift our spirits and warm us from the inside out. There is, however, some scientific evidence to suggest that chicken noodle soup does not just have a placebo effect. When you break down the components of the soup and take a look at the ingredients, each one has its

own ‘super power’ that may aid in easing cold and flu symptoms. Think of all the nutrients in the vegetables. Regardless of what vegetables are in the soup, they still contain vitamins and minerals that up this dish’s antioxidant level.

The protein provided by the chicken purportedly helps with immune system response to infection (whether viral or bacterial), and the broth provides some hydration, which plays a major role in helping to fight off illness. The heat from the actual soup can also help a little to decongest a stuffy nose, so all around this has to be one of the best comfort foods out there, whether one is sick or not. Chicken noodle soup is not the only go-to comfort food, the health benefits of any soup with added protein, vegetables, herbs and spices, are what makes them potentially good for you.

For as long as people have been around, herbs have been used to treat a variety of ailments.

Ginger, for example, is known as a natural blood purifier. This root is also excellent for helping to break up coughs and treat nausea. Since it is known in botanical medicine to help the body generate more heat, ginger is a fantastic aid for a lethargic digestive system. It’s therefore easy for us to draw the line between herbs in soups or stews and helping us feel better when in the throes of illness.

Now comfort foods don’t have to just be soups and stews. When I say comfort foods I mean

what foods bring you to that place reminiscent of happy times from your past? All over the world different cultures have different ideas of comfort food, in terms of how it brings friends and family together or harkens the people back in time a little, differs from place to place. Indian comfort food, for example, is quite different from anything I’ve ever eaten to ward off a cold or a bad day but there is no doubt it can, and totally does, excel in the ‘feel good’ food area.

From samosas crammed with potato, vegetables and spices all wrapped tightly in a blanket of deep fried pastry and dipped in chutney, to gulab jamun a popular milk based dumpling steeped in rose flavored syrup, Indian comfort food absolutely kicks the comfort food bar up a notch.

Chicken Noodle Soup 1-tablespoon olive oil 3-4 stalks of celery chopped 4 medium/large carrots chopped 1/2 of an onion finely chopped 1 teaspoon minced garlic fresh parsley roughly chopped (as much as is to your liking) 3-4 chicken stock cubes 2 teaspoons flour 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts 1/2 to 1 cup of egg noodles.

A little farther over in the same area of the world, a pretty popular and staple comfort food for Indonesians is pisang goreng, or fried banana. This, when coupled with a cup of coarsely ground black coffee, is apparently the epitome of satisfaction. Traveling back over the Atlantic, Canadian poutine dishes - a heap of french fries, topped with cheese curds and smothered in gravy - could pick up even the weariest person.

Comfort food serves us a little more than a helping of chicken, carrots and celery or syrup, milk and pastry. It serves us sentiments of family and bonds. It can also add a little nostalgia to the bowl. In fact, according to Merriam Webster’s dictionary, comfort food is defined as “food that is satisfying because it is prepared in a simple or traditional way and reminds you of home, family, or friends.” I remember when I was little, I would visit my grandmother and grandfather, and my grandfather would always make a big pot of goulash. I loved it. Not only for its taste, but for what it did for us as a family. It brought us together. My aunts, uncles and cousins would all visit and there would be reminiscing, laughter, and embarrassing stories. So comfort food is not merely a meal. There is so much more that goes into it.

I’m curious to know what everyone’s idea of comfort food is? What dishes make everything just right again and keeps dreariness at bay?

Well my absolute favorite comfort food has to

Boil the chicken breasts in water until completely cooked. Cube the cooked chicken and set aside.

In a large pot, sauté the celery, onion, carrots, and garlic until they are ever so slightly browned.

This is supposed to bring out their flavor a little more. Add the cooked chicken cubes, sauté on medium heat for 2 minutes. Add enough water to cover the chicken and vegetables. Add the chicken stock cubes, and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for approximately 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Mix the 2 teaspoons of flour with a little water to form a watery paste with no lumps. Add this to the soup pot, and bring to a boil. The flour should thicken the soup broth a little. Add egg noodles and cook for approximately 15 minutes or until they are tender. Finally add the chopped parsley and remove the soup from heat.

Just a note: You can use frozen mixed vegetables to do this, or any other herb or spice you find enjoyable. Go with low sodium chicken stock cubes or by all means, if you make your own use homemade broth. When it comes to cooking it’s all pretty much subjective, so whatever ingredients taste good to you or are good for you, those are exactly the ones you should use!

This documentary focuses on the hardy folks who live there, as well as the continent’s startling natural beauty.  (Unrated • 1 hr. 31 min.)

