Have you ever let your mind wander while you hike, imagining your trail could take you to distant lands? If you’ve visited some of north Whidbey Island’s State Parks, your dream is closer to reality than you think.

The 1,200 mile long Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail (PNT) connects Whidbey Island with Montana to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Starting at the Canadian/American border in Glacier National Park, Montana, the PNT winds its way, like a raindrop, from the mountainous west to the wild shores of the Pacific Ocean at Cape Alava in Olympic National Park. On its journey from the crown of the continent to the coast, the PNT connects National Parks, National Forests and a multitude of state and private lands for a tour of the best of the Pacific Northwest. Before it reaches Whidbey Island, the PNT travels through the heart of North Cascades National Park, around Mt. Baker in the Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest and through some of the most scenic areas in Whatcom and Skagit County. It then follows state and public parks before crossing the Deception Pass bridge into Deception Pass State Park. At that point, the PNT tours Joseph Whidbey State Park, Fort Ebey State Park, and Fort Casey State Park before departing the island for Port Townsend at the Coupeville ferry terminal. While on Whidbey Island, the Pacific Northwest Trail follows the west coast, connecting locations fit for hikers (and mountain bikers) of all ages and abilities. Get moving with these easy suggestions!

Deception Pass Deception Pass State Park is easily the bestknown State Park on Whidbey Island and a popular destination for visitors in Western Washington. Whether you hike along the North Beach trail to the west, or Goose Rock Perimeter Trail to the East, you’re bound to see gorgeous views of Skagit Bay and Puget Sound. Often, eagles and ravens can be seen hanging mid air on an air current, and seal and otter heads dot the waves. For a brilliant view of the Olympics, venture down towards West Point or up to the summit of Goose Rock.

There are two wonderful options to travel when exploring the PNT in Deception Pass. Either follow North Beach between West Point and the bridge, or hike the Goose Rock Perimeter Trail. Both trails provide excellent views of Skagit Bay and Puget Sound. An excellent time to visit is early morning or evening when the sun is starting to set. If you’re a photographer, be sure to head to the Cornet Bay Marine Area and the East Hoypus Trail for excellent sunset shots with both Deception Pass bridges. For a great day hike away from the crowds, park at the Cornet Bay Marine Area and hike along Cornet Bay Road, a gated road, to East Hoypus Point Trail.

Joseph Whidbey State Park A short 15-minute drive from Coupeville, Joseph Whidbey State Park is a favorite for

local hikers, runners, and dog walkers. As one of Whidbey’s lesser-visited parks, it’s easy to find a few hours of solitude in this 112-acre day-use park. For naturalists and birders, the beautiful wooded trails and open shoreline provide ample opportunities to bird wach or naturalize in relative peace.

The trails at Joseph Whidbey are perfect for new hikers looking for little to no change in elevation, and with .5 miles of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) hike trails, this is a great spot for the whole family.

Fort Ebey State Park

No visit to Whidbey Island is complete without time spent at Fort Ebey State Park. With gorgeous views of the sound, a clear day affords hikers sights of Mount Baker and the Cascades to the east, and the Olympics to the west. The beautiful green cliffs of the bluff stand out against the blue-gray ocean and muted browns of the driftwood-covered beach. The park is a popular spot for paragliders and surfers, and makes an excellent eagle watching location. If you’re lucky, you may see some of the famous sea life of the area, including seals, whales and sea birds.

Fort Ebey and the nearby Kettles’s Recreation area are hugely popular with mountain bikers, and with over 15 miles of trail and merely 150’ of elevation gain, it’s a great way to introduce new bikers to the joys of single-track. If you’re looking for a walking adventure bathed in sea breezes, follow the Bluff trail, a section of the PNT as it follows the coastline south towards Perego’s Lake. This hike can be difficult for those with mobility issues and may require scrambling over driftwood logs, and walking along steep cliffs.

Fort Casey State Park

Round out your Pacific Northwest Trail tour of Whidbey Island's State Parks with a trip to Fort Casey State Park, or Camp Casey. Hike along the beach and watch the Coupeville-Port Townsend ferry on its journey across the sound, or visit the Admiralty Head Lighthouse for a quick history lesson.

The area also hosts a protected underwater dive park near the ferry dock. Parking is located near the ferry, or at a few locations in the park.

