Salmon Anglers Might be too Good Hopefully by now, most of you have had the opportunity to put a few salmon in your fridge or freezer. The season started off with a bang especially for those who have a boat. Although there are humpies making their way around the island, I do believe we have not seen the big run yet. Without any substantial rain, local rivers remain low and warm. This has caused the WDFW to set some emergency closures and to implement what they call “Hoot-owl” restrictions. These restrictions limit fishing in certain rivers to between midnight and 2PM essentially eliminating pressure on fish during the hottest times of the day. The rivers in the north Puget Sound affected are as follows, according to the WDFW website: Region 4 – North Puget Sound Closed to fishing: • Raging River (King Co.) from the mouth upstream.

• Skykomish River (Snohomish Co.) from the mouth upstream closed to all fishing, except the section around Reiter Ponds remains open from the Gold Bar/Big Eddy Access (Hwy. 2 Bridge) upstream to the confluence of the North and South forks.

• Wallace River (Snohomish Co.). From the mouth upstream including all tributaries.

• Stillaguamish River (Skagit/Snohomish Co.) From Marine Drive upstream including the North and South forks and all tributaries.

• South Fork Nooksack (Whatcom Co.) From the mouth to Skookum Creek, and from Wanlick Creek to headwaters including Wanlick and all tributaries.

• Suiattle River (Skagit Co.) Tributaries Buck, Downey and Sulpher Creeks.

Hoot-owl restrictions: • North Fork Skykomish River (Snohomish Co.) From the mouth upstream including all tributaries.

• South Fork Skykomish River (Snohomish/ King Co.) From Sunset Falls upstream and all tributaries, including the Beckler, Foss, Miller and Rapid rivers and their tributaries.

• Sauk River (Skagit/Snohomish Co.) Above the Suiattle River including the North Fork to the falls and the South Fork to headwaters.

• Samish River (Skagit Co.) From I-5 to headwaters, and Friday Creek upstream.

A major change which occurred this past Sunday was the closure of Marine area 9 to the retention of Chinook salmon. This closure is due to reaching the allocated catch quota of 2,483 chinooks. It was reported by July 23, 1,953 fish had already been harvested. An impressive opening which might have been a little too good if anglers managed to catch 80% of the quota in just over a week. Maybe next year they will change the limit to one chinook to keep the season open longer. I know some will disagree with me but it would give anglers more opportunity to catch them.

After talking with some fellow anglers, I believe the big push of fish has yet to arrive around the island. Areas where we would normally be catching decent numbers of chinook have produced only a hand full. I spoke with the fish checker at Cornet Bay this past Sunday and she said by 3pm she had only counted 5 chinooks and later on a couple more had been added to the tally. This tells me the big migration of fish has yet to happen. I was afraid this would be the case with the unusually warm and dry summer we are having. The little bit of rain we received over the weekend will hopefully pull some fish out of the ocean, but as of the writing of this it doesn’t look like it's going to happen

soon. Time will tell but I am keeping my fingers crossed some of the big boys show up soon and of course the large amount of silvers as well.

Crabbers are doing great this year. The limitation of commercial access to some of the prime spots around the island has produced some quality Dungeness for almost anyone who can get their pots in the water. At almost a month into the season you may have to work just a tad harder to get your limit but they are still there to be caught. Some of the crab we were getting at the beginning were pushing 7-inches. Nice big and meaty delicacies from the deep. Now is a good time to get out there and find some of those “secret spots” or just continue to go where you know you can get your limits.

With the warm weather returning and no beach closures currently in Island County according to the Washington Department of health, clam digging is always a fun way to stay cool and harvest a nice dinner to boot. This coming weekend is going to have some great tides with lows around mid-day and around -2.0 feet. Always check before you go at: www.doh. wa.gov/CommunityandEnvironment/Shellfish/ BeachClosures.

Here are the tide times for Penn Cove this weekend: • Friday 31 July – Low -2.3 at 11:35 AM • Saturday 1 August – Low -2.1 at 12:19 PM • Sunday 2 August – Low -1.6 at 1:04 PM As you can see, the tides look great so take the family out and have a great day. Be sure to put on some sunscreen. While the air feels cool you can get a sun burn pretty quickly.

One question I am asked often is what I do with all the humpies I catch. There are really only two ways I prepare them. I either smoke them or can them. I usually give a lot of my smoked salmon away and share some of my canned salmon as well.

Smoking is a relatively long and messy process that involves preparing, brining and smoking the fish. Brines can be either liquid or dry (which I prefer) and usually include common ingredients in some ratio of salt and sugar. Other ingredients can include spices, honey, soy sauce, and molasses. Look online if you don’t have your own recipe and you will find a bunch of them.

Pick one that appeals to you and give it a try.

Canning, I feel, is a lot easier to do. Be sure to prep your jars as you would any canning you would do. Salmon preparation can be as simple or as complex as you like. Some just chunk up the whole salmon and pack it in either pint or half pint jars. I tend to fillet, skin and remove the ribs prior to putting the meat into jars.

One of my favorite methods is to pack a jar with enough humpy meat to leave a 1 inch head space. I add a half teaspoon of sea salt (kosher or canning salt works well too) and 3-4 jalapenos rings, ¼ inch thick on top. Seal the jars and pressure can the pint jars at 10-pounds of pressure for 90 minutes. The salmon has enough moisture and oil in it that it combines with the jalapenos and gives the meat an awesome taste without being overly hot. Enjoy a jar with some crackers or prepare it as you would tuna fish or salmon patties and you will be in for one tasty surprise.

