Thanks to many of you readers, we have been infundated (inundated with fun).

While many of us were shopping for gardening accessories with our recent spring-like weather, several of you were planting jokes in my

e-mail.

Here are the best of those recently received.

Acknowledgments of appreciation will be revealed somewhere down the road as I am presently trapped in a comedic cul-de-sac.

Giuseppe speaks At St. Peter's Catholic Church, weekly husbands' marriage seminars are held. At the session last week, the priest asked Giuseppe, who said he was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same woman all these years.

Giuseppe replied to the assembled husbands, “Wella, I'va tried to treat her nicea, spenda da money on her, but besta of all is, I tooka her to Italy for the 25th anniversary!”

The priest responded, “Giuseppe, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell us what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary?”

Proudly, Giuseppe replied, "I gonna go picka her up."

NAS Whidbey An unmarried master chief from NASWI has a nightly ritual of polishing off a six pack of beer while watching sports on TV. One evening, just as he opened his last beer, there's a knock at the door. The Chief answers it, only to find a nine-foot-tall cockroach standing there. The monstrous vermin beats the tar out of the sailor and leaves him a crumpled heap on the porch.

The next night, the man limits himself to three beers, thinking he may have hallucinated the previous night's event. Again, there's a knock at the door. Again the enormous cockroach beats him to a pulp.

The following night, the master chief decides to go cold turkey. He's going to face this problem stone-cold sober. When he hears the knock at the door, he springs up, ready for action. Again, a giant cockroach.

The master chief tries to defend himself, but he's no match for this beast. Before long, the man is reduced to a bleeding nervous wreck.

The next morning, the Chief goes to see his doctor, a grizzled old veteran. The doctor listens to the story and finally shakes his head. "Son I know what's wrong, but there's nothing I can do about it," he says.

"There's just a nasty bug going around."

Letter Home Dear Ma and Pa, I am well. Hope you are. Tell my brothers Walt and Elmer that the Marine Corps beats working for old man Jones by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all the places get filled up. I was restless at first because they made us stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m.

But I am getting used to sleeping late now.

Tell Walt and Elmer all you have to do before breakfast is smooth your bunk and shine some stuff. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. This is real easy.

Men have to shave but it's not that bad because there's warm water here. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.

We go on "forced marches," which the

Whidbey Weekly platoon sergeant says is necessary to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A "forced march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in big trucks. The sergeant is like a school teacher.

He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board.

This next news is real funny. Walt and Elmer will laugh. I keep getting awards for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk's head and it don't move, and it ain't shooting back at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you gotta do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.

Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with them boys back home.

Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter, Elly A Cautionary Tale An extremely well-dressed, but quite elderly, gentleman strode into a very popular downtown bistro one evening recently. He was clad in a three-piece Seville Row handtailored suit, carnation in his lapel and a silk handkerchief in his jacket pocket. His gray hair was full and well-styled. He wore an obviously expensive after shave lotion on his well-barbered square-jawed visage. His wrist watch was a gold Patek Philippe Calatrava.

Clearly the gentleman was a man of means and high station.

He walked immediately to the bar, placed his gold-handled walking stick next to his stool and sat down. On the stool next to him sat a remarkably attractive woman in her late 20s with coiffed blonde locks and dressed in a Balenciaga creation that ever so discreetly revealed physical attributes which could only be described as anticipatorialy breathtaking.

The bartender asked the gentleman what he wished and he ordered a glass of Macallan scotch neat. The bartender served him and he turned to the beauty next to him who by this time was desperately trying to determine if her apartment would suffice for the evening's obvious conclusion. He took a sip from his glass, raised one eyebrow and inquired of her in an ever-so-slight Oxford English accent: "Do I come here often?"

Spell Check In about three months, we are scheduled to be grandparents. First-timers. The excitement level is more than we could have ever anticipated when we were grandchildren. Now that I am almost a grandparent, memories are flooding my reservoir. Pretty incredible, eh?

Our daughter and her husband have picked out a name for their soon-to-be-bouncing baby girl. I asked our excited mom-to-be how her baby's name was to be spelled.

Well, do I say anything? I think they are misspelling the baby's name.

I asked the computer spellers how many different ways there are to spell the name selected. Over a dozen possibilities were revealed, but none of those selections were spelled the way our kids want to spell the name of their newbie.

It’s that time of year again for dads to take their daughters out for an evening of fun and dancing. The 14th annual Daddy & Daughter Ball will have a “red carpet event” theme with lots of Hollywood glam. The yearly Ball has become a favorite local tradition, with 275+ coming out each year for a special night out together.