Having run out of peanut butter, last night for dinner I had a jelly and jelly sandwich. Blackberry preserves on one slice of bread. Blackberry jelly on the other slice. I tried to tell the difference, but it was too late.

By the time I thought I had figured out which taste was the jelly and which taste was the preserves, the sandwich was gone.

A second jelly and jelly sandwich is a stretch, even for testing purposes. Of course, if I ever was able to decide which blackberry flavor is more preserved than jelled, what would I do with the information?

Droned out I just saw my first ever movie using drone camera footage. Cinema will never be the same again. Imagine fluid track shots in the sky. A bird's eye view of cowboys riding horses on the plains. If I ever get a smart phone, I may need a Dramamine app.

Clint Eastwood's son, Scott, is the lead actor in the film Diablo. On the DVD box it states the movie is rated R (restricted) for violence and brief language. Maybe extremely unneeded violence and brief acting would be a better warning.

If leading male actors were paid by the word, like the old barristers and solicitors of common law England, Scott Eastwood would be in line at the Good Cheer Food Bank. Remember how little Clint Eastwood's cowboy Joe said in his Fistful of Dollar type movies? Scott Eastwood's character, Jackson, the disgruntled, demonic husband in search of his kidnapped wife, has fewer words than his horse, Ace, has nays.

On the bright side of this dark movie, the scenery of Alberta, Canada, imitating the

Whidbey Weekly Colorado territory after the Civil War, is about as scenic as it gets. Most of the stunts men are from Calgary.

Many moons ago, after a train trip, we stopped in Calgary to spend an evening. Ever the optimistic tourist, I bought an annual elevator pass somewhere so I could get the family price going up to the top of the tallest building in Calgary. After swiveling 360 degrees a few times, I realized, no matter the exchange rate at the time, the Canadians had won.

Remember the annual elevator passes at the Space Needle? Seems like we could take up to five guests. I may be the reason they do not do that anymore. I was sub-selling guest passes in the parking lot. My sign said—Want to be my friend to save 3 bucks? I stood in the Joe Diamond parking lot where they chain up the 55-gallon drum saying "Naughty Naughty" on the side when you don't pay your fees. A great way to impress a first date when you come back from dinner atop the Needle.

If you like western movies with violence and great scenery, rent Diablo. If you do not like violence, but do like horses and scenery, watch the DVD with the sound muted, while you fast forward to the next drone camera scene of Jackson riding Ace. Don't forget the Dramamine, or you might end up on the back side of the horse.

Unsubscribe Being a curious sort, with an alleged ADHD background, oftentimes I will be interested in something which generates e-mails to and from a new source. The other day the collateral damage of one of my inquiries, long forgotten, generated excessive communications from an organization that markets web seminars.

Zip code learning While recently meditating on my own contemplations, I tried to recall all the states where I have lived. Not counting the state of confusion, I have lived in twelve states. Starting in Colorado, and on to Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, South Carolina, North Carolina, California, Oregon, Arizona, Utah, and Washington.

This may explain why I have so many accents.

When I lived in Utah, I spoke secondary Mormon. When in Missouri, secondary southern Baptist. In California, I spoke metaphysically with friends, but more Presbyterian with family.

While in the Carolinas, I spoke Marine, but when in Oregon, somewhat volcanic, with a touch of magma.

Many years later, after some diction classes and sound advice, I have been able to subdue my propensity to sound sarcastic with my consonants and vowels. Hopefully, I can carry this on so my granddaughter will be able to understand me better than I will be hearing her.

We have yet to meet formally. Our granddaughter is awaiting her birth in May. No name yet as each week she becomes a different sized vegetable.

Finally, I scrolled down far enough to locate a link to unsubscribe from the barrage of BS. That mouse selection led to another page where I was thanked, yet asked why I was leaving the team. Imagine being asked why one is leaving Wal-Mart without any sacks.

Car Alarm Last Saturday, on the windiest ferry ride I have experienced in over three decades, the sound of car alarms was more nuisance than chorale, but better than listening to the Ray Conniff Singers.

So, I answered why with my reason, in the spirit of the now 101 year old Professor Irwin Corey – My short attention span precludes

Why do people set car alarms on stationary vehicles which are sandwiched between stationary vehicles on a moving object?