If you had told me three months ago that it would be the last week of July by now, I would have said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;No way, it is still April.â&#x20AC;?

And, it would have brought us to this, another corny joke from Gene, my 'ol law school roommate. Gene has more jokes in his head than Amazon has packages out for delivery.

Get Ready Some years ago, there was a man by the name of Leroy Walter Macaulay, or Lee Wally, as he was known by friends and family, who lived in a clearing in the mountains, just outside of Highlands, North Carolina. He lived in that clearing with his wife, Mary Sue, and his son, Cane. Lee Wally made his living making moonshine in the still of the night, while his wife spent most of her time raising Cane.

Now, Lee Wally had a habit that drove everyone to distraction. He carried paper and pencil with him at all times, and he used them to draw aimlessly throughout the day.

He drew small designs, circles, squares, zigzag lines, etc. He not only drew when he was relaxing, he also scribbled when he was talking with his neighbors and his family. In short, Lee Wally had a compulsion to draw, and he could not stop.

Mary Sue had long since come to terms with Lee Wallyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s addiction to scribbling, and the neighbors also had learned to ignore it. Cane, on the other hand, was terribly bothered by his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s compulsion. It nearly drove him crazy. He just could not stand to watch his pa, Lee Wally, doodle all day.

Mail Call One of the nice things about modern society is our postal service is still in business. With the Internet driving most communications, via electronic mail in its various forms, most all of us only get real mail delivered that is termed â&#x20AC;&#x153;junk.â&#x20AC;?

According to Wikipedia's dictionary, junk mail is â&#x20AC;&#x153;any mail or letters that are not welcome or solicited, and typically sent in bulk, especially of a commercial nature, such as advertising circulars and form letters.â&#x20AC;? That definition gives me pause as it might include my Christmas card mailings in August.

Apparently, the Langley post office pundits consider my mail to locals to be junk. I address the envelopes with the addresses of the businesses as listed in the local phone book. For example, if I write a thank you note to Carol or Kiley at the Island County Fairgrounds, I address the envelope to them at their location on 819 Camano, in Langley, 98260. However, the next week, my envelope will most assuredly be returned with a yellow sticker and some illegible letters indicating something only a postal employee would understand. The reason for the returnâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;no mail receptacle at that address.

Well, what a way to find out the folks at the ICF have a post office box. Instead of putting the Fair mail in the post office box, which has been the same box number for many moons, the dutiful government employees return my thank you note to my post office box in Freeland.

Why? Well, by returning my stamped envelope with lines and scribbles on the front, I now have to buy another stamp, and another envelope, to re-send the already late card of appreciation. Additionally, the paperwork I have initiated will generate more, thus assuring job security for those postal employees who prefer to handle mail more than once.

Last June, I wrote three thank you notes to the South Whidbey Assembly of God to share my appreciation for their incredible efforts with the Ben Brager Auction Fundraiser. In all my years of helping with auctions, I have never seen a more efficient and professional gathering of volunteers. My skinny legs still get goosebumps thinking about the experience filled with love and fellowship.

8IJECFZ 8FFLMZ Yesterday, the three thank you notes which I had mailed in mid-June were returned to me, with the Langley post office annotations indicating the South Whidbey Assembly of God has no postal receptacle for mail addressed to their street location. There is nothing quite like a rejected love offering to start one's day.

I am glad the Langley Post Office held on to my three thank you notes for almost a month. This way, I could stay in a state of wonder. Wonder is a wonderful thing. Just ask a fan of Stevie. And, now I know the post office box receptacle for the South Whidbey Assembly of God on Maxwelton Road, across the street from the public schools, noting due separation of church and state, is 1449. I shall now never forget that SWAG box number as I lived for years at 1209 West First Street, in Oil City, Pennsylvania, only 240 digits, and a couple thousand miles, away.

I am so glad we learn by repetition, for, with my short term memory, it is never too long before I am repeated upon. Next week, we shall discuss the invention of the repeating rifle, a precursor to my cursing repetitively.

Just in case my re-sent thank you's are returned to me again for modification, a hearty and healthy thank you to Gloria and Alana and the SWAG auction angels for showing our community once again why we live here.

Well, if you have ever watched Judge Judy on television in the afternoon, you might see where our elementary school kids are learning their anatomy and physiology. I was a junior in college before I could even spell dysfunction. I always thought dysfunction was two words.

The Six Million Dollar Senior Yesterday, feeling the need to check my truck radiator to verify the coolant level, I pulled the hood release handle completely out of wherever it came from or goes. How exciting.

Finally, after twenty nine years, and almost 200,000 miles, I have a handle on my truck.

Letters to the Editor Editor, On July 30th one of our nation’s most valuable and popular social programs turns 50. Signed into law by President Johnson, the program currently covers 55 million Americans – people aged 65 and older and younger people with permanent disabilities.

On its golden anniversary, Medicare can celebrate many worthy accomplishments. Among them, it has sharply reduced poverty among seniors and has reduced health disparities related to race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. While not perfect, Medicare allows enrolled Americans to go to the doctor or hospital of their choice, and they are far happier than those with private insurance.

Access to needed healthcare has led to better health outcomes for seniors and contributed to a five year increase in life expectancy at age 65.