All ages are welcome, though the dance is most frequented by girls ages 2 to 16. The role of dad is not limited to traditional “dads”; other role models are welcome, and there have been a lot of grandfathers, brothers, uncles and neighbors towed along for the fun over the years.

Not much of a dancer? No matter, John Travolta’s dancing skills are not required when the D.J. plays YMCA. Really, it’s simply an evening to put on your best duds, get goofy on the dance floor, and visit with other dads and daughters.

The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District (SWPRD) is in need of a few more volunteers to make this the best possible event for these girls. They need decorators the night before (Cozy’s Pizza is donating pizza for the crew), door greeters, paparazzi, refreshment service & prep, clean-up crew, and more. Price Johnson to Kick Off Re-Election Campaign Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson will kick off her 2016 re-election campaign on Saturday, March 5 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm with an Ice Cream Social for her supporters.

The popular local band The Rural Characters will provide entertainment for the event, which will be held at Bayview Hall on South Whidbey.

Democrat Price Johnson was first elected to the Island County Commission in 2008, and became the first woman ever to serve on the commission. She was re-elected to the commission in 2012, and has spent much of her latest term working on small business development, revisions to Island County’s Comprehensive Plan and Shorelines Master Plan, public safety issues and improving transportation options.

Former Island County Commissioner Angie Homola Announces Bid For State Senate in 10th LD

There is limited space available and tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets are $29 per couple and $10 for each additional daughter. New 5K Run to Raise Scholarships for Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Students The Skagit Valley College (SVC) Foundation and SVC’s Student Life office will host a new event to help raise scholarships for students at the College’s Whidbey Island Campus. The 1st Annual 5K Fund Run will take place Saturday, March 12 at the North Whidbey Middle School track. The school is located at 67 NE Izett Street, Oak Harbor.

First time legislative candidate and former Island County Commissioner Angie Homola (D-Oak Harbor) announced that she is challenging 14-year legislative incumbent Barbara Bailey for the State Senate in 2016. Homola, who previously served as an Island County Commissioner in District 2, is an architect, small business owner, and former machinist and carpenter. A Washington resident for over 30 years, Homola has lived in Island County for 19 years with her two children and husband, a U.S. Navy P-3 Orion pilot serving at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

“I am running for the Senate to restore accountability when it comes to our tax dollars

and to ensure the residents of Island, Skagit and Snohomish Counties get their fair share in services from our State Government,” said Homola who served as a county commissioner from 2009 through 2012. “Bailey has been in Olympia for 14-years yet we continue to hear excuses on why we can’t better fund our schools, or guarantee reliable ferry service, or adequately invest in services for seniors, veterans, or the mentally ill – 10th LD residents deserve better.”

During her first two years as a Commissioner, working with colleagues from both parties, Homola cut General Fund expenses by 20%, thereby preventing a financial collapse of Island County Government. She downsized departments, reined in energy and medical costs, and froze elected official salaries. In spite of these cuts, she greatly improved services to veterans while protecting seniors and the most vulnerable. Homola established long-term water protections for island residents.

To stimulate the local economy, Homola helped secure funding for property owners to maintain forestry and agricultural practices, promoted tourism revenue by enhancing public beach access, and park and trail improvements, and she helped craft visionary land use ordinances to promote local business opportunities while safeguarding natural resources. She brought commissioner meetings to the public via video recordings and made committee assignments an open process.

“As a Commissioner I helped refocus our County government and increased transparency for local taxpayers – we need more of the same at the state level,” said Homola.

“Barbara has been in Olympia for 14 years and though I thank her for her service it is time for new blood that will work harder for our interests instead of playing politics with the Olympia establishment.”

Homola points to Bailey’s failure to provide more transparency and accountability toward the more than $2 billion in special interest tax breaks the state gives away to large corporations and other lobbyists. While Bailey recently supported Washington’s 12-cent per gallon gas tax increase, making it the highest in the nation, less then one half of one percent of the $16 billion package went toward the 10th District’s road, ferry, and transit projects.

Homola also cited Bailey’s repeated failure to reach a bipartisan compromise to fully fund education, despite the Supreme Court ruling that the legislature must reduce school districts reliance on local levies to pay for teacher salaries and operating costs. Meanwhile, Bailey has become increasingly close to Olympia lobbyists and special interest PAC’s that have directly contributed over $730,000 to her campaigns since she was elected in 2004 and spent an additional $285,000 independently in support of her campaigns – a total of over $1 million.