The roar of the ferry engines, coupled with the car alarms and waves smashing against the port side of starboard, was a reminder to be grateful. Thankfully, my truck is too old for a truck alarm. So are my ears.

Spring Forward Now that we have moved our clocks ahead an hour, we are closer to being finished with whatever it was we forgot we were doing.

In other words, whom are you voting for this week?

Alex Castellanos, a Republican strategist, appeared last Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press. Along with other panelists, Mr. Castellanos prognosticated, capitulated, and regurgitated.

As my news junkiness is challenged for attention, I must say that what others are saying is beyond entertaining. If only Chet Huntley and David Brinkley were mic'ed up for their observations. John Chancellor, Douglas Edwards, H. V. Kaltenborn, John Charles Daly, Eric Sevareid, Frank McGee, Sander Vanocur, and a host of other classic reporters would be an added bonus.

In fact, bring back black and white television.

Maybe we would all turn the tube off and get back to Mariner baseball on the radio. In the meantime, let the games continue.

Slam On This Saturday at 7:30 pm, singer-songwriterOak Harbor High teacher Erik Christensen will join me and Petite Bryant-Hunt for another fun night at the Freeland Cafe, writing poetry and enjoying music. Our Whidbey Island Arts Council sponsored poetry slams have been entertaining appreciators of words and rhyme for 24 years.

No experience in writing poetry is needed. If you are in the zip-code, stop by for some free fun in Freeland. Who knows, you might even go home with something you never thought you needed.

Bits & Pieces Letters to the Editor Editor, A term seldom used in the current political arena is ‘authenticity.’ According to “Webster’s New World College Dictionary (4th edition),” that which is ‘authentic’ can be “believed or accepted; trustworthy; reliable.” When it comes to evaluating presidential candidates, determining which one is authentic can be a challenge for even the most discerning of voters.

In the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, determining who is the most authentic - Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders - is not just a matter of matching words with deeds, but following those words over time.

Both have invaluable experience and knowledge, but only one of them has been consistent in their stance on a variety of issues.

The voter has only to look at what Bernie said in his political biography, “Outsider in the White House,” written in 1997, and updated with a new preface in 2015, to know that he has not changed his stand on the issues. This may explain why informed voters feel he can be trusted and support him.

On the other hand, only about a third of likely voters when polled say they can trust Hillary. Could it be because her stance on key issues has flip-flopped - e.g., she was for universal healthcare before she was against it? The same was true for her stance on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, the Keystone XL Pipeline, the Iraq War, and marriage equality.

Between now and the 26th of March, the day of the Democratic presidential caucuses in Washington State, I urge voters to learn as much as possible about the presidential choices before them. Given the high stakes in this election cycle, choosing the most authentic, trustworthy candidate is crucial and will determine America’s fate well into the future.

- The rate at which alcohol affects you varies based on factors such as alcohol content, what you are drinking, body weight, food consumption, and how fast you drink. Don’t try to figure out whether you can drive after drinking...you can’t. Not safely anyway.

- If you see someone driving impaired, call 911 when it’s safe to do so, and give a description of the vehicle to law enforcement. With one third of all crash fatalities in the United States involving impaired drivers, it is your business.

Getting those drivers off the roads saves lives.

- If you know someone who is about to DUI or ride with someone who is impaired, help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

What does drinking and driving cost? It depends: Are you talking cash, or are you talking your life?

Driving under the influence can kill you, your loved ones, and other innocent road users. DUI kills more than 10,000 people each year in our country, and every single one of those deaths is preventable.

Don’t rely on luck to get you home. Commit to driving sober. St. Patrick’s Day and every day.

Disaster Planning for Livestock Owners & Caretakers

Don’t Press Your Luck by Drinking and Driving Widely celebrated across the country, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest holidays due to the number of impaired drivers on the road. The St. Patrick’s Day holiday period (6:00pm March 16 to 5:59am March 18) from 2010 to 2014 saw the loss of 266 lives due to DUI crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In Washington State, data shows that during that same period over half of traffic fatalities involved an impaired driver.

That’s why the Impaired Driving Impact Panel of Island County is calling on local residents to put safety first this St. Patrick’s Day by not getting behind the wheel under the influence and to be the non-drinking designated driver for your friends and family.