Little appreciated is that fact that traditional Medicare spends only 2% on overhead/administrative costs compared to private insurance whose costs run anywhere from 12 to 30%.

Healthcare costs under Medicare, versus private insurance, have also experienced a slower rate of growth.

Given the myriad of shortcomings of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) – e.g., decreasing employer coverage, increasing outof-pocket expenses and lack of cost controls – is it not time to seriously consider expanding and improving Medicare for everyone?

A national, improved ‘Medicare for All’ system is not a pipedream – it could easily be financed with a nominal increase in the Federal payroll tax (currently at 1.45%) and the savings of approximately $400 billion annually that goes for the administrative waste associated with the private insurance industry. Imagine for the moment, no more premiums, co-pays, deductibles, co-insurance, restricted provider networks, bankruptcies from medical debt, but instead savings from negotiating drug prices, universal, comprehensive coverage, regardless of employment status, the freedom to choose one’s doctors and hospital, and more money for discretionary spending outside of healthcare.

For the last several years there has been legislation in Congress – H. R. 676 – the Expanded

To say the decision by 2 of the 3 Port of Coupeville commissioners, Marshall Bronson and John Carr, voting to break the agreement that has been on-going for over 15 years with the Greenbank Farm Management Group (GFMG) was a surprise, is a profound understatement.

Shocking, unreasonable, out-of-nowhere, indefensible and underhanded all say it better.

To illustrate how shocking it is, one need only read the Values statement in the latest Port of Coupeville Comprehensive Plan (developed at the request of and at the direction of the Port of Coupeville commissioners), which pledges `A commitment to open and honest public disclosure.’ The two commissioners who ramrodded through the motion will not discuss their action, nor did they allow any discussion of the subject before making their vote. Perhaps they have never heard of Roberts Rules of Order, which says, `members should never rush through a motion without any discussion’. It is my opinion that their actions were neither open nor honest, and show no attempt at public disclosure. In fact, they seem to be disdainful of public involvement, of any type.

In an informational meeting held Wednesday evening, July 15, 2015 at the Greenbank Farm, members of the GFMG fielded questions from the packed house, according to sign-in sheets to be at least 150 people, to try to shed some light on the Port’s decision. And, frankly, the GFMG seems just as mystified as everyone else as to what the commissioners of the Port of Coupeville are up to, and what they hope to accomplish.

The two commissioners who instituted the vote, Carr and Bronson, are lame ducks. One will be leaving office at the end of October 2015, and the other’s term expires December 31, 2015. New occupants for both offices have been elected. So, the unanswered questions remain; what were they trying to accomplish, an in-your-face nyah-nyah statement?--A meaningless exercise of power, before they faded off the scene?--An attempt to wipe out the work of hundreds of volunteers over nearly 2 decades, and the boundless enjoyment and enthusiasm of thousands of Greenbank Farm visitors every year?

I think we all deserve answers, don’t you?

Coupeville to Celebrate the 2015 Arts & Crafts Festival Established in 1964, the Coupeville Arts & Crafts Festival is one of Washington State’s oldest continuously-run festivals. The Festival is renowned for its primary focus on quality arts and crafts, handmade by artisans from the Pacific Northwest as well as many other states throughout the United States.

Transforming downtown Coupeville into a festival atmosphere starting Friday, July 31, the festival will kick-off with its annual Art Gallery & Wine Reception at 7:00pm in the Coupeville Recreation Hall – advanced tickets are required and are $20 each.

Saratoga Road between Lone Lake Road and Park Road.

DeBruyn Road between Saratoga Road and 3rd Street.

3rd St./Brooks Hill Rd./Bayview Rd. between DeBruyn Road and Andreason Road.

Park Road between Saratoga Road and Camano Road.

Camano Avenue/Langley Road between Park Road and Sports Complex Park.

Maxwelton Road between Langley Road and South Whidbey High School.

“Go ahead, play with your food,” say organizers of the sixth annual Garden Critter Workshop on Sunday, August 2. “Then enter it in the fair!”

The event is co-sponsored by the Deer Lagoon Grange #846 and South Whidbey Tilth at the Tilth Farmers’ Market, open 11:00am to 2:00pm at 2812 Thompson Road, off Highway 525 between Freeland and Bayview.

Farmers are bringing their weirdest, most misshapen vegetables and fruits. Crafters have scraps of yarn, wood, etc for making People or Animal Critters to be entered in the Whidbey Island Area Fair. Children 16 and under may supplement their purchases with Grange Bux, up to two per child, to buy odd-looking vegetables, fruits and materials to make creations.

Grange members will help advise how to enter each item in the Whidbey Island Area Fair.

Grange Bux are valued at one dollar apiece.

2015 Pink Salmon Derby Freeland Ace Hardware and the Fishinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Club are gearing up for their 2015 Pink Salmon Derby, to be held on Saturday, August 22. All proceeds from the derby entry fees, t-shirt sales and hot dog sales will go to the Fishinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual college scholarship fund and will be awarded to a local student going into the marine biology or marine field.

The derby in 2009, 2011 and 2013 were each a huge success with more than 250 registered anglers and over 75 fish weighed in by adults and kids. Anglers donated more than 30 fish to the local food bank and the Fishinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Club was proud to present a check for $2600 in 2013 towards a scholarship to a local high school student going into the marine biology or marine field.