“Bailey has represented us for a long time but has lost touch with the people in our district,” said Homola. “It’s time for new leadership so we can better meet the needs of our kids, help students have a job when they graduate, provide better mental health and veteran services for those in need, and bring our tax dollars home to Island, Skagit and Snohomish Counties.”

Homola recently earned a Masters in Environmental Law and Policy, and has a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from Washington State University. She understands the need to balance the natural and built environments for today and tomorrow’s generations.

The 10th Legislative District spans portions of Island, Skagit and Snohomish Counties and includes the communities of Coupeville, La Conner, Langley, Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor, Stanwood and surrounding areas.

On February 17, 2016, while out looking for a possibly entangled humpback whale seen off Edmonds, Alisa Lemire Brooks (Orca Network’s Whale Sighting Network Coordinator) and Stu Davidson (whale sighting volunteer/contributor) checked out the blows of a whale across the sound and found one of the returning Saratoga Grays, #723, off south Whidbey Island.

The Saratoga, or North Puget Sound Gray Whales, return to Saratoga Passage and Possession Sound each spring for their annual three-month feeding foray in North Puget Sound. Cascadia Research of Olympia has been studying this population of Puget Sound Gray Whales for decades and has photo-identified a group of approximately 10 to 12 whales that visit this area each spring. In greater Puget Sound, we see approximately 12 to 50 grays per year, and along the Pacific Coast is a population of 250 gray whales known as the Pacific Northwest feeding aggregation (or seasonal residents). These whales can be found along the coast of Washington and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The whales are identified by the markings on the underside of their flukes, as well as by the patterns of barnacles, scars, and markings on their backs. One whale, Patch, or #49, was first identified by Cascadia in our local waters in 1991 and is a favorite of many local whale watchers, as he is easily identifiable by the large white patch on his right side, back toward his flukes, as well as white patches on the underside of his flukes.

The annual spring visit of gray whales provides an excellent opportunity to view whales from the shorelines of Island and Snohomish counties, or from the Mukilteo/ Clinton ferries, much to the delight of residents and visitors alike.

Orca Network’s Whale Sighting Network has followed the travels of these gray whales, as well as other whales in our region for decades, and since March 2014, their new Langley Whale Center has provided a great venue to learn more about the whales. The Whale Center is located at 115 Anthes Ave. in Langley, one block up from Whale Bell Park, where the Whale Bell is rung whenever someone spots a whale in the area. Life Tributes GAYLE MARY “WENDY” NASH-MOON

backpacking, skiing, reading, writing, playing Scrabble, and collecting rubber duckies. Over the years she was very devoted to the dogs in her life.

Gayle Mary “Wendy” Nash-Moon, longtime Whidbey Island resident, died peacefully Sunday, February 7, at Whidbey General Hospital with her son Matt at her side. Her son Randy and other family members and friends were grateful for the time they spent with her during her last week of life. Early in the week Wendy expressed pleasure at having brought so many people together.

She implemented the recycling program for SVC Whidbey, and she and John started recycling programs for the Coupeville Arts Festival and the Coupeville Farmers Market. She was active in and supported the Whidbey Island Pony Club, the League of Women Voters, Waste Warriors, Beach Watchers, the Coupeville Festival Association, the Whidbey-Camano Land Trust, the Nature Conservancy, and the Friends of the Coupeville Library.

Wendy was born in Bronxville, New York, November 7, 1935, to Valma Coleman Henderson and Maurice Le Roy Henderson. She was raised in Des Moines, IA, and moved to Colorado as a young woman. There she worked at Tumbling River Dude Ranch near Grant and attended Adams State College in Alamosa, where she met and married Norman Nash. He joined the Navy and became a pilot, which brought them and their two sons to Whidbey Island in 1968.

After their divorce, Wendy worked as a clerk at Chuck Dann’s sporting goods store and as an administrative assistant at the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Oak Harbor Junior High, and Skagit Valley College, Whidbey Island Campus where she also earned an associate’s degree. She retired in 1999 and was inducted into the SVC Hall of Fame in 2010. She married John Moon in September 2000.

An ardent nature lover and environmentalist, Wendy had an exceptional zest for life and brought humor and fun to her many activities. She enjoyed riding horses, hiking,

Wendy also enjoyed traveling. As a Navy spouse she went to Greece and Spain; with friends to Alaska, Hawaii, and Ireland; and with John to Costa Rica, Patagonia, Peru, and Wales.