Don’t have a designated driver? You can use NHTSA’s SaferRide app to call a taxi or a friend. The app is available on Google Play for Android devices, and Apple’s iTunes store for iOS devices.

Important Things to Remember about DUI - It’s illegal, plain and simple. Play it safe and never drive after having even one drink.

Do you keep livestock on your property? Have you ever wondered what you would do to care for them if the “big” earthquake or other large natural disaster occurs? Join local emergency preparedness experts to learn about possible disaster scenarios on Whidbey Island and what you can do to protect and care for yourselves and your livestock animals. Topics include large scale risk assessment and disaster scenarios, personal and property preparedness, neighborhood cluster networks and livestock owner preparedness plans.

Langley Bunny Daze Langley has too many rabbits. This story caught the attention of several national and regional news networks, which has brought a lot of tourists to town asking, “where can I find the bunnies?”

The downtown merchants have embraced the predicament by offering a herd of bunny creations from t-shirts, posters, paintings and sculptures, to décor, bunny glasses and ears, stuffed and chocolate bunnies. So the answer to where to find the bunnies is, everywhere.

Langley Bunny Daze, sponsored by Langley Main Street, is a celebration of all the bunny fever. Come shop hop on March 21 - 26 to find the perfect bunny creations available all over town. Come hear Mayor Tim Callison’s proclamation on Saturday, March 26 at 11:00am at Boy and Dog Park with lots of fun and games to follow. Special bunny characters will be on hand with gifts and photo opportunities. Join the hare hunt and find lots of stuffed bunnies hidden outside around town for kids to keep. Island Transit Executive Director Interview Finalists On Monday, the Island Transit Board of Directors selected three finalists for the Executive Director Position. These finalists will be interviewed and will have a chance to meet the public (currently planned for March 29, 2016).

Robert LaFontaine has been the General Manager for Twin Transit, a Public Transportation Benefit Area in Lewis County, Washington, since 2011. Prior to that, he was with the City of Bullhead City, Arizona, for over four years, first serving as Administrative Analyst in the City Manager’s Office, then Transit Manager for the city’s transit department, Bullhead Area Transit System. Christopher Phillips has served the City of Mukilteo, Washington, since 2014 as Management Services Director. This position oversees the city’s daily operations and implements policy. Mr. Phillips transitioned from the US Navy after a 30-year career, his last position being the Executive Officer at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, Washington. He has a bachelor’s degree in Ocean Engineering from the US Naval Academy, a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Brandman University in California, and a master’s degree in National Security & Strategic Studies from the Air Command & Staff College.

Conservation Futures Program Citizens’ Advisory Board (CAB) The Island County Board of Commissioners is seeking citizen member representatives from each of the three County Commissioner Districts to serve on the Conservation Futures Program Citizens’ Advisory Board (CAB).

The Board of County Commissioners appoints Conservation Futures Program Citizens’ Advisory Board (CAB) member representatives for 3 year terms. The initial terms will be staggered so that one-third of the member’s appointments expires each year.

The CAB is composed of nine (9) voting members that represent conservation and community planning expertise and technical knowledge. Within the nine (9) voting members, there are two (2) members representing each commissioner district and three (3) members representing the county at large.

Applicants must reside within the area they are representing.

The CAB reviews and evaluates applications to acquire by purchase, gift, grant, bequest, devise, lease, or otherwise, except by eminent domain, the fee simple or any lesser property interest, development right, easement, covenant, or other contractual right necessary to protect, preserve, maintain, improve, restore, or limit the future use of, or otherwise conserve selected open space, wetlands, habitat areas, farm, agricultural, and timber lands for the public use and enjoyment and as one tool for salmon preservation purposes. This process usually occurs during April of each year.

Spotlight: This newly minted Best Picture Oscar winner was, hands down, the best film I saw in 2015. An excellent ensemble cast (Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams), expert direction (by Tom McCarthy) and a compelling story (about the "Boston Globe’s" Pulitzer-winning investigation into child abuse by Catholic priests) make for a powerful movie-going experience.  (R • 2 hrs. 8 min.)

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: I want this to be the movie that sees Tina Fey capitalize on the big-screen brilliance she showed–both in front of the camera and behind it–with 2004’s "Mean Girls," but it shall not be so.  (R • 1 hr. 51 min.)