Entry tickets are available at Freeland Ace Hardware now through August 21. Entry is $10 for adults and $3 for young anglers (12 years and under). One entry ticket per person. Each entry ticket will be entered into the prize raffle that will take place during the awards ceremony.

Additional raffle tickets will be available for sale for $5 each on the day of the derby.

The Board of County Commissioners appoints Ferry Advisory Committee members for 4 year terms, which may be renewed by mutual agreement. The Ferry Advisory Committee consists of six members, three for the Clinton Ferry Terminal and three for the Coupeville Ferry Terminal. By RCW, no more than two members, at the time of their appointment, may be of the same major political party and your party affiliation must be included in your application materials.

The Ferry Advisory Committee meets as needed to discuss the concerns of the ferry user groups and relay that information to lawmakers in Olympia. Service on the Ferry Advisory Committee is without fee or compensation.

This seminar is designed for people who will be going on Medicare in the next 6 months or who would like more information about Medicare. It is presented by SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefit Advisers) volunteers. Information will be provided on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;basicâ&#x20AC;? Medicare benefits as well as the options for additional insurance(s) for 2015. Presenters will cover the differences between â&#x20AC;&#x153;Medigapâ&#x20AC;? or supplemental insurance as well as the various Advantage plans available on Whidbey Island. This will include the benefits and rates. They will also provide information about the various drug plan options. If you want help with your drug plan, bring a detailed list of your drugs.

August is What Will Be Your Legacy Month.

If you knew this, you have an unusual knowledge of obscure celebrations. But even if you weren’t aware of this “month,” you can see that the idea behind it — the importance of leaving a legacy — is an important one. What should you do to help ensure you’ll leave the type of legacy you desire?

To begin with, identify those people whom you’d like to directly benefit from your legacy.

What can you leave behind to your children, grandchildren, other family members or even close friends? Then, think about those charitable organizations you support — can you leave something behind to them?

Once you have decided what your legacy should look like, you can take steps to implement your ideas. Here are a few suggestions: • Draw up your will. A will is probably the most essential legacy-related document.

Essentially, you need a will to ensure that your assets and personal belongings will be distributed according to your wishes. If you die intestate (without a will), your belongings will be distributed to your “heirs” as defined by state laws — and these distributions may not be at all what you had in mind.

• Consider a living trust. Depending on your situation, you may need to go further than a will when creating the estate plans that help define your legacy. For example, you might want to create a living trust, which can allow your assets to go directly to your heirs, avoiding the public, time-consuming and potentially expensive process of probate. A living trust offers other benefits, too, so you may want to consult with a legal professional to learn more about this estate-planning tool.

• Plan for your charitable gifts. To leave the legacy you have envisioned, you might want to do more than provide your loved ones with needed financial resources — you may also want to provide lasting support to those charitable or educational organizations whose work you admire. Toward this end, you might want to consult with your tax and legal advisors about charitable gifting strategies that can provide tax benefits, both now and in the future.

• Give your family the power to act on your behalf. Like everyone else, you want to be in charge of your own destiny. Unfortunately, however, you may someday become mentally or physically incapacitated for a while. If this were to happen, you’ll want your family to be able to act on your behalf with regard to financial and health care decisions. To grant your loved ones this power, you may want to create a power of attorney and a health care directive.

• Communicate your wishes. You need to communicate to your loved ones the actions you have taken regarding your will, living trust and other estate-planning documents. By explaining your wishes in advance, you may be able to help your family members avoid disputes and unpleasant surprises — and that lack of “drama” can also be a key part of your legacy.

What Will Be Your Legacy Month will come and go. But by definition, your legacy will last beyond your lifetime — so make it a good one.

expanding their empire, they brought with them, their adapted Greek cheesecake recipe and this was how it was brought to Europe. Different areas of Europe began making use of the ingredients available to them and adapting the Roman cheesecake recipe and making it uniquely theirs, native to their country.

In the 1700s the Europeans began replacing yeast in their breads and cakes with beaten eggs to allow the finished product to rise.

This eliminated the tart, distinctive flavor the yeast gave to a product and when applied to the same method for making cheesecake, resulted in a more sweet dessert-like treat.

Cheesecake...What the Ancients Gave Us I think it’s fairly safe to say the vast majority of us really enjoy cheesecake. This creamy, sweet, yet ever so slightly tangy, cool dessert does wonders for many people, especially me. The cheesecake we are all familiar with, and which most of us love, didn’t start out the way it is today. Its origins can be traced back to approximately 2,000 BC to ancient Greece, where physical anthropologists excavations uncovered cheese molds on the island of Samos, which is indicative of the dairy product being made and consumed there. Researchers suggest cheesecake was served to athletes at the Olympic games in 776 BC, as a form of nutrition and energy for their events. It was also apparently consumed by a couple on their wedding day. What a difference a few thousand years make. Ancient Greek wedding cakes were essentially a cheesecake comprised of minimal ingredients. Wheat, honey, flour and cheese, all mixed together, shaped into a cake and baked. Today wedding cakes can be decadent and pleasing to both the palate and the eye. Towering layers of cake upon cake, all to just be cut and eaten, some of which will inevitably end up smashed on the bride and groom's faces. In any event,

the stark contrast just goes to show how creative humans are in any aspect but especially in the culinary arts.