The Babadook: A horror movie that is both actually frightening and critically lauded? This movie is like a cinematic unicorn–if the unicorn were a creepy creature from a children’s book out to terrorize a single mother and her troubled son, that is.  (Unrated • 1 hr. 34 min.)

Big Eyes: Thanks to some hacking scandal, the only movie any of us is hearing about this holiday season is the one that won’t be released (except it’s going to be released now, I guess?). Unfortunate because the inimitable and always interesting Tim Burton has a movie out, and it’s the story of a giant art fraud, the people who perpetuated it and an artist who finally found the courage to come into her own.  (PG-13 • 1 hr. 46 min.)

Big Hero 6: I confess that each time an animated adventure is released, my main interest in it can be summed up by a single question: Pixar or not? However, I may have to revise this inquiry to include Disney, as they’ve upped their animation game of late ("Frozen," I’m looking at you) and this tale of a boy, his endearing robotic companion and their crimefighting capabilities will only bolster the House of Mouse.  (PG • 1 hr. 33 min.)

Birdman: We all love a story in which art imitates life, and this one’s a doozy. Michael Keaton plays a man who turns his back on a superhero franchise in order to pursue projects he finds to be more artistically fulfilling, with unpredictable, sometimes hilarious, surprisingly touching results. Keaton turns in a careerdefining performance, one the Academy will be hard-pressed to ignore.  (R • 1 hr. 59 min.)

Exodus: Gods and Kings: I’m all for this new trend that sees Hollywood taking biblical stories and not telling them in biblical fashion (see also: Darren Aronofsky’s "Noah"). Except when they’re an unholy mess of bad casting and worse CGI, that is.  (PG-13 • 2 hrs.

The Gambler: Although this movie is stylish and features yet another solid performance by the always watchable Mark Wahlberg, it does not manage to live up to the cool 1974 James Caan classic from which it is remade.

Feel free to use this film as an example of why Hollywood should stop mining its own history and come up with an original idea every now and again.  (R • 1 hr. 41 min.)

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: Well, the damn Hobbits walked for so damn long and through so many damn movies I no longer care that they finally get to stage a big damn fight in this damn finale.  (PG-13 • 2 hrs. 24 min.)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay–Part 1: Katniss is back, and this time she aims to stir up a little revolution. Or part one of a revolution, at least.  (PG-13 • 2 hrs. 5 min.)

Inherent Vice: A movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin based on a monster of a totally unfilmable book by Thomas Pynchon?

It used to be darker and more challenging.

After retiring from the Navy, Bill worked for Oak Harbor School district in the grounds and maintenance departments. He was active as Chief of the Silver Lake Fire department with North Whidbey Fire and Rescue. He was also a member of Oak Harbor Elks #2362 and was Wagon Master of Circle Up Camping Club for many years. Also, as a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, he dedicated his life to his faith, family and his friends.

Life Tributes

Bill died peacefully January 4, 2015 in his home where he had lived for over 50 years.

His wife Betty and children wish to thank everyone for their comforting words and prayers at this time.

Funeral Mass for William “Bill” Leitch were celebrated Saturday, January 10, 2015 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Rev. Paul Pluth J.C.L. as Celebrant. Rites of Interment with full military honors followed at Maple Leaf Cemetery. A reception for family and friends followed at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge.

ROLLO WILLIAM SPENCER Rollo William Spencer passed away unexpectedly January 2, 2015. Rollo was born September 13, 1935 to Jesse and Arthella Spencer in Escalante, Utah. He attended Weber County High School and, upon graduation, gave up a full-ride college scholarship to join the U.S. Air Force. After serving his country for 8 years, he attended the University of Santa Clara and received his Master’s degree in Physics.

Rollo married Sylvia, the love of his life in 1960 and shared 54 years of love and laughter. She followed him from Utah to New York and California, where he had an extensive career in technology in the Silicon Valley. He began his career at IBM as an engineer and continued to excel in many companies, with increasing responsibilities, including CDC, Tandem, Zilog, NASA, Ames Research and culminating his career as General Manager of Devices for Apple, leading the forefront of the tablet technology.

Rollo and Sylvia eventually settled in Coupeville in 1993. Rollo began his second career in the family business, working at Holmes Harbor Cellars as the tasting room manager.

Rollo is survived by his loving wife Sylvia and daughters Michelle Moch (Brian Loomis), Theresa Martinez (Greg) and twins, Melanie Lemons (Loren) and Monica Spencer.