The Witch: I love an arty, atmospheric horror movie and this one, about a Puritan family living at the edge of civilization in 1630s New England, is exactly that. GSSWI Seminar - “Emigration and Immigration” Saturday, March 26, 8:00am-4:40pm Useless Bay Country Club, Langley The Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island will host Gary Zimmerman at its Spring Seminar. His topic is: “Emigration and Immigration”.

Gary A Zimmerman has been the president of the Fiske Genealogical Foundation in Seattle since 1998. He presents a combination of historical background and technical strategies for doing family research. Dr. Zimmerman also serves as the historian for the Pioneer Association of the State of Washington.

The 2016 Seminar will include four separate genealogical sessions: Background: 300 years of New Arrivals to American Shores; British Isles and Canada; German Immigration; Scandinavian Arrivals: Starting Anew in a Strange Land.

Registration cost for the entire day is $50 and includes the four sessions, morning snack, and tea and coffee all day long in a beautiful and comfortable setting. On-site hot lunch is also available for $15. Pre-registration is strongly recommended and the deadline is March 15.

Learning is up magician's sleeve

By KATHY REED Staff writer Kids, full of energy and exuberance, can barely contain themselves as they pay close and careful attention to every move made by local magician and entertainer, JR Russell.

“Now what’s the secret?” Russell asks when he completes his demonstration. There’s a slight pause as the children search their minds for the answer.

“Physics!” Russell declares.

It’s all part of an after school enrichment program class at Hillcrest Elementary school. The point of it is to engage children in a fun activity and teach them life skills at the same time.

“There’s a whole skill set, life skills, that are falling off,” said Russell. “Kids don’t know how to relate to people. They don’t know how to be polite, they don’t know how to talk in public, they don’t know how to introduce themselves, they don’t know how to competently stand up and say anything. And it’s getting worse.”

While there are advantages to today’s technology, it has come at a price, believes Russel.

“They say we’re in an age of social media, but we don’t know how to be social,” Russell said.

“Everything that is a creative outlet is now an app. Whether it’s drawing, writing, singing, everything is an app. Kids don’t know how to tie their shoes?

There’s an app for that.

“The flip side of all that is that there’s so much cool stuff out there,” Russell continued.

The Oak Harbor School District’s after school enrichment program is one way to combat what Russell feels is missing.

Each school in the district is part of the program. Classes vary from school to school and according to student and teacher interests, said Kellie Tormey, communications officer for OHSD. “After school enrichment programs provide structured learning activities for children outside of their regular day and typically supplement some course topic that pertains to their grade and age level,” she said.

“Kids are exposed to a wider range of interests and also have a chance to engage in productive after school activities with their peers.”

In Russell’s case, he said he is teaching important life skills along with magic.

“There’s eight life skills that I’m teaching them that I’m disguising as magic,” he said.

“Confidence, humility, respect, creativity, preparation, enthusiasm, generosity and authenticity.

But they don’t know I’m teaching them that."

Each session focuses on a dif-

ferent skill, such as practice and preparation, for instance. The goal is to help kids gain confidence through performing the simple tricks they’ve learned after school. Getting them comfortable standing up and performing the tricks they learn helps build confidence and helps the kids learn to relate to people in a way that also builds some of the other social skills Russell feels they might be missing.

While unknown to many, Whidbey General Hospital has grown to operate nine locations island-wide.

But with each office running under a different name – South Whidbey Whidbey Healthcare, Island Women’s Healthcare and Whidbey Island Sleep Center for example the matter has confused more than one patient.

This is very reason why the hospital has been working for years toward uniting the offices and rebranding in a way that clarifies and gives a unified front for healthcare on the island.

The new brand, which will go live this spring, hopes to accomplish just that.

“There’s widespread misunderstanding about what we do,” said Keith Mack, the hospital’s marketing manager, at a presentation Monday to the board of directors.

“I start with three basic rules,” he said. “Rule number one – have fun; rule number two – respect; number 3 - it’s all a secret. Just because you know something now you're not sharing the secret. You can share with your mother or father and you can share the secret

Mack said the hospital has not stopped growing since they opened their doors in 1970 and the hospital has, in recent years, made “an assessment of where we are headed and who we are as an organization.”