In 230 AD the first cheesecake recipe was actually written down, by the writer Athenaeus. While it wasn’t a time consuming kind of recipe requiring a lot of effort, it’s amazing it’s survived all these years. The method was to pound cheese until smooth and paste like, mix it in a brass pan with spring wheat flour and honey, heat it ‘in one mass’ cool and serve. Very basic but I can’t help but think this crude and rustic cheesecake protégé was probably really good.

So after reading about the Greek origins of cheesecake, I wondered how it came to be known all over the world. What was its mode of transportation around the globe? Well, that would be the conquering Romans. One of their many plunders of successful battle was the cheesecake recipe, which they henceforth adapted by adding eggs and crushed cheese to the original one. The Roman version was baked under a ‘hot brick’ and served warm, as opposed to being allowed to cool. Sometimes this cheese mixture was put into a pastry casing and they called it ‘libuma’. When the Roman’s continued on their conquests

Now cream cheese is definitely an all-American addition to the cheesecake. It was supposedly created by accident thanks to a New York dairy farmer in 1872. He was attempting to recreate the French cheese Neufchatel which alas, did not work, but instead the process heralded something better (in my opinion), the birth of cream cheese. It’s this particular dairy product which lends its smooth and creamy texture to the tantalizing taste of cheesecake.

Neither did I and unfortunately the website states they don’t know when or if the chocolate will be back in stock. Nevertheless it’s demonstrative of the diverse love and the incredibly strong grip the dessert has on many aspects of life for many of us.

July 30th is National Cheesecake Day and of course I am going to suggest you celebrate in the best and only way possible- by treating yourself to a slice of cheesecake. There are so many options out there you should be able to find a flavor or style you enjoy. If you decide you would like to make a simple version of this ancient Greek dessert, I have included a simple recipe here. It was found on a Philadelphia Cream Cheese package so it should be pretty tasty. If you have any comments, information or recipes you would like to share with me, please do so because I love hearing from you, so Let’s Dish!

Personally, I am partial to a New York cheesecake. No fruit toppings, no whipped cream, just the pastry base with the sweet and tangy cheese goodness. Many people credit the same Arnold Reuben, famed for his sandwiches, with inventing the original New York cheesecake recipe. While New York cheesecake may be the most wellknown of its kind, there are others with an equally delicious spin on this dessert. In Chicago for example, they add sour cream to their mixture, which gives it a creamier, possibly smoother texture. All over the world, people have their own variation of this widespread, diverse cake. The Italians use ricotta cheese when making cheesecake, while the German’s make use of cottage cheese in the same product creation.

Easy Cheesecake Recipe 2 (8 ounce) packages of cream cheese 1 cup of sugar ½ teaspoon of vanilla 2 eggs Graham cracker pie crust (pre-made)

Cream together, the cheese and sugar. Add in the vanilla, and add the eggs in last. Mix until well blended and pour into graham cracker pie crust. Bake on the middle rack of the oven at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.

Life Tributes Lorraine Gertrude Shelly Lorraine G. Shelly passed away peacefully in Oak Harbor, WA July 1, 2015.

She was 91 years of age.

Lorraine was born Lorraine Gertrude Wold August 11, 1923 in Tacoma WA, to Guy and Emily (Neumann) Wold.

She grew up in Tacoma WA and was married to Robert Eugene Shelly January 28, 1942. Together they built a family and five successful businesses.

Lorraine and Robert had 4 children, Brian, Dennis, Diane and Gary. The family lived in Seattle WA, Belfair WA, Santa Barbara CA, and Oak Harbor WA. In each of these towns Lorraine was an active member of the community.

When her children were young Lorraine was the Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. Her real love was music. She sang in the church choir wherever she lived. She directed the choirs in Belfair and Oak Harbor. She even sang on TV and the radio when she lived in Seattle.

When Lorraine retired from business she didn’t stop working. She volunteered at the Whidbey Playhouse and the Oak Harbor Senior Center.

Lorraine’s hands were never still. She sewed, crocheted and embroidered for friends and family for as long as her eyes and hands would allow. Her favorite subject matter was birds, especially hummingbirds.

Lorraine is survived by her four children; Brian (Andra) Shelly of Oak Harbor, Dennis of Oak Harbor, Diane Starker of Tonasket, WA and Gary (Kathy) of Oak Harbor.

Also surviving are 12 Grandchildren and 17 Greatgrandchildren. Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband Robert and her brother Eugene Wold.

The family would like to thank the staff of Regency on Whidbey for their wonderful care over the last few years.

They suggest memorials to a favorite charity.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Wallin Funeral Home Saturday, August 1 at 1pm with Pastor Hallack Greider of Whidbey Presbyterian Church officiating. A reception at the funeral home will follow.

Earl L. Jorgensen, D.D.S. Earl Jorgensen, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones July 14, 2015, in Coupeville, WA. He was born April 24, 1928, in St. Paul, MN, to Earl Jorgensen, Sr. and Elnora (Nelson) Jorgensen and raised in Minneapolis, MN. After he graduated from Marshall High School, he served in the Army in post-war Japan and went on to the University of Minnesota where he graduated from the school of dentistry and was a member of the Psi Omega fraternity. He received his orthodontics degree at the University of Iowa in Cedar Rapids, IA. He practiced orthodontics in Fremont, CA and later in Minneapolis, MN. Upon retirement, he resided in Sedona, AZ and Whidbey Island, WA. Earl will be remembered by family and friends as an intelligent, kind and loving man with a keen sense of humor. His love of nature, wildlife, and the great outdoors inspired us all. He enjoyed traveling the world, sailing, canoeing in the boundary waters of Minnesota, hiking in the wilderness, nature photography, and was an accomplished oil painter. Many of his paintings have been exhibited and sold in galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest. He loved the arts, classical music, attending many concerts throughout his years.