Rollo was also the adored grandfather of six grandchildren, Spencer (21) Garrett (19), Dane, (18) Allie (18), Carly (15) and Michael (7). Three brothers Gary, Rodney (twin) and Stephen Spencer also survive. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cherie Hoerman and Arta Lamb.

Funeral Mass for Rollo Spencer was celebrated Thursday, January 8, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Coupeville, with Rev. Paul Pluth, J.C.L. as Celebrant. Rites of Burial followed at Sunnyside Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U. S. Air Force. A reception was held in the Parish Hall. ALAN BOISSONNEAULT Alan Boissonneault died at his home in Oak Harbor January 6, 2015 surrounded by his wife, sons and brother. Alan was born January 15, 1943 in Nashua, NH, the son of Andrea (Gilbert) and Ernest Boissonneault both of Nashua NH. He attended St. Louis Elementary School and High School in Nashua, NH Alan enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1960 at the age of 17. He completed boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois and was then stationed at Saufley Field Pensacola, Florida. He moved on to Naval Station, Keflavik, Iceland, NAS South Weymouth, Mass, NARTU Alameda, CA, VR-51 DET/VP69/VAQ-137/Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department and VA-52 at NAS Whidbey Island, WA Alan served aboard John F. Kennedy CV-67, Carl Vinson CVN-70, and USS Ranger CV-61. He retired as a CWO-3 after 30 honorable years with the U.S. Navy.

Following retirement, he worked for the Kuwait Air Force from 1991-1995. He then worked for the U.S. Post Office from 1995 until his retirement in 2005.

Alan met Therese Beland in 1962 and they were married at Saint Louis Church June 6, 1964. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014.

Alan is survived by his wife Therese and 2 sons, Kevin Alan Boissonneault of Leonardtown, MD and Derek Alan Boissonneault of Oak Harbor, WA and one brother John Boissonneault of Arlington, WA. Funeral Mass for Alan Boissonneault was celebrated Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Saint Augustine Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, WA. Interment will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

WILLIAM J. “Bill” LEITCH William James Leitch was born March 28, 1931, the second child of George and Cecelia Messer Leitch. Bill was born in a stone house and was delivered by his maternal grandmother, Rose Kuntz Messer, near Bowman, North Dakota. The family came to Washington in 1937 and settled in the Yakima Valley.

Bill joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 and married Betty Lease April 11, 1953 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Yakima. Bill served, chronologically, in San Diego, Japan, on the USS Salisbury Sound, at NAS China Lake California, on the USS Yorktown, in Korea, at NAS Pensacola Florida, NAS Whidbey Island, in Vietnam, and retired at Miramar California in June 1967. He served as a Chief Photographer with movies, ground, and aerial film work. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Sixth Award Medal. He also received The “Winged S” Air Rescue Emblem Certificate.

Bill and Betty enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and living on their “HaHa Farm” raising their four children during their 62 years together.

Their surviving children are Belinda (Robert) Mower, Liberty Lake, WA, Tony (deceased wife Carol Berner), Arlington, WA, Lauri (Stephen) Brown, Issaquah, WA, and Mary McGee, Auburn, WA. Surviving grandchildren are Charity Turpen, Jason Mower, Sara Mower, Kristi Deehan, Stacey Miller, Andrew Leitch, Lucas Brown, Hannah Rose Brown and Hayley McGee. Great grandchildren are Lexie Mower and Zoey Turpen; Ava Grace, Charlie, and Samuel Miller; Madison Mower; and Carter and Beatrice Deehan. Bill’s surviving siblings are Richard (Velma) Leitch, Moxee, WA, Floyd Leitch, Yakima, WA, Patricia Murphy, Yakima, WA, Dennis (Diana) Leitch, Higlands Ranch, CO, Larry (Dianna) Leitch, Yakima, WA, and Yvonne (Virgil) Harper, Terrebonne, OR. Two step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren also survive. Bill and Betty also had twin sons William and Alan who are deceased.

Travis Edwin Henderson Travis Edwin Henderson, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away Monday, December 15, 2014 at the age of 77.

Travis was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1937 to David Dowling Henderson and Hazel Leona Gravatt. Their family farmed and experienced their share of hardships, including a house fire that left them living separately for years while they rebuilt.

Travis was a Navy SEAL and served four tours in Vietnam. Although he never discussed the details, he was very proud of his service and wore a Vietnam Vet or Navy SEAL hat wherever he went. He was a lifetime member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars organization.

He lived and worked in Colorado, Texas, and Florida after leaving active duty service.

He was a life-long bachelor. Although he never married, he played an active role in the lives of his siblings and their families, and those of his dear friends. His kindness, generosity, love, and humor touched many, many lives.