By JANIS REID Editor A long-standing group on Whidbey Island seems to enjoy the luck of the Irish.

The Irish Wildlife Society has been organizing the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Oak Harbor for 43 years now, without interruption and with growing community support. They claim to be the longest continuing parade of its kind north of Seattle.

“The first parade was a green pickup truck,” said organizer Barb Jacobs. Last year, the parade had 40 entrants.

No one seems to recall the origin of the society’s unusual name but Jacobs said it likely emerged “after a bit of Irish coffee.”

“It probably has more to do with excess than conservation,” Jacobs said.

"Leprichans are kind of tricky characters," said Jacob's husband, Bob. The parade has enjoyed overwhelming support of the community through donations and volunteers over the years. Jacobs said the organization was envisioned to be more about maintaining a certain lifestyle than engaging with nature.

Among their more beloved traditions is placing a potato outside the doors of businesses downtown at dawn for good luck. Occassionally Leprichans will follow suit and paint a green shamrock nearby - though no one sees them do it.

High school-aged artists are encouraged to participate in the Congressional Art Competition. The U.S. House of Representatives holds the nationwide high school visual art competition to encourage and recognize artistic talent in each congressional district.

The winning entry will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. Students in grades 9-12 who live or attend school in the Second Congressional District are eligible to apply. Applicants must complete and submit the entry form by 4 p.m. Monday, April 18. Mike Nortier retired a month ago as the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor after serving more than 20 years.

He has a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Fla. and a master’s degree in Aviation Safety Systems from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Pensacola, Fla.

Also a former leader at NAS Whidbey, Christopher Phillips has served the City of Mukilteo since 2014 as management services director.

Phillips retired from the US Navy after a 30-year career, his last position being the Executive Officer of the base. He has a bachelor’s degree in Ocean Engineering from the US Naval Academy, a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Brandman University in California, and a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Air Command and Staff College.

Life Tributes DR. BOB GOETZ Bob died peacefully Friday morning, February 19 at a local retirement home.

Bob was born in York, PA, and attended Susquehanna University and temple Medical School. He married his wife, Doris, in 1952. After a few years in the Navy as a flight surgeon, they moved to Oak Harbor in 1959. He started his private practice as a general family physician at Whidbey Medical Clinic and served the community for over 35 years. He enjoyed camping and extensive boating with his family, including multiple trips to Canada and the Inside Passage to Alaska.

In retirement, Bob stayed very active; he taught U.S. Power Squadron boating courses in advanced navigation, helped skipper an oceangoing tug through the Panama Canal and in northern Alaska, picked apples for food banks, and enjoyed cutting firewood for himself, family and former patients.

Survivors include his son Paul Goetz (wife, Kathy) of Bremerton, daughters Cindy Goetz of Oak Harbor and Susan Terry (husband, Dave) of Spokane, and 5 grown grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Doris Goetz (2008) and granddaughters Jenica Goetz (1993) and Sara Goetz (2010).

Bob’s memorial service will be held March 19, 3pm at First United Methodist Church. Donations may be made to the USMC Toys for Tots – a program Bob was actively involved in for many years.

FRANCES A. WHITLEY Frances Alice Whitley died December 15, 2015 at the age of 74 at HomePlace Special Care Facility, Oak Harbor. She was born February 19, 1941 in Salem, OR to Frank and Alice White. She grew up in Salem and then moved with her family to Chimacum, WA.

Rose Ann Weible was born April 26, 1927 to Phillip Ehli and Katherine (Segmiller) Ehli, in Mohall, ND. Her mother passed away while Rose was an infant and she was adopted by her Uncle and Aunt, Joseph Ehli and Agnes (Dworshak) Ehli of Bismarck, ND. Rose grew up and attended schools in Bismarck.

She had the blessing of growing up with her adoptive siblings and then developed close relationships with her biological siblings in her adult years.

Frances completed her GED and began work for Boeing in 1967. Eventually, she became a part of the 767 program. She lived in Marysville and Everett for more than 30 years during her time with Boeing. For many years, she served as Union Rep for the local of the International Electrical Workers Union. Frances retired in 2004 and moved to Oak Harbor in 2005 to be with her sister.