Earl is survived by his wife of 20 years, Marty (Rogers) Jorgensen (Oak Harbor, WA); his son John Jorgensen (Newport, OR); his daughter, Kristi Jorgensen-Vil-

lines, her husband, Rick Villines and their daughter, Ella (Sammamish, WA); his grandchildren from his (deceased) son Gregg Jorgensen: Erik Jorgensen (Durango, CO) and Sara Jorgensen-Holder, husband, Jack Holder, and their sons Isaac and Miles Holder (Fort Collins, CO).

Earl will be greatly missed. We know he lives on in the hearts of all he left behind.

His adventurous spirit and great sense of humor will be welcomed in the heavenly home.

A gathering for family and friends to celebrate his life will be held at: Senior Center in Oak Harbor, WA, Saturday, August 1 from 2-4pm.

Myrtle Ruth (James) Whitehead Myrtle Ruth (James) Whitehead passed away July 15, 2015 at the age of 90 years, after a brief battle with cancer. Myrtle was born January 27, 1925, in Oak Harbor and graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1943. She was the daughter of Herbert N and Marie (Ronhaar) James, early farmers in the Crescent Harbor section of Whidbey Island. Myrtle was also the granddaughter of Whidbey Island pioneer Williams James, Jr., a British Marine who settled in the Crescent Harbor area in the 1860’s after over-extending his leave while being stationed on San Juan Island in support of the Washington Pig War. Except for a short period during WWII when Myrtle lived in Grass Valley, CA while her husband served in the Army, she lived her entire life in Oak Harbor. During her time in Oak Harbor, she worked for nearly 30 years for Puget Sound Power and Light Company in their Oak Harbor office.

Myrtle was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, and a Rebekah, for which she received a service award and served as Rebekah Treasurer for many years.

Myrtle enjoyed living in her home independently until 90 years of age as well as cooking, taking cruises, watching golf, the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners games, and spending time with her family. In her younger days, Myrtle enjoyed summer camping trips in British Columbia with her family and friends.

Myrtle was well known for the afghans and baby blankets she crocheted, donating them to families with newborn infants. Many other Oak Harbor charities received additional crocheted items. She was involved in many charitable projects, including the Rebekah’s Seed Money Project conducted in support of Day Break Adult Care. Myrtle was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oak Harbor.

Myrtle is survived by her son Roger (Maureen) of Chelmsford, MA, and daughter Karen (Jack) Bean of Coupeville, WA. She is also survived by grandchildren Leslie (Tom) Pace of Oklahoma City, OK, Greg Whitehead of Gardner, MA; Jerry Roles of Lynwood, WA., Kevin Cody-Little and Justin Cody of Chelmsford, MA, Ryan Cody of Worcester, WA., Scott Bean of Kirkland, WA. and Russell Bean of Oak Harbor. Also surviving are greatgrandchildren Timothy (Kayla) Roles of Kennewick,WA; Emily and Abby Pace of Oklahoma City, OK; Loki BellWhitehead of Gardner, MA; Lyra Cody-Little of Chelmsford, MA, Samantha Bean and Josh Reeff of Oak Harbor, and great-great grandchild, Rhylee Reeff of Oak Harbor.

Sister Alice Kammenga of Mt. Vernon, WA also survives as well as many nieces and nephews.

as did a grandson, Timothy Wayne Roles in 1982 and sisters Frances Schmerhorn and Hazel Boswell.

The family would like to thank the team of visiting nurses from Whidbey General Hospital Hospice, especially Chris Carpenter and support personnel Rosie and Delores for the excellent care and support during Myrtle’s last weeks. We would also like to thank Laurann Weidenbach and Island Home Nursing, especially Caroline, and the support from friends in the community.

A Memorial Service for Myrtle will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at 1pm at Wallin Funeral Home with Certified Life Celebrant, Gary Wallin, officiating. A reception will follow.

EMMA L. BAIN Emma L. Bain, age 82, died suddenly at her home in Oak Harbor July 19, 2015. She was born April 18, 1933 in Munchen, Germany. She was raised in Germany.

While she was dating an American soldier, she met another soldier, Allen Bain. Emma and Allen fell in love and were married in Dachau, Germany April 13, 1957. Allen had to extend his tour of duty to allow Emma to obtain her papers to travel to the U.S. Allen completed three tours in Vietnam and Emma stayed stateside, living first in Minnesota and then in Sumner, WA, where the winters were easier. She did not enjoy the winters of Minnesota. Emma and Al returned to Germany for two additional tours prior to his retirement at Ft. Ord, CA in 1977. In 1981, Emma and Al then moved to Oak Harbor.

Emma loved maintaining her yard as a showplace.

She loved her cat and dogs. Emma was an avid fisherwoman, fishing for salmon at LaPush and trout fishing at Baker Lake.

Emma is survived by her husband Allen. She was preceded in death by her parents, by one son Michael Bain and by four brothers and four sisters.