Wendy is survived by her husband John of Coupeville; sons Randall Nash (Lori) of Bellingham and Matthew Nash (Gynon) of Oak Harbor; two grandchildren, Danae, 19, and Raine, 17 (children of Matt and Gynon); one great-granddaughter, Ella, 18 months (granddaughter of Randy and Lori); 5 step children; 10 step grandchildren; 17 step great-grandchildren; and 1 step great-greatgrandchild. Wendy will be sadly missed by her many good friends.

A gathering to celebrate Wendy’s life will take place February 27, 5pm at Nordic Hall, 63 Jacobs Road, Coupeville. At her request, her ashes will be scattered at one of her favorite places on Whidbey Island. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation (WAIF) or to any of the organizations listed above.

How Should You Respond to Market “Correction”?

As an investor, you may be gaining familiarity with the term “market correction.” But what does it mean? And, more importantly, what does it mean to you?

A correction occurs when a key index, such as the S&P 500, declines at least 10% from its previous high. A correction, by definition, is short-term in nature and has historically happened fairly regularly – about once a year.

However, over the past several years, we’ve experienced fewer corrections, so when we have one now, it seems particularly jarring to investors.

How should you respond to a market correction? The answer may depend, to some extent, on your stage of life.

• If you’re still working … If you are in the early or middle parts of your working life, you might not have to concern yourself much about a market correction because you have decades to overcome a short-term downturn. Instead of selling stocks, and stock-based investments, to supposedly “cut your losses,” you may find that now is a good time to buy more shares of quality companies, when their price is down.

Also, you may want to use the opportunity of a correction to become aware of the need to periodically review and rebalance your portfolio.

Stocks, and investments containing stocks, often perform well before a correction. If their price has risen greatly, they may account for a greater percentage of the total value of your portfolio – so much so, in fact, that you might become “overweighted” in stocks, relative to your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. That’s why it’s important for you to proactively rebalance your portfolio – or, during a correction, the market may do it for you. To cite one aspect of rebalancing, if your portfolio ever does become too “stock-heavy,” you may need to add some bonds or other fixed-rate vehicles. Not only can these investments help keep your portfolio in balance, but they also may hold up better during a correction.

• If you’re retired … After you retire, you may need to take money from your investment accounts – that is, sell some investments – to help pay for your cost of living. Ideally, however, you don’t want to sell stocks, or stock-based vehicles, during a correction – because when you do, you may be “selling low.” (Remember the most common rule of investing: Buy low and sell high.

It’s not always easy to follow, but it’s still pretty good advice.)

So, to avoid being forced into selling, you need to be prepared. During your retirement years, try to keep at least a year’s worth of cash instruments on hand as well as short-term fixed income investments. By having this money to draw on, you may be able to leave your stocks alone and give them a chance to recover, post-correction.

And it’s important to maintain a reasonable percentage of stocks, and stock-based vehicles, in your portfolio, even during retirement – because these investments may provide the growth necessary to help keep you ahead of inflation.

Consequently, as a retiree, you should have a balance of stocks and stock-based vehicles, along with fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds, certificates of deposit, government securities and so on.

Being prepared can help you get through a correction – no matter where you are on life’s journey.

TIME TO PIG OUT! Pigs have been domesticated since around 7000 BC, though some experts maintain it’s really around 4900 BC. Either way this domestication occurred in China, a country which happens to still be one of the largest pork producers, if not the largest. Now, while pigs as domesticated animals have been around for a few thousand years, their ancestors have roamed the earth for millions. Pigs could be found roaming the wilds in both Europe and Asia around 5th century BC. But it was the Romans who, as with so many other things, perfected breeding of pigs and spread the production of pork throughout their empire. Which as we all know, stretched far and wide. It was apparently Hernando De Soto who initiated the pig’s population explosion in the United States when he brought with him the first 13 pigs in 1539. As these animals breed at an exponential rate, the original 13 multiplied and multiplied spreading rather quickly throughout the established colonies. The American pig production had begun.

People of the Muslim and Jewish faiths do not consume pork at all, as they believe the meat to be unclean because pigs eat waste. It was also noted some thousands of years ago, improperly cooked porcine products can result in trichinosis and the meat was prone to rapid spoilage.

Despite all of this there are still many people who love pork. It has a high protein content which is an important component of a healthy diet. Pork plays a major role in keeping our organs healthy, as well as being responsible for building muscle. In addition to providing us with protein, pork contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12 and Niacin, each a key component of a well-rounded diet.