In January of 1946, Rose met Herb Weible and they married in Washburn, ND while Herb was home on leave from the US Army. The couple lived in Bismarck for three years then moved to a farm near Turtle Lake. For the next ten years, Herb and Rose worked the farm and their family grew with the birth of four children. In 1960, Rose, Herb, and children, Tom, Sandie, Bob, and Dennis left North Dakota and moved to Oak Harbor, WA. While Herb fixed cars and drove concrete trucks, Rose ran the house making certain all was in order and delighting everyone with her crafts and her culinary creations.

Frances is survived by her children, John Whitley of Marysville and Donna Mason of Amarillo, TX; siblings Eleanor Christensen of Oak Harbor, Elizabeth Lammers of Pt. Hadlock, WA, Joseph White of Clearwater, FL and brother-in-law Gene Yantz of Port Townsend, WA. Also surviving is a grandson, Mathew Mason. She was preceded in death by her former husband, James Whitley, her parents Frank and Alice, a granddaughter Christen Mason and siblings, Dorothy Yantz, Evelyn Craney, Carol White and Frank Edward White.

After retirement, Herb and Rose enjoyed traveling the country and spending winters in Arizona.

In her final years, Rose was overcome by dementia, but we always believed she knew and felt the love we all had for her. She has a special and permanent place in our hearts.

Rose is survived and remembered by her

Frances was a gifted artist, loved the out-ofdoors, loved gardening, nursing animals back to health and caring for her animal menagerie, enjoyed visiting Utah, was an avid poker player, road motorcycles and dirt bikes and loved tracing her genealogy. She often appeared to be short with people, but she was a total marshmallow.

Cremation was held. Graveside committal services will be held Saturday, March 26, 2016, 1pm at the Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Townsend, where Frances will be laid to rest with her family members. Corndogs are apparently synonymous with basketball. A hotdog coated with cornmeal and deep fried to golden perfection is THE snack food served and eaten at basketball games around the US. National Corndog Day was inaugurated in 1992 and stands as an observance of the symbiotic relationship between basketball and corndogs. A relationship which has opened up and reached out its hand to include tater tots and beer now too.

The origins of corndogs are hotly disputed and its invention debated among people all over. Some maintain it was German-Texan sausage makers who, upon finding people not completely sold on their meaty fair, decided to dip the sausages in corn bread batter and deep fry them. Carl and Neil Fletcher had a difference of opinion on this and staked their claim on the birth of the corndog at the Texas State Fair between 1938 and 1942. It is also believed by some the Minnesota State Fair in 1941 was the birth place of the corndog and the ‘original makers’ were the vendors, Pronto Pup.

A comfort food, encased in some sort of pastry or starchy goodness, placed on a stick (for ease of consumption), deep fried and presented to the eater to indulge their taste buds in.

Regardless of how and where this food came to be, one thing is for certain, the serious deliciousness of the corndog. I don’t know if it’s the batter alone, when fried becomes something completely sublime itself, or if when combined with the salty flavor of the hot dog, takes it to a whole new level in the taste arena. My personal favorite is honey corn bread batter on a corndog.

This food actually has many variations, demonstrating its versatility and the sheer amount of creativity applied to making corndogs.

Peruse the frozen food aisle at the grocery store and you will see what I mean. Breakfast sausage, surrounded by pancake batter is one example of the corndog branching out and inspiring people to create kin for it.

Corndogs and their kin can be found in other countries around the world. In Argentina a similar eat called panchuker can be found and is primarily sold by street vendors. This is a hotdog with an almost waffle like pastry blanketing the dog. The premise is the same as their U.S. counterpart as an inexpensive, easy to eat, tasty snack. Panchuker variants are found in Uruguay and Buenos Aires and sometimes they are stuffed with cheese and served with dipping sauces alongside. Positively mouth-watering!

Australia has its own version commonly referred to as a dagwood dog or a pluto pup.

I know it will probably be argued these are very different than corndogs and some might argue they are even more delicious. I’ve never had the honor of trying one although I would certainly love to. I guess I am trying to find the corndog’s family around the world, or things which work under a similar guise as the American food. So a pluto pup or dagwood dog, is a hotdog dipped in

In South Korea I’m told a person can find French Fry Hotdog on a stick. This is definitely something unique, a true conglomerate of East and West. Hotdogs are covered with pieces of potato, wheat flour batter and dunked into oil to fry until they are ready to be eaten with very little semblance to elegance. Who cares about elegance when flavor takes its place anyway?