VERA ANGELINE OLSEN Vera Angeline Olsen died at her home in Anacortes July 20, 2015 at the age of 102. She was born February 12, 1913 in Mangum, OK to Riley and Minnie Kennedy. She spent her first five years in Oklahoma and then followed her family to Texas, where she attended school in Petraline, TX and then moved to Wichita Falls. Vera’s father was a funeral director and the family moved frequently serving at different funeral homes in the area.

Vera met her husband Hans Olsen, a Whidbey Island native, in 1939 and on December 14, 1940, they were married. Hans was in the Navy and he and Vera continued to move on a regular basis. They spent time in Torrence, CA and when Han’s tour of duty was completed, decided to return to his roots in Oak Harbor.

The Olsen family had a large amount of land in the Mariner’s Cove area and they settled at Strawberry Point on the property known as “School House Hill.”

Hans began a career as a commercial fisherman, operating his boat the “Concord.” Vera and Hans continued their legacy of moving and left Oak Harbor for Napa, CA. Several years later, they moved to Anacortes, settling first on a farm and then at Skyline, then another location before settling at Sunrise Estates. For a time Vera worked at the Cannery in Anacortes.

Vera loved to work in her garden, mow her yard, clean and maintain her home and cook. She enjoyed word find games, the newspaper and the news and was an avid Dominoes player. She loved activities which kept her mind active. Her attitude was to take one day at a time and her favorite saying was “My bags are not packed.”

Vera is survived by one daughter Judy and husband John of Anacortes and Bend, OR., by one granddaughter Kaci Parker of Spokane, by two great grandchildren Shahalie and Brandon Totten of Bend, OR and one great-great grandchild, Haven, also of Bend and a special nephew Corky Canfield. She was preceded in death by her husband Hans in 2001, by one granddaughter Gwen Totten and by her parents and five siblings.

Graveside funeral services for Vera were held at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Oak Harbor, Friday, July 24, 2015 at 2pm with Gary Wallin, Life Celebrant officiating. Vera was laid to rest next to her beloved husband Hans.

Donald Edward Boyer Donald E. Boyer passed away suddenly July 21, 2015 at the age of 85. Don was born in Oak Harbor, WA November 25, 1929 to Jess and Myrtle (Estergreen) Boyer. Don spent his childhood on the family farm and later worked in the family meat market on Pioneer Way. After graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 1948 he attended Washington State College.

In the fall of 1950, Don announced his engagement to Norine Chiabai who had reigned as Queen of the 1949 Anacortes Mariners Pageant. The Korean War started and Don enlisted in the Navy, serving four years aboard the USS Rooks DD-804 in the Korean Theater and circumnavigated the world. On June 9, 1951 Don and Norine were married and made their first home in Newport, RI. Norine, who passed away in November 1987, will always be remembered as the “Queen” by family and friends.

Don and Norine returned to Oak Harbor in 1954 where he was employed at the Oak Harbor Garage. In 1959, Don opened Don’s Auto Sales, his first car dealership.

In 1964 he purchased the Chevrolet-Pontiac dealership and established their new facilities. Don acquired a great staff at his dealership, including Les Dams who served for many years as Dealership Chaplain. Larry Boyer, Orlan Dean and Jim Slowik were General Managers.

The many employees of the dealership over the years were proud of the honors and recognition they earned.

Don’s accomplishments included President of the Skagit-Island Dealers Association and the Washington State Auto Dealers Association; WA State Auto Dealers “Dealer of the Year” 1979; Time Magazine “Quality Dealer Award” 1982; US Small Business Administration “Person of the Year” 1989; Lions International Zone Extension Award 1963; “Paul Harris Fellow” awarded

by Rotary International; U.S. Secretary of the Navy the Honorable W. Graham Claytor “Meritorious Public Service Award”; U. S. Navy League National Director Emeritus 1995; Navy League of the US “Hall of Fame”; President of the Oak Harbor School District Board of Directors and a “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

Don’s family is very proud of his recognitions and his life memberships in the causes that were most meaningful to him. He was a member of the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, Naval War College Foundation, Navy League of the United States, Association of Naval Aviation, Tailhook Association, Intruder Association, Oak Harbor and North Whidbey Lions (55 years), Oak Harbor Elks Lodge #2362 (56 years), Veterans of Foreign Wars (49 years) and American Legion George Morris Post #129 (64 years.)

With what little free time Don had, he enjoyed golf, boating and camping trips with family and friends where they enjoyed hiking, fishing and campfires.

On March 4 1989, Don married the former Suzanne Wittenberg. After his retirement November 5, 1993, Don and Suzanne enjoyed spending half of the year in Litchfield Park, AZ as members of the Wigwam Golf Club.

They also spent two weeks every September at their timeshare in Whistler BC. They enjoyed boating for ten years on their boat “The Peddler.”

Don is survived by his wife Suzanne, Don’s children Nikki (Tom) Braaten, Scott (Cindy) Boyer, Kari (Dave) Holmy, Lesli (Phil) Schlaepfer and Suzanne’s children Jeff (Christa) Wittenberg and Lisa (Hans) Illingworth.

Also surviving are grandchildren Matt and Alexa Holmly, Andrew, Christopher, and Julia Schlaepfer, Carter, Grace and Mason Wittenberg and Parker, Ava and Charlie Illingworth. Don was preceded in death by first wife, Norine and brothers Jack, Larry, and Lane.