Pigs are hardy animals and eat just about anything. They are, in fact, incredibly intelligent as well. Pigs have very few sweat glands, though none of which are functional to help adjust temperature. The term “sweating like a pig” is really funny, almost a moot expression, in light of this fact. And since they aren’t able to sweat, they wallow in mud in order to cool off, though they prefer to cool down in water.

To get to the meat of the matter, pork is a tasty food. March 1 of every year is observed as (among a few other things) National Pig Day. It was invented by two sisters in 1972 and the purpose was to (according to one of its inventors) “accord the pig with its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man’s most intellectual and domesticated animals.” This being the case, it does make me wonder how we aptly celebrate the day.

Do we eat more pork or less of it? I think it's a matter of opinion and personal choice. Either way, I have heard of, come across, and read about, so many weird and wonderful dishes made using any and every part of the pig. My grandfather used to eat pigs trotters and swore it was insanely tasty. No matter how much he praised the tastiness of this food, I just couldn’t find myself in agreement with his opinion. I just couldn’t get past the thought I would be chewing on an animal’s foot. I’ve heard of sautéed pig heart and pig uterus sausage too. I’ve come across sausage made using the pig’s rectum as well. Definitely very different.

More commonly known pork is bacon. This product can be made in so many different ways, including but not limited to ice cream, sandwiches, doughnuts, candies, frosting, accompanying eggs, brownies, cupcakes, taco shells and so on. These barely scratch the culinary surface of the sheer amount of things that can be made using bacon. My absolute favorite way to eat it is by putting it between two slices

of buttered bread. Simple yet effective at sating even the strongest hunger pangs.

Another pork product which doesn’t receive quite the recognition it is deserving of is ham.

People eat this as a staple over the New Year and Easter weekends. At Christmas, my family almost always prepares gammon and in the days following, the left overs are inevitably thrown into a delicious scramble for breakfast. Which brings me to another quirky day observed in March. The second of March to be exact, is Dr. Seuss Day, which happens to be Dr. Seuss’ birthday! It is actually a day celebrating the love of reading and encouraging children nationwide to come together and celebrate reading. While the day itself doesn’t really have much to do with food, I think it’s safe to assume most of us are well acquainted with the book “Green Eggs and Ham.” Since these two unusual celebratory days of sorts fall so close together, why not incorporate one into the other and celebrate both in due style. By making your own version of ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ you can observe both Dr. Seuss Day and National Pig Day. Imagine the kitchen as your very own book wherein you will write across the pages, your own rendition of green eggs and ham. Get your children involved in this culinary tale, use any ingredients you like.

I think my green eggs and ham would include some chopped garlic, sliced green peppers, thick chunks of deli ham, all fried until the edges of the ham are slightly browned. Into this I will whisk some eggs, cheddar cheese, a little paprika, some finely chopped green onions (what with spring coming and these being more readily available) and some pepper to taste. Who knows, I might even throw in some jalapenos for a little heat. My book’s pages are empty, primed and ready for me to create my own version of ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ as yours can be too!

I hope you do try your own “Green Eggs and Ham” recipe and if you do, share it with me! I have included a basic ham and eggs recipe for you to expand on and get creative with. Ham and Eggs 10 to 12 eggs 3 Tablespoons butter 1 to 1 and a half cups shredded cheddar cheese ½ cup chopped onion ½ cup chopped green bell pepper 1-½ cups chopped ham 3 Tablespoons water (or milk) Salt and pepper to taste Melt butter over medium heat in a nonstick skillet. Add onions and pepper and sautée until just tender, approximately 4 minutes. Add ham and cook for another 3 minutes. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs and water (milk) together well, and add to the skillet with the vegetables and ham. Cook by gently stirring and lifting the uncooked portions of egg periodically. Once the eggs are almost done, add the cheese, salt and pepper, cover and allow to stand for two to three minutes until completely done and cheese is melted. Two Whidbey Island parks may see new amenities and development in the coming years.

Joseph Whidbey State Park is being considered for projects that could include up to 50 rentable cabins, a central lodge, new day-use facilities and dry boat storage. The north Whidbey park is part of an initial list of 11 potential development projects statewide that are open for public input.

The original feedback deadline was Jan. 31 but it has been extended through May 11, according to Virginia Painter, communications director for Washington State Parks.

The parks commission is expected to review and potentially approve the list at their regular May 19 meeting. Comments can be offered online at http:// parks.state.wa.us/900/realestate-policy-update.

For 32 years now, there’s been a murder in the quiet seaside village of Langley on Whidbey Island.

Loretta Martin has been writing the mystery for the past 17 years.

Not a real murder, of course, but one for Langley’s Murder Mystery Weekend, coming up this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27 – 28.