However, upon returning to the United States from our small little ‘corndog world tour,’ it has to be said this is one food a fair or game of any sort would not be the same without. They are intertwined and personally I think it’s a genius food to have available at places where the risk of spilling things on oneself runs pretty high.

There are so many ways in which one can make and eat a corndog of some sort. I always say a kitchen is a creative platform where magic can be made out of all sorts of edible things. But few foods lend themselves so wholly to be turned into such a multitude of delicious eats as the corndog.

One can make corndog muffins, corndog casserole, corndog pie, breakfast corndogs, mini corndogs, so on and so on. They can be stuffed with things like cheese, jalapenos, bacon, herbs and spices, onion, vegetables, you name it, it can be stuffed in there. They can be coated with anything. In fact, I’ve seen chocolate covered corndogs and while personally, it doesn’t sound very tasty to me, others might find it delectable. It’s the beauty of food, multifarious and malleable and the person making or eating the food can adapt it according to their own liking.

Corndogs are ubiquitous at American sporting events and their ability to satisfy the hungry hordes is nothing short of a feat in and of itself. Corndogs are, as a friend of mine put it, a “comfort food” of sorts and I

Since National Corndog Day is March 19, the NCAA March Madness will see to it corndogs are gormandized in copious amounts and what better way to observe this day than to eat one? How about trying a new spin on this game day fare. I’ve included a recipe for corn dog casserole, as something unique to take with to a game day party, or to prepare and serve just because. Corndog Casserole 1 ½ cups milk 1 ½-2 cups chopped celery 2 tablespoons butter 1 – 1 ½ cups chopped green onion 2 eggs beaten 1 ½ lbs hotdogs/turkey dogs/veggie dogs 2 teaspoons sage 2 (8.5 oz) packages cornbread mix, dry 2 cups shredded cheddar, divided Grease 3 quart casserole dish. In large pan sautee the celery and green onions in the butter for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside in large bowl. Cut hotdogs lengthwise into quarters, then again into thirds. Sautee the hotdogs for 5 minutes in the pan until lightly browned, add to onion celery mixture and reserve one cup of this. In medium bowl mix together the corn bread mix, milk, eggs, sage (pepper if you choose), and 1 ½ cups cheese. Add this mixture to the hotdog mixture, and combine well. Spread into casserole dish, top with reserved hotdog mixture and ½ cup of cheese, and bake uncovered for 30 minutes at 400 degrees. (U.S. Navy photo by Tony Popp) Over 70 Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets from Port Angeles High School watch Navy firefighters conduct training at NAS Whidbey Island's Mobile Aircraft Firefighter Training Device during a visit to the base March 4, 2016. In addition to visiting the Navy Firefighting School to learn how Sailors combat fire emergencies at sea, the cadets also stopped at Maritime Patrol Squadron One (VP-1) and had the opportunity to go on board a venerable P-3C Orion. The cadets, escorted by Naval Science Instructor retired Navy Capt. Jonathan Picker, the school principal and several other adults, ranged from freshmen to seniors.

Reese was visiting the facility as part of her monthly CPO365 Training Leadership training for E6’s in transition to E7’s. This training includes study of Naval Heritage. The simulator is modeled after the specific PBY aircraft that found the Japanese fleet before the Battle of Midway in WWII.

Outlying Field (OLF) in Coupeville, WA, schedule for March 14-18, 2016 Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) operations for aircraft stationed at NAS Whidbey Island are scheduled to occur at the Outlying Field (OLF) in Coupeville, Wash., March 14 through 18, 2016.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14, 15 and 16, FCLPs at OLF Coupeville are scheduled from late evening into the night.

On Thursday, March 17, FCLPs are scheduled from early afternoon into the night.

FCLPs are also scheduled Friday afternoon, March 18.

The FCLP tempo is driven by the Fleet Replacement Squadron student training curriculum and pre-deployment carrier EA-18G Growler squadron flight qualifications. It can also fluctuate due to weather, maintenance and operational requirements.

NAS Whidbey Island remains open continuously to support flight operations and training. Flight schedules for OLF Coupe-