Travis was known to have wanderlust and he traveled as often as he could. He was an avid naturalist, outdoorsman and photographer, and he dreamed of working for the National Geographic Society. He also enjoyed reading, listening to classical and jazz music, and walking. His best friend was his brother, William “Doc” Henderson.

He was predeceased by his brothers William Lewis Henderson (2001) and David Donald Henderson (2013), and his sister Dorothy Elizabeth Henderson (Bashline) (2007). He is survived by his sisters Joyce Hazel Henderson, Helen Ruth Henderson (McCracken), and Catherine Victoria Henderson (Holy), and his nieces Sara Hudson, Lisa Henderson, Marie Byars, Denise Markowski, and his nephew William Henderson II, great-nieces and –nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews. All will miss him dearly.

I think it’s safe to say just about everyone isn’t happy about getting a cold. But colds happen all the time. While most of the time a cold is just inconvenient and relatively no big deal, they can lead to other viruses like sinusitis, bronchitis and even pneumonia.

This usually happens because our immune systems are weakened from fighting the cold. Simple research (and a good dose of common sense) shows there are some practical ways to avoid the common cold.

We’ve all heard to wash your hands. One should also try not to rub your eyes or nose (if you haven’t recently washed your hands), as those are two points where the virus can enter your body. The other obvious one is don’t stick your fingers in your mouth. Ever see the fantasy movie Osmosis Jones (Warner Bros 2001) with Chris Rock and Bill Murry?

I am not trying to suggest being worried all the time about germs just suggesting you wash your hands regularly or take other precautions to limit your chances of contracting the cold virus. Other simple preventative measures are to make good lifestyle choices such as drinking enough water, take your vitamins and get a good night’s sleep. Ever notice when you “burn your candle at both ends” is when you usually tend to get sick?

If you should catch a cold, a common thing most of us have heard, is to drink plenty of fluids. Water thins the mucus and makes it easier for your body to get rid of it. If you do have congestion, try to avoid dairy products.

Dairy actually can exacerbate your symptoms.

Most importantly, if you are sick, stay home and rest. Don’t share it with co-workers or the general public. Some other natural things you can do are drink herbal tea with lemon and, if you aren’t allergic to it, add honey.

One of the research articles I read said honey before bed helps you cough less and sleep

better. I’ve actually made a tea from just honey and lemon with hot water. It’s surprisingly soothing.

If you can get essential oils, pure oils or products made with pure oils, those can also be beneficial. There is a Swiss based company who has a thyme cream that when you rub it on the bottom of your feet (yes feet!) it helps to settle your lungs when you are coughing.

Eucalyptus oil in a bath is also a good way to clear sinuses. Of course, before trying any oils be sure you don’t have an allergy to them. If you are lucky enough to not have an allergy, essential oils can really help when you aren’t feeling well.

A steam humidifier helps to ease congestion or you can try a Neti pot to help irrigate your nose. I recommend doing it in the shower if you are going to try that route. My mother used to have me gargle with warm salt water when I had a sore throat, which is another goodie. Of course, sleep with an extra pillow, elevating your head to help you breathe better and even applying a “hot” pack around your congested sinus can give a little relief. My “hot packs” simply consist of a damp, but nicely warmed, washcloth.

Before taking any supplements or herbal remedies, you should always check with your doctor, a naturopath or a trained specialist in the modality you are considering first.

If you are on medications for other health issues sometimes supplements can conflict with them so always double check. We are fortunate on this island to have some great homeopathic healers. You can always check WIHAA.com for a list of practitioners of various natural modalities, too.

Chicken Little & the Astrologer

Last week we ever so lightly touched a cautious finger on the Carrington Event, the colossal superstorm of the Sun in the year 1859.

Ever so lightly, because the subject matter is fraught with (here’s to you, pun lovers) shock potential. Recall that blood red auroras in 1859 turned night into day worldwide. Recall, too, that somehow those dancing auroras made the Victorian era’s battery-powered telegraph system crackle like Thor’s Rice Krispies and burst into flame. And lastly, recall how, even with all batteries disconnected, telegraph messages were still sent and received—usable electricity from the sky! One might reasonably expect curiosity to have gripped the best minds in science like a polyester skirt with static cling, riding up in ways annoying and embarrassing, demanding attention at times inappropriate and inconvenient, refusing despite all manner of pulling, tugging and squirming, to relax and let go. This never happened. Curiosity regarding auroras was plough-horse slow to surface in the Victorian mind. What happened when curiosity finally did take hold is a subject worthy of further exploration. What happened is where the shock potential arises. What happened should not have happened in a sane and just world. But it did happen.