“This year the story centers around the Langley bunnies and it also ties in with the Whidbey Island Shakespeare Festival,” said Langley Visitor Information Center representative Betty Freeman.

“I mostly try to do something current to Langley,” Martin said. “I started writing this year’s based on the Shakespeare Festival then changed it to make the main plot line the bunnies. I usually have at least two plot lines going.”

Martin said she began writing the mysteries for budget reasons when she was the director of the Langley Chamber of Commerce.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION NATIONAL POLITICS President Barack Obama has included $4.6 million in his 2017 fiscal year budget to support a new fisheries research station in Mukilteo, according to a news release from Congressman Rick Larsen. The new facility will be part of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, whose current Mukilteo research station is several decades old and needs major upgrades to continue to produce research. The research station will be part a redevelopment of Mukilteo’s entire waterfront, including beach access, trails, mixed use development and a multimodal transportation center, according to Larsen. Public hearings on this redevelopment will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Clinton Community Hall, and at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the Rosehill Community Center in Mukilteo.

New CO installed at NAS Whidbey Island

There is a new man at the helm of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

Capt. Geoffrey Moore took command of the Pacific Northwest’s only Naval Air Station in a Change of Command ceremony Friday, Feb. 19, replacing Capt. Michael Nortier.

In what was a traditional military ceremony, Nortier spoke first, calling out members of Team Whidbey – both military and civilian- for their contributions.

“This is just a small sample of the talent pool at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island,” he told the audience and his successor. “I am absolutely confident you are taking over a great team.”

Nortier thanked the community for its support as well.

“It is the effort of each and every one of you that makes Team Whidbey great,” he said. “And the community has certainly made a difference and has also enabled the success of Team Whidbey.”

Guest speaker for the event was Rear Adm. Jeffrey Ruth, Commander, Navy Region

Northwest, whom Nortier called “the right leader at the right time.”

“This is one of the most complex and vital Navy facilities,” said Ruth. “Its contribution to our national security is significant.”

Ruth praised the successes NAS Whidbey has achieved during Nortier’s time in command, most notably receiving the Navy’s 2016 Installation Excellence Award. As the ceremony also served as Capt.

“Your focus, enthusiasm, passion, devotion, keen insight and honesty will be missed,” said Ruth. “Thank you for doing a superior job.”

He also praised NAS Whidbey’s new leader.

“It is Whidbey Island’s good

fortune the Navy has sent one of its highest quality here,” he said of Capt. Moore. “I am confident in your ability to carry out this mission.”

Moore, the 39th commanding officer of NAS Whidbey Island, takes over at an important time, as the final phase of preparations are underway for the transition from the P-3C Orion aircraft to the P-8A Poseiden.

“I stand before you truly humbled at the opportunity to work with each and every one of you, to continue the success of our base and our community by continuing the success of the relationships that Skipper Nortier and previous commanding officers have built and sustained,” Moore said.

Moore comes from Middletown, Conn. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992 and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1994. He said he is looking forward to the challenges ahead of him.

“We will continue the vision of one team, operating as one family, focused on one single and immensely important mission – to be ready to answer the call of our civilian leadership to fight and win our nation’s wars.”

A bill that establishes an Office of Privacy and Data Protect has passed the state House of Representatives and is scheduled for a public hearing in the Senate Feb. 25. Sponsored by Rep. Norma Smith, said office would work with state agencies to establish best practices to safeguard private information of Washingtonians and serve as a resource for concerned consumers. The office would be tasked with: seeking ways to limit data collection, tracking the sale of private information to third parties, and monitoring citizen complaints regarding the collection and use of personal information. It would also be required to conduct an annual privacy review, hold annual privacy training, and educate consumers through public outreach across Washington state.

Rep. Dave Hayes will hold a 10th District telephone town hall 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1. Originally scheduled for Feb. 18, Hayes rescheduled the event due to a scheduling conflict.

During the telephone town hall, Hayes will provide an update of the 2016 session and take questions from callers. The format is much like a radio call-in talk show, Hayes said on his website. Listeners can call in to listen and at anytime through-

The possible developments, known as Recreational Business Activity sites, would be privately financed recreation developments intended to provide amenities for park visitors while also generating revenue for the state park system, according to the proposal.

State parks said they are willing to consider other proposals that enhance the park based on public comment and that proposed developments must not impact existing park amenities.

In other news, the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District is looking for input on a potential new campground.

I give them a little biography and by the day of the costume shoot it’s so much fun to see what they’ve done with what I’ve given them. They come up with ideas on things they can do to ad lib.”