The family suggests memorials to the Navy League of the United States, Oak Harbor Council, PO Box 847, Oak Harbor, WA., 98277. They also wish to express their deepest appreciation to the caregivers who provided assistance to Don in the final years of his life.

Funeral services for Don will be held Thursday, August 6 at 2pm at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Vonna Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery. All are invited to a reception in Centennial Hall following the burial.

When does the impossible become possible?

When you believe it can, apparently, judging by the life of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Arnold in his autobiographical book, Total Recall, says he was drawn to the 1990 movie script of the same name because “it connected with the sense I had sometimes that my life was too good to be true.”

In the movie, the question of what is real and what is hallucination arises early. Is the character Douglas Quaid, played by Arnold, living a real life, or is he trapped in a fantasy of implanted memories? Quaid may be a hero living a secret agent’s life on Mars. Or he may be only a schizophrenic construction laborer living illusions of the mind. Neither Quaid nor the viewer can be absolutely sure, even at the end of the movie. The good things that happen to Quaid are so good, one suspects they were pre-selected.

A summary of Arnold’s own life has that same pre-selected, too-good-to-be-true quality. Consider: Arnold was born in postwar Austria, a defeated country gripped by famine and the ever-present fear of Soviet invasion. Driven by thoughts of a better life, Arnold had a dream most thought impossible—he believed he would find success in America as a champion bodybuilder and movie star. At age twenty-one he left Austria, briefly he thought, intending only a quick visit to London to compete in a Mr. Universe contest before returning home. Fate propelled him farther—from London he was beckoned first to Miami and then onward to a new home in Los Angeles. He knew little English when he arrived, but within five years he had learned the language and become the undisputed king of bodybuilding. Within ten years he was a self-made millionaire with business ventures in real estate, construction and bodybuilding. He also had earned his college degree in business and a Golden Globe Award for his acting debut in the film Stay Hungry. Within twenty years he was the husband of Maria Shriver, making him part of the Kennedy clan, while emerging at home as a Republican Party leader and internationally as the world’s most widely recognized actor. Thirty-six years after arriving in America, Arnold became governor of California, heading the seventh largest economy in the world. So much for the impossible.

In accomplishing all of these successes, Arnold achieved something even more remarkable: He transformed the image of bodybuilding almost single-handedly, from its beginnings as a suspect sub-culture with gay connotations to a healthy and popular mainstream activity for both sexes.

By any reasonable standard, Arnold’s life achievement list is quite impossible, particularly for a man at such disadvantage in his beginning. Again in Arnold’s own words (from his 2012 autobiography, Total Recall, published by Simon and Schuster): “There’s a photograph of me arriving in Los Angeles.

I’m twenty-one years old, it’s 1968, and I’m wearing wrinkled brown pants, clunky shoes, and a cheap long-sleeved shirt. I’m holding a beat-up plastic bag containing just a few things, and waiting at the baggage claim to get my gym bag, which holds everything else. I look like a refugee, I can’t speak more than a few phrases of English, and I don’t have any money—but on my face is a big smile.”

Why the big smile? What did Arnold know?

In the twenty-seven sign galactic zodiac of the ancients, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Moon placement alone is cause enough for his big smile. His Moon is called “The Invincible Star” or “The Undefeated.” The perfect moniker for Arnold! Over and over again invincible Arnold has demonstrated his ability to achieve “impossible” goals. Defeat seems not to be a word in his vocabulary.

Maybe the ancients with their very precise zodiac were onto something. They accurately describe Arnold right in his Moon sign name.

“The Invincible Star” is invincible, say the ancients, because the person is “proud, popular, attractive, and able to draw attention to themselves.” Sound like Arnold?

There’s more. “They use their charisma to advantage, by being extremely persuasive, to the point of convincing people of things they would not otherwise agree with.” Such as convincing the masses that bodybuilding is cool? Cool enough for the king of bodybuilding to become a movie star or a governor?

Victory in struggles or confrontation is assured to this Moon, based on one important point: a strong network of human connections. Social networks perform like magic for Arnold’s sign. The all-important connections tend to come easily, with success happening typically at an early age.

The network magic began for Arnold early. He left home in 1968 with a ticket to London—traveling on borrowed money— where he won the Mr. Universe contest. That win in itself was remarkable at such a young age. But even more remarkable was what happened next.

The day of his London win, a congratulatory telegram arrived inviting Arnold to America and another competition—expenses paid.

Arnold accepted, but he had no American visa. Arnold had only to wait while strings were pulled for him at the American Embassy, expediting his passage, and within a week he was in Miami. There Arnold’s benefactor to that point—bodybuilding’s number one promoter, the great Joe Weider—set a typewriter on a table at poolside and invited Arnold to sit with him. The result was magic. For hours Weider picked Arnold’s brain—the language barrier made communication difficult—before ending the interview on a surprising note. Weider said to Arnold, “Don’t go back to Europe—you need to stay here.” Weider paid Arnold’s way to California, where he helped Arnold get an apartment, a car, and also paid living expenses for a year so Arnold could focus on his schooling and physique training.

With stardom and the California governorship checked off Arnold’s dream list, what’s next? As a foreign-born, Arnold is barred from US presidency by the Constitution.

Given a rewrite of the Constitution—there has been talk of it—the presidency could be next. Impossible? Not in Arnold’s too-goodto-be-true world. Not by a long shot. Believe it.