Life was slower for Victorians. Forty years after the Carrington Event, the state of horse and buggy science was still firmly under the apple tree with Newton back in the 17th Century, watching apples drop to the ground while scribbling notes about gravity. Then, in 1873, one man realized that, strudels, Danishes, cobblers and crisps notwithstanding, there is limit to how far apples—and gravity—could take the scientific world. The man was James Clerk Maxwell and he did something that put his name on the same level as Newton or Einstein: He published his two-volume treatise on electricity and magnetism.

Electricity and magnetism—the two seem to go everywhere together, hand in hand, like Jack and Jill going up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Interest in them had already tickled the Victorian mind, to be sure. But it was Maxwell who, with his twenty equations on electricity and magnetism, introduced the world to the concept of itself as fields of energy, rather than points of matter. The difference is the difference between “giddy-up!” and “Scotty, beam me up!” After Maxwell, the old gray mare wasn’t what she used to be.

Only six years after publishing his famous equations, Maxwell died of cancer. Here, the shock potential rises sharply. Remove your metal jewelry and keep your feet and hands dry.

Barely had the sod settled over Maxwell’s grave before his equations underwent revision.

Within two years of his passing, twelve of Maxwell’s equations were combined into four.

Depending on what really took place in that reduction–needed simplification, or something else–the revision of Maxwell’s equations may be the scientific stumbling place where “Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after.” Many are those who suspect that with the revisions, something crucial was lost or hidden. They point to the revisions as the place where “Scotty, beam me up!” was reduced to “Giddy-up 2.0”—no longer horse and buggy, but not quite space age. Maxwell’s equations may have been behind the famous remark by the former head of the highly secretive Lockheed Skunkworks, Ben Rich: “We found an error in the equations and now

After Maxwell and his posthumously altered equations, another generation of sleepy Victorian scientists continued to follow the old gray mare. Then, with the 20th Century barely more than a hearty crow of the barnyard cock away, someone finally roused up, looked in the mirror and began to search the haystack atop his head for a part line. Someone with a suspicion that auroras were connected to the Sun and that the nature of the connection was electrical, and that all of it was bound somehow to Earth’s magnetism. That someone was Norwegian physicist Kristian Birkeland.

The seed of Maxwell’s equations had sprouted in Birkeland’s thinking, leading to Birkeland’s most controversial idea, which was that space was not empty. He believed it to be teeming with electricity that linked Earth directly to the Sun. When Birkeland undertook his study of the aurora, it was one of the last unsolved mysteries of the natural world. At least two dozen theories presumed to explain why the northern night sky periodically assumed hues rivaling the most marvelous Easter eggs. In Iceland, auroras were thought to be the unhappy spirits of the dead. In Norway, the souls of warriors long dead, but still fighting. To the ancient Vikings auroras were the Valkyries, female messengers of the Norse god Odin, riding out from Valhalla, the heaven of warriors, their spears and shields flashing in auroral luminescence, to mark who would next die in battle. Today, the Valkyries would not visit. They would Tweet: “dOOd, U R SOL. 2moro UD. STBU! J/K. WVLU! BCNUS, 6Y!” (“Dude, you are s*** out of luck. Tomorrow you die. It sucks to be you! Just kidding. We Valkyries love you! Be seein’ you soon, sexy!” The Norse warriors of olde can be glad to have lived when they did.

The aurora has a long tradition as an indicator of weather. Much movement, with the aurora lights playing, igniting and extinguishing, foretold windy weather. Auroras making an archway from northwest to southeast without much movement meant conditions would be cold and clear. Bright auroras moving to the south meant mild weather, as did years with few auroras. Dramatic light shows warned of storms and fishermen would not go to sea the next day.

Most ominous of all was the blood red aurora, which northern folklore said portended not only bad weather, but war, famine and strife.

Scientists, including Birkeland, scoffed at this.

Yet, the Carrington Event’s red aurora of 1859 was followed a year later by the American Civil War. In 1938 another blood red aurora, viewable as far south as Spain, saw Hitler annex Austria little more than a month afterward.

Hitler’s invasion of Poland to begin WWII occurred the year following.

In 1899, as Birkeland undertook his winterlong study of the aurora from the top of a windswept mountain far above the Arctic Circle, doubters were shaking their heads. In their minds, Birkeland was being foolhardy in the extreme. Even the hardy Lapp reindeer herders had never tried to winter in such a place. Adding weight to their doubts, a grisly knife assassination of the Empress of Austria and Hungary happened just as Birkeland was making final preparations. As if that were not omen enough, the billowing sky overhead was a flamenco dancer’s skirt—in red.