The whole point of the event, which is the longestrunning mystery weekend in the United States, is to have fun and get to know Langley.

“It is just really a fun time,” Martin said. “It’s unusual, it’s silly. You get to walk around a beautiful town, and have fun interacting with the actors. It’s good clean fun for a day or a weekend.”

“It’s a blast. It’s really fun,” agreed Freeman.

This hare-raising tale starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and runs until 5 p.m. and goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

ISLAND COUNTY Freeland County Park will be open for an extended shellfish harvesting season this spring March 1 – May 15.

Last spring, shellfish harvesting was allowed at Freeland County Park for the first time in several years. Beach Watcher volunteers – now working as Sound Waters Stewards – observed at low tide to count how many people were harvesting shellfish there. When reports were tallied and an inventory was conducted later in 2015, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife decided to extend the season. Army to Hold Communications Evaluation Training at NAS Whidbey Island The US Army’s 51st Expeditionary Signal Battalion ( 51st ESB) from Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) will conduct a Field Training Evaluation at NAS Whidbey Island’s Outlying Landing Field (OLF), Coupeville, Wash., from March 28-April 1, 2016.

The purpose of this training event is to ensure the battalion’s Troposcatter (TROPO) communication system team remains ready to rapidly assist civilian authorities in support of potential natural disasters worldwide.

Sailors from NAS Whidbey Island’s Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10’s Mobile Tactical Operations Center 12 (MTOC) will jointly train with the 51st ESB team as Wing 10 MTOC personnel use similar mobile systems while deployed overseas.

The Army’s 51st ESB can provide secure and non-secure voice, data, and video communications in support of significant or catastrophic events to enable communication between first responders, government agencies, Army units, combatant commanders, joint, intergovernmental, interagency, and multinational forces command and control.

TROPO systems broadcast communication signals that bounce off the troposphere layer of the atmosphere instead of using a satellite, allowing the signal to travel over terrestrial obstructions such as mountains.

TROPO communications offer greater distance, reliability, and bandwidth than the more common line-of-sight communications systems.

Training at NAS Whidbey Island’s OLF will provide a challenging and realistic environment that will enable members of the 51st ESB the opportunity to enhance the readiness of TROPO soldiers, equipment, movement and signal readiness. As a result, TROPO communication teams will be better prepared to accomplish their mission and assist civilian authorities in the event of a significant or catastrophic event.

Air Station Squadron donates toys to help local children The Sailors of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron One (VQ-1) showed commitment to the community last week by collecting and donating over 400 toys, art supplies and stuffed animals to the children of Marjie’s House in Oak Harbor, Wash., during their toy drive which ended on Feb. 16, 2016.

The VAQ-1Sailors based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, paired with Island County Service Center’s Opportunity Council, started this drive to provide toys and games to the families supported by Marjie’s House. Aviation Electrician’s Mate 1st Class Rob Stuart coordinated with Melissa Brown, a coordinator with the Island County Opportunity Council, to plan the first children-centric drive in Marjie’s House’s 10-year history. The drive started Feb.8 and over the course of a week, the VQ-1 First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) raised funds and collected donations which were delivered to Marjie’s House on Feb.16.

Marjie’s House provides homeless and short term care for women and children who are victims of abusive homes.

They have eight low cost apartments on site for families to stay for up to 24 months and six emergency shelter apartments which are 90-day safe havens for families. The facility provides the current residents with financial education and

life skills. Over the decade there have been close to 400 families that have received assistance.

“These toys are therapeutic for the children,” said Brown.

“It helps them cope with their stress.”

Overall, the VQ-1 FCPOA donated a total of 437 items to the children at Marjie’s House. The donated items included books, baby toys, stuffed animals, puzzles, games, coloring books, art supplies, dolls, trucks and costumes. More importantly, they delivered a welcomed distraction and smiles to the children in need.

These toys and books will replace the worn toys and supplies currently in both the emergency shelters and the transitional apartments. The children will be able to keep the toys they have grown attached to when they depart, helping with their transition to normalcy.

Brown said that the families and children that enter Marjie’s House often arrive with nothing. The power of a teddy bear to comfort a child at night or a coloring book to whisk a child into some joyful imaginative land cannot be overlooked in these situations.

Through this drive, VQ-1’s FCPOA have provided these children comfort, joy and hope—hope for a better future.

With the limited number of activities happening right now, reports can get extremely scarce to share with you. The Sportsman Show seems to be the last big event for me to share before waiting a couple months for anything really exciting to begin. If you have anything you would like to me to write about please send me a note. It’s my intent to keep you informed and share experiences so you further enjoy what the great outdoors has to offer.

I really wanted to go to the Anacortes Puget Sound Anglers meeting this month to get some information on the derby to share but I was hit with this crud that’s going around. I didn’t care to share it with others so I missed the meeting. Now I am on the mend and I hope to make the March meeting. With regard to clubs, there is also the Whidbey Island Fishing Club who meets the first Thursday of each month in Freeland. If you get the chance, they are a great group of people and you should check them out for good local information and sharing fishing stories.

Recently, I received a notice from the WDFW explaining they had plans to stock a few Skagit County lakes with some pretty big trout. These trout are in the 3-pound range and can make for a little excitement in these usually slow months. You can practice catch and release if you aren’t into eating trout and just want to enjoy some time fishing. While they didn’t stock any Island County lakes, it’s a short drive to Campbell Lake which received a total of 880 of these trout February 11 and 12. My last trip off island, driving

by Campbell Lake, I did see a few folks fishing from the bank but I was surprised to not see any boats. The weather was decent and it being a well-protected lake, the water was very calm. With this in mind, it’s a chance to put your boat in the water and exercise it a bit before making those longer trips out in the salt water. Campbell is also large enough to launch larger boats unlike some of the other lakes around here.

Some additional fishing news was the closure of marine area 6 February 22. It seems they have reached their quota for the winter early.

I don’t see them doing the same with area 7 this year but all it would take is a few great weekends of fishing weather to change this.

As for marine area 9, monitor the WDFW web site. With the area being as popular as it is, the quota will not take long to be caught there as well.

Recent reports show fishing in salt water has been decent. There are not as many reports as last year and the weather is probably the reason. A few good days are predicted this week so I hope to see some new reports come in. Let me know how you are fairing with fishing this winter.

For those of you who hunt and are interested in spring bear, February 29 is the deadline to put in for your tags. Here is some of the information from the WDFW website: “To apply for a permit, hunters must purchase a special permit application and a 2016 hunting license that includes bear as a species option. Hunting licenses, bear transport tags and bear permit applications may be purchased: Online at http://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ By phone at (866) 246-9453 or At any license vendor in the state.”

If you are one who waits out the winter, there are things you can do now which will make your next season more enjoyable. For hunters, to keep your shooting or archery skills on target, go to one of the many ranges for your sport to practice or join a local club.

Practicing in the off season gives you more confidence when in the field. With fishing, I like doing maintenance on my fishing gear and boat right now. This varies from one person to the next but each is important and it will ensure you have maximized your offseason time.

For my gear maintenance, I normally begin with my rods and reels. I like to clean up my fishing rods, inspecting them to make sure I haven’t broken an eye or had a wrap come loose. I will also replace old, worn out wraps and eyes if needed. A little lemon Joy and water can go a long way to making fishing rods look new again. My reels inspection and care is a bit more intensive. First I inspect the line to see if it needs to be replaced.

One thing I do to try and save a few dollars with the reels I have braid on, is to take the line off the reel with another spare reel. This way the used and faded line on the one reel becomes the first to go on the ‘new’ reel and I have a whole lot of unused line finishing it. I also like to take my reels apart and give them a nice cleaning and lubricate them. Be sure to give your drag system a good inspection as well. Taking this time now can help prevent an issue when you hook into a big fish.

Next, I like to clean and fix up my fishing gear. Break out your tackle boxes and check all your lures, hooks, flashers and anything else you regularly use. I find many lures need hooks or swivels replaced. Flashers need to be cleaned and lubed as well. Purge out old rusty terminal tackle and replace items you’re running low on. I suggest Ace Hardware for your replacement pieces. They usually have a pretty good stock of what we use in this area. Some of the sporting goods stores carry gear as well but I usually first check locally at Ace. I know many people who do their annual maintenance on their boats prior to storing them for the winter. For those of us who try to continue to use our boats, now is the time to do maintenance. I will change the lower unit oil and if you have a 4-stroke, you can change the power head oil as well. Note the condition of your impeller while you're at it.

Doing so now will keep you from doing it a day down the road when you wish you could be fishing.

I tend to put my boat's deep cleaning off as late as I can. Most of us store our boats outside but covered and the weather will ruin any cleaning that's been done so I wait.

One thing I will do now is inspect my down riggers. They take a lot of abuse during the summer and need a bit of love to ensure they can continue to operate properly. Take care of your gear and it will work well for you.
